The reliable way to host RLCraft is to install the dedicated RLCraft Server Pack 1.12.2 Release v2.9.3, run it with Java 8 and the matching Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge stack, accept the EULA, allocate memory in a start script, and configure server.properties. Every player must install the same RLCraft release as the server. Do not use the normal client pack on the server: its client-only mods can prevent the server from starting.
What you need before installing
RLCraft 2.9.3 is a Minecraft 1.12.2 modpack release. CurseForge lists both the regular release and a separate file named RLCraft Server Pack 1.12.2 – Release v2.9.3.zip. The server-pack file is the one intended for a dedicated server. A client installation contains rendering, input and other client-only mods that a headless server cannot load.
- A computer or host with a stable network connection and enough free disk space for the pack, generated world, logs and backups.
- A 64-bit operating system and a 64-bit Java installation.
- Java 8. Guides for this 1.12.2/old-Forge stack consistently specify Java 8; Java 17 and Java 21 generally fail with this combination. If another Minecraft instance on the machine needs a newer Java release, point the RLCraft start script to the Java 8 executable explicitly.
- The RLCraft 1.12.2 server pack, not the client pack.
- A free folder dedicated to this server. Do not install into a folder containing another Forge server or another modpack.
Java compatibility is based on the pack and hosting guides rather than a current Forge support statement, so check the server-pack README or its file description if the release changes. The instructions below target release 2.9.3.
How much RAM does an RLCraft server need?
There is no publisher-tested memory specification for RLCraft. Published guides disagree: estimates include about 4 GB for one to three players, 6 GB for five to ten players, 6–8 GB, 8–10 GB for five to ten players, and as much as 10–12 GB. Treat these as starting points, not guarantees. Chunk generation, view distance, world size, concurrent players and other applications on the machine can change the result.

Use the server’s tick rate and memory graph as the decision criteria. A server can have free heap and still lag because the CPU is generating structures or entities. Conversely, an undersized heap produces out-of-memory errors or repeated garbage collection. Change one setting at a time and record the effect.
Download the correct RLCraft server pack
Choose the dedicated server file
- Open the RLCraft 1.12.2 project page on CurseForge.
- Select the files/releases view and locate RLCraft Server Pack 1.12.2 – Release v2.9.3.zip.
- Use the file menu’s server-pack download option and save the ZIP locally.
- Keep the filename and release number visible. You will use the same number when instructing players which client pack to install.
Do not download the ordinary client ZIP and rename it. Renaming does not remove client-only mods and commonly produces a “server tried to load client-only class” or similar startup failure.

1. Create an empty server directory
For example, create C:MinecraftRLCraft293 on Windows or /opt/rlcraft293 on Linux. Give the account that will run Minecraft read, write and execute access to this directory. Avoid a path with unusual shell characters until the server is working.
2. Run the Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge installer
- Download the Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge installer that is appropriate for the pack.
- Run the installer in the empty server directory.
- Select Install server, choose the directory you created, and allow the installer to download its libraries.
- Let the installer finish before copying any modpack files.
The exact Forge build bundled or recommended for RLCraft 2.9.3 is not clearly established in the available release material. Some setup guides recommend Forge 14.23.5.2860 or newer, but that recommendation should not override the server-pack README or the release’s own instructions. Use the build specified by the pack when one is supplied; otherwise keep the Forge 1.12.2 build consistent between the installer and the pack’s included files.
3. Extract the server pack
- Open the downloaded server-pack ZIP.
- Extract all of its contents into the Forge server directory.
- When the extractor asks whether to replace files, choose the option to overwrite.
- Keep the resulting
mods,config, scripts and libraries in the same directory as the Forge server files. Do not leave them one level deeper in a duplicate folder.
A correct layout has the server JAR, the mods and config directories, and eula.txt in the server’s top-level directory. If you see RLCraft293/RLCraft293/mods, move the inner contents up one level.
Accept the EULA and make the first start
- Run the Forge server once using the supplied script or the server JAR. It will stop and create
eula.txtif the file does not already exist. - Open
eula.txtand changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly after reading and accepting Minecraft’s EULA. - Start the server again and wait for a console message indicating that the server has finished loading. The first launch can take substantially longer while Forge and the modpack create configuration files.
- Stop it cleanly by entering
stopin the server console. Do not kill the process during the first world save.
The first successful run creates server.properties, world data, logs and additional configuration files. Stop the process before changing those files so that the server does not overwrite your edits.

