Alexa routines automate a sequence of actions from one trigger. In the Alexa app, open More > Routines, tap +, choose an event, add one or more actions, review any conditions or device settings, and tap Save. You can build routines for voice phrases, schedules, alarms, sounds, presence, and compatible smart-home events; controlling physical devices requires compatible products connected to Alexa.

What an Alexa routine does

A routine is an if-this-then-that automation inside Alexa. An event starts it, and Alexa performs the actions you selected in order. A single routine can combine spoken responses with music, briefings, skills, calls, Fire TV commands, lights, thermostats, plugs, or other compatible smart-home controls.

You do not need to buy a smart-home device for a voice-only routine. For example, a spoken phrase can start a briefing or play music. Device-control routines require an Alexa-compatible product, its required account or hub, and a working connection to Alexa. The routine feature itself does not make a non-compatible bulb, camera, thermostat, or plug controllable.

Amazon states that one account can contain up to 200 routines. Amazon’s help page does not state a publication year for that limit. If you approach the ceiling, review old or duplicate routines and delete ones you no longer use.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Plan the automation before you build it

Write down the event, the desired result, and any device or profile dependency first. A simple plan prevents a routine from becoming a confusing chain that is difficult to test later.

  • Event: Decide whether the routine should start from a spoken phrase, a time, an alarm, a sound, presence, or a smart-home event.
  • Scope: Decide whether it belongs to the whole home or to one Alexa Profile.
  • Actions: List the commands in the order that matters. Put a safety or comfort action ahead of an entertainment action.
  • Dependencies: Note the exact Echo, device, manufacturer account, hub, Wi-Fi band, or Visual ID profile required.
  • Fallback: Consider what should happen if a device is offline or an optional action is unavailable. Test the core action separately.

Give each routine a distinctive name such as “Bedroom bedtime,” “Kitchen morning briefing,” or “Downstairs thermostat.” Clear names make the Routines list easier to manage and reduce the chance of editing the wrong automation.

Create your first routine in the Alexa app

  1. Open the Alexa app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Select More, then Routines.
  3. Select the + icon.
  4. Select Add an event. Follow the prompts to choose what starts the routine.
  5. Select Add an action and choose what Alexa should do. Add additional actions if needed.
  6. Review any extra settings shown for the selected event or action. These can include conditions, timing options, and which Alexa device should respond.
  7. Select Save.

Alexa can apply a routine to the whole home or to an individual Alexa Profile. Options vary according to your account, region, selected event, and connected devices, so the labels on your screen may differ slightly. If an option described in a guide is absent, it may not be supported by your device or account rather than indicating a setup error.

Choose the right trigger

Voice phrase

Choose a phrase that is short and unlikely to be spoken accidentally, such as “Alexa, start my workday.” Voice ID can also be used where Alexa offers voice recognition for the selected routine. Test the exact wording after saving; changing a phrase later requires editing the routine. Use different, recognizable phrases for routines that have similar actions so household members know which one they are starting.

Time and schedule

A time trigger can run once or on selected days, making it suitable for reminders, morning briefings, lights, or recurring thermostat changes. Check the selected time zone and repeat days, especially if household members use different profiles. Review the schedule after changing a device’s location or account settings, because a routine that depends on a particular profile or target Echo may expose different choices.

Sound detection

Supported sound events can include examples such as a dog barking or a person snoring. Availability depends on the Alexa device and feature support. Treat these as detection events rather than guaranteed identification: background noise, distance, and device placement can affect whether Alexa recognizes the sound. Use a small, non-critical action while testing a sound trigger before attaching it to heating, security, or another consequential device.

Presence and identity events

Presence Detection and Visual ID can start routines when supported hardware and profiles are available. These are optional advanced triggers; a standard Echo speaker does not automatically provide every presence feature. A presence event can be useful for welcoming someone, changing lights, or starting another routine, but verify which device is doing the detection and which profile is being recognized.

Alarms and smart-home events

An alarm can trigger follow-up actions, while a compatible smart-home device can serve as the event—for example, a sensor state or another supported device change. The available events are determined by the device integration and the Alexa app. A product may be visible in Alexa yet expose only some of its capabilities, so inspect the event list rather than assuming every feature is available.

