The safest order for a new iPhone 17 Pro is: prepare the old device and Apple Account, move your data with Quick Start or an iCloud download, activate cellular service, create a strong passcode, enroll Face ID, verify account-recovery details, turn on Find My, and review Stolen Device Protection before you erase the old phone. Then check current software and privacy settings, and add physical protection if you need it.

This guide follows Apple’s documented setup flow for iOS 26 and explains what each security control does, which transfer method fits your situation, and what to do if the phone is lost or stolen.

Prepare both phones and your Apple Account

Keep the old iPhone available until you have checked the new one. A transfer can finish while some apps continue downloading, so do not wipe, sell, or trade in the old phone immediately.

  • Charge both phones and have a compatible USB-C power adapter available. Keep both devices connected to power during a direct transfer.
  • On the old iPhone, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and place it close to the new iPhone. These are Apple’s stated Quick Start prerequisites.
  • Have the Apple Account credentials used for iCloud, the App Store, Find My, and other Apple services ready. Make sure you can receive verification codes through a trusted route.
  • If a carrier activation prompt appears, keep the carrier account or eSIM information nearby. The exact activation screens depend on the carrier.
  • If the iPhone belongs to a school or business, confirm how it is managed before starting. Quick Start may be unavailable when the new device is enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business.

Apple’s Quick Start instructions were published July 20, 2026. On-device wording can change, so follow the labels shown on your iPhone 17 Pro rather than relying on a remembered screen name.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 256GB, eSIM, Cosmic Orange- Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Choose how to transfer your data

Quick Start offers two practical choices: a direct device-to-device transfer or an iCloud download. Apple also lists restoring from a computer backup as another route, but the cited Quick Start article does not detail its timing or requirements. Choose based on whether the old phone is available and whether you want the new phone occupied until every byte has moved.

Route Best when What happens Important conditions
Direct Quick Start transfer You have the old iPhone and want the new phone to copy from it. Data moves directly between the two devices. Both phones remain occupied until the transfer finishes. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled on the old device; keep the phones near each other and connected to power. Time varies with network conditions and the amount of data.
Quick Start with iCloud download You prefer apps and data to download in the background. The new iPhone begins downloading apps and data from iCloud while setup continues. Download duration depends on your connection and the amount of content. Keep the new phone on reliable Wi-Fi and power while downloads complete.
Computer-backup restore You already maintain a current backup on a Mac or PC. Apple identifies this as an available restore route. The selected Apple guide does not establish comparative timing or detailed steps for this method; use the current instructions shown by the device and computer.

Use direct Quick Start

  1. Turn on the iPhone 17 Pro and place it beside the old iPhone.
  2. Confirm that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on the old phone. Keep both devices close together.
  3. Follow the onscreen Quick Start prompts and sign in with the Apple Account used on the old device when requested.
  4. When offered the choice, select a direct transfer if you want the new phone to copy from the old one rather than download from iCloud.
  5. Leave both phones near each other and connected to power until the transfer reports completion. Do not use the old phone for an unrelated task or move it out of range.

Apple does not promise a fixed duration. A large photo library, many apps, or slower local and network conditions can make the wait substantially longer than a small migration.

Use an iCloud download

  1. Start Quick Start with the old iPhone nearby and choose the iCloud download option when it appears.
  2. Complete the requested Apple Account and network steps on the new phone.
  3. Leave the iPhone 17 Pro connected to Wi-Fi and power so apps and data can continue downloading in the background.
  4. Wait for the most important content, such as contacts, photos, messages, and authentication apps, to appear before retiring the old device.

This option is useful when you want to begin using the phone while less frequently used apps arrive later. It is not a reason to erase the old phone early; verify your content first.

If Quick Start is unavailable

A new phone enrolled through Apple School Manager or Apple Business can prevent Quick Start. Follow the organization’s deployment instructions instead of trying to remove management yourself. A computer-backup restore is another Apple-listed route, but its detailed trade-offs are not established in the cited Quick Start documentation.

Finish network activation and Apple Account sign-in

During setup, connect to Wi-Fi or use cellular service, complete any carrier activation prompt, and sign in to the Apple Account used for Apple services. Apple’s iOS 26 Setup basics guide covers these stages.

Use the account that owns your existing iCloud data and purchases. Signing in with a different account can make the phone appear empty even when the transfer itself worked. If a carrier or organization supplies custom instructions, those instructions take precedence over the general consumer flow.

