Short answer: an IPv6 OpenVPN deployment has two separate jobs. First, the OpenVPN control and data connection must reach the server over IPv6, which uses matching proto udp6 settings. Second, clients need an IPv6 network inside the tunnel, a route to that network, IPv6 forwarding, firewall permissions, and either an upstream route or a deliberate NAT design for Internet access. A server that merely listens on an IPv6 address does not automatically give connected clients IPv6 connectivity.

The procedure below uses Ubuntu’s templated systemd service, a routed TUN tunnel, and a separate IPv6 prefix for VPN clients. Replace every documentation prefix such as 2001:db8::/64 with the real block routed to your host.

Understand the two IPv6 decisions before changing configuration

IPv6 transport and IPv6 carried through the tunnel are independent. You can run an OpenVPN listener that accepts connections over IPv6 while still carrying only IPv4 inside the tunnel. Conversely, a tunnel reached over IPv4 can carry IPv6 client traffic. Supporting IPv6 inside the tunnel has been part of OpenVPN since the 2.3.0 release; using IPv6 as the transport is an additional choice.

Decision What it controls Typical setting
Transport How the client reaches the OpenVPN server proto udp6 for IPv6-only UDP transport; udp4 for IPv4
Tunnel addressing Which addresses are assigned to the TUN interface and clients A distinct routed IPv6 prefix, commonly a /64 for the VPN subnet
Traffic policy Which client destinations enter the tunnel Selected route-ipv6 routes (split tunnel) or the IPv6 default/unicast routes (full tunnel)
Internet egress How remote networks return traffic to VPN clients Provider routing of the VPN prefix, or IPv6 SNAT/masquerade where that is appropriate

Keep these choices separate while troubleshooting. A successful IPv6 connection to the server proves transport only; it does not prove that the client has a usable IPv6 route to the Internet.

Prerequisites and address planning

Ubuntu host requirements

  • A supported Ubuntu installation with OpenVPN available from the distribution repositories.
  • A working global IPv6 address on the host and a functioning default IPv6 route. Confirm this before installing OpenVPN.
  • An IPv6 block routed to the host by your ISP or hosting provider. The OpenVPN community guidance recommends a separate routed network and commonly uses a /64 for the VPN subnet.
  • An upstream firewall or security group that can pass the chosen UDP port to the Ubuntu machine.
  • IPv6-capable client networks and operating systems. A client on an IPv4-only network cannot reach an IPv6-only transport endpoint unless it has another path.

Do not reuse the host’s on-link LAN prefix

For a routed design, the VPN pool must be a distinct routed range that reaches the Ubuntu host. Reusing the address prefix that is directly on the host’s LAN is not the routed design described by the OpenVPN community guidance and commonly creates neighbor-discovery and return-route failures.

Choose split tunnel or full tunnel

With split tunneling, push only the IPv6 networks that should use the VPN. This preserves the client’s ordinary IPv6 path for everything else. With a full tunnel, push routes for all IPv6 unicast traffic so the client uses the VPN as its default IPv6 path. Full tunneling requires a working egress design: the provider must route the client prefix back to the VPN host, or the host must perform IPv6 SNAT where that is an intentional part of the network architecture.

Documentation prefixes are not usable addresses

The range 2001:db8::/32 is reserved for documentation. Examples below use a /64 carved from that space only to show syntax. Substitute the real provider-routed prefix everywhere before starting the service.

Install OpenVPN and create the PKI

Install the packages

Update Ubuntu’s package index and install the OpenVPN package and Easy-RSA tooling:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install openvpn easy-rsa

Use Easy-RSA to create a certificate authority, issue one server certificate, and issue a separate client certificate and private key for every device. Keep private keys out of email and public storage. Revoking one client’s certificate is much easier when every device has its own identity.

Create the TLS protection key

Generate the static key used by tls-crypt:

sudo openvpn --genkey secret ta.key

Place the CA certificate, server certificate, server private key, Diffie-Hellman material, and ta.key in the locations referenced by the server configuration. Each client needs its copy of ca.crt, its issued client certificate, its client private key, and ta.key.

tls-crypt was introduced in OpenVPN 2.4. On systems older than Ubuntu 18.04, use the older tls-auth form and matching configuration on both ends instead. Do not mix the two protection methods between a client and server.

Create the routed IPv6 server configuration

Use the Ubuntu service naming convention

Create a file such as /etc/openvpn/server.conf. Ubuntu starts a named configuration through the templated unit openvpn@CONFIGFILENAME; a file named server.conf therefore maps to openvpn@server.

