To connect a supported HP inkjet printer, connect your phone to the Wi‑Fi network you want the printer to use, install the HP app offered for your phone and printer, turn on Bluetooth for setup detection, and follow the app’s Add printer instructions. After setup, print through the HP app; on a compatible iPhone or iPad, you can also use AirPrint when both devices are on the same Wi‑Fi network.

What you need before connecting the printer

HP inkjet menus and button combinations differ by model. Find the exact model number on the printer’s front, top, or rear label before starting. The model determines whether the printer has a screen, which wireless reset procedure it uses, and whether features such as AirPrint, WPS, or Wi‑Fi Direct are available.

  • A wireless-capable HP inkjet printer with power connected.
  • The Wi‑Fi network name and password you intend to use. A normal home network is preferable to a guest network because guest networks often isolate devices from one another.
  • An iPhone, iPad, or Android phone connected to that same intended network.
  • The current HP app offered for your phone and printer. HP says the HP app replaces HP Smart where it is available; HP Smart remains available on devices or in regions where the newer app is unavailable. Check HP’s HP app setup instructions for the option shown in your region.
  • Paper loaded in the input tray. Use a size and type supported by your model; ordinary inkjet printer paper is suitable for a basic test unless your manual specifies otherwise.

Place the phone near both the printer and router while setting up. Turn on Bluetooth and allow the HP app’s requested location or nearby-device permissions. HP uses Bluetooth for initial discovery; Bluetooth does not carry the document during ordinary network printing.

Connect an HP inkjet printer to Wi‑Fi with the HP app

This is the general method for supported HP printers on Android, iPhone, and iPad. The app supplies the exact prompts for your model rather than relying on one universal button sequence.

  1. Connect the phone to the target Wi‑Fi. Open the phone’s Wi‑Fi settings, select the network the printer should join, and enter its password. Disable any VPN or network profile that prevents local-device discovery during setup.
  2. Install or open the HP app. Get the app from HP’s setup flow or your phone’s official app store. If HP Smart is already installed and the newer HP app is not offered for your device or region, HP identifies HP Smart as the supported alternative.
  3. Start a new-printer or add-printer workflow. In the app, choose the option to add a printer or set up a new printer. Accept Bluetooth and location permissions when requested so the app can look for nearby devices.
  4. Put the printer in setup mode if prompted. A new printer may enter this state during first-time setup. For a printer previously connected to another router, use the model-specific wireless setup or network-reset instructions. Do not guess a button combination: HP documents different procedures for printers with screens, printers without screens, and different product families.
  5. Select the detected printer. Confirm the model shown in the app matches the label on your printer. If several nearby HP printers appear, use the model name or the temporary identifier displayed by the printer.
  6. Send the Wi‑Fi credentials through the app. Choose the intended network and enter its password exactly, including capitalization. Keep the phone close to the router and printer until the app reports that the printer is connected.
  7. Finish the printer registration prompts. The app may ask you to sign in, enable optional notifications, or complete supplies and scan setup. These choices do not change the basic Wi‑Fi connection; you can decline optional notifications and still print.
  8. Print a test document. Use the app’s print function and select a short document or photo. A successful page confirms that the printer joined the network and that the phone can reach it.

HP describes Wi‑Fi setup mode as the state that allows a printer to accept a new Wi‑Fi connection from the HP app. If setup mode is restored, HP says it remains active until the connection succeeds or two hours pass. Add the printer in the app during that window rather than waiting until later.

If the HP app cannot find your printer

Work through these checks before resetting anything else:

  1. Confirm the phone is still connected to the intended home Wi‑Fi rather than cellular data, a different band or network name, or a guest SSID.
  2. Move the phone and printer closer to the router. Avoid placing the printer behind a metal cabinet or at the edge of wireless coverage.
  3. Check that the printer’s wireless light or network status indicates Wi‑Fi is enabled and that the printer is not displaying an error, paused state, or paper jam.
  4. Verify that the HP app is the version offered for your phone and region. If the app is unavailable, follow HP’s setup page for the supported HP Smart path.
  5. Restore the printer’s Wi‑Fi setup mode using the instructions for its exact model, then immediately return to the app and choose Add printer. The two-hour setup window starts when setup mode is restored.
  6. Restart the phone, printer, and router only after recording the network name and password. A router restart can temporarily disconnect other devices.

