To set up a new Xbox, connect it to an HDMI-capable television and broadband internet, sign in with the Microsoft account you plan to keep using, and let the initial setup and console update finish. If you are moving from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, keep both consoles available and use Microsoft’s current Move from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S instructions for the actual transfer workflow. Your account and Xbox profile are central to online setup and to retaining gameplay settings and information, but Microsoft’s support page should be checked for the exact current transfer limits and menu choices.
What you need before turning on the Xbox
Xbox’s getting-started guidance identifies four essentials: the console, a Microsoft account, broadband internet, and an HDMI-capable TV. Put the console where it has adequate ventilation, connect its power cable, and connect HDMI from the console to an available HDMI input on the television. Select that input on the TV before beginning the on-screen setup.
| Requirement | Why it matters | What to have ready |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox console | The device being configured or replaced. | Console, power cable and the controller supplied with it. |
| HDMI-capable TV | Displays the setup screens and game output. | An unused HDMI input and the TV remote to select it. |
| Broadband internet | Needed for online setup, downloads and mandatory updates. | Your Wi-Fi details or a network connection available near the console. |
| Microsoft account | Provides the Xbox profile used for online setup and services. | The account you want associated with purchases, gameplay information and family settings. |
You do not necessarily need a new account. Xbox Wire’s November 15, 2024 setup guide explains that an existing Microsoft account used for services such as Windows, Office or Outlook can be used on Xbox. If several people use the console, decide in advance which account belongs to each player so that profiles and family controls are not mixed together.

Before unpacking, locate the account credentials for every player who will move from the old console. Knowing the correct email address and password is more useful than trying to identify profiles by display name after the new Xbox is already configured. Keep the old console, its controller and any storage devices nearby until you have checked the new setup.

Set up the console step by step
- Connect the hardware. Plug in the console, connect HDMI to the TV, turn on the TV and select the matching HDMI input. Turn on the Xbox with its power button or controller.
- Pair and use the controller. Follow the on-screen pairing prompt. Keep the controller connected or charged while setup and the first update are running.
- Choose a network. Select your home network when prompted and enter its password, or use a wired connection if that is how your network is arranged. The console needs broadband access to complete online setup and obtain required downloads.
- Sign in with the intended Microsoft account. Use the existing account you want to keep, or create one during setup. The Xbox Series X|S product guide states that an account and Xbox profile are required for online setup, downloads and mandatory updates, and for some features that retain gameplay settings and information; the guide is available as the Xbox Series X + S Manual and Product Guide.
- Allow setup and updating to finish. Do not interrupt the initial configuration or switch off the console while an update is being installed. Xbox Wire recommends completing setup and the console update before connecting additional peripherals such as an external hard drive or a battery-charging station.
- Complete the profile and privacy choices. Review the account, privacy and communication choices shown on screen. Use the account belonging to the person who will actually play; adding another person’s account later does not change which profile was used for the initial configuration.
- Apply family controls when needed. If children will use the console, configure controls before handing it over. Xbox’s getting-started page points to Xbox Family Settings, while Xbox Wire describes controls for screen time, content restrictions, chat access, friends and spending. These controls should be set for the child’s account rather than treated as a substitute for a separate adult profile.
- Connect optional accessories after the update. Once the first update and setup are complete, attach external storage, charging equipment or other peripherals and follow the accessory’s own instructions.
Initial setup can look different as Xbox updates its software. Follow the prompts on your screen rather than relying on an old screenshot or a menu path from a previous console generation. If the console asks you to restart during setup, use the on-screen instruction and allow it to return to the setup process.
Why the Microsoft account matters when moving to a new Xbox
Use the same Microsoft account on the new console that you used for the Xbox profile you intend to continue. The account is not merely a login for the store: the product guide links an account and Xbox profile to online setup, downloads, mandatory updates and retention of gameplay settings and information.
If more than one account was used on the old Xbox, make a list before migration. Note which account each person uses and which profile should be signed in first on the new console. This prevents a common setup error—configuring the new Xbox with a different account and then assuming the old profile’s information will appear automatically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAn existing Microsoft account from Windows, Office or Outlook is acceptable according to Xbox Wire. You do not need to create a separate email address solely for the console unless you want a separate identity. Keep purchases and gameplay associated with the account that originally used them, and double-check the spelling of each sign-in address before proceeding.
Move games and settings from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S
The official migration scenario covered by Xbox documentation is Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S. Microsoft maintains a dedicated Move from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S support article. Use that live page for the current transfer procedure, because its menu labels, transfer choices and limits can change with console software.
The page’s text is not consistently exposed without JavaScript in every reading environment. If it shows a JavaScript requirement, open it in a current browser with JavaScript enabled. Do not rely on an old guide that supplies exact menus from memory. The live Xbox Support page is the place to confirm which transfer options your consoles currently offer, what prerequisites it lists and which content or settings are covered.

