The reliable way to host a Star Wars experience in Arma 3 is to install the dedicated server with SteamCMD, keep the server and client files separate, configure server.cfg and a server profile, forward UDP ports 2302–2306, then install the exact Workshop mission and every dependency it requires. Your players must use the same mod names, versions and dependencies as the server. You can run that stack on your own Windows or Linux machine, or use managed hosting if you do not want to maintain the operating system, network and mod updates.
Decide how you will host
Choose the operating model before downloading anything. The game files and mod workflow are broadly the same, but responsibility for the machine and network is not.
Self-hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over server files, launch parameters, profiles, configuration, scheduled updates and administration. It is suitable when you can maintain a Windows or Linux system, use SteamCMD, open firewall and router ports, and troubleshoot logs. You are also responsible for backups, operating-system updates, mod downloads, key files and player support.
Managed hosting
A managed provider supplies the machine and usually handles much of the operating-system maintenance, network exposure and support. You trade some low-level control for less administration. Confirm that the provider supports your required Arma 3 branch, custom launch parameters, Workshop or manually installed mods, BattlEye, scheduled restarts and the player capacity you need. Pricing, geography, support scope and mod tooling vary by provider and should be checked before purchase.

For a first community event, managed hosting reduces setup work. For a long-running unit that needs custom scripts, launch parameters and direct file control, self-hosting is usually the more flexible choice.
Prepare the machine and directories
Use a supported 64-bit Windows or Linux machine with enough CPU, memory, storage and upload bandwidth for the mission and player count you expect. Arma performance depends heavily on mission scripts, AI and mods, so do not treat a host’s advertised player number as a guarantee.

- A SteamCMD directory used only for the command-line installer and updater.
- A dedicated Arma 3 server directory containing server binaries, configuration and mods.
- Your ordinary Arma 3 client installation, if the same computer is also used to play.
Bohemia Interactive recommends separating SteamCMD, dedicated-server files and client files to reduce file conflicts. On Linux, create a non-root account for the server. Linux profile and path behavior differs from Windows, so use absolute paths in scripts and verify ownership and permissions before launching.
Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
Steam Support states that standalone Steam game servers use SteamCMD to download and update server files. Install SteamCMD in its own directory, then run it with a script or interactive commands that log in as required by the server distribution and download the Arma 3 dedicated-server files into your separate server directory.
Windows workflow
- Download and extract SteamCMD into a directory such as
C:steamcmd. - Create a separate server directory such as
C:arma3server. - Start
steamcmd.exe, select the server install directory withforce_install_dir C:arma3server, and run the Arma 3 server app update command supplied by the current Steam documentation:app_update <Arma 3 server app ID> validate. - Exit SteamCMD only after the update reports completion. Repeat the same update command whenever you deliberately update the server build.
Linux workflow
- Install SteamCMD using your distribution’s supported package or the official SteamCMD files.
- Log in as the non-root account that will run the service and create a dedicated directory, for example
/opt/arma3server. - Set that directory as SteamCMD’s install target and run
app_update <Arma 3 server app ID> validate. - Check that the account owns the server directory and can write logs, profiles and downloaded content.
Do not copy a desktop client’s entire installation over the server directory. Updating the server through SteamCMD keeps the distribution path predictable and makes later repair with validate possible.

Create the server configuration and profile
Start with a text file named server.cfg in the server location you choose. Pass it at launch with -config=server.cfg (or an absolute path). The file controls the server identity and many session rules, while the server profile stores difficulty and related settings created or used at first launch.

Settings to establish before inviting players
- Identity: server name and welcome text so players can recognize the correct instance.
- Access: a password for private events and security settings appropriate to a public server.
- Voting: who can vote and how mission or administrator decisions are handled.
- Difficulty: the profile’s difficulty and associated gameplay behavior.
- Administration: administrator and BattlEye-related controls appropriate to your community.
Keep configuration under version control or make dated backups before changing it. If a launch fails after an edit, restore the last known-good file and inspect the server log for the first configuration error rather than changing several settings at once.
Open the required network ports
For the documented default instance, make UDP ports 2302 through 2306 reachable through both the host firewall and, when applicable, the router or cloud firewall:

Use -port=<number> to select another game port. When running multiple instances, assign each instance a separate port block rather than overlapping the first instance’s 2302–2306 range, and give each instance its own profile, configuration and log locations.
Firewall and router checklist
- Give a self-hosted machine a stable private LAN address, or reserve its address in the router.
- Create inbound UDP rules for the complete port block used by the instance.
- Forward the same UDP block from the internet-facing router address to the server’s private address.
- If the host is in a cloud or data center, open the provider’s security-group or edge-firewall rules as well as the operating-system firewall.
- Restart the server and verify that it appears in the browser or can be reached directly before adding complex mod sets.
Port forwarding cannot overcome carrier-grade NAT, a blocked provider port or an incorrect private address. In those cases, use a reachable host or ask the network provider for a public address.

