An axolotl tank should be a fully aquatic, species-only aquarium with cool, stable water, gentle circulation, a safe substrate and at least one reliably dark retreat. Keep the water at 15–18°C (59–64°F), never allow it to exceed 22°C (72°F), and avoid bright aquarium lighting unless plants genuinely require it. A dimmable, low-output LED and broad plants or smooth caves can provide visibility without taking away the shaded areas axolotls need.
Set up and fully cycle the aquarium before the axolotl arrives. Use conditioned water, test the water and temperature through a complete day-night cycle, and remove gravel or small stones that could be swallowed. The size guidance is not expressed as one universal standard: Royal Veterinary Center recommends 75–110 litres (20–30 gallons) for one adult, while New South Wales Department of Education guidance gives a minimum 60 × 30 × 30 cm space for a pair and a water depth of 20–25 cm. Treat those figures as source-specific baselines, then prioritize usable floor area, stable cooling and safe furnishings.
What an axolotl tank must provide
Axolotls spend their lives in water, so the enclosure is a fully aquatic aquarium rather than a terrarium with a shallow dish. Keep only axolotls in the setup unless you have a separate, species-appropriate plan; a species-only aquarium makes feeding, injury checks and water-quality management more predictable.

- Cool, stable water: 15–18°C is the optimum range in current New South Wales Department of Education guidance. Water must never exceed 22°C. Zoo Med lists 60–64°F (about 15.5–17.8°C) as its recommended range and says not to exceed 72°F (about 22°C).
- Aquarium volume and floor area appropriate to the animal. Royal Veterinary Center recommends 75–110 L (20–30 gal) for one adult. New South Wales guidance specifies at least 60 × 30 × 30 cm for a pair and 20–25 cm of water depth.
- Conditioned water with pH maintained between 6.5 and 8.0.
- Gentle filtration and circulation. Rapid flow can stress an axolotl.
- A bare bottom or fine aquarium sand, never gravel or small stones that can be swallowed.
- Smooth, stable hiding places that remain shaded when the room or aquarium is lit.
- A fully completed nitrogen cycle before the animal is introduced.
These requirements work together. A large aquarium that overheats, has a strong current or offers no dark retreat is not a safe setup; neither is a cool tank containing an ingestion hazard.

Choose the aquarium and its location
Size and shape
Choose a long aquarium with generous floor area rather than a tall, narrow model. Axolotls spend much of their time on or close to the bottom, so horizontal space is more useful than extra height.
| Guidance | What it says | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Veterinary Center | 75–110 L (20–30 gal) for one adult | Use this as a veterinary recommendation for a single adult, with the larger end giving more usable floor area and more stable water conditions. |
| New South Wales Department of Education | Minimum 60 × 30 × 30 cm space for a pair; water depth 20–25 cm | Treat this as government guidance for the stated pair setup. Do not assume it replaces the larger single-adult recommendation in every situation. |
The two published figures are not a single universally accepted tank-size law. They describe different source recommendations, so record which guidance you are following and leave room for the animal to turn, rest and reach a hide without being forced into the filter intake or décor.
Pick a cool, stable position
Place the aquarium in the coolest practical room, away from direct sunlight. Sun through a window can raise water temperature quickly and can also create intense, uncontrolled light. Keep the tank away from radiators, heat-producing appliances and vents that cause repeated temperature swings.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchBefore filling the aquarium, confirm that the stand is designed for the fully filled tank and that the floor is level. Leave access around the filter, thermometer and any cooling equipment. Do not put the aquarium where a fan or chiller exhaust would be blocked; cooling equipment needs to release heat somewhere that will not warm the room or blow debris into the water.
Equipment checklist
Gather the equipment before adding water so the tank can be assembled and tested without rushing:
- A long aquarium sized for the axolotl and the chosen source guidance.
- A level, load-rated stand.
- A low-flow filter whose outlet can be redirected, baffled or otherwise adjusted so it does not create a rapid current.
- A reliable aquarium thermometer that can be read without disturbing the animal.
- Water conditioner suitable for the source water.
- A test kit for pH and the nitrogen-cycle parameters required by the kit manufacturer.
- Bare-bottom material or fine aquarium sand; no gravel or small stones.
- At least one smooth, stable cave, PVC pipe or broad plant arrangement that creates a dark retreat.
- A dimmable, low-output LED only if plants need supplemental light.
- A siphon or other tool for removing solid waste and changing part of the water.
- A fan, aquarium chiller or access to a cooler room if the room cannot hold the target temperature.
Prepare a safe bottom and décor
Substrate choices
A bare bottom is the simplest option to inspect and clean. Fine aquarium sand can also be used when it is genuinely fine, well rinsed and free of sharp particles. The key safety rule is to avoid gravel and small stones. Veterinary guidance from Royal Veterinary Center and VCA warns that axolotls can swallow them and develop an impaction.
Do not rely on an animal being too large or too careful to ingest a stone. Axolotls feed from the bottom and can take in substrate along with food. If you cannot confidently identify a material as safe and appropriately fine, leave it out.

