If your device is a compatible Fire HD 8, hands-free Alexa is enabled from Settings > Alexa: turn on both Alexa and Hands-Free Mode. Show Mode is optional and has separate generation and software requirements. First identify whether you own a Fire HD 8 or Amazon’s separately documented “Alexa Tablet,” because their setup paths and feature support should not be merged.
Identify which Amazon tablet you have
“Amazon Alexa Tablet 8” is not precise enough to establish one model. Amazon has a dedicated support page for a product called Alexa Tablet, while Fire HD 8 tablets have generation-specific Alexa and Show Mode support. Check the tablet before following any steps.
Check the model and generation
- Open Settings on the tablet.
- Open Device Options (or the device-information page shown on your software version).
- Read the model name, generation, and Fire OS version. You can also compare the physical model information with the listings in Amazon’s Show Mode compatibility instructions.
If the screen identifies a Fire HD 8, use the Fire tablet instructions below. If it identifies the newer product named Alexa Tablet, use the separate setup sequence later in this guide rather than assuming Fire HD 8 menus are present.
An eight-inch screen is not enough to identify the device. Different Fire HD 8 generations can have different Show Mode support, and Amazon’s Alexa Tablet help page describes a separate product and first-use flow. Record the exact model name and generation before buying an accessory or promising that a menu will appear.

What you need before enabling hands-free Alexa
- The tablet must be signed in to its main profile. Amazon says Alexa features on Fire Tablet are unavailable in secondary profiles, including child profiles.
- The tablet needs a working Wi-Fi connection and an Amazon account. Alexa sends requests to Amazon’s cloud after the wake word is detected.
- For Show Mode, the tablet must be one of the supported Fire HD 8 generations and meet the listed software minimum.
- Hands-free Alexa does not require the optional Show Mode Charging Dock. The dock only adds charging, a stand, and automatic mode switching on specified older models.
Amazon’s Fire tablet Alexa guide explains the main-profile requirement and how Alexa operates on Fire tablets.
Why the main profile matters
Profile selection is an easy-to-miss setup dependency. If the tablet is currently in a child profile or another secondary profile, Alexa controls can be unavailable even when the hardware has a microphone and the tablet is online. Switch to the tablet’s main adult profile before diagnosing a missing setting, a missing wake-word response, or a disabled Show Mode control.
Do you need the dock?
No. The core setup is software-based: sign in, enable Alexa, and enable Hands-Free Mode. The dock is relevant only if you want a supported older Fire HD 8 to charge while standing upright and, with the required settings enabled, switch into Show Mode automatically. Buying the dock cannot make an incompatible generation support Show Mode.
Turn on hands-free Alexa on a compatible Fire HD 8
1. Switch to the main profile
From the lock screen or profile menu, select the tablet’s main adult profile. If you are in a child or other secondary profile, the Alexa controls may be missing or unavailable. Do not troubleshoot the microphone until you have confirmed the active profile.
2. Enable Alexa and Hands-Free Mode
- Open Settings.
- Tap Alexa.
- Turn on Alexa.
- Turn on Hands-Free Mode.
Amazon’s Alexa FAQ gives this same path and states that both settings must be enabled for hands-free activation: Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs.
Both switches matter. Enabling Alexa without Hands-Free Mode leaves you with manual access rather than an always-available wake-word trigger. Conversely, Hands-Free Mode is not a substitute for activating Alexa itself. If you want to disable listening later, return to this same menu and turn off Hands-Free Mode.
3. Test the wake word
With the tablet awake, say “Alexa,” followed by a simple request. A blue light bar should appear while the tablet is recording and sending the request. If Alexa responds, the basic hands-free setup is complete. You can continue using the tablet normally; Show Mode is a separate visual interface.

If there is no response, confirm the active profile, Wi-Fi connection, and both Alexa switches before moving to Show Mode or dock troubleshooting.
Turn on Show Mode (optional)
Show Mode presents Alexa responses in a larger, display-oriented interface. It is not required for hands-free voice control, and it is not available on every Fire HD 8 generation.
Verify generation and Fire OS first
| Fire HD 8 model | Software requirement listed by Amazon | Show Mode status |
|---|---|---|
| 7th Generation | Fire OS 5.6.1.0 or later | Supported when the software requirement is met |
| 8th Generation | Fire OS 6.3.0.1 or later | Supported when the software requirement is met |
| 10th Generation | Fire OS 7.3.1.4 or later | Supported when the software requirement is met |
| 12th Generation | Not applicable | Amazon lists this generation as incompatible with Show Mode |
These generation and version limits come from Amazon’s Switch to Show Mode on Your Fire Tablet instructions. A tablet can have Alexa hands-free controls even when it cannot use Show Mode, so do not treat Show Mode compatibility as proof that every Alexa feature is identical across models.
The software floor is specific to the generation. For example, an 8th-generation tablet below Fire OS 6.3.0.1 does not meet Amazon’s listed Show Mode requirement, while a 7th-generation tablet is evaluated against 5.6.1.0. Check the version shown in the tablet’s device information rather than inferring compatibility from the purchase year or screen size.

