To set up an Insta360 Flow-series phone gimbal, first identify whether you have Flow, Flow Pro, Flow 2 or Flow 2 Pro. The two magnetic-clamp generations are not interchangeable. Then check that your phone fits the clamp, center the phone in the clamp in both directions, attach the clamp in the marked orientation, unfold and power on the gimbal, and pair it over Bluetooth or in the Insta360 app.

In Insta360’s setup instructions, “balance” means positioning the phone correctly in the magnetic clamp. They do not describe a separate user adjustment that slides the phone along the motor axes. If the phone is centered and the clamp is attached to the gimbal’s alignment marks, you have completed the documented balancing step.

Check your Flow generation before attaching anything

Flow accessories are generation-specific. Look at the name printed on the handle, packaging or original documentation and identify the exact model: Insta360 Flow, Flow Pro, Flow 2 or Flow 2 Pro. The original Flow and Flow Pro use one magnetic phone-clamp generation; Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro use another. Insta360’s accessory compatibility table marks those two generations as unsupported across the groups.

A clamp can appear to attach magnetically and still be the wrong generation. Confirm the model and the accessory listing before ordering a replacement; do not assume a listing that says “Flow” covers every Flow-series product.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Confirm that your phone is within the recommended fit range

Insta360’s general Flow-series guidance recommends a phone measuring 6.9–10 mm thick, 64–84 mm wide and weighing 130–300 g. These are manufacturer recommendations for secure clamping. A phone outside any of those limits may not be held securely and could fall.

  • Thickness: measure the phone with any case, camera protector or other item that will remain on it during use. A thick case can put an otherwise compatible phone over the limit.
  • Width: the clamp must grip the handset without its jaws sitting on a curved edge or an unstable part of the case.
  • Weight: include the phone, case and attached accessories. A heavy combination can overload the intended grip even when the bare phone is within range.

Also check Insta360’s current phone compatibility list for your exact handset. That list identifies tested models and feature support; it should not be read as a guarantee that every phone not shown is incompatible, nor as proof that every listed feature works identically on every operating-system version.

What “balance” means on an Insta360 Flow gimbal

For these setup instructions, balancing is a positioning task: center the phone in the magnetic clamp horizontally and vertically, orient it according to the camera icon, and attach the clamp using the gimbal’s alignment marks. The clamp should extend evenly on both sides of the phone.

The documented Flow installation steps do not describe a separate manual motor-balancing procedure in which you slide the phone relative to the tilt, roll or pan axes. Do not add a motor-adjustment sequence from a different gimbal family. If the gimbal vibrates, droops or refuses to operate after the clamp is centered, treat that as a fit, attachment, power or model-specific issue and use the troubleshooting checks below.

How do I set up an Insta360 phone gimbal and balance my phone?

1. Identify the exact model and clamp

  1. Read the model name on the gimbal or its packaging.
  2. Use the matching clamp generation from the compatibility table above.
  3. If you are replacing a lost clamp, verify the product description identifies your generation before buying. For example, a listing described as an “Insta360 Flow 2 Pro magnetic phone clamp” is for the Flow 2/Flow 2 Pro generation, not automatically for Flow or Flow Pro.

2. Prepare the phone and check its fit

  1. Remove anything that prevents the clamp jaws from sitting flat, or confirm that your case still keeps the phone within the recommended thickness and weight limits.
  2. Check the handset against the 6.9–10 mm thickness, 64–84 mm width and 130–300 g weight recommendations.
  3. Look up the exact phone in Insta360’s compatibility list if you need app control, camera controls or tracking features. Basic physical attachment and electronic feature support are separate checks.

3. Center the phone in the magnetic clamp

  1. Extend the magnetic clamp so its jaws can accept the phone.
  2. Place the phone in the clamp in a stable position.
  3. Adjust the clamp until the phone is centered horizontally and vertically. The clamp should extend by approximately the same amount on the left and right, and the phone should not sit high or low in the jaws.
  4. Match the phone-camera direction to the camera icon on the clamp. This orientation tells you which end of the phone faces the gimbal’s intended camera direction.
  5. Check that the clamp is gripping the phone rather than only the case lip or a curved edge.

This is the key balancing step. Centering reduces the uneven load that can make a gimbal work harder and helps the phone remain in the intended camera orientation.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

4. Attach the clamp to the gimbal

Attach the clamp to the phone first; do not magnetically mount an empty clamp and then try to force the phone into it.

