For the manual AT-LP120XUSB, the safe sequence is: level the turntable, balance the tonearm so it floats, zero the tracking-force ring, set the cartridge’s specified tracking force (2.0 g for the supplied cartridge), then set anti-skate to the same value. Those numbers and steps are not universal to every Audio-Technica model: automatic decks and different cartridges can require different procedures and force ranges, so confirm your exact manual and cartridge specification first.
Before you adjust anything
Tonearm setup has two separate jobs. Balancing establishes a neutral reference in which the arm floats horizontally with no tracking force applied. Tracking-force adjustment then applies the downward force specified for the installed cartridge. Confusing those stages is the most common setup error.
Audio-Technica states in the AT-LP120XUSB User Manual: “In order for the cartridge to pick up sound correctly from the record’s grooves, the tonearm’s balance and tracking force must be adjusted to fit the specifications of the cartridge.” The statement applies the principle broadly, but the numerical setting belongs to the particular cartridge, not to the Audio-Technica name alone.
Identify the exact turntable and cartridge
- Read the model label on the plinth or rear panel. AT-LP120XUSB, AT-LP120XBT-USB, AT-LP3XBT and AT-LP7X do not have identical feature sets or supplied cartridges.
- Find the cartridge name printed on the cartridge body, its box or the turntable documentation. A replacement cartridge or headshell changes the correct tracking-force range.
- Use the manual for your model and the cartridge maker’s specification before turning a counterweight. If either document gives a range, choose a value within that range according to the cartridge documentation; do not substitute a number from another model.
- Check whether the deck is manual or automatic. An automatic arm may use a different cueing and balance procedure, and some models do not expose the same counterweight or anti-skate controls.
What you need
You do not need a replacement stylus or a new turntable to complete this adjustment. You need the turntable’s manual, the cartridge specification, a stable surface and enough light to see the tonearm centerline and gauge-ring markings. The AT-LP120XUSB manual says a separate level may be used as needed to verify that the deck is level. If you are shopping for a deck rather than setting up one you already own, the AT-LP120XUSB is one manual-turntable option, but buying it is not required for the procedure.

Protect the stylus and records
Work with the platter stopped and a clean, stable surface. Keep the stylus protector installed until the manual tells you to remove it for balancing. During the floating-arm step, hold the headshell gently so the arm cannot swing down. Never allow the stylus to scrape across a record, the platter mat or the bare platter. Incorrect balance or tracking force can damage the stylus or record.
AT-LP120XUSB: the complete balancing procedure
The following sequence is the one documented for the manual Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB. The AT-LP120XBT-USB manual repeats the same core process, but use the manual supplied with your own unit if controls or cartridge details differ.
1. Put the turntable in its final position and level it
Place the turntable on its intended shelf or stand before making adjustments. It should not rock when you press lightly on a corner. The AT-LP120XUSB manual says to use a level, sold separately as needed, to ensure the turntable is level. Leveling first prevents the arm from appearing to float correctly when the whole chassis is tilted.

Fit the platter, mat and any other parts that are meant to remain installed during operation. Remove packing material according to the model manual. Do not try to compensate for a sloping shelf by changing the counterweight; the counterweight sets arm balance, not the orientation of the turntable.
2. Prepare the arm without exposing the stylus to a sudden drop
Leave the stylus protector on while you release the arm from its rest. Hold the headshell with one hand so the arm cannot move abruptly, then release the tonearm clamp. Remove the protector only when you are ready to observe the arm during the balancing step, following the manual’s direction.
Keep your fingers away from the cantilever and stylus tip. Support the headshell rather than pressing on the cartridge body. If the arm tries to fall, catch it with the headshell and return it to the rest before continuing.
3. Float the arm horizontally
Turn the counterweight on the rear of the tonearm until the arm floats horizontally when you release the headshell. Make small turns and pause after each one. The arm should remain level, with the stylus suspended above the platter; it must not touch or scrape the record, mat or platter.

This is the balance point, not a 2.0 g setting and not a measurement of the cartridge’s final force. When the arm floats, return it to the arm rest and secure the tonearm clamp before handling the gauge ring.
4. Zero the tracking-force gauge ring
Support the counterweight so it cannot rotate. Turn only the numbered tracking-force gauge ring until its zero mark aligns with the tonearm’s centerline. The AT-LP120XUSB manual specifically warns that rotating the ring by itself does not apply tracking force; it only establishes the zero reference after the arm has been balanced.
If the arm was not truly floating when you zeroed the ring, the scale will be offset. Repeat the floating step rather than trying to correct the error by guessing at a number.
5. Apply the cartridge’s specified tracking force
Now turn the counterweight and gauge ring together until the desired value aligns with the tonearm centerline. For the cartridge supplied with the AT-LP120XUSB, Audio-Technica’s manual states a standard tracking force of 2.0 g. That is a model-and-cartridge-specific specification, not a universal Audio-Technica setting.
Use the cartridge documentation when you have installed a different cartridge. If it specifies 1.8–2.2 g, for example, the usable range is that cartridge’s range; do not automatically select 2.0 g because another turntable used it. Keep the force within the stated range and record the value in your setup notes so you can restore it after transport or cartridge changes.
6. Set anti-skate on the AT-LP120XUSB
Set the AT-LP120XUSB anti-skate dial to the same number as the tracking force, as its manual instructs. With the supplied cartridge at 2.0 g, set anti-skate to 2. This matching rule is the manufacturer’s instruction for the cited model; other turntables may provide a different control, a different scale or no user adjustment at all.
Do not use anti-skate to compensate for an incorrectly balanced arm. Rebalance and re-zero first whenever the cartridge, headshell or counterweight position changes.