Minimal configuration pattern

Start from the sample configuration installed with your OpenVPN version and adapt paths and directives to that version. The following illustrates the IPv6-specific pieces of a routed TUN setup:

port 1194
proto udp6
dev tun

ca /etc/openvpn/ca.crt
cert /etc/openvpn/server.crt
key /etc/openvpn/server.key
dh /etc/openvpn/dh.pem
tls-crypt /etc/openvpn/ta.key

server-ipv6 2001:db8:1234:10::/64

# Split-tunnel example: replace with networks your clients need
push "route-ipv6 2001:db8:abcd::/48"

# For a full-tunnel policy, push the IPv6 default/unicast routes
# required by your OpenVPN version and client policy instead.

proto udp6 makes the OpenVPN UDP transport IPv6-only in current OpenVPN releases, including 2.6. The client must use a matching protocol setting. If you need clients on both IPv4 and IPv6 networks, provide an appropriate additional listener or use a transport choice that matches that requirement; do not assume one IPv6-only socket will accept IPv4.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assign a real routed pool

server-ipv6 represents the address pool assigned inside the tunnel. Use the separate prefix your provider routes to this host, not the host’s on-link subnet. The exact IPv6 server and route directives available can vary with the installed OpenVPN release, so check the local sample configuration and manual when adapting the example.

Push only the routes you intend to use

The route-ipv6 directive defines an IPv6 route through the tunnel. Push selected routes for split tunneling, or the full IPv6 policy for a full tunnel. A client using the normal client directive accepts pushed routes unless it is configured with route-nopull; that option requires you to add routes manually on the client.

Enable kernel forwarding

The Ubuntu host must route packets between the TUN interface and its IPv6 uplink. Create a persistent sysctl drop-in, enable both protocol families when the host also serves IPv4 VPN traffic, and reload it:

echo "net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1" | sudo tee /etc/sysctl.d/50-enable-ipv4-forwarding.conf
sudo sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.d/50-enable-ipv4-forwarding.conf

echo "net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding = 1" | sudo tee /etc/sysctl.d/51-enable-ipv6-forwarding.conf
sudo sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.d/51-enable-ipv6-forwarding.conf

Check the effective values after reloading. IPv6 forwarding is independent of whether the OpenVPN process itself is listening on IPv6; it is required for routed client packets to leave the tunnel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Permit the traffic in every firewall layer

Allow the OpenVPN listener

Permit the selected UDP port, commonly 1194, in Ubuntu’s host firewall and in any provider security group or upstream firewall. If the listener uses IPv6 transport, the rule must apply to IPv6 traffic and the server’s global IPv6 address.

Allow forwarding, not just local input

Once a client connects, its packets traverse the host as forwarded traffic. Permit forwarding from the TUN interface to the IPv6 uplink and allow established return traffic. The exact rule depends on whether the system uses UFW, nftables, or another firewall, and on the actual interface names. Inspect the active policy rather than copying a rule written for a different host.

  • Identify the TUN interface created by OpenVPN and the physical or virtual interface carrying the default IPv6 route.
  • Allow traffic from the VPN prefix toward the intended IPv6 destinations.
  • Allow return traffic back to the VPN prefix.
  • Keep unrelated forwarding blocked if that is your security policy.

A rule that permits UDP 1194 but denies forwarding will produce a client that authenticates successfully and then has no usable IPv6 traffic.

Choose routed public IPv6 or NAT

Provider-routed public prefix

With a public prefix routed to the Ubuntu host, each VPN client can use a globally routable address. The provider’s network must have a route for that prefix pointing at the host. This is the cleanest routed model, but the upstream route is a prerequisite; assigning addresses in OpenVPN alone does not create it.

Private or unique-local pool with SNAT

A private or unique-local IPv6 pool can be translated to an address on the host’s uplink. This avoids requiring the upstream network to route the internal pool, but it introduces stateful NAT and makes inbound connections to individual VPN clients unsuitable unless additional mappings are designed. Use an IPv6 SNAT or masquerade rule only when it matches your provider and firewall capabilities, and bind it to the correct egress interface.

OpenVPN Access Server documentation distinguishes public routed pools, local pools with SNAT, and NAT-disabled routing. Its management settings and configuration keys are not interchangeable with a community OpenVPN server file, so follow the documentation for the edition you installed.

Start and enable the Ubuntu service

After checking the configuration paths and permissions, start the named unit:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo systemctl start openvpn@server
sudo systemctl enable openvpn@server
sudo systemctl status openvpn@server

The generic openvpn unit does not select server.conf for you. If your file has another name, replace server in the unit name with that configuration’s filename stem.

When the service fails, read the complete journal before changing settings:

sudo journalctl -u openvpn@server --no-pager

Build the client profile

Install an OpenVPN client on the device, then transfer its CA certificate, client certificate, private key, and ta.key securely. The profile must match the server’s port and transport:

Leave route pulling enabled when the server is pushing routes. If you intentionally use route-nopull, add the required IPv6 routes locally and understand that server-side full-tunnel changes will not reach that client automatically.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Verify the deployment in layers

1. Confirm service and certificate negotiation

On the server, inspect journalctl -u openvpn@server. On the client, look for successful certificate verification and the message Initialization Sequence Completed. Errors here indicate transport, certificate, key, or protocol mismatches rather than an Internet routing problem.

2. Inspect the tunnel interface

With the client connected, inspect addresses and routes:

ip addr
ip -6 route

You should see the TUN interface with an address from the VPN IPv6 pool and routes corresponding to the pushed policy. If no IPv6 address appears, concentrate on the server’s IPv6 pool directive and client negotiation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Test the VPN gateway

Ping or otherwise reach the server-side tunnel address from the client. This isolates tunnel addressing from forwarding and upstream routing. A gateway failure means the problem is inside the tunnel or on the host firewall.