Exit Show Mode
Swipe down to Quick Actions and toggle Show Mode off, or say “Alexa, exit Show Mode.” If Show Mode is unavailable in Quick Actions, check the generation and software table before changing other settings.
Show Mode is a presentation choice, not a prerequisite for hands-free Alexa. You can leave it off and still use the wake word on a compatible Fire tablet. This distinction is especially important on a 12th-generation Fire HD 8, which Amazon lists as incompatible with Show Mode.
Disable hands-free Alexa or use an alternative trigger
Turn off the setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap Alexa.
- Turn off Hands-Free Mode. You can also disable Alexa entirely from the same area.
Amazon also documents a Hands-Free Quick Action. On supported software, another hardware shortcut is to press and hold Volume Up and Volume Down together for three seconds. In Show Mode, the Alexa microphone and camera control is available from Quick Actions.
These controls give you more than one way to stop hands-free operation. The Settings switch is the primary, persistent option; the Quick Action and Show Mode control are convenient when you want to change listening behavior without navigating through the full Settings menu. The volume-button shortcut is documented as a three-second simultaneous press.
Use press-and-hold Alexa instead
When hands-free mode is off and you are outside Show Mode, pressing and holding the Home button remains an alternative way to invoke Alexa. This avoids leaving the microphone listening for the wake word while retaining manual access.
Understand the privacy behavior
Amazon says Fire tablet Alexa uses on-device keyword spotting to detect the wake word. After the wake word is detected, the request is streamed to Amazon’s cloud; Amazon’s FAQ says the stream includes a fraction of a second of audio immediately before the wake word. This description comes from Amazon, not from an independent microphone test. See Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs for the company’s explanation.
That means the accurate description is not that no audio ever leaves the tablet before the wake word. Amazon describes on-device detection followed by cloud streaming that includes a fraction of a second immediately preceding the detected wake word. Keep the blue light bar in mind as the visible indication that the tablet is recording and sending the request.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Know when the tablet is recording
A blue light bar appears when the tablet is recording and sending an Alexa request. If you do not want hands-free detection active, turn off Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode or use the microphone control in Quick Actions while in Show Mode.
Review or delete voice recordings
Amazon provides voice-history controls. You can say “Delete what I just said” to remove the most recent interaction or “Delete everything I said today” to request deletion of that day’s recordings. The same Alexa FAQ explains these controls and the recording behavior.
Screen-off limitations
Amazon notes that some Fire tablets may not detect the wake word with the screen off when they are not connected to power. If wake-word response is inconsistent in that state, test with the display on and then while the tablet is charging; do not assume that a missed wake word means the Alexa account or microphone is broken.
This limitation can make a setup seem intermittent: the same tablet may answer while its display is on or while it is plugged in, but miss the wake word with the screen off and no power connection. Treat those conditions as part of the test. The behavior does not by itself establish that Hands-Free Mode is disabled.

Set up the optional Fire HD 8 Show Mode Charging Dock
The dock is an accessory for a narrower set of older Fire HD 8 tablets. It is useful when you want a charging stand and automatic transition into Show Mode, but it is not required for the manual setup above.