Prepare both consoles
- Keep the Xbox One available until you have checked the new console. Do not erase, sell or reset it before you know that the new Xbox contains what you need.
- Finish the new console’s initial setup and update first. Xbox Wire recommends completing those steps before attaching peripherals, so do not begin by connecting every drive and charging station you own.
- Have the Microsoft account credentials for the intended Xbox profile available. If several players are moving, identify each profile before starting.
- Review free space on the new console. Xbox lists uninstalling games, connecting an external hard drive and adding a storage expansion card as the three general ways to make room.
- Read the live migration article immediately before starting. It is the authoritative place to confirm the currently supported transfer method, prerequisites, limits and prompts shown by your software version.
Start the transfer from the official workflow
- Open the live Xbox Support migration article and follow its current instructions for Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S.
- When the guide asks you to choose a console, account or content, verify the identity on screen instead of accepting a similarly named profile.
- Let the consoles complete the operation and follow any restart or sign-in prompts exactly as shown. Do not interrupt a transfer unless the current instructions tell you to do so.
- When the process reports completion, sign in on the Series X|S with the account you selected and inspect the installed content and settings that matter to you.
This article does not claim that every save, license, setting, game version or add-on transfers in every circumstance. Microsoft’s live support page is the correct source for those details, and compatibility can depend on the title and account involved. If a particular game or setting is important, verify it on the new console before wiping the old one.
Choose how to handle storage on the new console
Xbox’s getting-started page identifies three approaches to limited space. The right choice depends on whether you already own suitable external storage, how often you rotate games and how much installed content you want available at once. The source does not establish a universal best option, a current capacity recommendation, a price or a specific model.
| Option | Best fit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall games you are not actively playing | Players who want to avoid buying or connecting extra hardware. | Reinstalling later requires another download, so broadband availability matters. |
| Connect an external hard drive | People who already have compatible external storage or want a separate library device. | Check the drive’s compatibility and the current Xbox instructions for how content on it can be used; do not assume every title behaves identically. |
| Add an Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card | Players who want additional console storage in the expansion-card category. | The exact model, capacity, price and current listing were not established here; verify compatibility and the listing before purchase. |
These choices also differ in commitment. Uninstalling costs no hardware money but uses data and time again later. An external drive may be convenient if you already own one, while a storage expansion card is a dedicated accessory purchase. No reliable current price or particular product listing is established here, so treat any advertised cost as something to verify at the time you shop.
Storage is a capacity decision, not proof that a transfer has succeeded. A game appearing in a transfer list does not by itself confirm that its saves, licenses or settings are available; sign in and test the items you care about after migration. Leave enough free space for required downloads and updates rather than filling the console immediately.
Family and account controls to configure before play
Xbox Family Settings can help parents manage a child’s console activity. Xbox Wire’s 2024 setup guidance describes controls for screen time, content restrictions, chat access, friends and spending. Configure the child’s own account and review the controls from a parent or organizer account. If a child uses an adult profile, those controls may not provide the intended separation.

That order makes it easier to confirm that restrictions apply to the correct profile and that spending permissions match your household’s rules. Have each player sign in separately so privacy and communication choices are not accidentally applied to the wrong person.