Build hiding places
Use smooth aquarium-safe caves, sections of PVC pipe, broad-leaved plants or a rocky overhang that has been made stable and free of sharp edges. A hide should be large enough for the axolotl to enter and turn without scraping its body, but not so oversized that it provides no sense of shelter.
There is no published universal statistic for the number of hides required per axolotl. Instead, arrange enough shaded retreats that the animal can leave any lit area comfortably. In a long tank, placing a retreat toward each end can prevent the axolotl from having to cross an exposed, brightly lit area to find cover; this is a layout recommendation, not a prescribed hide count.
Before adding any object, check every edge and opening:
- Run a finger over seams and corners to find sharp points.
- Remove or smooth rough ceramic, plastic or rock surfaces.
- Make sure a cave cannot roll, collapse or trap the axolotl against the glass.
- Check that openings are wide enough for the animal to pass without wedging.
- Keep décor away from the filter intake so a resting animal cannot be pinned against it.
Install filtration without creating a current
Filtration keeps water moving through biological media and removes suspended waste, but axolotls are stressed by rapid flow. Choose a filter that can be adjusted to a gentle output. Aim the outlet at the glass, use a flow diffuser or baffle where appropriate, and observe the water surface and the axolotl’s resting area after installation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Signs that flow is too strong include an axolotl repeatedly struggling to hold position, avoiding part of the tank because of the current, or having its gills and body constantly pushed by moving water. Lower the output, redirect the outlet or add a suitable diffuser rather than accepting persistent turbulence.
Keep the intake guarded and positioned so it cannot draw the axolotl against the grate. Do not compensate for an undersized or poorly placed filter by increasing flow to an uncomfortable level; select equipment that can provide filtration while remaining gentle.
Fill, condition and cycle the aquarium
Condition the water
Fill the aquarium with water treated by a suitable conditioner. Maintain pH between 6.5 and 8.0, and match the temperature of replacement water to the aquarium as closely as practical. Sudden temperature differences during a water change add avoidable stress.

