To start playing, identify the exact Evercade model, charge it, insert a compatible cartridge before powering on, and follow that model’s menu instructions. On the EXP family, hold the top power button for about two seconds, choose a game with Left or Right on the D-pad, press A, and select the Play icon. Firmware, Wi-Fi, charging and display-output details differ between the EXP-R, EXP, original Evercade Handheld and Super Pocket models.
Identify your Evercade model before doing anything else
Evercade is a platform rather than one identical handheld. The model name is printed on the device, its box or the supplied documentation. Use that name when opening support instructions: Blaze support covers Evercade devices, while HyperMegaTech! support covers Super Pocket models.

A menu path shown for the EXP may not appear on an EXP-R, and an EXP-R owner should not search for a video-output port that the product does not provide. Prepare the handheld and cartridge
Charge with model-appropriate equipment
Charge the unit before the first session so an update or game launch is not interrupted. The EXP-R product information lists a USB-C charging cable in the box, but it does not state a charger-output requirement. Do not automatically apply the EXP’s charger specification to an EXP-R.
The EXP FAQ specifies a 5V USB charger rated between 0.5A and 3A for the EXP. That figure belongs to the EXP guidance unless the documentation for another model says otherwise. If your model’s manual gives a different requirement, follow the manual.
For an EXP-R, the safest conclusion from the product information is simply that USB-C charging and a cable are supplied. If you need a separate power adapter, check the EXP-R documentation for its electrical requirements instead of buying one based on the EXP FAQ. This distinction matters because a familiar connector does not prove that every model has identical charging specifications.
Check the cartridge
Use an Evercade cartridge intended for a system supported by your model and current firmware. Look at the cartridge contacts before insertion. Dust, fibres or residue can prevent recognition, so handle the cartridge by its edges and do not force it into the slot. Insert it before switching the handheld on; this is the documented order for the EXP-family setup.
The colored case is a useful category clue, not a complete compatibility test. Red cases identify console collections, purple cases identify arcade collections and blue cases identify home-computer collections. Current support guidance says all three groups work across current Evercade systems running current firmware, but an older handheld or a specific cartridge can still require a model and firmware check.
Do not remove a cartridge while a game is saving. Finish the session using the game’s normal save and exit behaviour, then follow the handheld’s normal power procedure before moving the cartridge to another compatible device.
How to play a cartridge on an Evercade EXP-family handheld
These steps describe the documented EXP-family flow. Labels and button timing may differ on the EXP-R, original Handheld or Super Pocket, so stop and consult that model’s support instructions if your screen does not match.
- Insert the cartridge while the handheld is off. Make sure it is seated normally and that nothing obstructs the contacts.
- Power on. Hold the top power button for approximately two seconds. A brief press may not start the EXP-family device.
- Browse the game list. Use Left or Right on the D-pad to move through the available games.
- Open a game’s menu. Press A when the game you want is highlighted.
- Launch the game. Press A on the Play icon. The game should begin from its normal title screen.
- Resume a previous session when offered. The EXP FAQ documents a Last Save option. Choose it when you want to continue an existing cartridge save rather than start from the beginning.
If the game list is empty or the cartridge is missing, do not repeatedly press buttons or force the cartridge. Use the recognition checks in the troubleshooting section below.

The order is intentional: cartridge first, power second, selection third. Starting without the cartridge and inserting it after the menu has loaded can make diagnosis harder, especially if you are trying to determine whether the contacts, firmware or slot caused the problem. If your screen uses different labels, do not keep pressing A at random; switch to the support instructions for the exact model.
Update firmware and connect to Wi-Fi
Firmware can affect cartridge recognition and save compatibility, so update the handheld when the model’s support instructions recommend it. Menu wording is not identical in every reference: the EXP FAQ describes Settings → System → Check for Update, while another current-device support reference describes Settings → System → Install Update. Follow the wording shown on your device and use the support page for your exact model.
Updating is particularly relevant when a cartridge is known to work on a current Evercade system but is not detected on an older device. It is also relevant when moving saves between an original Evercade Handheld and an EXP: the EXP FAQ specifies firmware 2.0 or higher on the original Handheld for save compatibility.
Wi-Fi requirements for current devices
The current-device support guidance describes secure 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi support. It does not support 5 GHz-only networks or open, unsecured networks. If an update cannot find your router, enable a secured 2.4 GHz network or a dual-band network that offers 2.4 GHz, then retry from the system settings.
Keep the handheld charged during an update and avoid removing the cartridge or switching the device off while installation is in progress. If the update menu reports an error, record the exact message, restart the handheld, reconnect to a secured 2.4 GHz network and try again. Persistent failures should go to the support channel for the model rather than to generic EXP instructions.
Do not assume that every Wi-Fi menu has the same wording or that a visible network is suitable. A router broadcasting only 5 GHz, or a network that requires an open login page, does not meet the cited current-device requirements. A secured dual-band network with 2.4 GHz enabled is the practical configuration to try first.
Which Evercade cartridges work?
Evercade support groups cartridges by case color. The color indicates the broad game category, not a different physical connector.

