Install and open Xiaomi’s Mi Fitness app, sign in, allow the permissions it requests, and add your exact tracker model from the app—not from the phone’s Bluetooth menu alone. Keep the phone and band close, choose the device found by Mi Fitness (or scan the band’s QR code when offered), then confirm the matching code or check mark on the band and tap Pair on the phone. The precise screens vary by model, operating system, and app version, so always select the model you actually own.
What you need before pairing
A first-time setup is easiest when the band can stay awake and the phone is ready to grant Mi Fitness access.
- The exact Xiaomi model: Read the model name on the box, receipt, band packaging, or the device’s startup screen. “Smart Band 9” and “Smart Band 9 Active,” for example, have different Xiaomi support procedures.
- A compatible Android phone or iPhone: Update the phone enough to install the current Mi Fitness app. Menu names and permission prompts can differ between Android and iOS releases.
- Mi Fitness: Install it from your phone’s official app store and open it before attempting to pair.
- A Xiaomi Account: Xiaomi’s iPhone instructions for the Smart Band 9 Active tell users to sign in. Use the account you intend to keep using if you may later move the band to another phone.
- Power: Charge the band if it will not turn on or its screen goes dark during setup. Pairing cannot complete while the tracker is unavailable.
- Proximity: Keep the phone and band close together while Mi Fitness searches. Do not leave the band on another floor or inside a bag during discovery.
Do not start by selecting an unknown “Xiaomi” entry in the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Xiaomi’s documented first-time workflows begin in Mi Fitness, where the app associates the tracker with your account and completes the on-screen confirmation.

1. Install Mi Fitness and sign in
- Open your phone’s app store, install Mi Fitness, and launch it.
- Sign in to your Xiaomi Account or create one when the app offers that option. If you already use Xiaomi wearables, use the account that contains your existing data.
- Read each permission request and choose the option that allows Mi Fitness to discover, connect to, and communicate with nearby devices. The wording depends on whether you are using Android or iOS and on the phone’s software version.
Permission prompts can appear again after an operating-system update or if you previously selected “Don’t allow.” If the app cannot search for the band later, revisit the phone’s app-permission page and enable the access Mi Fitness requests.

2. Open the add-device screen
In Mi Fitness, open the device section and tap the control used to add a device. The label can be Add device, a plus icon, or a similar command depending on the app release. Choose the category or model-selection route if the app presents one.
3. Select the exact model or search nearby
Mi Fitness can offer several discovery methods:
- Nearby search: Let the app scan, then select your band from the results.
- Model selection: Browse the list and choose the exact model printed on your device or packaging.
- QR-code scan: If the band displays a pairing QR code and Mi Fitness offers a scanner, scan that code with the app.
Do not select a similar-looking model merely because it appears first. Xiaomi’s instructions are model-specific, and a Smart Band 9 procedure should not be assumed to describe every other tracker.
4. Verify the discovered band
When more than one device is nearby, compare the information shown in Mi Fitness with your band. Xiaomi’s Smart Band 9 iOS instructions tell users to match the last four digits of the Bluetooth address when choosing a result. Use that check when it is displayed; otherwise, move other nearby Xiaomi bands away and confirm the name or identifier shown on the band.
5. Confirm on both screens
- Wait for the band to display a check mark, pairing code, or confirmation prompt.
- Approve the connection on the band by tapping its confirmation control.
- On the phone, tap Pair (or the equivalent confirmation shown by Mi Fitness).
Pairing is not finished until both sides accept it. If you dismiss the band’s prompt, Mi Fitness may return to searching even though the tracker appeared moments earlier.
6. Allow the initial synchronization
Leave Mi Fitness open while it completes the first sync. The app may download device settings or firmware information and may ask for additional permissions. Keep the band close until the device page shows it as connected. You can then configure notifications, health measurements, watch faces, and other options that your model supports.

iPhone instructions and model-specific examples
Smart Band 9 on iOS
Xiaomi’s Smart Band 9 iOS procedure uses Mi Fitness. After signing in and granting access, you can let the app search nearby, choose Smart Band 9 from the model list, or scan the QR code shown by the band when that option is available. Check the last four Bluetooth-address digits if Mi Fitness lists several results. When the band shows the pairing confirmation, accept it on the band and tap Pair on the iPhone.
Smart Band 9 Active on iPhone
The Smart Band 9 Active instructions also begin in Mi Fitness. They specifically tell the user to sign in to a Xiaomi Account, enable requested app permissions, and keep the iPhone and band close for discovery. The exact buttons can differ from the Smart Band 9 screens, so follow the prompts for Smart Band 9 Active rather than substituting another model.

