To host Enigmatica 4, use its archived 1.14.4 dedicated-server pack, install 64-bit Java 8, extract the files into a separate local folder, run the supplied start script, accept the EULA, and configure your firewall or router only if players will connect from outside your home network.

Know which Enigmatica 4 release you are installing

Enigmatica 4 targets Minecraft 1.14.4 and is no longer in active development. The dedicated server package covered here is Enigmatica4Server-0.5.5.zip, a 131.0 MB download uploaded on May 23, 2020. It uses Forge 1.14.4-28.2.16. Because the pack is archived, every player must use a client installation that matches the server pack and Minecraft version; mixing a newer Enigmatica release with this server will not produce a supported setup.

The Enigmatica project page now points readers toward newer packs such as Enigmatica 5 or Enigmatica 6 for actively developed gameplay. That does not prevent Enigmatica 4 from running, but it does mean you should keep an install backup, expect older mod dependencies, and verify that any host you choose still supports a 1.14.4 Forge server.

Requirements before you begin

Use 64-bit Java 8

Enigmatica’s Java guidance specifies 64-bit Java for all of its modpacks. Since Enigmatica 4 is based on Minecraft 1.14.4, install a Java 8 runtime, preferably the Temurin 8 distribution. Do not assume that a current Java 17 or Java 21 installation will work simply because it runs newer Minecraft versions.

  • Windows: install the 64-bit Temurin 8 build from Adoptium, then open Command Prompt and run java -version to confirm that the expected Java 8 runtime is on your PATH.
  • Ubuntu or Debian: run sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jre, then verify it with java -version.
  • macOS and other Linux distributions: install a 64-bit Temurin 8 package for your operating system and verify the selected runtime before launching the server script.

If the command reports a different major version, correct the system PATH or call the Java 8 executable explicitly before troubleshooting the modpack. A server that starts with the wrong Java release can fail during Forge loading, stop before creating its files, or produce misleading mod errors.

Allocate enough memory

CurseForge advises at least 4 GB of RAM for Enigmatica 4. Enigmatica’s server guide describes 4–8 GB as the usual range and warns that modded servers need substantially more memory than vanilla Minecraft. Treat 4 GB as a starting point, not a guarantee for every world or group size. Leave memory for the operating system and other services; assigning all physical RAM to Java can make the host less stable.

The official guidance also recommends not running the server on the same computer that you use to play. If you do combine both workloads, watch for operating-system swapping, long pauses during chunk generation, and slow saves rather than judging capacity by the amount of free RAM immediately after startup. No official player-capacity benchmark is published for this pack, so choose memory from observed usage and your world rather than a claimed maximum player count.

Choose a safe installation location

Create an empty folder on a local drive dedicated to the server. Do not extract the pack inside OneDrive or another synchronized folder: file-locking and synchronization conflicts can interrupt Forge’s installer or corrupt files while the server is writing. Use a path that your account can read and write without repeated administrator prompts, and keep a separate location available for backups.

Install the dedicated server files

  1. Download the server pack. Open the Enigmatica 4 project on CurseForge and download the dedicated server file named Enigmatica4Server-0.5.5.zip. Confirm that the file is the server package, not the client modpack.
  2. Extract it into the empty local folder. The ZIP should be unpacked as its own server directory. Avoid nesting the files several levels deep in a synchronized or protected location, because the start scripts and generated paths must remain together.
  3. Launch the installer script. On Windows, double-click start-server.bat. On macOS or Linux, run start-server.sh from a terminal; if the shell refuses to execute it, grant execute permission with chmod +x start-server.sh and run it again.
  4. Wait for the first installation to finish. Forge and the modpack files must be installed before a normal server startup is possible. Keep the console open and allow the script to complete rather than closing the window when it appears idle.
  5. Accept the EULA. When the console asks for agreement, enter TRUE exactly as requested and press Enter. The server cannot continue until the generated EULA file records acceptance.
  6. Complete the documented first-start workaround. After the server has fully started, stop or close it cleanly. Run the same start script a second time. Enigmatica’s installation guide documents this second launch as a workaround for first-start console input and initialization behavior.

On the successful second launch, leave the console running while you test a local connection. Stopping the process by closing its window or killing Java can leave region data unwritten; use the server’s normal stop command when it is available in the console.

Set memory and basic server options

The supplied start script is the supported launch point. If its configuration exposes minimum and maximum heap settings, set them within the 4–8 GB range appropriate for your machine and keep the values consistent with the RAM you actually have. Do not copy a memory value from a different modpack or assign more RAM than the host can reserve. Restart the server after changing launch settings and confirm in the startup log that Java starts normally.

Most gameplay settings are stored in the generated server files after the first run. Change one setting at a time, stop the server before editing files, and retain a copy of the original so you can undo a bad value. Keep the server and every player’s client on the same Enigmatica 4 release; a server update is not complete if only the host’s files have changed.

Let friends connect over a network

Test on the local network first

Start with a player on the same home network. Give that player the host computer’s private LAN address and the server port. A local test separates modpack or Java problems from internet routing problems: if a local player cannot connect, fix the server installation before changing router settings.

Allow the Java process through the host firewall

When the operating system asks whether Java may communicate on a network, allow the server process on the appropriate private network profile. If you previously denied it, create a firewall rule for the Java runtime used by the server and permit the server’s listening traffic. Use the host’s own firewall controls; do not disable the firewall globally as a troubleshooting shortcut.

Forward the default Minecraft port when needed

Minecraft Java Edition normally uses port 25565. Players outside your home network may require a router port-forwarding rule that sends TCP traffic on that external port to the host computer’s private address. The exact screens differ by router, but the rule needs the correct internal address and the port on which the server is listening. Reserve the host’s LAN address in the router or configure a static address so the forwarding target does not change after a reboot.

