Set up the Rega Planar 6 RS Edition on a rigid, level support, remove the transport hub card, install the platter and mat, connect the supplied Neo MK2 power supply, and then follow the instructions for the cartridge actually fitted. Nd9 and Ania MC versions do not use the same phono-stage or tracking-force settings.
Before you begin: identify your exact package
The Planar 6 RS Edition has been sold with different factory-fitted cartridge packages. The standard option uses Rega’s Nd9 moving-magnet (MM) cartridge. Rega also announced two Ania moving-coil (MC) packages on 10 July 2026: a P6 RS with Ania MC factory fitted, and a P6 RS with Ania MC plus a Fono MC phono stage. Look at the cartridge and your paperwork before applying any tonearm settings.

Rega says the Nd9 is factory fitted and aligned and does not recommend further cartridge adjustment. If a factory cartridge is being replaced, Rega recommends having the cartridge fitted by an authorised dealer. The Planar 6 RS Edition was announced on 19 March 2026, so older listings or second-hand advertisements may describe a different package from the one currently in your box.

Choose and level the support
Use the surface as the adjustment point
The exact-model instruction is: “Place your turntable on a rigid level surface.” The Planar 6 RS manual does not describe adjustable leveling feet or a procedure for leveling the turntable body itself. Treat the shelf, rack or stand as the part that must be corrected.

Choose a support that is rigid, stable and large enough for the deck and its lid. Avoid a flexible shelf that bends when the turntable is placed on it, or a surface that can rock when you touch a corner. Keep enough room behind the turntable for the tonearm cables and the power DIN lead to leave without sharp bends. Do not place the Neo MK2 directly on a surface that can transmit vibration into the cartridge if a more separated position is available.
Check the shelf or stand
- Put the empty shelf or stand in its final position and make sure it is stable.
- Place a small spirit level on the support surface. This is an optional practical check, not a Rega-calibrated instrument or a required accessory.
- Check the level in both directions: front-to-back and left-to-right. If the bubble is off-center, correct the shelf, stand or its feet until the support is level and no longer rocks.
- Place the turntable on the corrected surface and check again. Recheck after installing the sub-platter, platter and mat because the added weight can expose movement in a weak support.
Check near the front and rear of the support rather than relying on one reading at the center. If a rack has adjustable spikes or feet, make small, even changes and retest after each change. Once the furniture is stable, avoid lifting one corner of the turntable to chase a bubble: the model-specific instructions do not provide a body-leveling adjustment.
A compact spirit level is useful for checking the supporting furniture, but do not interpret the tool as a measurement of sound quality. The practical goal is a firm, level platform that remains stable during operation.
Unpack the Planar 6 RS safely
Keep the deck flat
Keep the turntable flat while unpacking. Do not tilt it onto its side while removing the packaging or fitting the platter. Save the original packaging if the deck may ever need to be transported. The closed-lid dimensions are 447 × 117 × 360 mm, so measure doorways, shelf openings and the space above the lid before lifting the 5.4 kg deck into position.
Remove the transport hub card
Look beneath the sub-platter for the transport hub card. It protects the mechanism during shipping and must be removed before use. Slide the card toward the tonearm and take it out completely. Do not run the turntable with this card still installed. If the card seems trapped, stop and inspect its direction rather than pulling upward against the sub-platter.
Check the belts, platter and mat
- Confirm that both supplied Reference EBLT drive belts are seated correctly around the motor pulley and sub-platter.
- Carefully lower the dual-layer float-glass platter onto the hub. Keep it level as you seat it; do not force it down or twist it against the belts.
- Fit the supplied platter mat on top of the glass platter.
- Check that the platter turns freely by hand before connecting power.
Look around the full belt path for a belt that is riding high, folded or displaced. Both belts are part of the supplied drive system; do not discard one as spare packaging. The platter should sit flat on the hub, with no visible rocking. Never operate the deck without the mat when the mat is required for the record-height setup, and never place a record on the bare glass simply to test rotation.
The Planar 6 RS Edition is specified at 447 × 117 × 360 mm with the lid closed and weighs 5.4 kg. Those figures help you plan shelf space and lifting, but they are not leveling tolerances.

Connect the Neo MK2 power supply
Use only the supplied adaptor
Use only the Rega-supplied PS1 AC adaptor. The Planar 6 RS manual specifically warns against substituting another adaptor. The PS1 is not interchangeable with an arbitrary 24-volt supply simply because the voltage marking appears similar.
- Connect the supplied power DIN lead from the turntable to the DIN socket on the Neo MK2 PSU.
- Plug the PS1 adaptor into the Neo MK2 socket labelled 24 V AC.
- Connect the PS1 to mains power.
- Move the Neo MK2 PSU as far from the turntable as its connecting cable allows. Rega recommends this spacing to reduce the risk of cartridge hum pickup.
- Press the Neo MK2 front-panel power button to start the platter.
Make each connection firmly, but do not rotate or force a connector that is not aligned. Route the DIN lead and phono cables separately where practical, keeping them away from the cartridge and tonearm’s moving path. Switch off mains power before changing the DIN or adaptor connections.
Select 33⅓ or 45 rpm
Press the Neo MK2 33/45 button to change speed. The illuminated Rega logo indicates the selected speed: red is 33⅓ rpm and green is 45 rpm. Select the speed before lowering the stylus onto a record. If the colour does not match the intended record speed, press the button once and wait for the platter to settle before playing.
Connect the tonearm to your phono stage
- Connect the tonearm’s external phono leads to an appropriate phono input.
- Connect the red plug to the right channel.
- Connect the black plug to the left channel.
- Connect the phono stage to your amplifier or active speakers according to that equipment’s instructions.
Cartridge type determines the correct phono input. The Nd9 is an MM cartridge and requires an MM-compatible input. The Ania is an MC cartridge and requires an MC-compatible input or another suitable gain and loading arrangement. A turntable can power up and spin even when the phono-stage choice is wrong, so verify this before troubleshooting a silent or very quiet channel.