Create a Java 8 start script
Windows: start.bat
Save a file named start.bat in the server directory. Replace the Java path with the actual location of your 64-bit Java 8 installation and adjust the heap to the amount you selected:

pauseThe wildcard in a command is not accepted by every Windows Java launch configuration. If it fails, replace it with the exact Forge server JAR filename created by your installer. If the pack supplies a launch script, use its server-JAR argument and only change the Java path and memory values.
Linux or macOS: start.sh
Create a shell script in the server directory:

/usr/lib/jvm/temurin-8-jre/bin/java -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar forge-1.12.2-*.jar noguiMake it executable with chmod +x start.sh, then run ./start.sh. As on Windows, use the exact JAR filename if shell expansion does not select the intended file.
Choose -Xms and -Xmx deliberately
-Xmsis the initial heap. Setting it near the expected working size can reduce resizing, but it immediately reserves that memory.-Xmxis the maximum heap and must leave headroom for the operating system, Forge, native libraries and other services.- Never assign the machine’s entire RAM to Java. A host with 8 GB total cannot safely give an RLCraft process an 8 GB maximum.
- When several Java versions are installed, the absolute path in the script prevents the server from accidentally running on Java 17 or 21.
Confirm the selected runtime with java -version (or the full path to Java followed by -version). The output should identify Java 8 before you troubleshoot mod loading.
Configure server.properties
Open server.properties only while the server is stopped. The following settings are useful starting points; they are guide suggestions, not official RLCraft defaults:

Change one group of related settings, restart, and observe the result. Keep a copy of the original file so an invalid value can be restored quickly.

Generate terrain before inviting players
RLCraft’s custom structures and terrain can be CPU-intensive when new chunks are created. Pre-generating an area around the planned base reduces the chance that several players exploring in different directions will stall the main server thread at once.
- Start with the final configuration and mod list.
- Use a compatible world pre-generation method approved for your pack and test it on a backup or disposable world first.
- Generate only the radius you can store and maintain. A very large radius consumes disk space and may run for hours.
- Watch CPU load, tick time and disk activity. Pause the job if the operating system becomes unresponsive.
- Back up the completed world before opening it to players.
Command blocks are a separate setting from pre-generation. If a structure guide says they are required, enable them before generating that region; changing the setting afterward cannot retroactively fix chunks that were already created without the required behavior.

Connect players without a version mismatch
Every player must install the RLCraft client pack for exactly the server’s release: 1.12.2 Release v2.9.3 in this setup. A different RLCraft release, a manually altered mod list or a different Forge environment can cause a login error even when the server address is correct.
- Give players the exact release name and ask them to install it through their normal modpack launcher.
- Tell them to remove or disable a second RLCraft instance that might be selected accidentally.
- In Minecraft, open Multiplayer, choose Add Server, enter the server address and port, and save.
- Have one player test the connection before distributing the address widely.
For a home server, the address may be a local IP for people on the same network; remote players need the reachable address and any required router port-forwarding. Keep network exposure separate from the modpack installation: a correct pack cannot compensate for a blocked port or an unsafe firewall rule.
Essential administration after launch
Whitelist and operator access
Run these commands in the server console without a leading slash:
whitelist on
whitelist add PlayerName
op TrustedAdmin
list
Use the smallest practical operator group. An operator can execute commands that affect the entire world, so do not grant it merely to make ordinary gameplay convenient. Remove access with deop PlayerName and remove a player with whitelist remove PlayerName.

