The safest way to set up a retro handheld is to identify its exact model, operating system and firmware revision before changing the storage card or installing anything. A Retroid RP2, a supported Miyoo running Onion, a Miyoo using MiyooCFW and an ANBERNIC device may look similar, but they can require different card formats, folder names, firmware files and shutdown procedures.

Complete the first boot, back up the supplied card, then follow the manufacturer or firmware project’s instructions for that exact device. The workflow below explains what to check, which steps are model-specific and how to avoid the data loss and compatibility mistakes that commonly make a new handheld appear broken.

Start by identifying the handheld

Before downloading firmware or formatting a card, write down the information that determines compatibility:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Exact model: Include the model number and any regional, RAM, storage or screen variant.
  • Hardware revision: Record a revision printed on the case, box or system information screen if one is available.
  • Operating system: It may be Android, a Linux-based stock system, Onion or another custom firmware.
  • Firmware version: Find it in Settings, System Information or the manufacturer’s update utility.
  • Card configuration: Note the supplied card’s capacity and whether the device has one card slot or separate system and game storage.

Use the manufacturer’s manual and support page, plus the supported-device list for any custom firmware you are considering. A firmware package for a similar-looking handheld is not evidence that it will work on yours. ANBERNIC’s update listings, for example, separate packages by model and memory or card configuration.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Firmware versions and download packages change. Check the current listing immediately before an update rather than relying on an old filename, forum post or video.

Back up the supplied card before touching it

Make a complete computer copy of the included microSD card before formatting, partitioning, replacing or rearranging it. Copy hidden files and folders as well as visible game and system files. Preserve the original card in a safe place until the handheld is working from its replacement.

This is especially important for the Retroid RP2. Its getting-started documentation says the included card contains files required by RetroidOS. Formatting that card first can remove the resources the stock interface expects. The same guide advises powering the handheld fully off before removing the card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reliable backup procedure

  1. Shut the handheld down using its on-screen power menu.
  2. Remove the card only after the system is completely off.
  3. Insert it into a card reader that supports its capacity and filesystem.
  4. Copy the entire card to a clearly named folder such as handheld-original-card.
  5. Compare the computer copy with the card before making changes. Keep the original card read-only or stored separately if possible.

If the computer reports errors, stop and make another copy or an image of the card before proceeding. Do not use a questionable card as the only copy of firmware, saves or configuration files.

Complete the first boot before customizing

Turn the handheld on with its original card and complete the initial setup first. Set the language, time zone, display options and any account or network steps required by the operating system. Confirm that the device can boot normally and that the buttons, analog sticks, speakers and screen work before changing software.

Android-based handhelds

On an Android device, finish the on-device setup and connect to Wi-Fi before deciding whether to use the stock launcher, the manufacturer’s frontend or a different frontend. The Retroid RP2 documentation treats Android as the first-boot environment and RetroidOS as an optional route; those menu names and behaviors are specific to that model and its era, not a universal Android procedure.

Supported Miyoo hardware with Onion

Onion’s fresh-install process is for supported Miyoo models. It is not a generic package for every Miyoo-branded device. Confirm that your exact model appears in the project’s supported-device information, then use the current installation instructions for that model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose stock or custom firmware deliberately

Stock firmware is usually the lowest-risk starting point because it matches the device’s factory partitioning, drivers and recovery method. Custom firmware can provide a different interface, additional applications or a reorganized emulator setup, but it adds another compatibility layer and creates a larger recovery task if the flash is interrupted.

Decision factor Questions to answer
Hardware support Does the project explicitly support the exact model and revision?
Existing library and saves Will the new system use the same card folders, save locations and game formats?
Recovery Do you have the original card backup and a documented way to restore the stock system?
Emulator compatibility Will the required systems, cores, BIOS files and controller mappings be available?
Storage requirements Which filesystem, card capacity and partition layout does the firmware require?

Do not flash simply because another handheld uses the same processor or has a similar shell. The sources for Onion, MiyooCFW and ANBERNIC describe separate installation targets; none establishes one custom firmware as the correct choice for every retro handheld.

Prepare the replacement card using the device’s instructions

Filesystem requirements are not universal. Onion’s documented fresh-install flow specifies FAT32. The Retroid RP2 guide describes an exFAT replacement card for its RetroidOS setup and expects files from the original card to be copied into the structure it documents. These instructions should not be merged into a single rule such as “always format every card as FAT32” or “always use exFAT.”

