Changing an Apex Pro’s actuation point and calibrating its OmniPoint switches solve different problems. Actuation adjustment changes how far a key must travel before it registers. Calibration is a troubleshooting routine for ghost inputs, and the documented shortcut in this guide applies specifically to the Apex Pro TKL 2023. First identify your keyboard generation, then use the matching control method below.

Actuation adjustment versus calibration

An actuation point is the travel threshold at which an OmniPoint switch sends a keypress. A lower setting registers with a lighter, shorter press, which can feel faster for movement keys. A higher setting requires more travel and can reduce accidental activation from resting or brushing a key.

Calibration measures the usable travel of the switches so the keyboard can interpret their positions correctly. It is not a routine replacement for changing sensitivity. Use calibration when the Apex Pro TKL 2023 produces ghost inputs or otherwise appears to register keys incorrectly; do not run it merely because you want a different actuation level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These operations also have different requirements. The TKL 2023 shortcut is stored and changed from the keyboard, while the documented calibration sequence is an onboard recovery routine that requires the latest SteelSeries GG installation and a complete pass over the OmniPoint keys. A key that feels too sensitive needs an actuation change; a key that appears to activate without a deliberate press may need calibration instead.

Identify the exact Apex Pro model first

SteelSeries has separate instructions for the TKL 2023, OLED-equipped boards, legacy full-size and TKL models, and Gen 3. The shortcut, software requirement, number of levels, and available millimeter range depend on that generation.

Keyboard family Primary control Actuation information documented by SteelSeries Calibration scope
Apex Pro TKL 2023 wired or wireless SteelSeries Function key plus O or I Ten levels; number keys 1–0 indicate the selected level The onboard ghost-input routine documented for Apex Pro TKL 2023
Apex Pro models with the OLED menu hardware OLED Menu Button and multimedia roller Levels 1–10, previewed on the OLED Use the instructions that match the specific model; the TKL 2023 shortcut should not be generalized
Legacy Apex Pro full-size and TKL SteelSeries GG Engine Actuation tab Levels 1–10 mapped from 0.2 mm to 3.8 mm; level 5/default is 1.8 mm Follow model-specific support instructions rather than assuming the TKL 2023 routine applies
Apex Pro Gen 3 TKL SteelSeries GG 61 adjustable keys, with a 0.1–4 mm range Use Gen 3-specific guidance

Look at the product name printed on the keyboard, packaging, or SteelSeries GG device page before changing anything. “Apex Pro” alone does not identify the generation. TKL describes the layout, not necessarily the generation: a legacy TKL, TKL 2023, and Gen 3 TKL can have different controls even though all omit a number pad.

The physical controls are useful clues. An OLED Menu Button and multimedia roller indicate an OLED-equipped route. A TKL 2023 wired or wireless board uses the SteelSeries Function key shortcut for its ten levels. A Gen 3 TKL is identified separately in GG and exposes a direct 0.1–4 mm range. If the device name in GG does not match the instructions you are following, stop and identify the board again rather than experimenting with another generation’s key combination.

Change actuation on the Apex Pro TKL 2023

For the wired and wireless TKL 2023, SteelSeries says direct adjustment requires no SteelSeries GG software. The keyboard has ten actuation levels.

  1. Hold the SteelSeries Function key.
  2. While holding it, press O or I to cycle through the available actuation levels.
  3. Watch the number row. Keys 1 through 0 illuminate to show the currently selected level.
  4. Release the Function key after the desired level is displayed and test the keys in the application where you noticed the issue.

Level numbers represent relative sensitivity, not a universal millimeter value in the TKL 2023 shortcut article. A lower level activates with a lighter, faster press. A higher level requires pressing farther down before the key registers. Because the shortcut changes the threshold directly on the keyboard, it is useful when you are away from the computer running SteelSeries GG.

Cycle one step at a time and note which number is lit before testing. This makes it easier to return to a known setting if a lower level causes unintended presses. Test both a light, intentional tap and a more forceful press; the goal is for the intended press to register consistently without a resting finger triggering the key.

