The safest first flight is a short, low-risk practice session: charge and activate the Neo, update it in DJI Fly, inspect the propellers and guards, check local flight rules, then fly in a bright, open area while keeping the aircraft in sight. Start with Palm Control only after the self-check and subject-recognition countdown; use DJI Fly app control when you need camera settings or virtual sticks. The Neo has no obstacle avoidance, so it will not detect or steer around a tree, wall, person, or wire for you.
What to know before you fly
DJI Neo is a lightweight camera drone weighing approximately 135 g, according to DJI product information from September 2024. DJI notes that weight can vary by production batch. Its low mass does not remove the need for a legal and safety check: registration, remote-identification, age limits, airspace restrictions, and operating rules depend on your country or region.
- Keep the aircraft within visual line of sight. DJI’s product guidance says, “To ensure flight safety, fly within a visual line of sight.”
- Choose an open, well-lit place with no people nearby, no overhead or lateral obstacles, and no water below the flight path.
- Do not fly at night for your first session.
- Assume the Neo will not protect itself: it does not support obstacle avoidance.
- Use DJI Fly’s Before You Fly information for DJI GEO Zone data, and check the current rules from your local aviation authority before leaving for the site.
These precautions apply even when Palm Control is doing the filming automatically. Automated framing is a camera function, not an airspace or collision-safety system.

Check the package and physical condition
Unpack the aircraft and compare the contents with the Quick Start Guide. DJI’s setup guidance shows the propellers and propeller guards fitted at delivery. If they have been removed, replaced, or loosened, confirm that each part is installed securely before powering on. Look for cracked blades, bent guards, dirt around the motors, or anything that can rub against a propeller. Do not fly with damaged or questionable parts.

Charge and activate the battery
- Connect a USB charger to the Neo’s USB-C port.
- DJI recommends its 65 W charger or a USB Power Delivery charger rated at least 30 W.
- Watch the battery LEDs. DJI uses the LED indication to show that the battery is being activated.
- Allow about one hour to charge one battery. This is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed time; temperature, charger output, battery condition, and firmware can change the result.
If you own several batteries, DJI says its Two-Way Charging Hub can charge multiple batteries and estimates about 60 minutes for three batteries when used with the 65 W charger. Neither the hub nor an extra battery is required for a first flight.
Remove the gimbal protector and power on
Take off the gimbal protector before switching on. Press the power button once, then press and hold it for two seconds to turn the Neo on or off. Keep the camera and gimbal clear while it initializes.
Activate and update DJI Neo in DJI Fly
- Install DJI Fly on your phone and connect the phone to the internet.
- Open DJI Fly and follow the activation process shown for the Neo.
- When the app offers a firmware update, install it before flying. Keep the aircraft powered and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Expect the aircraft to restart during an update. DJI says the Neo powers off when the update finishes, so restart it manually before continuing.
- After activation or updating, open the aircraft view and read every warning or self-diagnostic message.
Do not treat a warning as a notification to dismiss. Resolve the stated issue, restart the aircraft if DJI Fly requests it, and run the checks again. A phone with a nearly empty battery is also a poor controller: charge it before you travel, and avoid beginning a flight if the app cannot complete its startup diagnostics.

Keep the takeoff area level. A flat surface makes the startup and landing recognition more predictable and gives you room to step back without tripping.
Choose a control method
| Method | What it is suited to | What you must provide | Published operating limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palm Control | Simple, hands-free automated shots and a direct palm takeoff or landing | A level, still palm; a visible subject; good lighting; clear fingers and camera | Maximum altitude up to 30 m, according to DJI’s Palm Control guidance |
| DJI Fly app control | Camera settings, live view, and virtual-stick flight | Phone connected through DJI Fly’s Connection Guide; continuous visual awareness | Maximum altitude 30 m and maximum distance 50 m, according to DJI’s mobile-app control guidance |
| Other control methods | Additional operating options documented by DJI | Some require separately purchased accessories; check the current DJI documentation | Depends on the method and local rules |
The limits in the table are manufacturer mode limits, not permission to ignore local aviation requirements or the visual-line-of-sight requirement.
How to make the first Palm Control flight
1. Set up your hand and position
Wait for the Neo’s self-check to finish. Select the shooting mode you want, then hold the aircraft on a level, horizontal, motionless palm with the camera facing the intended subject. Keep your fingers away from every propeller and do not cover the camera.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →2. Wait for recognition and the countdown
Keep your hand still while the Neo recognizes the subject. Do not move as soon as the motors begin to respond. DJI’s procedure uses a voice countdown; wait for that countdown to complete before expecting takeoff. If recognition fails, lower the aircraft, improve the lighting, clear the background, and try again rather than waving or reaching toward the propellers.