  1. Hold the phone and clamp together in the orientation indicated by the camera icon.
  2. On the rear of the clamp, find the notch. On the gimbal’s magnetic surface, find the raised matching part.
  3. Bring the clamp to the magnetic surface so the notch aligns with that raised part.
  4. Match the clamp’s groove to the gimbal’s red alignment dot.
  5. Let the magnetic connection seat fully, then gently check that the clamp is flush and does not rock or slide.

If the notch, groove and red dot do not line up naturally, remove the clamp and turn it around rather than forcing it. A reversed or partially seated clamp is not a completed setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Unfold the gimbal and power it on

  1. Hold the handle securely.
  2. Pull the arm outward to unfold the gimbal as shown in the instructions for your exact model.
  3. For Flow 2 Pro, unfolding powers the gimbal on automatically; wait for the indicator light. Flow 2 uses the same basic unfold-and-start sequence, while indicator behavior can differ by model.
  4. For Flow and Flow Pro, follow the model manual’s power-button and indicator-light directions if unfolding alone does not start the device.

Keep the phone supported while unfolding. If the arm will not move normally, stop and check that the clamp is the correct generation and that no case, strap or accessory is obstructing the joints.

6. Pair the phone when you need electronic control

The Flow-series Bluetooth guidance lists Bluetooth 5.0 or later, Android 7.0 or later, or iOS 11 or later on iPhone 8 or later. Controls available after pairing depend on the phone, operating-system version, gimbal model and camera app.

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on the phone.
  2. Open the Insta360 app and follow its device-connection flow, or open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the visible Flow-series device when the model instructions direct you to do so.
  3. Accept any pairing or permission prompts. Camera, microphone, location or notification permissions can affect which controls appear.
  4. Open the camera function you intend to use and test the shutter, recording and tracking controls before starting an important shot.

Bluetooth pairing is not required merely to hold the phone in the clamp or to use the gimbal as a physical stabilizer, but app-based controls and some tracking features do require a supported connection.

How do I center my phone on the Insta360 Flow clamp?

Use the clamp itself as the reference, not the phone’s camera bump or the edge of a case. With the clamp extended, place the phone so the jaws have equal extension on the left and right. Then move it up or down until the clamp sits in the middle of the phone’s height. The camera icon indicates the required camera direction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Centered left to right: neither jaw is noticeably farther from the phone’s side than the other.
  • Centered top to bottom: the phone is not hanging above or below the clamp’s central grip.
  • Stable contact: the jaws press on solid, flat areas and the phone does not rotate when you lightly touch it.
  • Correct direction: the phone’s camera side matches the clamp icon before the clamp is attached to the gimbal.

Do not try to compensate for an off-center phone by twisting the clamp on the gimbal. Remove it, recenter the phone, and then realign the notch, groove and red dot.

How do I connect my Flow gimbal to my phone?

Basic Bluetooth and app connection

Use the Insta360 app’s device-connection screen when possible because it can identify the model and expose the controls supported by that phone. If the model instructions call for system Bluetooth pairing, use the phone’s Bluetooth settings instead. Keep the phone close to the gimbal during the first connection and make sure the gimbal is powered on.

If the gimbal appears in Bluetooth but does not connect in the app, close other camera or gimbal apps, toggle Bluetooth off and on, and retry from the app. If it does not appear at all, confirm the gimbal’s indicator shows that it is on, then consult the exact model’s reset or pairing instructions rather than repeatedly attaching and detaching the phone.

Flow 2 Pro DockKit tracking

Flow 2 Pro’s DockKit tracking guidance is a separate requirement from ordinary Bluetooth connection. It specifies an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 17 or higher and describes NFC pairing. Those requirements apply to Flow 2 Pro DockKit tracking; they are not requirements for every Flow-series gimbal or for basic attachment.

If you have an older iPhone, an Android phone or an earlier iOS version, you may still be able to use supported Flow 2 Pro controls, but you should not expect DockKit tracking under those stated requirements. Verify the current compatibility information for the exact phone and feature you intend to use.

Fit and attachment checks before recording

Run these checks after mounting and before you walk, pan or extend the selfie stick:

  • Confirm the phone remains centered after the clamp is attached to the gimbal.
  • Confirm the clamp’s notch is seated on the gimbal’s raised part and the groove aligns with the red dot.
  • Gently press the phone from different sides. It should not slide, rotate or lift out of the jaws.
  • Check that the phone’s camera lenses are not blocked by a clamp jaw, case edge or accessory.
  • Make a short test recording and verify that the camera points in the direction expected from the clamp icon.
  • Watch the indicator and app status for a stable connection before relying on remote controls.

