For the best Xbox Series X|S setup, connect the console with its included HDMI cable to the television’s most capable HDMI input, complete the online Microsoft-account setup, then use Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details to choose the highest resolution and refresh rate that your exact display, port, cable and game support together.

Series X and Series S do not offer identical targets: Series X is positioned for native 4K gaming and has disc-equipped configurations, while the disc-free Series S is designed around 1440p with 4K upscaling. A basic 4K/60Hz television can still provide a good experience; 4K at 120Hz is an optional high-end configuration, not a requirement.

What you need before turning on the console

Put the Xbox on a firm surface with its ventilation openings clear. Do not place it in a tightly enclosed cabinet or cover the vents with other equipment. Have the following ready:

  • The console’s included power cable and HDMI cable.
  • A television or monitor with an available HDMI input.
  • Internet access and the Microsoft-account details you intend to use.
  • A phone or tablet with the Xbox app if you want to use the app-assisted setup flow described by Xbox.
  • Any game discs only if you own a Series X configuration with a disc drive. Series S is disc-free.

Microsoft’s console product guide says broadband internet, a Microsoft account and an Xbox profile are required for initial online setup, downloads, mandatory updates (some of them significant) and certain features, including retention of gameplay settings and information. The guide lists 1.5 Mbps download and 768 Kbps upload as its broadband requirement. Those figures describe the guide’s setup requirement; they are not a promise of smooth multiplayer performance.

For 4K video streaming, the same 2020 Microsoft guide lists 18–24 Mbps download speed. Streaming services and network conditions vary, so treat that as a document-specific requirement rather than a universal recommendation for every household.

Connect the Xbox to your TV or monitor

  1. Place the console where air can circulate around its vents.
  2. Connect the included power cable to the console and a suitable wall outlet or surge-protected power strip.
  3. Connect the included HDMI cable from the console’s HDMI output to the display input you plan to use.
  4. Turn on the television or monitor and select that exact HDMI input.
  5. Turn on the Xbox and follow the on-screen prompts. If you are using the Xbox app, keep the phone or tablet and console on the network while the app guides the setup.

Use the supplied HDMI cable first. Buy a replacement only if the original is missing or damaged, or if a particular installation requires a replacement with the necessary capability. A different cable cannot make a television or HDMI input support features that its hardware does not provide.

Complete the first-run software setup

Connect to the network

Choose your wireless network during setup and enter its password, or connect an Ethernet cable if your installation allows it. The console needs an online connection for the initial setup process, account sign-in, downloads and mandatory updates. Let updates finish before judging the console’s performance or changing advanced display settings.

Sign in with the right Microsoft account

Use the Microsoft account that should own your Xbox profile, subscriptions and digital purchases. The account and Xbox profile are part of the requirements Microsoft lists for online setup. If several people will use the console, finish the owner’s setup first, then add other profiles through the console’s account options.

Allow the console to apply updates

Initial downloads can be substantial. Keep the console powered and connected until the update and setup screens complete. Interrupting an update can leave the software in an incomplete state and force the process to start again.

Check the result before installing games

After reaching the Xbox home screen, verify that the console is online and signed in. Install a game or app only after the first-run update has completed; otherwise, a large game download and a system update may compete for the same connection and storage at once.

Identify your console model before choosing settings

The model determines the sensible display target, whether discs are usable and how much internal storage you start with. Microsoft describes the models this way:

Do not assume that every Series X package has the same drive or storage capacity. Check the label, packaging or the console’s model information. A Series S cannot accept a game disc, and its 4K-capable output should not be interpreted as proof that every game renders natively at 4K. Actual output varies by title and display on both models.

Check what the display actually supports

  1. Open Settings > General > TV & display options.
  2. Select 4K TV details.
  3. Read the capability report shown for the connected television or monitor.
  4. Return to the TV & display options page and select the highest resolution and refresh rate that the report, your active HDMI input, cable and content support together.

The 4K TV details screen is more reliable than a television’s marketing label because it reports what the Xbox detects through the connection you are actually using. If you move the console to another HDMI input, run the check again: manufacturers often reserve high-bandwidth features for particular inputs.

Why the HDMI input matters

A television can have several HDMI sockets with different capabilities. One may accept 4K at 120Hz, while another accepts only 4K at 60Hz or a lower bandwidth. Some televisions also require you to enable an input mode such as enhanced, deep-color or high-bandwidth operation in the TV’s own settings. Menu names differ by manufacturer, so use the television’s manual for the exact path.

Xbox Wire’s 2020 TV guidance says, “Games will look and play best on TVs that have an HDMI 2.1 port that’s capable of 4K and 120 frames per second.” That is guidance for the highest supported combination, not a universal requirement for Series X|S play. The consoles remain usable on displays without HDMI 2.1; the available resolution and refresh-rate combinations simply depend on that display and its input.

Choose resolution and refresh rate intelligently

Set the console to the best combination that all parts of the chain can sustain. A higher number is not automatically better if it causes a blank screen, flicker or an unsupported signal.

Your display and connection Practical target What to verify
4K television with a 60Hz limit 4K at 60Hz, with HDR when the TV and Xbox report support Use the TV input that supports 4K and enable the manufacturer’s required input mode
4K television and HDMI 2.1 input capable of 120Hz 4K at up to 120Hz where the game and display support it Confirm the 120Hz option appears in 4K TV details and in TV & display options
1440p monitor or television 1440p at the highest supported refresh rate Check whether the active HDMI input accepts that refresh rate
1080p display 1080p at the display’s supported refresh rate Do not force 4K or HDR modes the display cannot report

Xbox Wire describes Series X|S support for up to 120Hz, Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), but each feature depends on compatible equipment and content. The presence of a feature in the console does not make it available through every TV, port or game.