Why iPhone Bluetooth settings still matter sometimes
Bluetooth settings are not the ordinary first-time setup route, but they become important when removing an old association. If an iPhone still remembers a band after a reset or transfer, Xiaomi instructs users in the Smart Band 9 scenario to open Bluetooth settings and choose Forget This Device before trying to bind the band again in Mi Fitness.
Android pairing: what stays the same and what can differ
On Android, use the same core sequence: install Mi Fitness, sign in, grant the requested permissions, open the add-device control, choose the exact model or nearby-search result, and confirm on both screens. Android versions use different names for nearby-device, Bluetooth, and background-operation permissions, so read the prompts rather than denying them automatically.
Mi Fitness may return to its device page after pairing, while another app version may show a setup wizard. Do not infer a failed pairing just because the layout differs from an iPhone guide. The decisive signs are that the correct model was selected, the band accepted the confirmation, and Mi Fitness lists the tracker as connected.

Which setup path applies to you?
| Situation | Use this approach | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| First-time setup on Android | Mi Fitness, Xiaomi Account, permissions, add device, model/search/QR, confirm on band and phone | Permission labels vary by Android version. |
| First-time setup on iPhone | Mi Fitness, Xiaomi Account where prompted, nearby search or exact model, then confirm on both screens | Smart Band 9 and Smart Band 9 Active have documented iOS-specific steps. |
| Moving to another phone with the same account | Disconnect or unbind from the old phone when required, then add the band in Mi Fitness on the new phone | Some models provide a dedicated “Connect new phone” command. |
| Moving to a different Xiaomi Account | Follow the model’s unbind or factory-reset instructions, then pair under the new account | Smart Band 9 Active guidance indicates that a different account can require a factory reset. |
| Band reset while an old iPhone still remembers it | Forget the band in the old iPhone’s Bluetooth settings, then search again from Mi Fitness on the new phone | This recovery detail is documented for the Smart Band 9. |
| Band cannot reconnect | Use Mi Fitness’ Connect action, check Bluetooth and battery-saver settings, restart, and reset only as a last resort | Smart Band 10 troubleshooting places factory reset later in the sequence. |
Moving a Xiaomi tracker to a new phone
Before changing phones, identify both the band model and whether you will keep the same Xiaomi Account. Xiaomi’s guidance does not use one universal transfer menu for every band.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Same Xiaomi Account
- On the old phone, open Mi Fitness and check whether the band is shown as connected.
- Turn off Bluetooth on the old phone and close Mi Fitness so it does not immediately reclaim the band.
- If the band’s device page offers an unbind or remove command, use it according to the model’s instructions.
- Install Mi Fitness on the new phone and sign in to the same Xiaomi Account.
- Open the add-device control, select the exact band model, and complete the confirmation on the band and new phone.
Some newer models expose a direct route on the band such as Settings > System > Connect new phone. Use that route when your model displays it; do not assume the menu exists on every Xiaomi tracker.
Different Xiaomi Account
A different account can require unbinding or a factory reset. Smart Band 9 Active transfer guidance distinguishes this case from moving the band while retaining the same account. Read the band’s model-specific instructions before resetting, because reset behavior and menu paths vary.
- Back up or synchronize any information that Mi Fitness still shows on the old phone.
- Use the model’s unbind command if available.
- If Xiaomi’s instructions require a factory reset for the account change, perform it from the band’s specified settings menu.
- On the new phone, sign in to the new Xiaomi Account, add the exact model in Mi Fitness, and confirm the pairing.
A reset can erase device state and personalized settings. It is not a universal first step for every phone migration.
When the old phone keeps reconnecting
After a Smart Band 9 reset, Xiaomi notes that an old iPhone can continue attempting to reconnect. On that iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth, locate the band, tap its information control, and choose Forget This Device. Turn Bluetooth off on the old phone, then return to Mi Fitness on the new phone and run discovery again. This Bluetooth-removal step is for clearing the stale association; the new pairing should still be initiated from Mi Fitness.