If any check fails, power down if necessary, detach the clamp, correct the phone position and repeat the attachment sequence. Do not continue with a loose or visibly tilted phone.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

The clamp will not sit flush or the alignment marks do not match

The most likely causes are a reversed clamp, a wrong-generation accessory or debris between the magnetic surfaces. Remove the clamp, confirm the model generation, locate the notch and groove, and reattach with the groove over the red dot. Never force a clamp whose raised part and notch do not correspond.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phone feels loose

Recenter it vertically and horizontally, then check the phone’s complete thickness, width and weight with its case. A handset outside the recommended range may not be secure. A curved or very slippery case can also prevent reliable contact; remove it for a controlled fit check if doing so keeps the phone within the stated dimensions.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

The phone is centered but the gimbal shakes, droops or strains

First confirm that the clamp is the correct generation and fully seated. Then remove excess accessories and verify the total phone-and-case weight. The documented setup does not include a user motor-balancing adjustment, so do not try to cure a fit problem by sliding the phone along the motor arms. If the correct clamp and a supported phone still behave abnormally, stop use and follow the model-specific support or reset procedure.

The app connects but a button or camera control does not work

Feature support varies by phone and model. Check the exact handset in Insta360’s compatibility list, confirm the app has the requested permissions, and test with the camera app or mode supported for that combination. Basic Bluetooth connection does not guarantee every camera-control function.

DockKit tracking is unavailable on Flow 2 Pro

Check that the phone is an iPhone 12 or later and that it runs iOS 17 or higher. Confirm that you are using the Flow 2 Pro rather than Flow 2, and follow the NFC or app pairing path specified for DockKit. A phone that fails one of those requirements should not be treated as DockKit-compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safety and handling cautions

Flow 2 Pro is not waterproof

Do not use Flow 2 Pro as though it were waterproof. Keep it away from rain, splashes and wet environments that could expose the gimbal or phone to liquid. Insta360 also advises against high-impact activity because a drop can damage the equipment or release the phone.

Keep the magnetic clamp away from sensitive products

Insta360’s hardware guidance advises keeping the magnetic clamp away from magnet-sensitive products such as bank cards, pacemakers, RAM chips and hard drives. Magnetic signals can also affect some Samsung MST implementations and wireless charging. Remove the phone clamp before using those functions or placing the clamp near sensitive items.

Use a stable support for extended selfie-stick setups

Flow 2 Pro includes a built-in tripod for hands-free use. Insta360 recommends an external tripod attached through the handle’s 1/4-inch screw hole when the selfie stick remains extended for a long time. Avoid windy or unstable environments with the built-in tripod; a phone mounted high on an extended stick can tip more easily.

Choosing a replacement clamp or support

For a replacement clamp, compare in this order:

  1. Exact gimbal generation: Flow/Flow Pro and Flow 2/Flow 2 Pro clamps are separate, unsupported generations.
  2. Phone fit: check width, thickness, weight and the case you will actually use.
  3. Feature support: verify the handset-specific compatibility list if you need app controls or tracking.
  4. Availability and convenience: consider these only after the first three checks pass.

An optional external tripod with a 1/4-inch mount is relevant when a Flow 2 Pro selfie stick stays extended for prolonged use. No particular tripod brand is required by the setup guidance; the important characteristics are the 1/4-inch connection and a stable base.

Quick setup checklist

  • Model identified: Flow, Flow Pro, Flow 2 or Flow 2 Pro.
  • Clamp generation matches that model.
  • Phone and case meet the 6.9–10 mm, 64–84 mm and 130–300 g recommendations.
  • Phone is centered horizontally and vertically in the clamp.
  • Camera direction matches the clamp icon.
  • Clamp notch matches the gimbal’s raised part.
  • Clamp groove aligns with the red dot.
  • Arm is unfolded and the correct power sequence has completed.
  • Bluetooth or app pairing is complete if electronic controls are needed.
  • Phone remains secure during a gentle movement check.

Key distinction to remember

On Insta360 Flow-series setup instructions, “balance your phone” means center it in the correct magnetic clamp and attach that clamp in the marked orientation. It does not mean performing a separate manual motor-balancing adjustment. Correct generation, correct phone fit, centered placement and complete magnetic alignment are the steps that determine whether the setup is ready to use.
