Pair a Google Find Hub-compatible Bluetooth tracker with your Android phone through Fast Pair, then verify it in the Find Hub app. Other Android phones do not automatically become a universal detection test for your tag: their Unknown tracker alerts feature scans for supported trackers that are near them and separated from their owners. That owner-finding network and the safety scan are different functions, with different settings and limits.

What the two Android features actually do

There are two related but separate experiences:

  • Find Hub for the owner: You pair a compatible tag to your Google Account and use the Find Hub app to locate your belongings. When the tag is offline, nearby participating Android devices can detect its Bluetooth signal and securely report an approximate location to the network.
  • Unknown tracker alerts for everyone: An Android phone can look for supported trackers that are nearby but separated from their owners. This is a personal-safety feature, not a general Bluetooth scanner and not a guarantee that every phone can detect every tag.

A tag can therefore help you find your own property through Find Hub while remaining invisible to an unrelated phone if it is unsupported, out of range, or still considered close to its owner. Conversely, another phone may report a supported tag that is simply misplaced; a positive scan does not by itself prove that someone is following the person holding the phone.

Before pairing: requirements and checks

  • Use a Bluetooth tracker tag that is compatible with Google Find Hub. Compatibility is model-specific; not every Bluetooth tag works with Find Hub.
  • Use an Android phone signed in to a Google Account.
  • Turn on Location. Google notes that menu names and paths can vary by Android version.
  • Make sure Bluetooth is available and that the tag has a working battery.
  • Use a screen lock when you want your phone to participate in the offline-finding network. Google says a PIN, pattern, or password is required for network help locating offline items.

Set up your tracker in Find Hub

1. Turn on the phone settings Find Hub needs

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Security > Find Hub.
  3. Turn on Allow device to be located.
  4. Confirm that Location is enabled in the phone’s main location settings.

These labels can differ by Android release. If you cannot find the menu, use Settings search for Find Hub and check Google’s current Android Help instructions for your version.

Setting What it controls
Off Your phone does not participate in the offline-finding network.
Without network You can use Find Hub without joining the network of nearby Android devices.
With network in busy places only Your phone helps locate offline items when it is in places where many devices are present.
With network everywhere Your phone can contribute detections in more locations.

Select the option that fits your privacy and battery preferences. Network participation is about helping locate offline items; it does not turn your phone into an unrestricted tracker detector. A lock-screen PIN, pattern, or password is required for network help locating offline items.

3. Open Find Hub and pair the tag with Fast Pair

  1. Install or open the Find Hub app and sign in with the same Google Account used on the phone.
  2. Bring the compatible tag close to the phone and put the tag into pairing mode according to its manufacturer instructions.
  3. Follow the Android Fast Pair prompt. If no prompt appears, check Bluetooth, wake the tag, move it closer, and verify that its battery tab has been removed.
  4. Complete pairing and accept the prompt to add the tag to Find Hub if Android displays one.

Google says compatible Bluetooth tracker tags are added to Find Hub automatically after Fast Pair finishes. You should not need to add the tag as a generic Bluetooth accessory first.

4. Confirm the tag appears and test its owner controls

  1. Open Find Hub and select the tag from your items.
  2. Check that the item has a recognizable name and that its map or last-known location loads.
  3. Use the app’s sound control while the tag is nearby. Hearing the tag confirms that the phone can communicate with it at short range.
  4. Move the tag a short distance away and refresh its status to learn how quickly your phone updates the connection.

The short-range sound test checks your own phone-to-tag connection. It does not test whether unrelated Android phones will detect the tag as unknown.

Using the Find Hub network to locate an offline tag

When your tag is away from your phone, participating Android devices near the tag can scan over Bluetooth and securely send a detected location to Find Hub. Google describes the location information as end-to-end encrypted. The network can therefore help with an item left in a public place even when your phone is no longer within Bluetooth range.

The network setting you selected determines whether your phone contributes detections for other users’ offline items. It does not guarantee a location update. A tag must be within Bluetooth range of a participating device, and the quality and timing of updates depend on where the tag is and how many participating devices pass nearby.

UWB precision finding

Some tags and phones support Ultra-wideband (UWB) precision finding. To use it, both the tag and the phone must support UWB, and UWB must be enabled on the phone. Google says availability and performance vary by model; its listed compatible families include selected Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, Motorola Edge, and Razr phones. A compatible tag is also required, so ordinary Bluetooth pairing does not imply that precision finding is available.

Check whether another Android phone can detect the tag

Use this procedure on the other Android phone, not the phone that owns the tag.

Run a manual unknown-tracker scan

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Safety & Emergency > Unknown tracker alerts.
  3. Tap Scan now.
  4. Keep the phone moving with you while the scan runs. Google says a manual scan takes about 10 seconds.
  5. Review any result and tap it for the available details.

Google makes this feature available on Android 6 and later. Current alert compatibility includes Find Hub network-compatible tags, compatible headphones, and Apple AirTags. It does not include every Bluetooth accessory or every tracker sold for Android.

Understand what a scan result proves

Result What you can conclude What you cannot conclude
A supported tracker appears A compatible tracker is nearby and the system considers it physically separated from its owner. That the tracker is following the person holding the phone, or that its owner placed it there intentionally.
No tracker appears No supported, detectable separated tracker was found during that scan. That every nearby Bluetooth device is undetectable, or that an unsupported tag is absent.

There is no universal owner-run test that makes any tag appear as an unknown tracker on another Android phone. To demonstrate the safety scan with your own equipment, the tag must be a supported type, the second phone must meet the Android requirements, and the tag must be separated from its owner long enough for the system’s rules to apply. A tag sitting beside its paired owner’s phone may not be reported.