Build useful action sequences

After selecting an event, use Add an action. Amazon lists actions such as:

  • Starting an Alexa skill.
  • Playing music or delivering a briefing or traffic report.
  • Making a call.
  • Controlling compatible Fire TV devices.
  • Turning compatible smart-home devices on or off.
  • Adjusting compatible dimmable lights.
  • Changing supported thermostat settings.
  • Arming a supported connected home-security system.

Actions can be combined in one routine. Put time-sensitive device commands before less important entertainment actions, and avoid adding several actions that compete for the same speaker or screen. A routine may offer a device selector or condition field; use it to specify which Echo responds and when an action is allowed to run. Some actions may show additional settings only after you choose a particular device, skill, or account.

For example, a “start workday” routine could provide a briefing, report traffic, start music, and adjust a compatible light. A “bedtime” routine could turn off compatible lights, set a thermostat action if offered, and arm a supported security system. Keep unrelated tasks in separate routines so one change does not affect an entire household sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alexa can arm a supported connected security system through a routine, but Amazon says a routine cannot disarm it. Keep disarming as an intentional, separately authenticated action. Do not treat a routine as a substitute for the security system’s own safety controls.

Connect a smart-home device for a routine

First verify that the product is Alexa-compatible. Amazon’s connection flow is:

  1. Open the Alexa app and select Devices.
  2. Select +, then Add Device.
  3. Choose the device type and brand.
  4. Follow the app’s pairing and account-linking prompts.
  5. Wait for the device to appear in the Alexa device list, then use it in a routine.

Amazon notes that most smart-home Wi-Fi devices work only on 2.4 GHz bands. If pairing fails, check the product’s network requirement, your router’s band settings, and whether the phone and device are using the setup network expected by the manufacturer. A device can be powered on and still fail to appear in Alexa until the manufacturer account link or pairing step is complete.

Connectable categories include bulbs, smart plugs, thermostats, and cameras. Buying one is optional unless your desired trigger or action depends on it. For an app-only or voice-only routine, budget for no additional smart-home hardware; for physical control, compare the product’s Alexa compatibility and the capability you need before purchasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Thermostat example

For the thermostat pattern documented by Amazon, open More > Routines > +, choose a trigger, select Add action > Smart Home > All Devices, choose the thermostat and the desired setting, then save. Your thermostat may expose different commands or temperature ranges. If the thermostat does not appear under All Devices, return to the device setup flow and verify its Alexa connection before rebuilding the routine.

Manage, edit, deactivate, or delete routines

Open More > Routines to see saved routines. Select a routine to change its event, actions, conditions, schedule, or target device, then save the changes. Use the available deactivate control when you want to keep the configuration without allowing it to run. Delete a routine when you no longer need it or when you are replacing it with a cleaner design.

Editing is preferable to deleting when you want to preserve a tested sequence. Before changing a working routine, note its current trigger and actions. After saving, run the trigger deliberately and verify each action, especially when the routine controls heating, lighting, cameras, or security equipment.

Automatically created routines

Amazon’s Frustration-Free Automation can create routines when compatible devices are set up. Alexa sends an app notification and labels these routines in Your Routines. You can view, edit, deactivate, or delete them from the routines list. Amazon also provides a route in Manage Your Content & Devices to turn off Frustration-Free Automation’s creation of routines. Review automatically created entries so they do not duplicate a routine you made yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Routines created by skills

Amazon’s developer guidance says that when a skill creates a routine for a customer, the skill cannot later edit or cancel that routine. The customer must manage it in the Alexa app. This rule concerns skill-created routines and should not be assumed to describe every routine type. If a skill appears to have created an unexpected entry, look in the app’s Routines list and manage it there.

Advanced presence features

Visual ID Personal Presence Routines

Visual ID presence routines require a compatible Echo Show and a Visual ID profile. Amazon lists Echo Show 8 (2nd Generation and newer), Echo Show 10, Echo Show 11 (2025 release), Echo Show 15, and Echo Show 21 as supported devices on the referenced help page. Model support can change, so check the current device requirements before buying hardware. The meaningful shopping questions are whether the exact model supports Visual ID, whether the profile can be enrolled, and whether it enables the presence event you want.