If the shortcut appears not to work

  • Confirm that the keyboard is actually the TKL 2023 wired or wireless model rather than a legacy or Gen 3 board.
  • Check that you are holding the SteelSeries Function key while pressing O or I.
  • Look for the illuminated number key; that indicator is the confirmation of the selected level.
  • If the problem is a key registering by itself, stop changing levels and use the calibration procedure in the section below.
  • Do not expect a millimeter number on the number row. The shortcut exposes ten levels, while some other generations expose a distance in GG.

Use the OLED menu on an OLED-equipped Apex Pro

Some Apex Pro keyboards have an OLED Menu Button and a multimedia volume roller. On models covered by SteelSeries’ general Apex Pro/Apex Pro TKL manual, the OLED is the hardware route for setting actuation.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press and hold the OLED Menu Button for four seconds.
  2. Turn the multimedia volume roller until ACTUATION is highlighted.
  3. Click the roller to open the actuation setting.
  4. Select a level from 1 through 10 with the roller and confirm the selection.
  5. Press an OmniPoint key to preview its sensitivity on the OLED.

This menu path is tied to the presence of the OLED controls. Do not assume that every Apex Pro, especially a TKL 2023 unit without those controls, exposes the same menu. If the keyboard has no OLED Menu Button or roller, use the instructions for its actual generation rather than trying to reproduce this sequence.

Configure legacy Apex Pro full-size and TKL models in SteelSeries GG

SteelSeries’ legacy support instructions use the Engine Actuation tab. They require SteelSeries GG 27.0 or later. In GG, enter an actuation value or move the slider, then apply the setting to the keyboard profile.

Legacy level Actuation distance
1 0.2 mm
2 0.6 mm
3 1.0 mm
4 1.4 mm
5 (default) 1.8 mm
6 2.2 mm
7 2.6 mm
8 3.0 mm
9 3.4 mm
10 3.8 mm

These millimeter conversions belong to the legacy full-size and TKL documentation. They are not a universal conversion table for the TKL 2023 shortcut, OLED models, or Gen 3. In particular, do not select level 5 on a newer model and assume that it necessarily means 1.8 mm.

Legacy GG workflow

  1. Install or update SteelSeries GG to version 27.0 or later.
  2. Connect the keyboard and open GG.
  3. Select the Apex Pro device and open the Engine Actuation tab.
  4. Enter the desired distance or move the actuation slider.
  5. Save or apply the profile, then test several keys, including the keys whose behavior prompted the change.

Keep the legacy table available while entering a value so you can distinguish an actuation distance from a level number. A value near the shallow end is more sensitive; a value near the deep end requires more travel. The documented default for this legacy scale is level 5, or 1.8 mm.

Set actuation on Apex Pro Gen 3 TKL

SteelSeries documents the Apex Pro Gen 3 TKL separately from the TKL 2023. Through SteelSeries GG, 61 keys can have their actuation adjusted. The documented range is 0.1 mm to 4 mm; the product description presents the same range as 0.1–4.0 mm.

Open the Apex Pro Gen 3 TKL in GG, select the actuation controls, choose the key or keys to edit, and set a value within that range. The Gen 3 range should not be inferred from the ten-level TKL 2023 keyboard shortcut or from the legacy conversion table.

Because the Gen 3 control is expressed in millimeters, record the value you choose if you expect to switch between profiles. The 61-key figure describes the adjustable OmniPoint key set, not every physical key on the keyboard. If a function, arrow, or other non-OmniPoint key is not available for editing, that is a hardware-zone limitation rather than a calibration failure.

Calibrate the Apex Pro TKL 2023 for ghost inputs

SteelSeries’ article titled “Apex Pro TKL 2023 Actuation Calibration” describes this onboard routine as a response to ghost inputs. It requires the latest SteelSeries GG installed, even though ordinary TKL 2023 actuation changes do not require GG. Remove the magnetic wrist rest before starting so it does not interfere with the procedure. No replacement part, accessory, or repair tool is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Unplug the keyboard. If you use the wireless model, unplug its dongle as well.
  2. Hold the SteelSeries key, I, and O simultaneously while plugging the keyboard back in.
  3. Wait for the OmniPoint keys to illuminate yellow, then release the key combination.
  4. While the keys are yellow, fully press every OmniPoint key at least once. Bottom out each key; a soft or partial press will not register for calibration.
  5. Watch each completed key change to soft white. Continue until every OmniPoint key has changed.
  6. When all keys are complete, the SteelSeries key, I, and O pulse red.
  7. Press SteelSeries key plus I plus O again to save the calibration and return to normal operation.