Manual scans versus automatic alerts

A manual scan is an immediate check initiated by the phone owner. Automatic alerts are background protections that can notify someone when a supported tracker appears to be moving with them without its owner.

Characteristic Manual scan Automatic alert
How it starts The user taps Scan now. The system evaluates nearby activity in the background.
Location requirement On Android 11 and later, a manual scan can still work with Location off. On Android 10 and earlier, manual scanning uses Location and Bluetooth. Location must be on.
Timing About 10 seconds for one scan. May take time because the system considers movement and other factors.
Frequency You can initiate another scan when needed. Google says a user receives at most one alert per tracker per day.
Interpretation Shows a supported separated tracker detected at scan time. Signals that the system believes a supported tracker may be traveling with the person.

Bluetooth tracker identifiers change regularly. The same physical tracker can therefore appear as a new tracker after its identifier changes.

Why another phone did not find your tag

The tag is not a supported type

Unknown tracker alerts recognize supported Find Hub network-compatible tags, compatible headphones, and Apple AirTags. A conventional Bluetooth beacon, earbud, or tracker that is not in those categories may not appear even when it is close.

The tag is still near its owner

The safety system is designed to find trackers separated from their owners. If the paired owner’s phone remains near the tag, a manual scan on another phone may correctly return nothing.

The tag is out of Bluetooth range or shielded

Move the scanning phone closer to the tag and remove obvious obstacles such as a metal container or a vehicle compartment. A negative scan only describes that moment and location; it is not a certification that the tag cannot be detected elsewhere.

The phone does not meet the Android requirement

Check that the scanning phone runs Android 6 or later. For automatic alerts, turn on Location. On older Android releases, also confirm Bluetooth and Location are enabled for a manual scan.

The alert has not had enough time to trigger

Automatic alerts can require the tracker to move with the phone over time. A manual scan is faster, but it remains a snapshot and can show a temporarily separated or misplaced tag.

The tag or phone has a temporary connection problem

  • Replace or recharge the tag battery according to its manufacturer instructions.
  • Turn Bluetooth off and on, then repeat the scan near the tag.
  • Restart the scanning phone if Settings does not show Unknown tracker alerts.
  • Update Android and Google system components when an update is offered.
  • Confirm that the tag is actually paired to the owner’s account and appears in Find Hub before testing detection.

Privacy and data handling

For unknown-tracker alerts, Google says the phone uses location information, detection timestamps, and the tracker’s device ID to process detections. That information is temporarily stored in encrypted form on the phone and is not shared with Google or other users, according to Google’s Android Help guidance.

Find Hub’s offline network uses encrypted location reporting between participating devices and the service. Choosing a network participation mode is therefore a privacy decision as well as a way to help locate offline items. Review the setting whenever you change phones or Google Accounts.

What to do when an unknown-tracker alert appears

  1. Open the alert and review the detected travel map. Google says the map shows where the tracker was detected with you; it does not show where the owner checked the tracker’s location.
  2. Use Play sound to help locate the tag. For compatible Find Hub trackers, use Find nearby when that option is offered.
  3. If you feel unsafe, move to a safe public place and contact law enforcement or a trusted person.
  4. Preserve the alert, map, and tracker information if it may be relevant to an investigation.
  5. Follow the tracker’s manufacturer instructions before disabling it. Turning off your phone’s Bluetooth or Location, or enabling Airplane mode, does not disable the tracker.

Be careful when resetting or disabling a device: Google warns that some actions can erase information that might be useful to an investigation. A tracker that is merely lost or temporarily separated from its owner can also generate a scan result, so treat the alert as evidence to assess rather than proof of intent.

How long can Find Hub location updates be paused?

For supported Find Hub trackers, Google documents a temporary pause of location updates for up to 24 hours in the relevant device controls. This is a time-limited setting, not a way to remove the tracker from Find Hub permanently. The exact control and availability depend on the tracker and Android version.

Use trackers lawfully and with consent

Use Find Hub only for property you own or are authorized to track. Google’s Find Hub acceptable use policy prohibits tracking people or property that does not belong to you, identifying someone’s presence without their knowledge and consent, or placing a tag to obtain information about another person without consent. It also prohibits modifying trackers or removing safety features.

For a legitimate setup, tell household members or coworkers when a tracker is attached to shared equipment, use the owner’s account controls, and leave the tag’s safety functions intact. Do not hide a tag on another person’s vehicle, bag, clothing, or personal property.

A practical test plan

If you want to verify both owner locating and unknown-tracker behavior without confusing the two systems, use this sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pair a confirmed Find Hub-compatible tag to the owner’s Android phone with Fast Pair.
  2. Verify the tag appears in Find Hub and use the sound control at close range.
  3. On the owner’s phone, review Settings > Google > All Services > Find Hub > Find your offline devices and record the selected network mode.
  4. Move the tag away from the owner and their phone while keeping the tag in a place you control.
  5. On a second Android phone running Android 6 or later, open Settings > Safety & Emergency > Unknown tracker alerts > Scan now.
  6. Interpret the result only as a supported separated tracker detected at that time. Do not treat a clean scan as proof that an unsupported or out-of-range device is invisible.
  7. Return the tag to its owner and confirm that Find Hub still lists it. If you no longer need the test, remove the tag through the owner’s account and follow the manufacturer’s reset instructions.

The key distinction to remember

Find Hub helps an owner locate a paired item through direct Bluetooth communication and, when enabled, a network of nearby Android devices. Unknown tracker alerts protect another person by looking for supported trackers that appear separated from their owners. Pairing a tag successfully does not mean every Android phone can detect it, and a manual scan cannot prove that a tracker is being used to follow someone.