  1. Open More > Routines and select +.
  2. Select Add an Event > Presence Routine.
  3. Choose the Echo device.
  4. Choose the Visual ID profile to detect.
  5. Add the actions and select Save.

This feature is identity-based and requires the profile to be enrolled and recognized. It is not a general replacement for every motion or occupancy sensor. If the profile or supported Echo is missing from the selection screen, use a standard trigger instead of assuming the routine can be forced onto another device.

Echo Show camera presence detection

Home Monitoring on Echo Show can support routines triggered when the device camera detects a person nearby. Amazon says presence processing for this feature happens on the Echo Show and that it sends no video or images to the cloud for this detection. That privacy statement applies to the described presence-detection processing, not to every camera or Alexa feature. Check the Home Monitoring and device settings shown in your app before relying on camera presence for an important action.

Example routine designs

Voice-only morning briefing

Choose a spoken phrase as the event, then add a briefing, traffic report, music, or a skill action. This design needs no bulb, plug, thermostat, or other connected product. Start with one action, test the phrase, and add the remaining actions only after the basic trigger works.

Scheduled lighting

Choose a time and repeat days, then add the compatible dimmable light under the smart-home actions. Confirm that the bulb is visible in Devices, that the desired brightness control is offered, and that the routine targets the correct room or Echo. If you move the bulb or change its account link, edit the routine and reselect the device if necessary.

Thermostat comfort change

Use a schedule or another supported event, then follow Add action > Smart Home > All Devices to select the thermostat and available setting. Test the command manually before attaching it to a recurring schedule. Thermostat controls differ by integration, so use only the temperatures or modes the app presents.

Arrival or personal-presence automation

Use Presence Detection or Visual ID only when the required Echo Show, profile, and feature are available. Add a low-risk action first, such as a light or spoken response. Once detection is reliable in the intended location, add other compatible actions and review the privacy implications for everyone who may be detected.

Plan routines that are reliable

  • Use one clear purpose per routine: “Leave home,” “bedtime,” and “start work” are easier to test than an all-day automation with unrelated actions.
  • Name routines distinctly: Include the room, device, or schedule in the name so you can find the right entry later.
  • Start with a simple test: Use one trigger and one action, confirm it works, then add more actions.
  • Specify the target Echo: If the app offers a device selector, choose the speaker or display that should respond.
  • Check dependencies: A routine can fail when a device is offline, an account link expires, a skill is unavailable, or a required profile is missing.
  • Review safety-sensitive commands: Test locks, heating, cameras, and security actions deliberately. Remember that a routine can arm a supported security system but cannot disarm it.
  • Avoid duplicates: Check for automatically created Frustration-Free Automation routines before creating another routine for the same event.
  • Keep a change trail: When troubleshooting, change one event or action at a time so you can identify which setting fixed or caused the problem.

Troubleshoot a routine that does not run

The routine never starts

  • Open More > Routines and confirm the routine is active rather than deactivated.
  • Check the exact voice phrase, schedule, repeat days, or event selected.
  • For presence or sound triggers, confirm that the Echo model supports the feature and that required profiles or permissions exist.
  • Check that the account has not reached Amazon’s stated 200-routine ceiling.
  • Confirm that the routine belongs to the intended home or Alexa Profile.
  • For an alarm or smart-home event, verify that the triggering device or alarm still exists in Alexa and exposes the selected event.

The trigger works but an action fails

  • Confirm the target device appears under Devices and is online.
  • Recheck the product’s Alexa compatibility and any required manufacturer account link.
  • For Wi-Fi products, verify the 2.4 GHz requirement noted by Amazon.
  • Edit the routine and inspect any action-specific conditions or device selector.
  • Test the action by itself before restoring a longer sequence.
  • For a skill, call, briefing, or Fire TV action, confirm that the relevant account, device, or skill remains available.