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

General preparation steps

  1. Confirm the card capacity and filesystem required by the exact firmware guide.
  2. Format the replacement card with the recommended tool and settings.
  3. Safely eject it from the computer, then reinsert it so the computer mounts the new filesystem cleanly.
  4. Copy only the folders and files required by the documented installation process.
  5. Safely eject the card again before inserting it into the powered-off handheld.

Use a card reader rated for the card’s capacity. If a format utility offers multiple partition schemes, do not choose one based on a generic PC tutorial; use the handheld project’s documented choice. Keep the original backup untouched while testing the replacement.

Install Onion on a supported Miyoo device

Onion’s fresh-install instructions describe a particular sequence for supported Miyoo hardware:

  1. Prepare a compatible card using the filesystem specified by the Onion guide; its documented fresh-install flow uses FAT32.
  2. Extract the Onion package so its required folders are at the root of the card, not inside an extra directory created by the archive program.
  3. Leave the package’s update files in the locations specified by the guide. The Onion documentation explicitly says: “Despite its name, the .tmp_update folder must stay on your SD card.”
  4. Insert the card while the handheld is powered off and boot it to begin the installation.
  5. Open Package Manager after installation and select the systems and applications you actually want.
  6. Use the project’s documented refresh or reindex action after adding games so the frontend rebuilds its library.

Do not copy an Onion folder layout to a different operating system and expect it to be recognized. Folder names, launch scripts and package files are tied to the supported firmware.

Copy games and BIOS files legally

Use game files and BIOS files that you are legally entitled to use. This guide does not direct you to unauthorized downloads. Your rights and local law determine whether creating or using a backup is permitted.

Onion folder layout

Onion places game files in the matching system subfolders inside Roms. Put BIOS files in the BIOS folder only when the selected emulator requires them. A BIOS is not automatically needed for every system, and the exact filename and region requirements belong to the emulator or core documentation.

  1. Open the card’s Roms directory.
  2. Choose the subfolder for the system you are adding.
  3. Copy compatible game files into that system folder.
  4. Copy only required BIOS files into BIOS.
  5. Safely eject the card, insert it into the powered-off handheld and boot.
  6. Run the documented refresh or reindex command, then check whether the title appears under the expected system.

If a game is missing, first check spelling, extension, folder location and whether the chosen emulator supports that format. A missing BIOS can produce a black screen, a boot error or audio problems even when the game file is valid.

RetroidOS on the RP2

The RetroidOS import workflow is different. The cited RP2 guide instructs users to copy files to /games/download/, open External games management and select an emulator for each imported title. It also notes limitations involving compressed and multi-file games. Do not assume that every archive or multi-disc format will import correctly; use the format and extraction rules documented for the title and emulator.

Configure Android emulators and frontends

If you stay with Android, launch each emulator once before importing a large library. Grant only the storage permissions it requests for your game location, select the correct system profile and confirm where it writes saves. Frontends generally act as a catalog; the emulator remains responsible for graphics, audio, controls and save settings.

Keep libraries predictable

  • Use one top-level folder per system rather than mixing unrelated formats.
  • Keep multi-disc files together and follow the emulator’s naming convention.
  • Avoid renaming files after saves or metadata have been created unless the emulator documents how it matches them.
  • Back up save states and in-game saves separately from the game files.

On the RP2, the guide says controls are already configured in RetroidOS and its Android emulators. Treat that as an RP2-specific observation, not a promise that another Android handheld will have correct mappings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test controls, video, audio and saves

Do a short functional test before copying your full library. Choose a title for which you have rights and verify the entire path from frontend to emulator.

  1. Confirm the frontend displays the expected system and game.
  2. Launch the title and check that the intended emulator or core opens.
  3. Press every face button, shoulder button, stick, D-pad direction, menu key and hotkey used for exiting.
  4. Check aspect ratio, integer scaling, brightness, volume and screen orientation.
  5. Create an in-game save, exit through the emulator’s normal method and reload it.
  6. If you use save states, create one, close the emulator and verify that it is still present.

Save settings through that emulator’s own configuration workflow. A frontend’s menu may not write the emulator’s configuration file, and changing an emulator after creating save states can make those states unavailable.