Complete the nitrogen cycle before stocking
A new aquarium must be fully cycled before the axolotl is introduced. Cycling establishes the biological processes that handle animal waste; simply filling the tank, running a filter for a short time or adding conditioner does not prove that the process is complete.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Set up the aquarium, substrate, filter, thermometer and décor exactly as they will be used.
- Add conditioned water and run the filter continuously.
- Provide the ammonia source required by the cycling method you are using, following the product or test-kit directions.
- Test the water at the intervals specified by the kit. Track the readings rather than relying on clear-looking water.
- Continue the process until the test results demonstrate a completed cycle according to the method and kit instructions.
- Test again through a full day-night cycle, confirming that temperature and pH remain suitable and stable.
Do not place the axolotl in the tank merely because the water looks clear. If the cycle is incomplete, continue cycling and use conditioned water for any necessary changes.
Control temperature before adding the axolotl
Target range
Keep the aquarium at 15–18°C (approximately 59–64°F). Zoo Med’s 60–64°F recommendation overlaps this range. Water must never exceed 22°C (approximately 72°F), a limit stated by both the New South Wales guidance and Zoo Med’s care information.
| Temperature condition | Response |
|---|---|
| 15–18°C | Target operating range identified in current New South Wales guidance. |
| About 60–64°F | Zoo Med’s recommended range; equivalent to roughly 15.5–17.8°C. |
| Approaching 22°C | Begin active cooling and investigate the heat source immediately. |
| Above 22°C | Unsafe limit stated by the cited guidance; move the aquarium to a cooler environment and use appropriate cooling equipment. |
Cooling methods
Start with the room: close blinds against direct sun, move the aquarium away from heat sources and improve room cooling. A fan can help evaporative cooling, while a dedicated aquarium chiller provides more controlled cooling when the room remains warm. A cooler room may be sufficient if it can hold the target range consistently.
Use a thermometer as an essential monitoring tool. Check the reading at different times, including after the room has warmed and after lights have been on. A tank that is acceptable in the morning but exceeds the limit each afternoon is not temperature-stable.

Do not cool the tank by adding unconditioned cold water or ice directly around the animal. Any intervention should preserve conditioned water quality and avoid abrupt temperature changes.
Use lighting that respects axolotl behavior
When no aquarium lamp is best
Axolotls prefer dim conditions. New South Wales guidance says normal indoor lighting, without aquarium lights, is sufficient. If the room provides enough visibility for maintenance and the plants do not require supplemental light, omit the aquarium lamp.

