To set up an iPad mini, charge it, turn it on with the top button, connect to Wi‑Fi (or activate cellular service on a supported Wi‑Fi + Cellular model), and follow the setup assistant. When prompted, choose the data path that matches your situation: Quick Start from an iPhone or iPad, From Android, an iCloud or computer backup, or Set Up Without Another Device. Then sign in with your Apple Account, create a passcode, configure available security and accessibility features, and complete the final update and service choices. The exact screens can differ by iPad mini generation, iPadOS version, region, carrier, and account settings.
Prepare before turning on the iPad mini
A few minutes of preparation prevents most interruptions during setup. Put the iPad mini near the devices or backup you intend to use, and make sure you can sign in when the assistant asks.
Have these items ready
- A reliable Wi‑Fi network and its password. Setup requires an internet connection. A Wi‑Fi + Cellular iPad may also use cellular data after service is activated.
- Your Apple Account email address or phone number and password. This account provides access to services such as iCloud and the App Store. If you use two-factor authentication, keep a trusted device or phone number available for the verification code.
- Your previous iPhone or iPad, if you plan to use Quick Start. The current device should be connected to Wi‑Fi, have Bluetooth enabled, and be running a compatible version of iOS or iPadOS. Apple’s general setup guidance identifies iOS 11 or later and iPadOS 13 or later for automatic setup with a new device.
- Your Android phone, if you are moving from Android. Keep it charged and ready to install or open Apple’s Move to iOS app.
- A current iCloud or computer backup, if you will restore one. Know which backup is the right one and have any computer, cable, or password required to access it.
- Carrier information for a cellular model. If you want mobile data, have the carrier account or activation details available. eSIM and nano‑SIM support depends on the particular iPad mini model and carrier.
Payment information is optional. You need it during setup only if you choose to add a card to Apple Pay at that point. You can skip that step and add payment information later.

Choose the right transfer method
The transfer choice determines how long the old device remains occupied, whether setup must be restarted to change your mind, and when you can begin using the new iPad mini.

| Option | Source | When it appears | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick Start | Compatible iPhone or iPad | During initial setup when the current device is nearby | Guided device-to-device setup. A direct transfer waits until the copy finishes; an iCloud download lets you start using the iPad while apps and data continue downloading. |
| From Android | Android phone or tablet | On the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen during first-time setup | Move to iOS guides the migration. The option is tied to the initial setup flow; using it later requires erasing the iPad and starting again. |
| Restore from iCloud | iCloud backup | When the assistant asks how to transfer apps and data | Choose a backup by date and size, then leave the iPad connected while content downloads. |
| Restore from a computer | Finder or another supported computer backup | When the assistant offers computer-based restore | Connect to the computer and select the intended backup. The computer and backup must remain available until the restore is complete. |
| Set Up Without Another Device | No old device or backup | During the initial setup assistant | Configure the iPad as new and sign in manually. You can install apps and bring in files later. |
If you are unsure, use Quick Start when you have a compatible Apple device and want the closest copy of its settings. Choose an iCloud backup when the old device is not available but a recent backup exists. Choose manual setup when you want a clean configuration or have no data to transfer.
Start the setup assistant
- Power on the iPad mini. Press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears. If nothing happens, connect the iPad to power and try again; a completely depleted battery may need to charge before the screen responds.
- Select language and region. These choices affect formats, keyboard options, available services, and some account prompts. Select the location where the iPad will normally be used.
- Use accessibility controls if needed. VoiceOver, Zoom, and other accessibility features can be started from the beginning of setup. Turn them on from the accessibility control shown on the setup screen rather than waiting until the Home Screen.
- Connect to the internet. Select a Wi‑Fi network and enter its password. On a supported Wi‑Fi + Cellular model, the assistant may also offer cellular activation. If the network list is empty or authentication fails, move closer to the router or choose another network before continuing.
Continue through the on-screen instructions until the assistant presents Quick Start, the transfer screen, or a manual setup choice. Labels can vary slightly with iPadOS version and region.
Transfer from an iPhone or iPad with Quick Start
Quick Start is the most direct route when your existing Apple device is available. The current device must be connected to Wi‑Fi with Bluetooth turned on. Keep both devices close together and connected to power until the transfer finishes.