HP’s Wi‑Fi network setup guide includes common reset approaches and directs you to model-specific instructions when the general procedure does not apply. Ask for the exact model number before following a button sequence copied from instructions for a different printer.

Print from an iPhone or iPad with AirPrint

AirPrint is separate from the HP app’s print and management features. HP Support states: “Apple AirPrint is a built-in print driver that allows you to print from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to most HP printers.” See HP’s AirPrint setup instructions for compatibility and connection checks.

HP Smart Tank 5000 Ink Tank Printer | 2 Years of Ink Included | All-in-One | Low Cost Printing | Cartridge-Free Refillable Ink System | Wireless Printer | Print, Scan, Copy | Ideal for Home
  • SET IT UP ONCE AND PRINT WITH CONFIDENCE. No complicated maintenance. Just easy, reliable printing you can count on.
  • INK FOR YEARS. NOT MONTHS. Up to 2 years of ink included. Get thousands of pages of cartridge-free printing. More pages, less hassle
  • KEEPS PRINTING WELL AFTER COMPETITORS HAVE QUIT. No complex maintenance. Sharper text, richer colors.[2] Only with HP Smart Tank
  • PREMIUM SUPPORT - Strong technical expertise to solve issues faster
  • THE LAST PRINTER YOU'LL EVER NEED. Enjoy years of refillable, cartridge-free printing.
  1. Connect the iPhone or iPad and the HP printer to the same Wi‑Fi network. AirPrint does not normally discover a printer that is connected only to a different network or to Wi‑Fi Direct.
  2. Open the document, photograph, email, or webpage in its app.
  3. Tap the app’s Share, More, or action button, then choose Print. The exact location depends on the app.
  4. Tap Select Printer and choose the HP printer. If it is absent, check the same-network requirement and the printer’s wireless status.
  5. Set copies, page range, paper size, or other options exposed by that app, then tap Print.

The HP app remains useful on Apple devices when you need printer status, scanning, supplies information, or HP-specific settings. AirPrint is the shorter path for a routine document once the printer is already on the network.

Print from an Android phone

Use the HP app’s print command after setup. Open the file or photo, choose the Android share or menu action, select the HP printing option shown by the app or system, choose the connected printer, set copies and pages, and submit the job. Android print menus and plugin requirements vary by phone manufacturer, Android release, and app version, so follow the current prompts shown on your device rather than installing an unrelated driver.

If the printer is visible in the HP app but not in another Android application, print from inside the HP app first. That separates a file-sharing or application permission problem from a network problem. For version-specific Android instructions, use HP’s current mobile setup guidance and identify your phone model and Android version.

Choose the right connection method

Method Best fit Requirements and trade-offs
HP app setup and printing Most supported phones and HP inkjet printers The app must be available for the phone and region. Bluetooth can help discover the printer during setup, while the print job normally uses Wi‑Fi. Model-specific prompts control the process.
Apple AirPrint Routine printing from an iPhone or iPad A compatible HP printer and Apple device must be on the same Wi‑Fi network. AirPrint is built into Apple devices; HP’s app adds management and scanning features.
WPS push button Joining a router without typing the Wi‑Fi password The router must support WPS, and the printer must expose a compatible WPS option. Exact button or menu steps vary by model.
Wi‑Fi Direct Printing directly when ordinary local-network discovery is unsuitable The printer and phone must support Wi‑Fi Direct. The connection is direct between devices rather than through the shared home network, and setup details are model-specific.

Use WPS when the router supports it

WPS can transfer the router connection without manually entering the network name and password. It is not available on every router, and many newer routers hide or disable the feature.