Unplugging and reconnecting at any point exits the routine without saving. If the result seems wrong, restart the process and press every OmniPoint key all the way down. SteelSeries Support states that calibrating the OmniPoint keys will not harm the keyboard and that the process can be restarted if the calibration feels off.

The order matters: connect while holding all three keys, release only after the yellow indication appears, complete every OmniPoint key, and save only after the red pulse. Pressing a key lightly, skipping keys that seem fine, or disconnecting before the final save leaves the calibration incomplete.

What the calibration lights mean

  • Yellow: the keyboard is waiting for a full press on each OmniPoint key.
  • Soft white: that key has been accepted by the calibration routine.
  • Pulsing red on the SteelSeries, I, and O keys: all required keys have been pressed and the keyboard is waiting for the save command.

Calibration failure points

  • A key remains yellow: press it firmly to the bottom of its travel. A light touch is intentionally ignored.
  • The routine never starts: verify the exact TKL 2023 model, disconnect and reconnect while holding all three keys, and ensure the latest GG installation is present.
  • The result is still inaccurate: repeat the routine and make sure every OmniPoint key, not only the troublesome key, is fully pressed.
  • You need to abandon the routine: unplugging and reconnecting exits without saving the incomplete calibration.
  • A wireless board remains connected: remove both the keyboard connection and its dongle before restarting the sequence.

The documented calibration shortcut is specific to the Apex Pro TKL 2023 article. There is no basis to apply this exact key combination to every Apex Pro generation. Legacy, OLED-equipped, and Gen 3 boards require model-specific support instructions if calibration is needed.

Optional: configure Dual Actuation

Dual Actuation is separate from ordinary actuation adjustment and from calibration. On supported OmniPoint keys, it assigns one action to a shallow press and a second action to a deeper press. SteelSeries’ example uses a 1.0 mm main actuation and a 3.4 mm dual trigger, then assigns W a second action such as Shift + W through Dual Bindings.

Set up a dual trigger

  1. Open the keyboard’s actuation controls in SteelSeries GG.
  2. Enable Dual Actuation for the desired OmniPoint key zone.
  3. Set the primary actuation depth, such as 1.0 mm in SteelSeries’ example.
  4. Set the deeper dual-actuation depth, such as 3.4 mm in that example.
  5. Use Dual Bindings to assign the second action.
  6. Apply the configuration and test both press depths in the target application.

The defaults select all OmniPoint keys, but you can select keys individually. Keep a meaningful distance between the two thresholds. SteelSeries warns that when the primary and dual points are too close, the keyboard may skip one of the triggers. Test a shallow press that stops before the second point and a deliberate deeper press that reaches it.

Dual Actuation is limited to the Standard Key Zone because OmniPoint switches are limited to that zone. SteelSeries specifically excludes function keys, arrow keys, and numpad keys. If a key is outside that zone, changing the ordinary actuation setting does not make Dual Actuation available.

Choose a practical actuation level

There is no single best actuation number. The right threshold depends on whether you prioritize rapid activation, resistance to accidental presses, or a balance between the two. SteelSeries’ examples illustrate available settings; they are not a universal prescription.

For rapid movement or repeated taps

Start with a lower level on the TKL 2023, or a smaller millimeter value on a model that accepts direct distance entry. Press lightly enough to verify that the key activates when intended, then test repeated taps and direction changes. If resting a finger causes unintended input, increase the threshold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For deliberate typing

A middle setting is a reasonable starting point because it provides more travel than the most sensitive setting without requiring a bottom-out press. Type a representative paragraph and check for accidental capitals, repeated letters, or keys activating while your fingers hover.

For a mixed profile

Use per-key controls where the model supports them. Movement keys can use a more sensitive threshold while frequently mistyped keys use a deeper one. Gen 3 supports adjustment across 61 keys, and Dual Actuation can add a second action where the selected key is in the supported Standard Key Zone.

Change one variable at a time. If you alter actuation, Dual Actuation, and calibration together, it becomes difficult to tell which change fixed or created a symptom. For ordinary sensitivity complaints, set actuation first and test. Reserve calibration for ghost-input behavior, and configure Dual Actuation only after the basic key response is reliable.