Create the passcode and enroll Face ID

Set the passcode when the setup assistant asks for it, or complete the process in the Face ID & Passcode settings. Choose a code you can remember but another person cannot easily guess. The selected Apple documentation does not specify a particular minimum length or strength option, so do not assume that a specific number of digits is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Complete Face ID enrollment with the phone held as directed on screen. Face ID protects routine unlocking and can authorize sensitive actions without exposing your passcode to someone watching you type it. Apple Support states: “For your security, Face ID and Touch ID data doesn’t leave your device and isn’t saved anywhere else.” The biometric template remains on the iPhone rather than being uploaded to iCloud.

Rank #2
Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 512GB, eSIM, Deep Blue- Unlocked (Renewed)

Keep the passcode private even after Face ID works. The passcode remains the fallback for situations such as a restart, a security lockout, or a deliberate request for it, and it is the credential that underpins several anti-theft controls.

Verify Apple Account recovery information

Before depending on the new phone as your only trusted device, check that your Apple Account recovery routes are current. Apple warns that losing access to the account or its recovery methods can prevent access to the account and can interfere with reactivating a device.

  • Confirm that trusted phone numbers and other verification methods belong to you and are reachable.
  • Make sure you know the Apple Account password and can complete a two-factor authentication challenge.
  • Review any recovery contact or recovery-key arrangement you have chosen, using the current labels on the iPhone or Apple’s account-management screens.
  • Store recovery information somewhere separate from the phone. A note kept only in the missing iPhone does not help during a loss.

Do this before removing the old phone from your account. A second trusted device or an accessible trusted number can be the difference between a quick sign-in and a lengthy account-recovery process.

Turn on Find My and understand Activation Lock

On the iPhone 17 Pro, open Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone and enable Find My iPhone. Apple says Find My lets you locate the device through the Find My app or through iCloud.com.

Enabling Find My automatically turns on Activation Lock. With Activation Lock active, your Apple Account password is required to turn off Find My, erase the iPhone, or reactivate it. That means a person who obtains the phone cannot simply wipe it and set it up as their own without your account credentials. Apple explains the relationship in its Activation Lock guide.

Check Find My before you erase the old phone and again after migration. If the new iPhone does not appear under your devices, stop and correct the account or Find My setup first. Do not remove the iPhone from Find My merely to make a sale or repair easier; removing it also removes the Activation Lock protection.

Review Stolen Device Protection

Stolen Device Protection is designed for the case in which someone steals the iPhone and knows its passcode. Apple describes it as adding biometric requirements and delays around sensitive operations that could otherwise let a thief change account or security settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The feature depends on several protections already being in place:

Rank #3
Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 512GB, eSIM, Cosmic Orange- Unlocked (Renewed Premium)
  • Two-factor authentication for the Apple Account
  • A device passcode
  • Face ID or Touch ID
  • Find My enabled
  • Location Services enabled

Review the Stolen Device Protection control in the current iOS 26 Settings interface and enable it before the phone is lost or stolen. Apple’s user guide describes the control at Use Stolen Device Protection on iPhone, while its explanatory article is available at About Stolen Device Protection for iPhone.

What the protection changes

For certain protected operations, the iPhone can require Face ID with no passcode fallback. Some especially sensitive actions require a biometric authentication, a one-hour security delay, and then another biometric authentication after the delay. The design is meant to give you time to mark the phone as lost and secure the account before a thief can complete a damaging change.

The extra checks can apply to actions involving account or security settings, so expect more friction when you legitimately change those settings. The feature is not a replacement for Find My, a passcode, or account recovery; it works by adding another barrier to the controls those systems protect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the location behavior

Setting When extra protection applies Trade-off
Away from Familiar Locations Additional requirements apply when the iPhone is away from places it recognizes as familiar, such as home or work. Less friction for routine changes in familiar places, with stronger resistance to changes made after a street theft or other unfamiliar-location loss.
Always Additional requirements apply even at familiar locations. Highest consistency against passcode-based attacks, but legitimate account and security changes can require biometric checks and a delay at home or work too.

Choose the option that matches your risk tolerance. If you travel frequently, work in many locations, or are worried about a person who knows your passcode, the Always choice provides the least location-based exception. If convenience at familiar places matters more, Away from Familiar Locations reduces interruptions while retaining stronger protection elsewhere.

Check the migration before wiping the old iPhone

Use the new phone for a deliberate verification pass. This is not a speed test; it is a way to find missing information while the old device is still available.

