To use an FPGA console with a PAL or NTSC television, match three things: the console’s output signal, the cable or adapter carrying it, and the display input’s accepted resolution and scan rate. PAL and NTSC labels alone are not enough. A CRT may accept 15 kHz television timing but reject a 31 kHz computer-monitor signal, while an HDMI television may accept neither an analog RGB nor a composite connection without additional hardware.

The practical instructions below use MiSTer FPGA because its official documentation defines the relevant output modes and settings. Other FPGA consoles can implement regional timing and analog video differently, so use their platform-specific manual for equivalent settings.

What PAL and NTSC mean for an FPGA console

PAL and NTSC describe families of television standards, but they combine several characteristics that must be considered separately:

  • Refresh rate: classic NTSC timing is approximately 60 Hz, while PAL systems commonly use approximately 50 Hz.
  • Active resolution and line timing: PAL and NTSC games may generate different line counts and horizontal timings.
  • Color encoding: composite and S-Video use encoded color systems; RGB and component video carry color differently.
  • Connector and signal type: a VGA-shaped connector does not automatically mean the same signal as a VGA computer monitor.
  • Game or core behavior: a core may implement PAL and NTSC timing, expose a regional option, or support only one timing mode.

An FPGA console can therefore run a PAL game and still fail to display on a particular NTSC television. The game region, the core’s generated timing, the selected output mode, and the television’s input capabilities all have to agree.

Check the display before changing settings

Write down the exact input you intend to use. Do not buy a cable until this is clear.

Identify the available connector

  • HDMI: use the console’s normal digital output when the display is an HDMI television or monitor.
  • VGA: may carry RGB, component-style YPbPr, or a sync arrangement intended for a CRT. Confirm the console documentation and the display’s specifications.
  • RGB SCART: normally expects analog RGB plus the correct sync signal. A passive cable does not convert HDMI, YPbPr, or composite video into RGB.
  • Component YPbPr: requires hardware and a cable that actually output YPbPr. An ordinary VGA cable is not automatically component.
  • S-Video or composite/CVBS: these are lower-bandwidth analog television connections and use encoded color. They have their own regional and timing considerations.

Confirm scan rate and resolution

CRT televisions generally expect a 15 kHz television signal. Many computer CRTs and LCD monitors expect 31 kHz or higher. MiSTer documentation distinguishes television-style 15 kHz output from 31 kHz computer-monitor modes; a VGA monitor may require the scan doubler. A display that cannot lock to the core’s horizontal frequency will show no picture, rolling video, or an unstable image even when the connector is correct.

Check regional timing support

Look for the display’s accepted refresh rates and standards, not merely a PAL or NTSC sticker. Some multisystem televisions accept both 50 and 60 Hz; others accept only one. A modern HDMI display may accept the digital mode produced by MiSTer while having no analog PAL or NTSC input at all.

Choose the output path that matches the display

Display and input MiSTer path What must match Typical limitation
HDMI television or monitor MiSTer HDMI output HDMI mode, resolution, and refresh rate supported by the display Does not directly provide analog RGB, YPbPr, S-Video, or composite.
CRT with RGB SCART Analog I/O board VGA output or a supported Direct Video adapter, then VGA-to-RGB-SCART wiring RGB mode, sync wiring, 15 kHz timing, and the SCART input standard A passive cable cannot perform signal conversion; pinout and sync must be correct.
CRT or television with component input Analog output configured for YPbPr, using hardware and cable that support it YPbPr mode, component connector wiring, scan rate, and display compatibility A VGA connector does not prove that YPbPr is available.
Television with S-Video Analog output configured for S-Video S-Video wiring and the appropriate NTSC, PAL-60, or PAL-M mode MiSTer’s ntsc_mode applies only to S-Video and CVBS, and the official reference says no cores officially use those settings.
Television with composite/CVBS Analog output configured for CVBS Composite wiring, color standard, sync, and scan rate Composite encoding is the most restrictive path and may produce color or lock problems when standards are mismatched.

MiSTer hardware you may need

Analog I/O board

The MiSTer Analog I/O board provides the documented VGA analog-output path. Depending on the configuration, it can be used with an RGB SCART cable, a component cable, or other wiring that matches the selected mode and the display input. Verify the board revision, connector wiring, and sync requirements before ordering a cable.

Direct Video adapter

Direct Video changes MiSTer’s HDMI output path to analog and works only with supported HDMI-to-VGA adapters. The adapter is not an ordinary passive HDMI cable. Compatibility depends on the adapter chipset and the console’s Direct Video implementation. If the screen is blank or colors are wrong, check the adapter model, the selected vga_mode, sync configuration, and, where relevant, HDMI color-range settings.