Set up the RB880 tonearm with an Nd9 cartridge
The following procedure is for the factory-fitted Nd9 version. Rega lists the Nd9 tracking pressure as 1.75 g and its nominal output voltage as 5–6 mV. Do not use these figures for an Ania MC cartridge.
Balance the arm
- Remove the stylus guard carefully. Keep the guard in a safe place so it can be refitted during future handling or transport.
- Set the tracking-force dial and the bias slider to zero.
- Fit the counterweight to the tonearm.
- Support the headshell and move the counterweight until the arm balances with the stylus floating approximately 1 mm above the record surface. Keep the stylus away from the platter and mat while balancing.
Use the arm lift or support your hand under the headshell while moving the counterweight. Work slowly: a small movement can change the floating position. If the arm will not balance, confirm that the tracking dial is at zero and that the counterweight is fully engaged on its thread rather than trying to force the cartridge downward.

Apply tracking force and bias
- With the arm balanced, set the tracking-force dial to 1.75 g.
- Move the bias slider to the same number as the tracking force, using the centre of the slider as the reference.
- Return the tonearm to its rest and refit the stylus guard if you are not immediately playing a record.
The Nd9 is factory aligned, so do not alter cartridge alignment, overhang or azimuth as part of normal setup. If the cartridge has been removed or replaced, use a Rega dealer or the instructions supplied for the replacement cartridge rather than assuming the factory alignment remains correct. The 5–6 mV nominal output explains why an MM input is appropriate; it is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s tracking-force procedure.
Set up the Ania MC version without borrowing Nd9 settings
Ania owners should use the separate Ania documentation for tracking force, bias, alignment and electrical loading. The Planar 6 RS manual’s 1.75 g figure is explicitly an Nd9 setting and is not established for Ania.
Before playing a record, confirm that the phono stage is configured for moving-coil operation. If your package includes the Fono MC, follow its connection and input instructions. If you use another phono stage, check its MC gain and loading requirements in that unit’s documentation. Do not select an MM input simply because the turntable itself is the same model.
Because the Ania-specific setup figures are not provided in the Planar 6 RS manual, stop at the cartridge maker’s documented values rather than estimating them. If the cartridge has been changed, damaged or supplied loose, dealer installation is the safest route. Never attempt to set MC loading by copying a value from an Nd9 listing.
First-play checklist
- The support is rigid, level and stable in both directions.
- The transport hub card has been removed by sliding it toward the tonearm.
- Both Reference EBLT drive belts are seated and the platter spins freely.
- The glass platter and mat are correctly installed.
- The DIN lead runs from the turntable to the Neo MK2 PSU.
- The supplied PS1 is connected to the PSU socket marked 24 V AC.
- The Neo MK2 PSU is positioned away from the turntable as far as its cable permits.
- The red and black phono plugs are connected to right and left inputs respectively.
- The phono input matches the fitted cartridge: MM for Nd9 or MC for Ania.
- For Nd9, tracking force is 1.75 g and bias is set to the same value.
- For Ania, the separate Ania instructions have been followed instead of the Nd9 values.
- The lid opens and closes without touching the wall, cables or tonearm.
- The stylus guard is removed only immediately before cueing the record.

The dimensions and weight are planning figures, not permission to place the deck on an undersized or flexible board. A shelf that technically holds 5.4 kg can still move or sag; stability matters more than a simple load rating.
When to involve a dealer
Dealer assistance is appropriate when replacing the factory-fitted cartridge, when the cartridge has been removed from its original alignment, or when you cannot establish the correct Ania settings from its documentation. Rega recommends dealer fitting for cartridge replacement and directs service questions to dealers or distributors. A dealer can also check a persistent hum, channel imbalance or mechanical problem without asking you to guess at cartridge alignment.
Ask for help rather than repeatedly lowering a stylus that mistracks. A damaged stylus, loose cartridge connection or incorrectly balanced arm can mark records, and none of those problems is solved by making the support less level.

Operating routine after setup
- Confirm the platter mat is in place and the stylus guard is removed only when you are ready to play.
- Press the Neo MK2 power button and select 33⅓ or 45 rpm using the logo colour as confirmation.
- Lower the tonearm with its lift mechanism; never drop the stylus onto the record.
- When playback ends, return the arm to its rest and refit the stylus guard before handling the turntable.
Keep the lid closed when the deck is not in use, but make sure it is fully open and supported while cueing if that is how your setup gives the arm clearance. Do not move the turntable with a record, loose stylus guard or unsecured tonearm in place.

Does the Planar 6 RS have leveling feet?

What if my Ania package includes a Fono MC?
Use the included Fono MC’s instructions and select MC operation. The cartridge still requires its own documented tracking-force, bias and alignment values.
Should I realign the factory Nd9?
No. Rega says the Nd9 is factory fitted and carefully aligned and does not recommend further adjustment. Use a dealer if the cartridge is replaced.
Bottom line
Level the support, not an assumed set of turntable feet; keep the deck flat while unpacking; remove the transport hub card; install both belts, the glass platter and mat; and use the supplied PS1 with the Neo MK2. Connect red to right and black to left, keep the PSU away from the deck, and match the phono input to the cartridge. For Nd9, use 1.75 g tracking force and matching bias. For Ania MC, use Ania’s own instructions and never borrow the Nd9 value.