- Turn on the new iPad mini and stop at the setup screen that offers Quick Start.
- Unlock the current iPhone or iPad and place it beside the iPad mini. A prompt to set up the new device should appear on the current device.
- Review the Apple Account shown on the current device and tap the control to continue if it is the account you want on the iPad mini.
- When the animated pattern appears on the iPad mini, use the current device’s camera to scan it. If the camera cannot scan, follow the on-screen option to authenticate manually.
- Enter the current device’s passcode on the iPad mini when asked.
- Complete any identity or account verification prompts. The assistant may ask you to sign in, confirm terms, or configure security features.
- At Transfer Your Data or a similarly named screen, choose either an iCloud download or a direct transfer.
Decide between iCloud download and direct transfer
- iCloud download: Choose this when you want to begin using the iPad mini sooner. The basic setup can finish while apps, photos, and other content download in the background. Keep the iPad on Wi‑Fi and power so the download can continue.
- Direct transfer: Choose this when you want the content copied directly from the current device. Both devices remain occupied for the transfer, and the waiting time depends on the amount of data and network conditions. Do not separate them or power either one off until the assistant reports completion.
Quick Start can occupy the old device for several minutes or longer. A large photo library, many apps, or a slow wireless connection increases the time. If the prompt never appears, verify Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on the current device, unlock it, restart both devices, and place them next to each other again.
Move data from Android
Apple’s Android migration route uses the Move to iOS app and must be selected during the iPad mini’s first-time setup.

- On the iPad mini, continue until the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen.
- Choose From Android.
- On the Android device, open or install Move to iOS and follow its instructions.
- Enter the temporary code displayed by the iPad mini when the Android app requests it.
- Join the temporary wireless network created for the transfer if Move to iOS asks you to do so.
- Select the content categories offered by the app, then leave both devices near each other and connected to power while the progress indicator completes.
- Return to the iPad mini and finish the remaining Apple Account, passcode, and service prompts.
If you already completed setup, the From Android option will not normally be available. Apple’s documented choices are to erase the iPad mini and start the setup assistant again, or move the content manually without Move to iOS. Erasing removes data already placed on the iPad, so make a backup first if there is anything you need to keep.
Restore an iCloud or computer backup
Restore from iCloud
- On the transfer screen, choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup.
- Sign in with the Apple Account that owns the backup.
- Review the backup dates and sizes and select the most recent appropriate backup.
- Keep the iPad mini connected to Wi‑Fi and power while apps, photos, messages, and other content return. Some items may appear gradually rather than all at once.
Apple’s setup guidance says an eligible new-device transfer may receive temporary iCloud storage sufficient for a backup, free for up to three weeks from the purchase date. Eligibility and the exact menu path can change, so check the options shown on your current device rather than assuming every purchase qualifies.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Restore from a computer
- Choose the computer-backup option when it appears in the transfer choices.
- Connect the iPad mini to the computer used for the backup and open the system’s device-management or backup application.
- Select the intended backup by date. If the backup is encrypted, enter its backup password when prompted.
- Leave the iPad connected until the restore and any initial synchronization finish.
A backup restore brings back data and settings captured in that backup, but it does not guarantee that every app will be immediately available offline. The iPad may need Wi‑Fi to redownload apps and synchronize cloud content.
Set up the iPad mini without transferring data
Choose Set Up Without Another Device or Set Up Manually when you have no previous device, want a clean start, or prefer to configure services one at a time.
- Select the manual setup option on the transfer screen.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi and sign in with your Apple Account, or create an account if the assistant offers that choice.
- Set a passcode. Use a code you can remember but that others cannot easily guess.
- Configure biometric authentication if your iPad mini model supports it and you want to use it. The assistant explains the required enrollment steps.
- Review iCloud, automatic updates, location, analytics, and other service prompts. Turn on only the services you understand and want.
- Finish at the Home Screen, then open the App Store to install apps and open iCloud settings to select the data you want synchronized.
Manual setup does not prevent you from adding files later. You can sign in to cloud services, download apps, import documents, or restore selected data after the initial assistant has finished.

Complete Apple Account, security, and service settings
The setup assistant can ask you to sign in, verify your identity, create a passcode, configure biometrics where supported, and review software and service choices. Prompts differ by model, iPadOS version, country or region, and the settings already associated with your Apple Account.

