Start with a trusted internet connection and your Apple Account details, choose whether to transfer existing data or start fresh, then secure the device with a passcode or password, two-factor authentication, Find My, and current software. These built-in protections are the essentials; paid security software is not required for this setup.
Before you turn on your new iPad or MacBook
Use a trusted Wi-Fi network and have its password and your Apple Account credentials ready. If you plan to migrate data, make sure the old device or backup is available. A device managed by a school or employer may have required enrollment steps or settings; follow the organization’s instructions or ask its administrator.
Choose transfer or a clean start
Transfer is convenient when you want to bring over existing data, settings, and preferences. Starting fresh takes more manual setup but lets you choose what to install and configure. Neither choice is automatically more secure; the right one depends on what you need to keep.

For Mac setup using an iPhone or iPad, Apple lists macOS Sequoia 15.4 and iOS or iPadOS 18.4 as minimum versions, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on. Requirements may change, so check Apple’s current guidance for your devices.

What should you do first when setting up a new MacBook?
Connect it to the internet and follow Setup Assistant. Some setup steps may require a connection, and an update may be required during first setup. If you are transferring data, have the chosen source ready before you begin.
Create a strong Mac login password
Set a unique password for your local Mac user account. Choose one that is strong but practical to enter. macOS uses FileVault for volume encryption; on Apple silicon Macs, Data Protection also protects data. A stronger login credential strengthens the protection of the encryption keys.

How do you set up a new iPad securely?
Follow Setup Assistant and choose the transfer or manual setup route that matches your plan. Create a strong passcode, preferably one long enough to resist guessing but still practical to enter. On iPad, setting a passcode automatically enables Data Protection, which helps protect the device’s data.
Use biometric sign-in when available
Enable Face ID or Touch ID if your model supports it. Biometrics make routine unlocking more convenient, but they do not replace the passcode or password that backs them up. Availability depends on the iPad or MacBook model.

Which Apple Account and sign-in settings should you check?
Sign in with the personal Apple Account intended for this device. Family members should use their own accounts rather than sharing one; Family Sharing is Apple’s option for sharing eligible purchases and services. If someone else helped create or configure your account, change its password so only you know it.

Confirm two-factor authentication
- Open Settings on iPad or System Settings on Mac.
- Select your name, then open Sign-In & Security.
- Check that two-factor authentication is enabled. Apple says most accounts already use it.
When you sign in on a new device, Apple uses your account password and a six-digit verification code. Never share the code, your password, device passcode, or recovery key. Apple states: “Never give your Apple Account password, verification codes, device passcode, recovery key or any account security details to anyone else. Apple will never ask you for this information.”
Review recovery contacts and other account recovery settings, and keep contact information current. A recovery key is an additional recovery route, but you are responsible for storing it and retaining access to it; enable it only if you understand that responsibility.

Turn on Find My for the new device and leave it enabled. Find My automatically enables Activation Lock on iPad and on Macs with Apple silicon or the T2 Security Chip running macOS Catalina or later. Activation Lock can help deter someone else from reactivating a supported lost device.
If the device goes missing, use Lost Mode promptly. Apple’s Activation Lock guide explains how Find My and Activation Lock work across supported devices.

Install updates and avoid common account traps
After setup, check for available iPadOS or macOS updates and install them. Consider enabling automatic updates if they suit your workflow. Apple says software releases include bug fixes and critical security updates.
- Do not respond to unsolicited support calls by giving out account credentials or verification codes.
- Be cautious of setup prompts or links asking for your password, code, or recovery key.
- Use account security details only in legitimate Apple sign-in and settings flows; never disclose them to another person.

Are physical security keys necessary?
No. Apple’s built-in two-factor authentication is the appropriate starting point for most people. Physical FIDO-certified security keys are an optional advanced layer for people facing targeted phishing or account-takeover risks. Apple requires at least two compatible keys for Apple Account Security Keys, and advises keeping them safe and maintaining access to them. Check current compatibility, certification, and availability before buying; Apple does not endorse a particular third-party key.