Update firmware only when the package matches

Before applying an official update, verify the exact model, hardware variant, firmware version and storage configuration. Download the package from the manufacturer’s current support listing and read its warnings before copying files to a card.

ANBERNIC’s system-update listings illustrate the risk of treating packages as interchangeable. They include model-specific versions and warn that some 16 GB packages prevent SD expansion or ROM installation to the card after the operating system is installed. That warning can affect how you plan storage, so check the listing for your exact package rather than relying on the capacity printed on another model.

  1. Confirm the package name matches your model and variant.
  2. Read whether the update changes partitions, removes data or restricts later SD use.
  3. Back up the current card and saves again.
  4. Charge the handheld and keep it connected to stable power as the instructions require.
  5. Copy the update files exactly as documented; do not rename them unless told to do so.
  6. Start the update and do not remove power or the card while it is flashing.
  7. After reboot, check the firmware version, storage visibility, controls and saves.

If the device fails to boot after an update, stop repeated flashing attempts. Use the manufacturer’s model-specific recovery or flashing instructions and the original card backup. The ANBERNIC support portal provides troubleshooting resources by model; use the page for your device rather than a generic image.

Shut down safely to protect the card

Use the firmware’s shutdown command instead of pulling the card or holding the power button while files are being written. Removing power during a write can corrupt the filesystem, game list or save.

Miyoo Custom Firmware documentation says version 2.0.0 writes data every five seconds and recommends waiting at least five seconds after saving or performing a proper shutdown. Its documented menu path is the authority for that firmware. Other devices may flush data differently, so follow their own instructions rather than copying the timing blindly.

  1. Save the game through its normal in-game method.
  2. Wait for any save or library operation to finish.
  3. Open the firmware’s power or shutdown menu.
  4. Select the documented shutdown command and wait until the screen is fully off.
  5. Only then remove or replace the card.

MiyooCFW also recommends avoiding the card supplied in its package or unbranded cards because it considers them prone to corruption. That is the project’s recommendation, not a measured failure-rate claim for every bundled card. In all cases, retain a backup and use a reputable, compatible card whose capacity and filesystem match the device instructions.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The handheld will not boot after changing cards

  • Power it off completely and reseat the card.
  • Confirm the card was formatted with the required filesystem.
  • Check that installation folders are at the card root, not one directory deeper.
  • Restore the original card backup to determine whether the hardware still boots.
  • If the original works, revisit the exact firmware guide and model support list before trying again.

The game list is empty

  • Verify that games are in the expected system folder, such as the correct Roms subfolder for Onion.
  • Run the firmware’s refresh or reindex action.
  • Check file extensions and whether compressed archives are supported.
  • On RetroidOS, confirm the files were placed in /games/download/ and imported through External games management.

A game starts with a black screen or error

  • Confirm the selected emulator supports the game’s system and format.
  • Check whether that emulator requires a BIOS and whether the file is in the required location.
  • Try the documented core or emulator for that system instead of changing unrelated settings.
  • For multi-file or multi-disc games, keep all parts together and follow the emulator’s naming rules.

Saves disappeared

  • Reopen the same emulator and check its documented save directory.
  • Make sure the frontend did not launch a different core or emulator.
  • Restore the backed-up save files only after identifying the correct location.
  • Avoid changing filenames or card layouts while troubleshooting; make a copy first.

The update removed expected storage features

Review the exact firmware package notes. Some ANBERNIC 16 GB packages warn that SD expansion or ROM installation on the card will not be available after installation. If that is your situation, use the manufacturer’s recovery guidance rather than repartitioning at random.

Practical setup checklist

  • Exact model, revision, operating system and firmware version recorded.
  • Manufacturer and custom-firmware support pages checked for that exact device.
  • Complete backup of the supplied card made and verified.
  • First boot, controls, display, audio and Wi-Fi tested before customization.
  • Stock versus custom firmware chosen with a recovery plan.
  • Replacement card formatted with the firmware’s stated filesystem.
  • Installation files copied to the correct card root.
  • Legally obtained games and only required BIOS files copied to documented folders.
  • Frontend refreshed and one game tested from launch through save and shutdown.
  • Firmware updates checked for model, variant, capacity and storage caveats.
  • Proper shutdown used every time before card removal.