If plants need a lamp
Choose the lowest practical intensity and use a dimmable LED. Keep a normal day/night cycle rather than leaving the lamp on continuously. Position broad plants, caves or an overhang so a shaded retreat is available whenever the lamp is on.
Zoo Med’s axolotl care guidance states: “Always provide hiding places for your axolotl to retreat from light if desired.” Treat that as a basic layout requirement, not an optional accessory. A lamp should illuminate the room or plants without eliminating every dark area in the tank.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLighting troubleshooting
- The axolotl avoids the open area: Dim the lamp and increase shaded cover before changing the animal’s location.
- The tank is bright from a nearby window: Block direct sun or move the aquarium; window light is not a controllable aquarium schedule.
- Plants are failing under low light: Increase plant-appropriate light only in small steps, retain a dark retreat and monitor temperature because lamps can add heat.
- The lamp warms the water: Reduce intensity or duration, improve room cooling and consider a different low-output fixture.
Step-by-step assembly
- Select the location. Choose a cool position away from direct sun and heat sources, verify the stand and leave service access.
- Clean and inspect the aquarium. Remove manufacturing residue with water only; do not leave household-cleaner residue inside the tank.
- Add the safe bottom. Use a bare bottom or prepared fine aquarium sand. Exclude gravel and small stones.
- Place décor before filling. Set caves, pipes, plants and overhangs on stable surfaces. Test that nothing rocks, tips or has a sharp edge.
- Install the filter and thermometer. Position the intake safely and set the outlet for gentle circulation.
- Fill with conditioned water. Keep replacement and aquarium water at closely matching temperatures.
- Set up cooling. Run the thermometer through warm and cool parts of the day. Add a fan, chiller or room cooling if the target cannot be maintained.
- Cycle the aquarium completely. Run the filter, follow the cycling method and verify the test results before stocking.
- Set the lighting. Omit the lamp if normal indoor light is adequate. Otherwise use a dimmable, low-output LED on a normal day/night schedule.
- Recheck access to shade. Confirm that the axolotl can reach a dark retreat without crossing an exposed, high-flow area.
- Test a full day-night cycle. Record temperature, pH and the required cycle parameters at different times before introducing the animal.
- Introduce the axolotl only after the checks pass. Keep observing the current, temperature and access to the hide during the first period of occupancy.
Maintenance that preserves the setup
Routine observations
- Read the thermometer and look for a rising afternoon temperature.
- Check that the filter is running gently and that the intake is not obstructed.
- Confirm that the axolotl can enter and leave a shaded retreat.
- Remove solid waste promptly with a siphon or suitable tool.
- Inspect décor for movement, damage or a newly exposed sharp edge.
Partial water changes
Perform regular partial water changes with conditioned water at the same temperature as the aquarium. Remove waste first, then replace only part of the water so the biological system and the animal are not subjected to an abrupt full reset. Use the water-change schedule appropriate to the tank’s waste production and test results rather than waiting for the water to look dirty.
When changing water, avoid stirring sand into the filter, exposing the axolotl to a strong siphon or placing cold, untreated water directly into the tank. Recheck temperature and pH after the change.
Cleaning without destroying the cycle
Remove visible waste and clean surfaces as needed, but do not replace or sterilize all biological filter media at once. If filter media requires cleaning, use a method compatible with the filter and preserve the established biological material. Never use household disinfectants inside the aquarium.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which setup configuration is most practical?
The following comparison uses the decision factors that matter most: temperature stability, usable floor area, flow, substrate safety, shaded coverage, lighting control and maintenance.
| Configuration | Temperature stability | Substrate safety | Hide and lighting strategy | Maintenance trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bare-bottom, long aquarium | Depends on room and cooling equipment; open water is easy to monitor. | Highest ingestion safety because there is no loose substrate. | Add smooth caves or pipes and keep lighting dim or absent. | Waste is easy to see and remove, but the bottom may look less natural. |
| Fine-sand, long aquarium | Depends on the same cooling controls as any other setup. | Use only genuinely fine aquarium sand; never substitute gravel or small stones. | Broad plants and caves can create shaded areas; low-output lighting may be used for plants. | Waste removal requires careful siphoning so sand is not continuously removed. |
| Low-light planted layout | Monitor lamps and room heat because lighting can raise water temperature. | Choose bare bottom or safe fine sand beneath the plants. | Plants can provide shade, but retain a dependable cave or pipe in case foliage thins. | Requires plant trimming and controlled lighting in addition to normal aquarium care. |
No configuration removes the need for cool water, gentle filtration, a fully cycled aquarium and safe hiding places. Choose the arrangement you can inspect and maintain consistently.

Common setup failures and fixes
The water is too warm
Move the aquarium out of sun, reduce heat from the lamp, cool the room and use a fan or chiller if necessary. Measure again during the warmest part of the day. Do not treat a brief morning reading as proof that the tank stays within range.
The filter creates a strong current
Redirect the outlet toward the glass, reduce the adjustable flow or add a suitable diffuser. If the filter cannot operate gently, replace it with equipment better matched to the aquarium. The correct solution is lower turbulence, not forcing the axolotl to tolerate it.
Small stones or gravel were added
Remove them and replace them with a bare bottom or safe fine aquarium sand. Axolotls can swallow these materials and suffer impaction, so waiting to see whether the animal eats them is not a safe test.
Recommended Free Tools
There is no genuinely dark retreat
Dim or remove the aquarium lamp and add a smooth cave, pipe, broad plant group or stable overhang. Recheck the route to the hide; a retreat that is blocked by strong flow or unstable décor does not solve the problem.
The tank was stocked before cycling finished
Stop treating clear water as evidence of readiness. Test the cycle parameters, remove waste, perform conditioned partial water changes as indicated by the results and continue monitoring until the cycle is demonstrated complete. Do not add another animal while the system is unstable.
The pH is outside the stated range
Test again with a reliable method and check the source water. Make gradual, controlled corrections rather than making a large untreated-water change. Keep the aquarium between pH 6.5 and 8.0 and continue checking after maintenance.