Select a Star Wars mission and its mod collection
There is no universal “Star Wars mod” that guarantees compatibility with every scenario. Select the specific Workshop mission, campaign or community pack you intend to run first. Its Workshop page should define required dependencies, supported versions, dedicated-server instructions and any required keys.
Arma 3’s official mod overview reported more than 140,000 mods in 2024. That abundance makes dependency checking essential: two packs can use different versions of the same terrain, faction, weapon or framework, and a mission can stop loading when one requirement is missing.
Evaluate a candidate pack
- Mission compatibility: confirm that the pack names the mission or scenarios you will host.
- Dependencies: record every required mod, framework, terrain and optional component.
- Update cadence: check whether recent updates have changed dependencies or broken older missions.
- Performance: look for script-heavy features, AI systems and large terrains that may reduce server simulation performance.
- Licensing: read redistribution terms before mirroring files or publishing a collection.
- Dedicated-server support: prefer packs that document server installation, keys and launch parameters.
Install mods on the server
Download every required item to the server, not just to a player’s desktop. Preserve the folder names, lowercase or capitalization conventions, and key files expected by the mission and server. Do not rename a mod folder casually: the name used in the launch parameter must match the installed directory and the dependency metadata.
- Write down the mission’s required collection and its exact item names.
- Download each item through the supported Workshop or community distribution method.
- Copy or update the resulting mod directories into the dedicated server’s mod location.
- Copy any server key files into the server’s
keysdirectory when the mod supplies them and its instructions require them. - Build one launch list containing the required
-modentries, in the order documented by the mission author when an order is specified. - Start the server with the same configuration, profile, port and mod list every time; use a startup script so a restart does not silently omit an entry.
Optional client-only visual mods should not be added to the server’s required collection unless the mission explicitly needs them. Keep a written distinction between server-required, client-optional and incompatible mods.

arma3server_x64 -config=server.cfg -profiles=<profile path> -port=2302 -mod=<mod1>;<mod2>;<mod3>
On Windows this normally lives in a .bat file. On Linux, run arma3server_x64 from a service or shell script under the non-root server account. Keep the profile path separate for each instance so difficulty and logs do not collide.
Make every client match the server
A player must have the same required mod names, compatible versions and dependencies as the server. The easiest distribution method is a published Workshop collection containing the exact mission requirements, followed by a short written launch checklist.
- Tell players which collection or mission version to install.
- Require them to disable older or conflicting versions rather than loading both.
- Publish changes before the next session when a mission update alters its dependency list.
- Ask players to restart the launcher after updates so stale files are not reused.
Do not promise compatibility from a pack’s title alone. Verify the selected Workshop page, mission description and changelog; Star Wars content is mission-specific.

- Start with the server’s base configuration and the selected mod list.
- Watch the console and log while the process initializes. Stop on the first missing-addon, duplicate-mod or signature error.
- Check that the instance appears in the server browser with the intended name and port.
- Join from a client using the identical required collection.
- Load the target mission, spawn a player and test faction equipment, scripted objectives, radio or VON and any custom respawn system.
- Have a second player connect from outside the host’s local network; this catches router and public-firewall mistakes that a local test can hide.
- Record the working server command, mod list and configuration as the rollback baseline.
Validate one mission before adding additional scenarios. A server that reaches the browser but fails during mission loading usually has a dependency, version, key or launch-order problem rather than a port problem.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The server is not visible
- Confirm that the process is running and listening on the selected game port.
- Check UDP 2302–2306, or the complete alternate block, in the operating-system and router or cloud firewalls.
- Verify port forwarding points to the current private address.
- Check for carrier-grade NAT or a provider firewall that prevents unsolicited inbound traffic.
Players receive a missing-mod or missing-addon message
- Compare the client’s collection with the server’s launch list character by character.
- Read the mission dependency list again; a required framework may be missing even when the main Star Wars pack is installed.
- Remove duplicate or obsolete folders and download the required version again.
- Restart both the launcher and server after replacing files.
Signature or key errors appear
Check that the mod’s supplied key files are in the server’s keys directory and that clients are using the corresponding signed release. Do not bypass signature enforcement blindly on a public server; resolve the mismatch or use the release documented by the mission author.

Inspect server logs and mission scripts, then test with fewer AI units or optional script-heavy components. A large mod count is not itself a performance diagnosis; terrain size, AI and script activity often matter more. Change one factor at a time and keep the working mod list as a comparison point.
Linux starts but cannot save settings
Run the process under the intended non-root account, verify ownership of the profile and log directories, and use absolute paths. A read-only or incorrectly resolved profile path can make difficulty and administration changes appear not to persist.
Maintain the server after launch
Schedule SteamCMD updates during a maintenance window, then test the mission before allowing players back in. Keep backups of server.cfg, profiles, startup scripts, mission parameters and a known-good mod manifest. Review each mod’s changelog for dependency changes, key rotations or breaking updates.
When a mission changes its required collection, update the server first, test it privately, and publish the new collection to players before the next event. For multiple instances, document each instance’s profile, port block, configuration file and mod list so a restart does not launch the wrong scenario.

What a complete working setup contains
- SteamCMD in its own directory and a separately updated Arma 3 server directory.
- A non-root Linux account when using Linux, or a dedicated service account where practical on Windows.
- A tested
server.cfgand unique profile directory. - UDP 2302–2306 reachable for the default instance, or a documented alternate block.
- The exact Star Wars mission, all dependencies, required keys and a recorded
-modlist. - A published client collection matching the server’s names and versions.
- A repeatable startup script, backups and a test procedure for mission loading and external connections.
Once those pieces are documented, the server becomes repeatable: update through SteamCMD, refresh the approved mod manifest, test privately, then announce the same collection and launch requirements to players.