An already signed-in iPhone or iPad may support proximity-based sign-in in the documented setup flow. If verification fails, confirm that the iPad has internet access and that the trusted phone number or device can receive a code.
Passcode and biometrics
A passcode protects the iPad mini even when biometric authentication is enabled. Record it in a secure password manager or another safe location; Apple cannot recover a forgotten passcode without an erase-and-restore process. If biometric enrollment is offered, complete it only after choosing a passcode.
Updates and services
Read the update and service screens before accepting them. Automatic updates can keep iPadOS current, while location, analytics, and cloud options affect privacy, battery use, and synchronization. You can change many of these choices later in Settings, but the setup assistant is the first place to make an informed choice.
Activate cellular service on a Wi‑Fi + Cellular iPad mini
Only some iPad mini configurations include cellular hardware. If yours is a Wi‑Fi + Cellular model, setup may offer activation with a carrier. The available method depends on the model and carrier:

- nano‑SIM: A physical SIM can be used on supported models and carrier plans.
- Wi‑Fi only: This configuration has no cellular activation step and requires Wi‑Fi or another internet-sharing method for online setup.
Do not force a universal SIM procedure. Check the tray, cellular settings, and carrier instructions for your exact model. If activation is unavailable, finish setup over Wi‑Fi and contact the carrier with the iPad’s requested account or device details.

Apple provides a Family Sharing setup flow for a child’s iPad. The documented Quick Start process for this use case requires Bluetooth and iPadOS 16 or later. Age ranges, account requirements, and consent rules vary by country or region.
- Set up or verify Family Sharing on the family organizer’s Apple Account.
- Place the child’s new iPad mini near the organizer’s compatible iPhone or iPad with Bluetooth enabled.
- Follow the child setup prompts and create or select the child’s account as instructed.
- Review parental controls, age-appropriate settings, purchase approval, communication limits, and Screen Time options before handing over the iPad.
If the child’s iPad has already been configured with a different account, the available Family Sharing choices may be different. Avoid sharing an adult’s Apple Account; a separate child account keeps purchases, messages, backups, and restrictions manageable.
Set up an organization-managed iPad
An iPad mini supplied by a school or employer may be enrolled through Apple School Manager or Apple Business. In that situation, do not treat it like a personal iPad.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Ask the organization’s administrator or teacher for the approved setup instructions.
- Use the organization’s enrollment credentials, network, and management prompts when requested.
- Do not erase, remove management profiles, or attempt to bypass enrollment to use personal transfer methods.
Apple states that Apple School Manager or Apple Business enrollment prevents Quick Start data transfer from a current device. If the iPad displays a management or remote-configuration screen, stop and follow the organization’s process.

Troubleshoot setup problems
The iPad mini will not turn on
Connect it to power and wait several minutes before trying the top button again. Check the cable and power adapter with another compatible device if possible. A depleted battery may show no immediate response.
Quick Start does not appear
- Unlock the current iPhone or iPad.
- Confirm that Wi‑Fi is connected and Bluetooth is enabled on the current device.
- Move both devices within a few inches of each other and connect them to power.
- Restart both devices and return the new iPad mini to the setup assistant.
- Check whether the iPad is organization-managed; Apple School Manager or Apple Business enrollment blocks Quick Start transfer.
The transfer is taking too long
Large backups and photo libraries take longer, and wireless conditions affect the estimate. Keep the devices close, powered, and untouched. If you selected iCloud download, you can use the iPad while content continues in the background. If you selected direct transfer, interrupting it can require starting the transfer again.
Move to iOS cannot connect
Keep the Android device and iPad mini on power, disable settings that automatically switch away from a temporary Wi‑Fi network, and follow the code and network instructions shown by Move to iOS. If the iPad has already reached the Home Screen, erase it only after preserving anything important, then restart setup and choose From Android.
Cellular activation fails
Finish setup over Wi‑Fi, then check the cellular settings and carrier account. Confirm that the iPad mini model supports the carrier’s eSIM or nano‑SIM method. A carrier may need to provision the plan or replace an unsupported SIM.
You cannot sign in to the Apple Account
Verify the email address or phone number, password, internet connection, and two-factor verification method. If the account belongs to an organization or child, use the administrator or family-organizer instructions instead of repeatedly entering a personal account.
Quick Recap
Checklist after reaching the Home Screen
- Open Settings and verify the Apple Account name and iCloud synchronization choices.
- Install pending iPadOS updates when you have a stable Wi‑Fi connection and sufficient battery or power.
- Open the App Store and allow required apps to finish downloading.
- Check Photos, Messages, Contacts, Notes, and Files to confirm that expected cloud or backup content is returning.
- Set up FaceTime, Messages, email accounts, and notifications only if you need them on this iPad.
- Review privacy, location, Screen Time, and content restrictions, especially on a child’s device.
- Test the passcode, biometric unlock if enabled, speakers, cameras, and Wi‑Fi before removing the old device from service.
- Keep the old iPhone, iPad, Android device, or backup until you have verified that important data is present on the iPad mini.