Give remote players your current public address and the port if it is not the default. Do not post that address publicly, and do not expose administrative services that the server does not require. Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT; in that case, a normal inbound forwarding rule may not work and you will need a provider-supported public address or a managed hosting arrangement.

Match the client installation

Every connecting player should install the Enigmatica 4 client for the same Minecraft 1.14.4 pack release as the server, use 64-bit Java 8, and launch with the same mod configuration. A missing mod, different Forge build, or changed configuration can appear as a network disconnect even when port forwarding is correct. Test with one fully matched client before inviting the whole group.

Operate the server safely

Use an orderly shutdown

Stop the server from its console rather than terminating the Java process. An orderly shutdown flushes world data and reduces the chance of region or player-file corruption. If the host loses power, make a recovery backup before starting again and inspect the console for errors.

Back up the world and configuration

Before experimenting with mods, changing Java, or applying an update, stop the server and copy the world directory to a dated backup location. For a more complete recovery point, copy the entire server directory, including configuration, scripts, and generated files, while the server is stopped. Keep at least one backup away from the live folder so a disk or synchronization failure does not destroy both copies.

Monitor symptoms instead of guessing

  • Long pauses or out-of-memory errors: check the heap allocation and available host RAM before adding more mods or players.
  • Forge or mod loading errors: verify Java 8, the 1.14.4 Forge build, and that the server pack was extracted completely.
  • World saves that take unusually long: stop other disk-intensive applications and confirm the server folder is not being synchronized or scanned aggressively.
  • Clients rejected during login: compare the exact client pack, Forge version, and configuration with the server.

Update Enigmatica 4 without losing the world

Updates are the highest-risk maintenance task. The 0.5.5 release notes warn that updates can affect existing worlds and may remove blocks when a world comes from an older release. A backup is mandatory; never test an update only on the sole copy of a shared world.

  1. Record the current state. Note the server-pack version, Forge version, Java version, and any custom configuration. Ask players to leave the server, then stop it cleanly.
  2. Make a restorable backup. Copy the world and the complete server directory to a separate, dated location. Do not overwrite the previous backup until the updated world has loaded and been checked.
  3. Obtain the new dedicated server package. Follow the official Enigmatica installation process for that release in a fresh or cleaned server folder. This avoids carrying obsolete installer artifacts into the new environment.
  4. Preserve the existing world. Copy the backed-up world into the location expected by the new installation only after the new server files have been generated. Keep the original backup untouched.
  5. For a hosted-server replacement, update the required pack folders. The Enigmatica server guide specifically identifies configs, defaultconfigs, kubejs, libraries, mods, and patchouli_books among the folders that may need replacement. It also notes that old setup files may need to be removed. Follow the release’s instructions rather than deleting files indiscriminately.
  6. Start and inspect before inviting players. Watch for missing registry entries, removed blocks, or repeated errors. Join with a test account, visit several important areas, and confirm that inventories, machines, quests, and player data are present.

If the updated world is damaged or content is missing, stop immediately and restore the untouched backup. Do not continue playing on a suspect conversion and then overwrite the backup with that state.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Self-hosting gives you direct access to every file and avoids a recurring hosting bill, but you provide the hardware, backups, router configuration, uptime, and recovery work. A managed host can simplify networking and provide a control panel, scheduled backups, and support, but you must verify that it still accepts an archived Minecraft 1.14.4 Forge pack and permits the files that Enigmatica’s update process requires.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Consideration Self-hosted server Managed server
Upfront and monthly cost No provider fee, but you supply a capable computer, storage, electricity, and internet service. Recurring rental cost; current plan prices are not stated here and must be checked with the provider.
RAM and CPU You choose hardware and reserve 4–8 GB of RAM for the server while leaving headroom for the operating system. You select an allocation; confirm that the plan provides at least the pack’s 4 GB minimum and enough CPU for Forge startup.
Setup effort You install Java, run the scripts, configure the firewall, and handle router forwarding. The panel may automate Java and networking, but you still need to upload or select the correct 1.14.4 server files.
File and mod control Full access to scripts, configs, mods, worlds, and backups. Control depends on the panel and file access; confirm that folders such as kubejs and patchouli_books can be managed.
Backups and updates You schedule and test backups and perform the documented replacement procedure yourself. Backups or update tools may be included, but you remain responsible for world compatibility and should keep an independent copy.
Network exposure and reliability Your home IP, router, firewall, power, and internet connection affect availability. The provider handles the public network endpoint and data-center power, subject to its uptime and support terms.
Archived-pack support You can preserve the exact 0.5.5 files as long as your hardware runs Java 8. Ask specifically whether archived 1.14.4 Forge servers are supported before paying; newer panels may target current Minecraft releases only.

Troubleshooting checklist

The start script closes immediately

Run the script from a terminal so the error remains visible. Check that the folder is writable, Java 8 is installed and selected, and the ZIP was extracted fully. A synced folder, an incomplete extraction, or a Java PATH pointing to a newer release can all prevent the installer from finishing.

The server asks for the EULA repeatedly

Enter TRUE when prompted, then allow the script to finish writing the EULA file. If the prompt returns every time, verify that the account has write permission and that security or synchronization software is not restoring the file.

Friends cannot join, but local play works

Recheck the host firewall, the router’s 25565 forwarding target, and the host’s current private address. Make sure remote players use the public address rather than the LAN address. If forwarding is correct but inbound traffic never reaches the server, investigate carrier-grade NAT with the internet provider or use a managed host.

The world loads with missing blocks after an update

Stop the server and restore the pre-update backup. The release notes explicitly warn that older-world updates can remove blocks. Do not treat a successful server boot as proof that every existing chunk and machine is compatible.