7. Return the arm to its rest and perform a visual check
- Confirm that the tracking-force ring and counterweight move together and that the chosen value is aligned with the centerline.
- Confirm that the anti-skate dial is at the manufacturer-specified setting for that force.
- Return the arm to its rest, engage the tonearm clamp and reinstall the stylus protector when the turntable is not in use.
- Check that the cartridge is seated firmly in the headshell and that no wire is loose. Do not touch the stylus.
- When you play a record, lower the arm with the cueing control rather than dropping it by hand. Stop immediately if the stylus skates across the surface, the arm refuses to descend, or the cartridge body approaches the record.
What changes on other Audio-Technica models?
The balancing idea is shared by many manual arms, but model pages show why you must not copy a number blindly.
| Model | Operation and supplied cartridge information | Documented tracking-force information | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|---|
| AT-LP120XUSB | Manual turntable; the cited manual covers a counterweight, gauge ring and anti-skate dial. | 2.0 g standard for the supplied cartridge. | Follow the six adjustment stages above and set anti-skate to the same value, as the manual directs. |
| AT-LP120XBT-USB | Manual turntable; its manual repeats the core balancing sequence. | 2.0 g standard for its supplied cartridge. | Use the unit’s own manual for control locations and cartridge details before applying the setting. |
| AT-LP3XBT | Bluetooth automatic turntable listed with an AT-VM95C cartridge. | Not stated in the cited product material. | Because it is automatic and the available product information does not establish a force value here, use its manual and the AT-VM95C specification rather than importing 2.0 g. |
| AT-LP7X | Belt-drive turntable listed with an AT-VM95E BK cartridge. | 1.8–2.2 g range; 2.0 g standard for that supplied cartridge. | Keep the setting within 1.8–2.2 g for that cartridge and follow the LP7X instructions for its arm and anti-skate controls. |
The AT-LP3XBT and AT-LP7X examples are product-specific details, not a complete comparison of Audio-Technica’s catalog. If you fit a replacement stylus or a different VM95-series cartridge, verify whether the cartridge specification has changed before reusing the previous number. A replacement stylus is not required to balance an existing cartridge.
Manual versus automatic operation
A manual deck such as the AT-LP120XUSB leaves the arm under your control during balancing and playback. An automatic model such as the AT-LP3XBT may move the arm through its own start and return cycle. That difference matters because an automatic mechanism can require a model-specific procedure and may not expose the same user-adjustable counterweight or anti-skate controls. Do not force an automatic arm through the manual-deck sequence unless its instructions explicitly call for it.
Cartridge and replacement-stylus checks
The cartridge is the part that determines the tracking-force specification. A replacement stylus that belongs to the same cartridge family does not by itself mean you should copy a setting from another deck, and installing a different cartridge or headshell changes the mass and the documented force. Audio-Technica’s AT-LP7X information identifies a compatible VM95-series replacement-stylus family, but buying a replacement stylus is separate from balancing the cartridge already installed.
Why balance and tracking force must be correct
Balance is the reference, not the final load
At the floating point, the counterweight offsets the arm and cartridge mass so the stylus is unloaded. The numbered ring can then be zeroed against that neutral point. If you skip the float step, the number on the ring may not correspond to the force actually applied at the stylus.

A setting below the cartridge specification can let the stylus lose reliable contact with the groove, especially during louder or more heavily modulated passages. The result can be mistracking and audible distortion, while repeated loss of contact can be harder on the record than a correctly specified force. Use the manufacturer’s range instead of choosing the smallest possible number.
Too much force also creates risk
Excess force increases the load on the stylus and record interface. A stylus that sits visibly low, a cartridge body that approaches the record or persistent distortion after balancing are reasons to stop playback and recheck the model, cartridge, balance and force setting.