3. Give the aircraft room
Once airborne, step back and maintain a clear view. Palm Control can keep the camera aimed at a recognized subject, but it cannot see every obstacle or decide whether a flight path is legal. Keep the first flight short and close enough that you can stop the activity and walk to a safe landing area.
4. Land on a palm without grabbing the aircraft
Wait until the Neo is hovering steadily. Approach it from a clear direction, extend a level and still palm beneath it, and wait for palm recognition and the landing action. DJI explicitly warns to avoid contact with the propellers and not to grab Neo while it is flying. Let it settle onto your hand; do not snatch it out of the air or place fingers around the body while the motors are running.
DJI states that Palm Control is not available in poor lighting. If the camera cannot see the subject or palm reliably, land using the app and move to a brighter location instead of forcing recognition.
How to make the first DJI Fly app flight
- Open DJI Fly and enter the aircraft view.
- Use the app’s Connection Guide and follow each on-screen connection instruction. Do not improvise a pairing sequence if the app reports that the aircraft or phone is not ready.
- Confirm the live camera view, battery status, and absence of warnings before starting the motors.
- Take off in the clear, level area and hover at a low, comfortable height while you verify that the controls respond as expected.
- Make small inputs only: forward, backward, sideways, and yaw one at a time. Release the virtual stick between inputs so you can observe the aircraft’s reaction.
- Keep the Neo within sight and within the manufacturer’s 30 m altitude and 50 m distance app-control envelope. Land while you still have ample battery reserve and a clear route back.
Do not use the published mode limits as a target. Wind, lighting, people, trees, buildings, and local restrictions may require a much smaller operating area.

Battery expectations and landing decisions
DJI Support lists approximately 18 minutes of flight time per battery, or approximately 17 minutes when propeller guards are installed. DJI describes controlled test conditions and warns that actual results vary with environment, use, and firmware version. Treat the figure as a planning reference, not a promise that 18 minutes will be available in every flight.
- Start with a full battery and a nearby landing area.
- Allow extra capacity for wind, a return, recognition delays, and a second landing attempt.
- Land immediately when DJI Fly gives a low-battery warning or when your view, surroundings, or control link becomes uncertain.
- After landing, wait for the propellers to stop before lifting the aircraft or inspecting it.
Weather, lighting, and site safety
Lighting
Bright, even light helps the camera recognize a palm and subject. Avoid deep shadow, glare, backlighting, and dusk for the first flight. Poor lighting can make Palm Control unavailable and can make obstacles harder for you to see, even though the Neo itself has no obstacle-avoidance system.
Obstacles and people
Keep well away from trees, branches, wires, poles, walls, vehicles, buildings, and crowds. A propeller guard can reduce the chance of a light side contact, but it does not make the aircraft safe to fly close to people or objects. Never rely on the guard as a substitute for clearance.
Water and night operations
DJI advises avoiding water and night flying. Water gives you no forgiving landing surface and can make a lost aircraft unrecoverable. Night conditions remove visual detail and make it harder to maintain orientation and line of sight.

Local rules and official documents
Because the pilot’s location is not specified, no single registration rule, altitude ceiling, operating distance, age requirement, or remote-identification obligation can be stated here as universal. Before each outing:
- Check your national or regional aviation authority for registration, pilot competency, airspace, privacy, and operating requirements.
- Review DJI Fly’s Before You Fly GEO Zone information for the proposed location.
- Confirm that the planned site is not restricted by a temporary notice, protected area, airport zone, event, or property rule.
- Carry the documents or proof your jurisdiction requires and follow any site-specific permission process.
DJI’s downloads page lists the DJI Neo User Manual v1.2 dated 2024-11-06, the Quick Start Guide v1.0 dated 2024-09-05, and the Safety Guidelines v1.0 dated 2024-09-05. Read the current versions before relying on a procedure, particularly after a firmware update.
First-flight troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely checks | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| Neo will not activate | Phone is offline, DJI Fly is not signed in or connected, or the battery has not been charged through USB-C | Connect the phone to the internet, reconnect the battery and charger, then repeat the in-app activation process |
| Firmware update appears finished but aircraft is off | DJI says the Neo powers off when the update completes | Restart the aircraft manually, reopen DJI Fly, and confirm the version and diagnostics |
| Palm takeoff does not begin | Palm is moving or tilted, lighting is poor, camera is covered, or the subject is not recognized | Stop, lower the aircraft, improve light and background, keep the palm level and still, and wait for the voice countdown |
| App shows a warning | Battery, propeller, guard, connection, or firmware condition may need attention | Do not take off until the warning is resolved and the self-check is clear |
| Aircraft approaches an object | No obstacle avoidance is available | Use the controls to create distance immediately; land in the nearest clear area rather than trying to pass the object |
| Landing palm is not recognized | Palm is moving, tilted, obscured, or poorly lit; aircraft may not be hovering steadily | Move to a clear, brighter position, wait for a stable hover, and present a level palm beneath the aircraft without grabbing it |
Optional items that can extend a flying session
A spare DJI Neo Intelligent Flight Battery is an optional way to spend more time flying after the first battery is safely landed and cooled as directed by DJI. DJI publishes the approximate flight-time figures above for this battery family. A DJI Neo Two-Way Charging Hub is useful when you have multiple batteries; DJI’s beginner guide describes charging three batteries in about 60 minutes with its 65 W charger. Verify current compatibility and charging instructions before purchasing or using any accessory.
Replacement propellers may eventually be needed after wear or damage. Use only the compatibility information and installation procedure in the current DJI documentation; do not fly with a blade that is chipped, bent, or incorrectly installed.
A practical first-flight plan
- At home, charge the battery, phone, and any required accessories; install DJI Fly and sign in.
- At the site, check local rules and DJI GEO Zone information before unpacking.
- Inspect the guards, propellers, gimbal, battery, and app diagnostics.
- In a bright open area, perform one short Palm Control hover and landing, or use DJI Fly if you need live view and manual inputs.
- Practice only gentle directional inputs and orientation changes while keeping the Neo in sight.
- Land with battery reserve, wait for the propellers to stop, and inspect the aircraft before packing it away.
This sequence keeps the first session focused on recognition, hovering, controlled movement, and a deliberate landing—the skills that matter before attempting longer automated shots or unfamiliar locations.