Cables

For RGB SCART, use a cable wired for the specific MiSTer output and the television’s SCART pinout. For component, use a cable designed for YPbPr output, not a generic VGA lead. For S-Video or composite, use the correct analog connector and confirm whether the cable carries luma, chroma, and sync as expected. A connector’s shape is not evidence that the signal is compatible.

Configure MiSTer.ini step by step

MiSTer’s official INI Settings documentation defines the following controls. Edit the configuration on the MiSTer system’s boot media, then restart MiSTer so the new output mode is loaded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Make a backup. Copy the existing MiSTer.ini before editing it. This gives you a known-good configuration to restore if the display goes blank.
  2. Choose the physical output path. Decide whether you are using HDMI, the Analog I/O board, or a supported Direct Video adapter. Do not select a setting for a connector you are not physically using.
  3. Set vga_mode to the signal type. The documented values are rgb (the default), ypbpr, svideo, and cvbs. Use rgb for an RGB path, ypbpr for component video, svideo for S-Video, and cvbs for composite.
  4. Set the display frequency and resolution appropriately. Use a 15 kHz television mode for a CRT television that requires it. Use a scan-doubled or monitor-compatible mode when the display requires 31 kHz or higher. The exact core resolution still has to be accepted by the display.
  5. Only for S-Video or CVBS, consider ntsc_mode. The documented values are 0 for normal NTSC, 1 for PAL-60, and 2 for PAL-M. This setting does not globally convert every core or every output type, and the official reference states that no cores officially use these settings.
  6. Use composite_sync only when the wiring requires it. This option sends sync on VGA HSync for configurations that need composite sync. It is not a PAL/NTSC selector. Enable it only when the cable, adapter, and display expect that sync arrangement.
  7. Use menu_pal for the menu core when necessary. This forces the MiSTer menu core into PAL mode. It changes menu timing; it is not a universal regional switch for loaded game cores.
  8. Save, reboot, and test the menu first. If the menu is not stable, do not troubleshoot a game core yet. Recheck the output mode, cable, input selection, and scan rate.

Settings reference

Setting Documented purpose Important boundary
vga_mode Selects rgb, ypbpr, svideo, or cvbs. Must match the actual cable and display input.
ntsc_mode=0 Normal NTSC for S-Video or CVBS. Not a global setting for HDMI, RGB, or YPbPr.
ntsc_mode=1 PAL-60 for S-Video or CVBS. Requires a display that accepts PAL-60; it does not create 50 Hz PAL timing.
ntsc_mode=2 PAL-M for S-Video or CVBS. Only relevant where the display and core support that standard.
composite_sync Sends sync on VGA HSync for compatible configurations. Depends on cable and display wiring.
menu_pal Forces the MiSTer menu core into PAL mode. Does not force every game core to PAL timing.

How to use PAL games on an NTSC CRT

A PAL game can display on an NTSC CRT only when the CRT accepts the timing and signal produced by the active core and output path. There is no single INI switch that guarantees this. The practical sequence is:

  1. Load the core and identify whether it is generating 50 Hz PAL timing, 60 Hz NTSC timing, or a core-specific hybrid mode.
  2. Confirm that the CRT accepts that vertical frequency. An NTSC-only television may reject a true 50 Hz signal even if the game itself loads correctly.
  3. Confirm that the analog signal format matches the television input. RGB SCART, component, S-Video, and composite have different wiring and color behavior.
  4. If you are using S-Video or composite, test the applicable ntsc_mode value. Remember that the official documentation says no cores officially use these settings, so a change may have no effect for a particular core.
  5. If you are using RGB or YPbPr, focus on scan rate, sync, cable wiring, and core timing rather than ntsc_mode.

Some cores provide their own video or region controls. Those controls take precedence over assumptions based on the game cartridge’s label. Read the core’s documentation and test the actual timing shown by the display.

PAL and NTSC are not the same as region-free operation

Region-free hardware can accept software from multiple regions without necessarily reproducing each region’s original video timing. The Analogue Nt FAQ illustrates this distinction: it describes the console as region free while using an NTSC 60 Hz PPU rather than a PAL 50 Hz PPU. That means region compatibility and PAL timing are separate questions.

For any FPGA console, ask two questions independently: can it run the software, and can its video output reproduce a timing that the display accepts? A positive answer to the first does not guarantee a positive answer to the second.