A device or option is missing

Refresh the device list, repeat Devices > + > Add Device, and follow the brand’s pairing process. A missing trigger or action may simply be unsupported for that Alexa device, account, region, or integration; do not assume that every routine type is available everywhere. If a feature requires Visual ID, a specific Echo Show, a camera, or a profile, confirm those prerequisites before looking for a software setting.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What to check before choosing hardware

When a desired routine requires a new product, compare these three points:

Decision point What to verify
Alexa compatibility The product type and exact model can be added through Alexa’s Add Device flow.
Required capability It supports the trigger or action you actually need, such as temperature control, dimming, presence, or camera detection.
Infrastructure Any required Echo model, Visual ID profile, account link, hub, or 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi setup is available.

Prices, inventory, and compatibility change. Check the current product documentation and Alexa app options rather than relying only on a product category name. A cheaper device that lacks the required Alexa event or action will not satisfy the automation; a more capable device may still require a particular Echo model or profile.

Privacy and safety checks

Presence, Visual ID, and camera-based routines deserve extra review because they react to people rather than only to a spoken command or schedule. Confirm which Echo is detecting presence, whose Visual ID profile is enrolled, and what action follows recognition. For camera presence detection, keep Amazon’s processing description limited to that feature and review the device’s broader camera settings separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security routines also need deliberate testing. Amazon documents arming a supported connected security system, not disarming it. Keep an intentional authentication step for disarming, and avoid assigning a critical security response to an untested sound or presence trigger.

Key limits to remember

  • Amazon’s stated limit is up to 200 routines per account.
  • Routine menus and available actions vary by device, account, region, and integration.
  • Compatible hardware is necessary for physical-device control and for advanced presence triggers.
  • Visual ID presence routines require a supported Echo Show and Visual ID profile.
  • Routines can arm, but not disarm, a supported connected security system.
  • Most smart-home Wi-Fi devices referenced by Amazon use 2.4 GHz bands, so network compatibility matters during setup.
  • Skill-created routines must be managed by the customer in the Alexa app because the skill cannot later edit or cancel them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Amazon states that an account can have up to 200 routines. The help page does not provide a publication year for this limit.

Can an Alexa routine disarm my security system?

No. Amazon documents arming a supported connected security system as a routine action, but says routines cannot disarm it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where do I find my Alexa routines?

Open the Alexa app and select More, then Routines. From the list you can open a routine to edit it, deactivate it, or delete it.

Yes. After selecting Add an action, you can add multiple actions such as a briefing, music, a skill, Fire TV control, compatible lights, thermostat commands, or other smart-home controls.

Why is my smart-home device missing from a routine?

Confirm that the product is Alexa-compatible, appears under Devices, and has completed its manufacturer account-linking process. Repeat Devices > + > Add Device if necessary. The desired action may also be unsupported for that model, account, region, or integration.

Do Alexa routines work with 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

Amazon says most smart-home Wi-Fi devices work only on 2.4 GHz bands. Check the product’s own network requirements and router setup before pairing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Echo devices support Visual ID presence routines?

Amazon lists Echo Show 8 (2nd Generation and newer), Echo Show 10, Echo Show 11 (2025 release), Echo Show 15, and Echo Show 21. A Visual ID profile is also required, and support can change.

Can a routine detect a person with an Echo Show camera?

Amazon says Home Monitoring on Echo Show can support routines triggered when its camera detects a person nearby. The described presence processing occurs on the Echo Show and sends no video or images to the cloud for that detection.

Can Alexa create routines automatically?

Amazon’s Frustration-Free Automation can create routines when compatible devices are set up. Those entries are labeled in Your Routines and can be viewed, edited, deactivated, or deleted. You can also turn off the feature’s routine creation through Manage Your Content & Devices.

Can a skill change a routine it created?

No. Amazon’s developer guidance says a skill that creates a routine cannot later edit or cancel it. The customer manages that routine in the Alexa app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a sound or presence routine work inconsistently?

Sound and presence events depend on supported hardware, profiles, device placement, and the feature options shown in your account. Background noise, distance, an unrecognized profile, or an unsupported Echo model can prevent the event from starting.

The Bottom Line

Use More > Routines > + to define one trigger and a sequence of actions, then manage the result from the same Routines screen. Keep advanced presence features and device-control automations tied to explicitly supported Echo models, profiles, integrations, and network requirements.
