To make an Android phone feel familiar after switching from iPhone, transfer your data during Android’s initial setup, turn off iMessage before removing the iPhone SIM, then arrange your Home screen and choose the navigation style you prefer. Not everything transfers automatically, and exact steps vary by Android phone, so check the prompts on your device and verify important content before wiping or trading in the iPhone.
Prepare both phones before you start
- Charge both phones and connect them to Wi-Fi. Keep them connected while the transfer runs.
- Make sure you can unlock the iPhone and have it available during Android setup.
- Check that the new phone has enough storage for the content you want to copy.
- If the iPhone is managed by a school or employer, its settings may restrict data transfer.
Android setup steps can differ by manufacturer and model. Follow the new phone’s on-screen prompts; Google’s Android setup guide notes that some steps vary by device.
How to transfer data from iPhone to Android
- Start setting up the new Android phone and choose the option to copy apps and data from an iPhone or iPad when prompted.
- Choose a wireless or wired transfer method offered by your phone. Some supported devices connect wirelessly using a QR code; a wired transfer requires a cable compatible with both phones. If you do not have one, Google notes that a USB-A-to-USB-C adapter may be needed in some setups. Check the ports on your exact iPhone and Android model before buying a cable or adapter.
- Select the categories of information you want to copy, then keep both phones connected until setup and transfer finish. Available methods and whether transfer is still offered after setup depend on the Android version and device. Google says cable transfer is available during initial setup; some phone models allow it for a few days afterward, so check the manufacturer’s guidance if you skipped it.
- Open the new phone and check the important items—such as contacts, messages, photos, calendar entries, notes, and messaging apps—before erasing, trading in, or otherwise giving up the iPhone.
Google’s iPhone-to-Android transfer guide shows that wired and wireless methods do not necessarily copy the same categories. Use its current compatibility table for your device and method rather than assuming that “copy” means everything will move.

What transfers—and what may need a separate step
Some content is not carried over through Google’s documented transfer process. The guide identifies iCloud photos and videos as requiring a separate transfer route, and lists paid apps and in-app purchases, Safari bookmarks, and Health data among items that do not transfer through the described process. Check the current table for details that apply to your transfer method.

- Photos and videos: Do not assume iCloud-only items will appear on Android through the setup copy. Use Google’s separate route for iCloud photos and videos if you need them on the new phone.
- Apps and purchases: A free app may be available on Google Play, but availability does not move its sign-in, app data, purchase, or subscription. Do not expect an iPhone app license or in-app purchase to become an Android purchase. Google advises contacting the app developer about paid subscriptions.
- Safari bookmarks and Health data: Google lists these as not transferred through the documented process, so make a separate plan if you need them.
- WhatsApp: Google describes a way to transfer WhatsApp history using the QR code shown on the new Android phone. Follow the on-screen flow and check the current transfer guide for compatibility.
Turn off iMessage before removing the SIM
Before taking the SIM out of the iPhone, turn off iMessage on that phone. If you remove the SIM first, messages sent as SMS or MMS may continue routing to the old iPhone rather than arriving on Android. Google’s instructions are in Switch texting from iMessage to Google Messages.
If you no longer have access to the iPhone or its SIM, use Apple’s phone-number deregistration process, linked from Google’s guidance. For existing iPhone group conversations, Google says you may need to start a new group chat after switching.

Make the Android Home screen work like your routine
Android is customizable, but there is no single Home screen or launcher layout shared by every phone. Start with the habits that matter most: keep frequently used apps easy to reach, limit the number of screens you need to scan, and add widgets through your phone’s launcher controls if you use them.

- Move your most-used apps into the bottom favorites row or dock, if your launcher provides one.
- Place other apps on a small number of Home screens, and add desired widgets using the device’s own Home screen controls.

Choose gestures or navigation buttons
Android commonly offers gesture navigation and three-button navigation. Gestures use a bottom-edge swipe to go Home and a swipe-and-hold to view open apps. Three-button navigation keeps Back, Home, and Overview buttons visible. Try both and keep the one that feels more comfortable.

To find the setting, open Settings and search for “Navigation” if the menu path is not obvious. Names and availability differ across versions and manufacturers. Google explains the general options in Get around on your Android device.