Direct Video troubleshooting

No image at all

  • Select the television’s actual input; do not assume it switched automatically.
  • Return to the last known-good MiSTer.ini and test HDMI if available.
  • Confirm that the HDMI-to-VGA adapter is a supported Direct Video adapter, not an arbitrary passive or incompatible converter.
  • Match vga_mode to the physical cable and input.
  • Check whether the display expects 15 kHz or 31 kHz and whether the active core produces that scan rate.

Image appears but colors are wrong

  • Verify that RGB, YPbPr, S-Video, or CVBS is selected consistently on both ends.
  • Check cable pinout and sync wiring.
  • For Direct Video, review adapter compatibility and HDMI color-range settings where applicable.
  • Do not use ntsc_mode to correct an RGB or component wiring error.

Picture rolls, tears, or loses lock

  • Check whether the core is outputting 50 Hz or 60 Hz and whether the CRT accepts that frequency.
  • Switch between the television’s supported scan modes only if the display documentation permits it.
  • Check composite_sync when the cable and display require composite sync on VGA HSync.
  • Test the MiSTer menu and a second core to determine whether the problem is global or core-specific.

Menu works but a game does not

  • The game core may select a different resolution or regional timing than the menu.
  • Read the core’s own video options and confirm whether it supports PAL, NTSC, or both.
  • Check the CRT’s tolerance for the core’s exact line and refresh timing.
  • Do not assume that changing menu_pal changes the game core.

Choosing between HDMI and analog

Priority Usually the better path Reason
Modern television with HDMI HDMI Fewest cable and sync variables.
Original-style CRT look with RGB SCART Analog RGB through the Analog I/O board or supported Direct Video hardware Can provide 15 kHz RGB when the board, cable, and CRT are compatible.
Component-only CRT or television YPbPr analog path Useful only when the hardware and cable explicitly support component output.
Legacy television with S-Video or composite S-Video or CVBS mode Works with the available input but requires careful standard and color-format matching.

HDMI is simpler for modern displays because the digital link carries a defined video mode. Analog output can better suit a CRT, but every part of the chain matters: board, adapter, mode, sync, cable, input, resolution, and refresh rate.

Buying checklist for an analog setup

  • Confirm the exact display input and whether it accepts 15 kHz, 31 kHz, 50 Hz, 60 Hz, or a combination.
  • Confirm that the MiSTer board or adapter supports the desired signal: RGB, YPbPr, S-Video, or CVBS.
  • Buy a VGA-to-RGB-SCART cable only when the wiring and sync arrangement match your MiSTer hardware and television.
  • Buy a VGA-to-component cable only when the hardware is documented to output YPbPr.
  • For Direct Video, verify the HDMI-to-VGA adapter chipset against the supported-adapter documentation.
  • Check whether the display needs separate sync, composite sync, or sync-on-green before selecting composite_sync.

These are conditional choices, not universal accessories. If the board revision, cable pinout, or display standard is unknown, identify those details first.

What owners of other FPGA consoles should do

The MiSTer settings above should not be copied blindly to another FPGA console. Manufacturers may implement PAL and NTSC as core options, firmware options, fixed hardware timing, or not at all. They may also use different analog boards, adapters, connector pinouts, and terminology.

Use the other console’s manual to verify:

  • which outputs are genuinely supported;
  • whether PAL and NTSC refer to software region, video timing, or both;
  • which adapters are approved for analog output;
  • which resolutions and scan rates the hardware can generate; and
  • whether the active core or firmware exposes a regional timing control.

The Analogue Nt example demonstrates why this check matters: its region-free behavior does not mean it generates PAL 50 Hz timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final setup sequence

  1. Identify the display connector and accepted scan rates.
  2. Choose HDMI, Analog I/O, or a supported Direct Video path.
  3. Use a cable whose wiring matches the selected signal.
  4. Set vga_mode to RGB, YPbPr, S-Video, or CVBS as appropriate.
  5. Use a compatible 15 kHz or scan-doubled mode for the display.
  6. Reserve ntsc_mode for S-Video and CVBS, and treat its values as standard selections rather than a universal PAL/NTSC switch.
  7. Use composite_sync only when the wiring needs it, and use menu_pal only to control menu timing.
  8. Test the menu, then test the target core and its regional video options.
  9. If the image fails, isolate input selection, mode, adapter, sync, cable, resolution, scan rate, and core timing one variable at a time.

The reliable method is to match the complete signal path rather than chase a PAL or NTSC label. Once the display accepts the core’s timing and the cable carries the signal selected in MiSTer, PAL and NTSC software can be evaluated on their actual compatibility instead of assumed from their region name.