The support reference says all three color groups work across current Evercade systems when those systems are running the latest firmware. That does not remove the need to check model-specific support when an older handheld or a particular cartridge is not recognized. Cartridge compatibility is therefore a combination of the cartridge, the device model and its firmware, not color alone.

When buying an additional collection, match the cartridge to the device support information and the games you actually want to play. A cartridge is a physical product, so the game collection is not automatically present on a handheld that did not include it. Bundle contents can also vary by version and retailer, so check the exact listing rather than assuming a particular collection is included.
How saves travel between devices
Saves are stored on the cartridge rather than solely in the handheld. After saving and ending a session, place the cartridge in another compatible device and use its resume or load option. The save should travel with the cartridge. For the original Evercade Handheld and the EXP, the EXP FAQ specifies firmware 2.0 or higher on the original Handheld for save compatibility.
A save created on one model should not be treated as proof that every model supports it. Update both devices where appropriate and check the model-specific compatibility guidance before moving an important save.

Switch devices only after the game has completed its save process and you have exited normally. If the second device does not offer the expected resume option, confirm its model and firmware before assuming that the save has disappeared.
What to do when a cartridge is not recognized
Start with the physical connection
- Turn the handheld off using its normal power control.
- Remove the cartridge and inspect its contacts for visible debris.
- Clean away loose debris without scraping the contacts or applying liquid.
- Reinsert the cartridge fully and restart with it already inserted.
This sequence addresses the most common recognition causes without changing software settings. If the device has two cartridge slots, support guidance suggests trying the other slot. Do not look for a second slot on a single-cartridge handheld; that step applies only to hardware that actually has two.
Separate a cartridge problem from a firmware problem
If the cartridge still does not appear, confirm that the handheld is on current firmware using its model-specific update menu. A cartridge that works on one current device but not another may indicate an older firmware level or a model-specific compatibility limitation. Test only with cartridges you are entitled to use and avoid repeatedly inserting a visibly damaged cartridge.
A useful comparison is to test one known-working cartridge, if you have one, and then test the problem cartridge again after the restart and firmware check. If several cartridges fail in the same slot, the handheld or slot becomes more likely to need support. If only one cartridge fails while others launch, give support the cartridge title and describe its physical condition.

When to contact support
Contact the appropriate Blaze or HyperMegaTech! support channel when cleaning, reinsertion, a restart and a firmware check do not resolve the problem. Include the exact handheld model, firmware version if visible, cartridge title, whether other cartridges work and whether the game list changes after reinsertion. Those details help support distinguish a slot, cartridge or software issue.

The 3,000mAh figure and estimated four-to-five-hour play time describe the EXP-R product, not every Evercade handheld. Runtime can vary with game load, sound, brightness and wireless activity, so plan a charge before a long session rather than treating the estimate as a guaranteed minimum.

TV and monitor expectations

This is a hardware distinction, not a firmware setting that can be enabled later. If external-screen play is important, identify the model first and check its documented connections. An EXP owner may have TV-output guidance, while an EXP-R owner should plan to use the 4.3-inch handheld display.

Once a cartridge launches successfully, establish a simple routine:
- Keep the handheld charged before installing firmware or beginning a long session.
- Use only the model’s documented charger guidance; do not copy EXP electrical requirements to another model without confirmation.
- Save in the game before ending the session so the cartridge contains the latest progress.
- Leave the cartridge in place during startup when using the EXP-family sequence.
- Update firmware when the device offers an update or when a cartridge-support notice requires it.
- Remember that a cartridge save can move between compatible devices, but compatibility still depends on model and firmware.
Keep the cartridge and handheld together when troubleshooting. Note which cartridges launch, which do not, and whether the failure changes after a firmware update. That record is more useful to support than a general report that “games do not work,” because it separates a single-cartridge issue from a slot or software issue.

Saves are stored on the cartridge, so they can move between compatible devices. The EXP FAQ requires the original Evercade Handheld to run firmware 2.0 or later for save compatibility with the EXP.
Why is my Evercade cartridge not showing up?