Backups
- Stop the server cleanly before making a full copy of the world and configuration directories.
- Keep several dated backups on storage separate from the live server.
- Test restoring a copy. A backup that has never been restored is not a proven recovery plan.
- Back up before Forge, modpack, configuration or Java changes, not only on a calendar schedule.
Logs and routine maintenance
Check the console and the logs directory after every update. Keep the first error and its stack trace rather than relying on the final “server stopped” line. Record the pack release, Forge build, Java path, heap settings and configuration changes in a small text file so a later administrator can reproduce the installation.
Optional hosted installation
Some managed hosts provide a one-click installer. Pine Hosting documents this workflow: open its control panel, choose CurseForge in the Modpack tab, find RLCraft, and click Install. Confirm that the panel installs release 2.9.3, uses a compatible Java runtime, exposes the correct console and provides backups before allowing players to join. A one-click button does not remove the need to match client versions or monitor memory and tick performance.

The process exits immediately or reports an unsupported class version
- Run
java -versionand verify Java 8. Point the script to the Java 8 binary instead of relying on the system default. - Check that the Forge server JAR is for Minecraft 1.12.2 and that the installer completed its library downloads.
- Read the first exception in the log. A later cascade often hides the original cause.
“Client-only” or rendering-class errors
Replace the contents with the dedicated server pack. The normal client pack includes mods that require a graphics client and cannot run in a dedicated server process. Do not attempt to fix this by deleting random mods; use the server-pack file and extract it over the matching Forge installation.
The server says a mod is missing or the login is rejected
Compare the server’s release number and mod directory with the player’s client. Both sides must use the same RLCraft version, Minecraft version and compatible Forge setup. A mismatch can present as a generic registry, channel or “failed to synchronize” error.

- Check whether the Java process reaches
-Xmx. If it does, increase the maximum only when the machine has unused RAM. - Reduce
view-distance, limit simultaneous exploration and pre-generate a smaller area. - Look for a runaway entity, chunk or mod error in the log rather than assuming more RAM will solve a CPU-bound tick.
- Leave operating-system headroom and avoid running a desktop, backup job or other game server in the same memory budget.
World generation freezes or takes an unusually long time
Wait for the first generation pass while watching CPU and disk activity. If the process repeatedly stops at the same point, restore the last known-good backup, confirm command-block and pack settings, and test the suspect region in a copy. Do not delete world files from the live server while it is running.
Players cannot reach the server
- Test locally first, then from a second machine on the same network.
- Allow the Java process through the host firewall and confirm that the configured port is forwarded if remote players are outside the LAN.
- Verify that the address players entered is the current address and that the server console is listening on the expected port.
- Do not publish an administrative console or remote-management interface to the internet without authentication and access controls.
What changed in RLCraft 2.9.3?
Release 2.9.3 is described as a minor update for Minecraft 1.12.2. TickProfiler, a debugging tool with no gameplay effect, was removed. CarryOn, ShieldBreak and RLMixins were updated. The changelog also lists gameplay and exploit fixes: Atomic Deconstructor behavior on bosses, Stonelings can no longer be picked up through CarryOn, Parasite Armor reduces Fear and Viral effects to level 1, and several duplication exploits were addressed.

Those changes are another reason not to mix files from different releases. A player on an older pack can have different mod registries and behavior even if both installations are labelled “RLCraft 1.12.2.”
Pre-launch checklist
- Dedicated RLCraft Server Pack 1.12.2 Release v2.9.3 is extracted, not the client pack.
- Forge 1.12.2 is installed in the same top-level directory and matches the pack’s instructions.
- Java 8 is confirmed and selected by the start script.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run the RLCraft client pack as a dedicated server?
No. Use the separate RLCraft Server Pack 1.12.2 Release v2.9.3. The client pack includes client-only mods that can stop a dedicated server during startup.

Guides for the Minecraft 1.12.2 and older-Forge combination specify Java 8 and report that Java 17 or 21 does not work reliably. Select Java 8 explicitly in the start script and verify the pack’s current README if a later release changes the requirement.
Why can a player join another Minecraft server but not my RLCraft server?
RLCraft requires the same pack release, Minecraft version, Forge environment and compatible mod registry on both sides. Install the exact client release used by the server, then check the server log for the first registry or channel-mismatch error.
Should I set the watchdog value to -1 permanently?
Usually not. Some setup guides suggest max-tick-time=-1 while diagnosing long ticks, but disabling the watchdog removes an automatic protection against a hung server. Use it only when you understand the recovery implications and monitor the process closely.