Give the console a name for easier identification
Naming is optional, but it is useful when several Xbox devices appear in your Microsoft account or when choosing a device for an app or game installation. Microsoft Support gives this path: Settings > System > Console info > Name. The relevant support page is Manage devices used with your Microsoft account.
Choose a short name that identifies the room or household member without including sensitive information. Naming does not replace signing in with the correct Xbox profile and is not itself a transfer step. If you later see several similarly named devices, renaming them can make the intended target easier to recognize.
Troubleshoot setup and migration problems
The TV shows no Xbox picture
- Confirm that the TV is set to the HDMI input used by the console.
- Check that the HDMI cable is firmly connected at both ends and try another available HDMI input if necessary.
- Restart only after checking the cable and input; if the setup screen still does not appear, consult the console’s current hardware support instructions.
Setup will not finish online
- Check that broadband internet is working on another device and re-enter the network credentials carefully.
- Do not assume the console is ready while a mandatory update is pending. Let the update complete before adding external accessories.
- If the account cannot be used, confirm that you are entering the Microsoft account intended for the Xbox profile rather than a different household account.
The migration article will not display its instructions
Open the official support URL in a current browser with JavaScript enabled. The page is a live resource, so its wording and navigation can change. If it remains unavailable, do not substitute an unverified third-party menu sequence; wait until you can read Microsoft’s current instructions or contact Xbox Support.
There is not enough room for the library
Use one of Xbox’s documented approaches: uninstall games you are not actively playing, connect an external hard drive, or investigate an Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card. Before buying a card or drive, verify the exact model and compatibility for your console and the games you plan to use. If you choose not to buy hardware, prioritize the games you want installed now and leave the rest for later downloads.
A game or setting is missing after the move
- Check that the new console is signed in with the same Microsoft account and Xbox profile used for the item on the old console.
- Confirm that the migration process reported completion and that the new console has finished any pending updates or downloads.
- Keep the old Xbox intact and consult the live migration article for the title or setting in question. The available documentation does not establish that every game, save, license, add-on or setting transfers automatically.
The wrong person’s profile was configured
Stop before deleting anything from the old console. Sign out, identify the Microsoft account associated with the intended Xbox profile, and use the current Xbox setup or migration guidance to correct the configuration. Do not assume that renaming a console or adding another user changes ownership of purchases or gameplay information.

How do I transfer games from Xbox One to Xbox Series X?
Use Microsoft’s live Move from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S support article. It provides the current workflow, prerequisites and limits; menu labels and supported choices can change with console software.
Do my Xbox settings transfer to a new console?
Your Microsoft account and Xbox profile are tied to online setup and to retaining gameplay settings and information, according to the Xbox Series X|S product guide. Do not assume that every setting, save, license, add-on or game version transfers in every case; verify important items on the new console before resetting the old one.
Do I need a storage expansion card to move my games?
No requirement for a card is established. Xbox lists three ways to manage space: uninstall games you are not playing, connect an external hard drive, or add an Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card. Choose based on your available storage, library size and whether you want to buy hardware.
Should I reset my Xbox One after the transfer starts?
No. Keep the old console available until the new Xbox is updated, signed in and checked. Confirm the games and settings you care about before erasing, selling or resetting the old device.
How can I set parental controls on the new Xbox?
Use Xbox Family Settings and apply controls to the child’s own account. Xbox Wire describes screen-time, content, chat, friends and spending controls. Configure them after the correct accounts are signed in and before handing the console to a child.
Can I name my Xbox so I can identify it later?
Yes. Microsoft Support gives the path Settings > System > Console info > Name. Naming helps distinguish devices when more than one Xbox appears in your Microsoft account, but it does not transfer games or settings.
The Bottom Line
Connect the Xbox to an HDMI TV and broadband, sign in with the correct Microsoft account, finish setup and the update, then follow Microsoft’s current Xbox One-to-Series X|S migration guide. Keep the old console until important games and settings are verified, and choose storage based on your space needs rather than assuming an expansion card is required.