HDR

Enable HDR only when the television supports it and the Xbox’s 4K TV details screen reports compatibility. HDR can require a specific HDMI input mode on the television. If the picture looks wrong or the signal becomes unstable, return to the supported mode reported by the Xbox and check the TV manual rather than forcing every video option.

120Hz

Choose 120Hz only when the display, active HDMI input, cable and game support it. The console’s menu may offer a setting that a particular game does not use; the game’s own rendering mode determines whether it takes advantage of the refresh rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ALLM and VRR

ALLM can let a compatible television switch into its low-latency game mode, while VRR can synchronize refresh behavior on compatible equipment. These are optional capabilities. If the TV does not report them, leave them off; if enabling one causes flicker or other instability, use the supported configuration shown in 4K TV details and consult the TV documentation.

Set up a Series X for its strengths

Series X is the better fit for an owner who wants the possibility of native 4K gaming or needs a console with UHD Blu-ray capability in an edition that includes the drive. Connect it to the display’s highest-bandwidth HDMI input, then select the highest supported resolution and refresh rate reported by the console.

Do not infer that every title will render at native 4K or 120 frames per second. Game-specific modes, display limits and the active HDMI input still determine the result. If you own a disc-equipped edition, insert a compatible game or movie disc only after the console has completed its first-run update and account setup.

Set up a Series S for its strengths

Series S is a disc-free console designed around 1440p gaming with upscaling to 4K. Set a 1440p target when the display supports it, or use 4K output when the console and television report that combination and you prefer the television’s upscaling path. Neither choice changes the fact that individual games can use different internal resolutions.

Because Series S has no disc drive, plan on downloading games or using compatible digital access. Choose the 512GB or 1TB model you actually own when estimating available space; the nominal SSD capacity is not the same as the free space shown after system software is installed.

Expand storage without losing optimized-game performance

Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card

Xbox describes its Series X|S Storage Expansion Card as matching the performance of the internal SSD. That makes it the clearest physical expansion choice when you want additional room while preserving the storage-performance path intended for Series X|S optimized games. Xbox’s Series X product page recommends the 1TB card.

  • [SEAMLESS COMPATIBILITY] Specifically designed for Series X/S systems, this external hard drive box is essential for gamers eager to optimize their storage capabilities.

Before buying, verify the current capacity, model compatibility, regional availability and live price for your location. Product listings and bundles can change, so do not assume that a card shown for one market or console package has identical availability elsewhere.

External USB storage

An external USB drive can be useful for compatible storage and for moving games between drives. Xbox’s storage explanation distinguishes this from the internal-SSD and expansion-card path used by optimized games. Do not assume that every external drive can launch every Series X|S optimized title at full performance. If a title requires the faster storage path, move it to the internal SSD or a compatible expansion card before playing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide whether expansion is worthwhile

  • Choose an expansion card when you regularly keep several optimized games installed and want internal-like performance.
  • Use USB storage when your main need is additional capacity or transferring games, and you are comfortable moving some titles before playing them.
  • Start with the console’s free-space figure rather than the printed capacity, then add storage when downloads repeatedly force you to uninstall games you still use.

Troubleshoot the most common setup problems

The Xbox shows no picture

  1. Confirm the television is on the HDMI input connected to the console.
  2. Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
  3. Try the television’s other HDMI inputs, then run Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details after a picture returns.
  4. If a high-resolution or high-refresh mode caused the failure, select a supported lower mode and check the TV’s manual for the required input setting.

4K, HDR or 120Hz is missing

Check the active HDMI input first. The TV may reserve the feature for one socket or require an enhanced-input setting. Confirm that the Xbox’s 4K TV details screen reports the capability, then verify the television’s own settings. A cable cannot add a feature that the port does not support.

The picture flickers or becomes unstable

Return to the resolution and refresh rate reported as supported by 4K TV details. Disable an optional HDR, ALLM or VRR setting that the television does not handle reliably, then consult the TV manual for firmware or input-mode guidance. Re-enable features one at a time only after the basic signal is stable.

Setup or downloads will not finish

Confirm that the console is connected to the intended network and that your Microsoft account and Xbox profile are available. Remember that Microsoft’s guide lists 1.5 Mbps down and 768 Kbps up for its stated broadband setup requirement, while large mandatory updates can still take considerable time. Keep the console connected and powered until the update completes.

A game will not run from a USB drive

Check whether the game is a Series X|S optimized title that requires the internal SSD or Storage Expansion Card performance path. Move it to internal storage or a compatible expansion card instead of assuming the USB drive can launch it at full performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical final check

  • The console has unobstructed ventilation.
  • The included HDMI cable is connected to the display input you intend to use.
  • The Xbox is online, updated and signed in with the correct Microsoft account.
  • 4K TV details has been checked after the final HDMI input and TV settings were selected.
  • Resolution and refresh rate match the display’s reported capabilities.
  • HDR, ALLM and VRR are enabled only when the TV and Xbox report support.
  • Your expectations match the model: Series X can target native 4K and may include a disc drive; Series S is disc-free and designed around 1440p with 4K upscaling.
  • Storage plans distinguish between the internal or expansion-card path for optimized games and USB storage used for compatible storage or transfers.

Bottom line

The best setup is the highest stable mode your complete chain supports, not the most aggressive option in the menu. Finish the online setup and updates, use the display’s most capable HDMI input, verify capabilities in 4K TV details, and choose resolution, refresh rate and HDR features from that evidence. Series X owners can pursue native 4K and disc playback where their edition supports it; Series S owners should plan for disc-free 1440p-focused gaming and add an expansion card when they need more fast storage.