Verification checklist after changing or calibrating

  • Confirm the keyboard generation and use its matching control route.
  • Check the illuminated number indicator, OLED preview, or GG value to verify the selected actuation setting.
  • Test a light press and a deliberate press on several OmniPoint keys.
  • For calibration, confirm every key changed from yellow to soft white before saving.
  • Test in the application where the problem occurs, because a setting that feels correct in a text editor may feel too sensitive during gameplay.
  • If ghost inputs persist after a correctly completed TKL 2023 calibration, repeat the procedure before changing actuation levels or Dual Actuation assignments.
  • Confirm that the key you are editing is an OmniPoint key when a feature is unavailable.
  • Keep the selected level or millimeter value noted so you can restore it after testing another setting.

Which procedure should you use?

Use the SteelSeries Function key plus O or I for a TKL 2023 wired or wireless board when you simply want to change sensitivity. Use the OLED Menu Button route when your Apex Pro has the documented OLED controls. Use Engine Actuation in GG for legacy full-size or TKL models, and use the Gen 3 GG controls for the Apex Pro Gen 3 TKL’s 0.1–4 mm range. Use the yellow-key calibration routine only for the ghost-input problem documented for the Apex Pro TKL 2023. Dual Actuation is an optional layer for two actions at two depths, not a calibration method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nothing in these procedures requires buying an accessory. The only software requirement called out for ordinary legacy adjustment is SteelSeries GG 27.0 or later, while the TKL 2023 calibration article asks for the latest GG installation. If you are choosing hardware rather than configuring an existing board, verify the exact Apex Pro generation and whether it has the OmniPoint keys and OLED controls needed for the feature you want.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need SteelSeries GG to change actuation on the Apex Pro TKL 2023?

No. SteelSeries says the wired and wireless TKL 2023 can cycle through ten actuation levels directly with the SteelSeries Function key plus O or I. The documented calibration routine, however, asks that the latest GG be installed.

What do the number keys 1 through 0 mean on the TKL 2023?

They illuminate to show which of the ten actuation levels is selected. The shortcut article does not assign those levels universal millimeter values.

How do I open actuation settings on an OLED Apex Pro?

Hold the OLED Menu Button for four seconds, scroll to ACTUATION with the multimedia roller, click the roller, choose level 1–10, and press an OmniPoint key to preview the sensitivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the legacy Apex Pro default actuation distance?

In SteelSeries’ legacy table, level 5 is the default and equals 1.8 mm. That conversion should not be applied to newer generations.

What range does the Apex Pro Gen 3 TKL support?

SteelSeries documents 61 adjustable keys with a 0.1–4 mm range in GG, also advertised as 0.1–4.0 mm. It is separate from the TKL 2023 ten-level shortcut.

When should I calibrate instead of changing actuation?

Calibrate when the Apex Pro TKL 2023 produces ghost inputs or interprets key positions incorrectly. Changing actuation only changes the registration threshold and does not replace calibration.

Do I have to bottom out every key during TKL 2023 calibration?

Yes. While the keys are yellow, fully press every OmniPoint key at least once. SteelSeries says a soft or partial press will not register for calibration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I disconnect before saving calibration?

Unplugging and reconnecting exits the routine without saving. Restart the sequence, complete every key, wait for the red pulse, and press SteelSeries key plus I plus O to save.

Can Dual Actuation use function, arrow, or numpad keys?

No. SteelSeries limits Dual Actuation to the Standard Key Zone and specifically excludes function keys, arrow keys, and numpad keys.

What Dual Actuation values does SteelSeries demonstrate?

Its example uses a 1.0 mm primary actuation and a 3.4 mm deeper trigger, with a second action such as Shift + W assigned through Dual Bindings. Keep the two points separated because very close thresholds can skip a trigger.

The Bottom Line

Match the procedure to the exact Apex Pro generation. Use the TKL 2023 shortcut for a normal ten-level sensitivity change, OLED controls where the hardware is present, legacy GG values for older full-size and TKL boards, and Gen 3 GG controls for the 0.1–4 mm range. Run the yellow-key calibration only on a TKL 2023 when ghost inputs require it, fully bottom out every OmniPoint key, and save only after the red confirmation pulse.