  • Open Photos and check recent pictures, older albums, and any shared libraries you rely on.
  • Check Contacts, Messages, Mail, Calendar, Notes, and Files for recent items and expected account synchronization.
  • Place a test call, send a message, and confirm that cellular service or the eSIM works as expected.
  • Open every authentication app you use for work, banking, or two-factor codes. Some require a separate transfer or re-enrollment.
  • Confirm that essential apps have finished installing and that you can sign in to the accounts you actually need.
  • Verify Find My shows the iPhone 17 Pro and that Face ID unlocks successfully while the passcode remains known to you.

Only after these checks should you sign out of the old iPhone, remove it from your trusted-device plan if appropriate, and erase it for resale, recycling, or return. Keep any required recovery information outside the device.

Review software updates and privacy permissions

After the transfer, open the iPhone’s current Software Update and Privacy & Security areas and review what is waiting. Apple can change menu names and the placement of controls, and the cited setup sources do not establish a fixed update checklist or detailed permission-by-permission recommendations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install an available iOS update when you are ready, then inspect which apps can access location, photos, contacts, microphones, cameras, Bluetooth, and local-network features. Grant access only when the app’s function requires it, and revisit permissions after installing unfamiliar software. Use the labels displayed by your iPhone 17 Pro rather than following an outdated screenshot.

Know what is in the box and what is optional

Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro technical specifications list iOS 26 and a one-metre USB-C charge cable in the box. The product information says a power adapter is not included, and it also indicates that the phone ships without a protective cover.

Item Status What to do
USB-C charge cable Included; one metre Use it with a compatible USB-C power adapter.
Power adapter Not included Buy a compatible USB-C adapter only if you do not already have one. This is a charging accessory, not a security control.
Protective case or cover Not supplied according to Apple’s product information Consider a case that explicitly fits the iPhone 17 Pro. A case protects against drops and scratches but does not replace a passcode, Face ID, Find My, or Stolen Device Protection.

What to do if the iPhone is lost or stolen

Use another Apple device or iCloud.com to open Find My and mark the iPhone as lost as soon as you can. Lost Mode locks the screen with the existing passcode and lets you display a custom contact message. Apple’s guidance on Find My and Activation Lock is covered in its Activation Lock support article.

  1. Mark the iPhone as lost in Find My and add a safe contact method to the message. Do not publish sensitive account information in the message.
  2. Contact your carrier if you need the cellular line suspended or replaced.
  3. Change the Apple Account password from a trusted device if you believe the account or passcode may have been exposed, and review account-recovery alerts.
  4. Do not remove the missing iPhone from Find My while you still want Activation Lock. Removing it can make the device easier for another person to reactivate.
  5. If the phone is recovered, unlock it yourself and review account, location, and Stolen Device Protection settings before returning to normal use.

Stolen Device Protection must already be enabled to provide its extra barriers; turning it on after the loss does not retroactively protect actions a thief has already completed.

Troubleshoot the common setup problems

The old phone does not offer Quick Start

Confirm that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on and that the phones are close together. If the new iPhone is organization-enrolled through Apple School Manager or Apple Business, Quick Start may be unavailable by design; ask the administrator for the approved deployment route.

The transfer appears stuck

Keep both phones near each other and connected to power. Transfer time changes with data volume and network conditions, so a large library can take considerably longer. Interrupting the process or separating the devices removes the conditions Apple specifies for a direct transfer.

Apps or photos are missing after setup

If you selected an iCloud download, some content may still be arriving in the background. Leave the phone on Wi-Fi and power, then check the account shown in Settings. If the account is not the one that owned the original data, sign-in rather than the transfer route is likely the issue.

Stolen Device Protection cannot be enabled

Check each prerequisite: Apple Account two-factor authentication, a passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, Find My, and Location Services. The feature cannot supply its extra barriers until those underlying protections are active.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

You cannot reactivate or turn off Find My

Activation Lock requires the Apple Account password to turn off Find My, erase the phone, or reactivate it. If you cannot supply that credential, use your account’s recovery process rather than attempting to bypass the lock. Losing access to recovery routes can delay access to both the account and device.

The finished security baseline

Your iPhone 17 Pro is ready for everyday use when the transfer is verified, cellular service works, a private passcode and Face ID are configured, Apple Account recovery information is reachable, Find My and Activation Lock are active, and Stolen Device Protection is enabled with the location behavior you can live with. Keep the old phone until those checks pass, and treat a case or power adapter as optional hardware rather than a substitute for the software protections.