Troubleshooting a band that cannot be found
1. Reopen Mi Fitness and use Connect
If the band was previously paired, open Mi Fitness and use its Connect action when shown. A temporary app state can prevent an otherwise available tracker from appearing in the device list.
2. Check Bluetooth and the existing connection
Confirm that the phone’s Bluetooth is enabled. Look in Mi Fitness and the phone’s connection settings to see whether the band is already connected to another phone. If it is, turn off Bluetooth on that phone, close Mi Fitness there, and follow the model’s unbind instructions instead of repeatedly starting new searches.
3. Keep the devices close and awake
Place the phone beside the band, wake the band’s screen, and run discovery again. Remove other nearby Xiaomi bands or trackers temporarily so you can identify the correct result. For Smart Band 9, Xiaomi’s iOS instructions use the final four Bluetooth-address digits as an additional identity check.
4. Restart the band and the app
Restart the tracker using its model-specific power or restart command, force-close and reopen Mi Fitness, and try the add-device or Connect action again. A restart is less disruptive than a reset and is the next practical check after Bluetooth and proximity.
5. Check battery-saver restrictions
Xiaomi’s Smart Band 10 reconnection guidance warns that battery-saver features can interfere with reconnection. Temporarily disable battery saver on the phone and, if your band provides a battery-saving mode, check that setting too. On Android, ensure the system is not putting Mi Fitness into a restricted background state; on iPhone, allow the permissions Mi Fitness requests.

6. Clear a stale iPhone pairing
If the band was reset while still associated with an old iPhone, use that iPhone’s Bluetooth settings to forget the device, as described in Xiaomi’s Smart Band 9 recovery guidance. Then disable Bluetooth on the old phone and start a fresh search from Mi Fitness on the phone you want to use.
7. Factory-reset and re-pair only after simpler checks
Factory reset is a later troubleshooting step, not the default response to a missing device. Xiaomi’s Smart Band 10 guidance places reset and re-pairing after app, Bluetooth, restart, and battery-saver checks. If you reach this step, read the exact instructions for your model, perform the reset from the band’s specified menu, and then add the tracker again in Mi Fitness.
Common mistakes and the safer alternative
- Choosing the first search result: Match the model and, when available, the final four Bluetooth-address digits.
- Pairing only from Bluetooth settings: Start in Mi Fitness; use Bluetooth settings mainly to forget an old association during transfer or recovery.
- Resetting immediately: Try reconnecting, checking Bluetooth, restarting, and disabling battery saver first.
- Leaving the old phone active: Turn off its Bluetooth and close Mi Fitness so it cannot take the connection back.
- Denying permissions without checking their purpose: Revisit Mi Fitness permissions if discovery or background reconnection fails.
- Applying another model’s menu path: Xiaomi’s Smart Band 9, Smart Band 9 Active, and Smart Band 10 pages describe different situations. Select your exact model in Mi Fitness and follow the prompts on both screens.
After pairing: verify that setup really completed
Open the device page in Mi Fitness and confirm that the tracker is listed under the intended Xiaomi Account. The band should show a connected state or respond to a setting change made in the app. If the app immediately returns to an add-device screen, the confirmation may not have been accepted on the band, or an old phone may still own the Bluetooth connection.

Keep the phone and band close during any firmware or settings update initiated by Mi Fitness.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact Xiaomi support
Use Xiaomi’s model-specific support instructions when the exact model does not appear in Mi Fitness, the band cannot display a pairing confirmation, or a factory reset does not allow a new pairing. Include the model name, phone operating system, whether the band was previously linked to another phone, and which steps you already completed. That information distinguishes a permission problem from a stale association or an account-transfer requirement.