4. Test an external IPv6 destination

Open an IPv6 test endpoint or public-address service from the connected client and confirm the resulting public IPv6 address. A full-tunnel client should show the server’s routed or translated egress address; a split-tunnel client should use the VPN only for destinations covered by pushed routes.

Troubleshoot a connection with no IPv6 Internet

The client connects but receives no IPv6 address

  • Confirm the server configuration contains a valid IPv6 pool directive supported by the installed release.
  • Check that the client profile is using dev tun and the expected certificate and key.
  • Review the client log for rejected or missing pushed options.

The client has an address but cannot reach the tunnel gateway

  • Verify IPv6 forwarding is enabled in the running kernel.
  • Inspect host firewall input and forwarding policy for the TUN interface.
  • Check that the pool does not overlap the host’s on-link LAN prefix.

The gateway works but external IPv6 destinations fail

  • Inspect ip -6 route on the client to confirm that the intended split or full-tunnel route was installed.
  • Confirm the Ubuntu host has a default IPv6 route and that forwarding rules permit the TUN-to-uplink path.
  • For a public pool, ask the provider to verify that the VPN prefix is routed back to the host.
  • For NAT, verify that the SNAT or masquerade rule uses the correct egress interface and source prefix.

The server log is quiet and clients time out

  • Check the server’s global IPv6 address and default route from the host itself.
  • Allow the OpenVPN UDP port in both the Ubuntu firewall and any upstream security group.
  • Confirm that the client network can reach IPv6-only UDP transport; an IPv4-only access network cannot do so without another gateway.

Routes appear, but traffic follows the old path

Check for route-nopull, client-side policy routing, or a more-specific route that wins over the pushed route. In a full-tunnel design, confirm that the default/unicast IPv6 routes were actually pushed and accepted rather than assuming that a successful handshake changed the client’s default path.

Compare the practical design options

Choice Advantages Costs and failure points
IPv4 transport (udp4) Works from IPv4-only access networks and can still carry IPv6 inside the tunnel. The client must have IPv4 reachability to the server; it does not test IPv6 transport.
IPv6 transport (udp6) Uses an end-to-end IPv6 path to the OpenVPN listener. Every connecting network needs IPv6 reachability; current OpenVPN 2.6 treats udp6 as IPv6-only.
Provider-routed public pool Clients receive globally routable addresses without translation. Requires a distinct prefix and a correct upstream route back to the Ubuntu host.
Private or unique-local pool plus SNAT Can work when the provider will not route an extra public prefix. Needs stateful NAT and is less suitable for unsolicited inbound connections to clients.
Split tunnel Only selected IPv6 networks use the VPN; ordinary client routing remains unchanged. Every required destination must be included in the pushed route policy.
Full tunnel All intended IPv6 unicast traffic exits through the VPN policy. Needs complete route pushing, forwarding, and a working routed or NAT egress design.
Routed TUN The normal IPv6 approach described by the OpenVPN community guidance; efficient layer-3 routing. Requires deliberate address and route planning.
Bridged TAP Extends a layer-2 segment in designs that specifically require bridging. Not generally recommended for the community IPv6 routed approach and adds layer-2 complexity.

Community OpenVPN and Access Server are different configuration targets

A community OpenVPN installation is normally configured with a server file and the templated Ubuntu unit described above. Access Server adds a management layer and its own IPv6 configuration keys and workflows. Concepts such as a routed public pool, a local pool with SNAT, and NAT-disabled routing still apply, but commands and setting names from one edition should not be pasted into the other.

Operational checks after the first successful connection

  • Record the real VPN prefix, transport port, TUN interface, and egress interface so firewall changes remain reviewable.
  • Back up the CA and server configuration separately from client private keys.
  • Issue one client certificate per device and revoke credentials that are lost or retired.
  • Review the OpenVPN and Ubuntu package versions before changing directives; syntax and defaults can differ across releases.
  • Periodically test both a tunnel-gateway address and an external IPv6 destination. A handshake can remain healthy while an upstream route or firewall rule has changed.

Final checklist

  1. The Ubuntu host has a global IPv6 address, a default route, and a provider-routed block distinct from its on-link LAN prefix.
  2. The server and client agree on transport, port, certificates, and tls-crypt or the older tls-auth method appropriate to their versions.
  3. The server assigns the separate IPv6 pool and pushes the intended split- or full-tunnel routes.
  4. net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding is enabled persistently.
  5. The OpenVPN UDP port is allowed by every firewall in front of the host.
  6. Forwarding from TUN to the IPv6 uplink and return traffic is permitted.
  7. The provider routes the pool back to the host, or the selected SNAT design is active on the correct egress interface.
  8. The service runs as openvpn@server (for server.conf) and its journal is clean.
  9. The client shows the expected TUN address and IPv6 routes, reaches the tunnel gateway, and passes an external IPv6 test.
