To connect a third-party learning tool to Schoology, first confirm whether it uses LTI 1.0/1.1 or LTI 1.3. Schoology’s legacy External Tools setup covers LTI 1.0/1.1; LTI 1.3 apps are installed through App Center. The right workflow also depends on who is configuring it: a system administrator can manage a district-wide provider, a course administrator can add a legacy provider to a course, and an instructor can add an already configured tool as course material.

Choose the LTI version and installation route

Ask the tool provider which LTI version its Schoology integration supports. Schoology’s administrator instructions describe External Tool Providers for LTI 1.0/1.1 and direct administrators to App Center for LTI 1.3 apps. The developer documentation says Schoology still supports LTI 1.1 but recommends LTI 1.3 for new app development. System Management of External Tools · App Center · Schoology LTI Apps

Integration type Schoology route Credential approach
LTI 1.0/1.1 External Tool Provider, configured at system or course level The provider may require a Consumer Key and Shared Secret
LTI 1.3 Follow the app’s Schoology App Center installation instructions Does not use the legacy Consumer Key and Shared Secret workflow

Do not assume an integration is compatible just because a vendor advertises LTI support. Schoology says it cannot automatically verify publisher compatibility; check the 1EdTech/IMS conformance certification information or contact the publisher directly.

Get the provider’s configuration and privacy details

For an LTI 1.0/1.1 tool, obtain exact values from the vendor before opening Schoology’s configuration form. Requirements vary by provider and institution, so do not reuse credentials or sample values from another installation.

Configure an LTI 1.0/1.1 tool at the right scope

System or district-level setup

A system administrator can centralize the provider’s configuration and credentials so the integration can be managed and distributed centrally. PowerSchool recommends district-level installation when centralized control and distribution are appropriate.

Install an LTI 1.3 app through App Center

For LTI 1.3, use the particular app’s Schoology App Center installation flow and its provider documentation; do not try to substitute the legacy Consumer Key and Shared Secret form. Follow the app’s steps for administrator permissions, organization installation, and any provider-side setup. Schoology’s overview is App Center.

Example: Google Drive

Schoology documents Google Drive as an LTI 1.3 App Center app. The integration can access Drive content from Schoology resources, add Drive content to course materials and activities, and support student submissions connected to Drive. Its documented installation is an administrator App Center flow and requires appropriate Google Workspace education administrator permissions for organization installation. See the Google Drive app administrator guide.

Example: Turnitin

Schoology’s Turnitin instructions describe a provider-specific legacy LTI setup that requires an institutional Turnitin license and credentials supplied by Turnitin. The guide distinguishes configuration URLs for the US and UK and says a unique URL is required for each building. Those details apply to that documented Turnitin integration, not to LTI tools generally. See Turnitin LTI tool.

Add a configured tool to course materials

Once an administrator or course administrator has configured the provider, an instructor can add the tool as material in a course. Schoology documents the path Add Materials → Add File/Link/External Tool → External Tool; materials can also be added from Resources. Follow the provider’s directions for selecting content or launching the tool. For supported materials, grading can be enabled. The steps are in External tools: add and grade.

Understand the grading and notification limitation

When external-tool materials are enabled for grading, Schoology does not automatically detect submissions from the tool. It also does not send its usual submission notifications, grading reminders, or overdue notifications for these materials. Establish a separate process with instructors and the provider for checking work and communicating deadlines.

For developers building a Schoology LTI app

Schoology’s developer documentation recommends LTI 1.3 for new app development while noting that LTI 1.1 remains supported. It describes OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect requirements and identifies placement-specific behavior: some placements require LTI Deep Linking; Course Materials supports LTI Launch Links with lineitem data and HTML links, while Rich Text Editor placement supports launch links without lineitem data. Schoology reviews placement suitability as part of its app approval process. Check the live LTI Apps developer documentation for current implementation requirements.

Compare integrations before deployment

When selecting between providers, compare operational requirements rather than the LTI label alone.

  • Protocol and install route: LTI 1.0/1.1 uses the External Tool workflow; LTI 1.3 uses the App Center route.
  • Administrative scope: Decide whether central system-level management or course-level configuration is appropriate, and whether credentials or URLs differ by building.
  • Privacy and data exchange: Verify the launch data and custom parameters the vendor requires, then apply institutional privacy expectations.
  • Course workflow: Confirm where the tool can place content, whether Deep Linking or grading is supported, and how instructors will track submissions.
  • Entitlement and support: Check whether an institutional license is required and who supplies configuration credentials and troubleshooting help.