  1. Check that the router has a WPS button or WPS control in its administration interface.
  2. Open the printer’s wireless setup menu or use the model’s WPS push-button procedure.
  3. Within the time limit shown by the printer, press the router’s WPS button.
  4. Wait for the printer’s wireless status to indicate a connection, then print a test page from the HP app.

HP’s WPS instructions cover the push-button method and its support requirement. If the router has no WPS feature, return to HP app setup rather than trying to substitute a random button sequence.

Use Wi‑Fi Direct for a direct phone-to-printer link

Wi‑Fi Direct creates a wireless connection between the phone and printer without joining both devices to the ordinary home network. It can help when a guest network prevents devices from discovering one another, provided the printer and phone support it.

  1. Enable Wi‑Fi Direct on the printer using its wireless menu or the model’s documented control sequence.
  2. Read the Wi‑Fi Direct name and password shown on the printer’s screen, information page, or status report.
  3. On the phone, open Wi‑Fi settings and select the printer’s Wi‑Fi Direct network.
  4. Return to the HP app or the phone’s supported print path and select the printer.
  5. After printing, reconnect the phone to the normal home Wi‑Fi if you want internet access or access to other local devices.

Wi‑Fi Direct is a connection alternative, not a repair for every printer fault. HP’s Wi‑Fi Direct setup page provides model-dependent details, including Android connection guidance.

Troubleshoot a printer that joins Wi‑Fi but will not print

The printer appears offline

Check the printer’s wireless status and compare the network name with the phone’s current network. If the router was replaced or its password changed, the printer may still be remembering the old credentials. Restore Wi‑Fi setup mode and add the printer again through the HP app. A test page from the app is more useful than repeatedly retrying a job in another application.

The password is rejected

Re-enter it carefully; Wi‑Fi passwords are case-sensitive. Confirm that you selected the intended SSID rather than a similarly named guest or extender network. If the printer is far from the router, move it closer during setup so a weak signal does not interrupt credential exchange.

The printer connects, but the phone cannot discover it

Guest-network isolation is a common cause: the phone and printer may both have internet access while being blocked from communicating with each other. Connect both to the main local network, or use Wi‑Fi Direct if the model supports it. Also check that a VPN, firewall, or privacy setting on the phone is not blocking local-network access.

AirPrint does not list the printer

AirPrint requires the Apple device and printer to be on the same Wi‑Fi network. Confirm the printer is not connected through Wi‑Fi Direct while the iPhone is on the home network, and verify that the printer supports AirPrint. Restarting the print app after the printer reconnects can refresh the device list.

The job is stuck or pages are blank

Check for paper, a cover or cartridge error, and the printer’s queue. Cancel the stuck job in the HP app, clear any physical error, and send a one-page test. Blank or faint output is a supply or printhead issue rather than a Wi‑Fi discovery issue; follow the maintenance instructions for the exact model.

Model-specific supplies and setup cautions

Do not assume that every HP inkjet uses the same cartridges, bottles, paper settings, or wireless controls. Match supplies to the model number and regional specification.

Paper for the test print

Standard inkjet printer paper is a practical choice for confirming connectivity. Photo, borderless, heavyweight, and specialty papers require the corresponding media setting and may be unsupported in some trays. Load one or two sheets first so a failed test does not waste a full stack.

Smart Tank ink bottles

If the printer is an HP Smart Tank model, HP’s first-time Smart Tank setup guidance says to use official HP ink bottles for the cited Smart Tank families. Confirm the exact tank family and ink code before opening a bottle; this is not a universal requirement for every HP inkjet printer.

After setup: keep the connection reliable

  • Leave the printer within reliable wireless range of the router.
  • Record the printer model and the network it uses so a future router change can be handled with the correct reset instructions.
  • Use the HP app to check status before assuming a phone or document problem.
  • When moving between home, office, and guest networks, expect to repeat network setup or use Wi‑Fi Direct.
  • For a new router or changed Wi‑Fi password, restore setup mode and add the printer again rather than repeatedly retrying the old connection.