Compatibility
- Amazon documents compatibility with Fire HD 8 (7th Generation) and Fire HD 8 (8th Generation).
- The 8th-generation tablet requires software 6.3.0.1 or later.
- Amazon excludes the 12th-generation Fire HD 8 from Show Mode, so the dock should not be treated as a universal current Fire HD 8 accessory.
Enable automatic switching
For a compatible tablet to enter Show Mode when docked, Amazon says Automatic Mode Switching must be enabled and Alexa must be activated. The dock charges the tablet but does not enter Show Mode when Alexa has not been activated.
Use Amazon’s current accessory instructions for the exact dock controls and compatibility notes: Use the Show Mode Charging Dock. Amazon’s support material does not establish a current price, stock status, or universal availability, so verify those details on the live product listing before buying.
Because the dock is tied to both hardware generation and software behavior, check the tablet first and the listing second. A dock purchase is sensible only when you own a documented 7th- or 8th-generation Fire HD 8, the 8th-generation software floor is met where applicable, and you actually want a charging stand or automatic switching.
Dock or manual Show Mode?
| Your priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Try Show Mode without buying an accessory | Manual Quick Actions or voice command | Hands-free setup and Show Mode activation are software functions. |
| Keep an older compatible tablet charged and upright | Show Mode Charging Dock | Adds charging and a stand on 7th- and 8th-generation Fire HD 8 models. |
| Use a 12th-generation Fire HD 8 | Manual Alexa features only, subject to the tablet’s available settings | Amazon lists this generation as incompatible with Show Mode, so the dock cannot provide that mode. |
| Need automatic entry into Show Mode | Dock with Automatic Mode Switching enabled | Automatic switching depends on compatible hardware, enabled Alexa, and the required setting. |
Troubleshoot common setup problems
There is no Alexa option in Settings
- Confirm that you are using the main profile, not a child or other secondary profile.
- Check the model name and generation. An “8-inch” screen alone does not establish Fire HD 8 feature compatibility.
- Confirm the tablet is connected to Wi-Fi and signed in to the intended Amazon account.
- If the menus still do not match, use Amazon’s Fire Tablet Help index for the exact model.
Alexa works only when you hold Home
Open Settings > Alexa and verify that both Alexa and Hands-Free Mode are on. Holding Home is the manual alternative and does not prove hands-free mode is enabled.
The wake word is missed with the screen off
Test with the screen on and while connected to power. Amazon specifically notes that some tablets may not detect the wake word with the screen off when they are not plugged in. A blue light bar is expected only when the tablet detects the request and begins recording and sending it.
Show Mode is missing
Compare the tablet’s generation and Fire OS version with Amazon’s compatibility list. Fire HD 8 7th Generation needs 5.6.1.0 or later, 8th Generation needs 6.3.0.1 or later, and 10th Generation needs 7.3.1.4 or later. The 12th Generation is listed as incompatible. If the tablet qualifies, open Quick Actions from the home screen and look for Show Mode.
The dock charges but does not switch modes
Check that the tablet is a supported 7th- or 8th-generation Fire HD 8, that the 8th-generation model meets software 6.3.0.1 or later, that Alexa is activated, and that Automatic Mode Switching is enabled. Amazon says the dock will charge without entering Show Mode when Alexa is not activated.
The blue light does not appear
The blue light bar is described as appearing when the tablet is recording and sending an Alexa request. If it never appears during a deliberate test, first verify the main profile and both Alexa settings. Then test with the screen on and with the tablet connected to power, since Amazon notes screen-off limitations on some tablets away from power.
A child cannot use Alexa
Amazon says Alexa features on Fire Tablet require the main profile and are unavailable in secondary profiles, including child profiles. Switch to the main profile for Alexa access rather than treating the missing controls as a microphone or Wi-Fi failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you actually have Amazon’s separate Alexa Tablet
Amazon’s “How to Set Up Your Alexa Tablet” page describes a different first-use flow. It asks you to have an Amazon account and Wi-Fi details, then power on the tablet, choose a language, and continue through the on-screen setup. The page also describes using a Google account for Google Play and Google apps. Those instructions do not establish that the product is equivalent to a Fire HD 8 or that it uses the same Settings > Alexa path.
For that product, follow the device-specific Alexa and voice-assistant prompts shown during setup and use Amazon’s dedicated page: How to Set Up Your Alexa Tablet. If the tablet’s name, generation, or menus differ from the Fire HD 8 instructions in this article, do not force the Fire HD 8 procedure onto it.
Recommended Free Tools
The safest sequence is to identify the product first, complete its own first-use setup with an Amazon account and Wi-Fi, and then follow the Alexa controls shown for that product. Do not infer Show Mode support, profile behavior, or menu names from a Fire HD 8 simply because both devices are tablets with Alexa branding.

What if my device is called Alexa Tablet rather than Fire HD 8?
Use Amazon’s dedicated Alexa Tablet setup page. That flow asks for an Amazon account and Wi-Fi details, then guides language and on-screen setup; it also describes a Google account for Google Play and Google apps. Do not assume Fire HD 8 menus or Show Mode support.
The Bottom Line
For a compatible Fire HD 8, select the main profile, open Settings > Alexa, and enable both Alexa and Hands-Free Mode. Test for the blue recording light, then treat Show Mode as an optional feature governed by generation and Fire OS version. Amazon excludes the 12th-generation Fire HD 8 from Show Mode. The Charging Dock is optional and limited to documented older models; it cannot add unsupported features. If the tablet is Amazon’s separate Alexa Tablet product, follow its dedicated setup path instead of applying Fire HD 8 instructions.