Troubleshooting a tonearm that will not set correctly
The arm will not float
- Make sure the tonearm clamp is released and the stylus protector is removed only for the observation step.
- Check that the counterweight is threaded fully onto the arm and that the headshell is installed as the manual shows.
- Confirm that the platter, mat and cartridge hardware that belong in the operating configuration are installed.
- Turn the counterweight in small increments while supporting the headshell. If the stylus reaches the platter, stop, return the arm to its rest and restart with the protector fitted.
The arm floats, but the tracking force seems wrong
Recheck that you held the counterweight still while turning only the gauge ring to zero. Then balance the arm again, zero the ring again and turn both the counterweight and ring together to the desired value. Turning the ring alone after zeroing cannot apply the specified force.
The stylus skates inward or outward during playback
Stop the record and verify that the turntable is level, the tracking force is correct for the cartridge and the anti-skate is set according to the model manual. On the AT-LP120XUSB, the documented starting point is an anti-skate value equal to the tracking-force value. Do not keep playing while the stylus is visibly skating.
The cartridge or headshell was replaced
Treat the replacement as a new setup. Confirm the cartridge’s tracking-force specification, rebalance the arm, zero the gauge ring, set the new value and then set anti-skate according to the turntable manual. The old counterweight position is not a reliable reference after a mass change.
The turntable was moved
Clamp the arm and fit the stylus protector before transport. After placing the deck in its new position, level it and inspect the counterweight, headshell and cartridge. A move is a good reason to verify balance and tracking force before playing valuable records.
Common setup mistakes to avoid
- Using 2.0 g everywhere: 2.0 g is the stated standard for the supplied cartridges in the cited AT-LP120XUSB, AT-LP120XBT-USB and AT-LP7X documentation, not a universal Audio-Technica default.
- Zeroing before floating: the ring’s zero is meaningful only after the arm has reached its neutral balance point.
- Turning the ring alone to add force: after zeroing, turn the counterweight and ring together.
- Setting anti-skate first: on the AT-LP120XUSB, anti-skate follows tracking force; it does not correct a balance error.
- Balancing on a tilted surface: level the deck in its operating position before judging whether the arm floats.
- Adjusting with the stylus exposed and unsupported: hold the headshell and keep the tip away from every surface.
- Copying a setting after a cartridge change: a new cartridge or headshell requires a fresh specification check and setup.
A practical setup checklist
- Exact model and cartridge identified.
- Turntable placed on a stable, level surface.
- Stylus protected until the balancing step.
- Tonearm clamp released while the headshell is supported.
- Counterweight adjusted until the arm floats horizontally without the stylus touching anything.
- Arm returned to its rest and clamp secured before zeroing.
- Gauge ring zeroed while the counterweight is held still.
- Counterweight and ring turned together to the cartridge’s documented force.
- Anti-skate set according to the exact turntable manual.
- Stylus protector replaced when the deck is idle or transported.
When to consult the manual instead of copying this sequence
Use the model manual as the controlling document if the turntable is automatic, the arm has no numbered gauge ring, the anti-skate control is absent or calibrated differently, the cartridge is not the one supplied, or the product documentation gives a force range that differs from the examples above. Audio-Technica’s own model pages show different cartridge configurations: the AT-LP3XBT is listed with an AT-VM95C, while the AT-LP7X is listed with an AT-VM95E BK and a 1.8–2.2 g range with 2.0 g standard. Those differences are enough to make a universal “set every Audio-Technica to 2.0 g” rule unsafe.
For the AT-LP120XUSB and AT-LP120XBT-USB, the documented workflow is straightforward once the arm is correctly balanced: float, zero, apply the cartridge value and match anti-skate as directed. The cartridge specification and the manual for the exact model remain the authority whenever your equipment differs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 2.0 g the correct tracking force for every Audio-Technica turntable?
No. The AT-LP120XUSB manual gives 2.0 g as the standard for its supplied cartridge, and the AT-LP7X page gives 1.8–2.2 g with 2.0 g standard for its supplied AT-VM95E BK. Other models and replacement cartridges can differ, so use the exact cartridge specification.

What does it mean when the tonearm floats?
After the counterweight is adjusted, the arm should remain approximately horizontal when released, with the stylus suspended above the platter and touching nothing. This is the neutral balance point. It is not yet the final tracking-force setting.
Why does the tracking-force ring need to be zeroed?
Zeroing establishes a reference at the arm’s floating point. Hold the counterweight still and turn only the numbered ring until zero aligns with the tonearm centerline. Then turn the counterweight and ring together to apply the specified force.
Should anti-skate always equal tracking force?
The AT-LP120XUSB manual instructs you to set anti-skate to the same value as tracking force, so 2.0 g means an anti-skate setting of 2 on that model. Other Audio-Technica turntables may use a different scale or have no user adjustment; follow the exact model manual.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo I need a replacement stylus or a special gauge to balance the arm?
No. A replacement stylus is not required. The documented procedure uses the supplied counterweight and gauge ring. You do need the turntable manual and cartridge specification, and Audio-Technica says a separate level may be used as needed to check that the deck is level.
What should I do after changing the cartridge or headshell?
Treat it as a new setup: confirm the replacement cartridge’s tracking-force range, level the turntable, rebalance the arm, zero the gauge ring, set the new force and then set anti-skate according to the turntable manual. Do not rely on the former counterweight position.
Can I use these steps on an automatic AT-LP3XBT?
Do not assume so. The AT-LP3XBT is an automatic model listed with an AT-VM95C cartridge, and the cited product information does not establish a tracking-force value here. Use its own manual and the AT-VM95C specification rather than importing the AT-LP120XUSB procedure or 2.0 g setting.
The Bottom Line
For an AT-LP120XUSB, level the deck, float the protected arm, zero the gauge ring, turn the counterweight and ring together to the supplied cartridge’s 2.0 g standard, and set anti-skate to 2. For every other Audio-Technica model or cartridge, treat those figures as examples only: the exact manual and cartridge specification control.
