Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
To run an All of Fabric 3 server, use the dedicated server pack for the 1.16.5 modpack, install Java 8, install or verify the matching Fabric loader, launch once to create the files, accept Minecraft’s EULA, and then open TCP port 25565. A small private group should plan for about 8 GB of allocated memory. Every player must use the same All of Fabric 3 release as the server.
The most common failed setup is using the client ZIP instead of the server pack. The client archive is only a launcher manifest; it does not contain a runnable dedicated server. The steps below separate the download, Java, Fabric, first launch, networking and troubleshooting decisions so you can identify a failure without reinstalling everything.

What you need before installing
All of Fabric 3 is a Fabric modpack for Minecraft 1.16.5. The dedicated server and every connecting client need compatible versions of Minecraft, Fabric Loader and the modpack. You also need a legally obtained copy of Minecraft: Java Edition for each player; a server does not provide game licenses.
- A computer or hosted instance with a clean directory reserved for the server.
- Java 8. Minecraft 1.16.5 and older require Java 8 according to Fabric’s headless-server documentation.
- The All of Fabric 3 dedicated server pack, not the client download.
- Enough memory for the number of players you expect.
- Permission to open a firewall rule and, for home hosting, forward a router port.
- A matching All of Fabric 3 installation on each player’s computer.
The All of Fabric 3 listing identifies TCP port 25565 as the normal server port. You can choose another port, but then the server property, firewall rule and router forward must all use that same number.

Choose a memory size
The pack listing publishes planning figures rather than an independent performance benchmark. Use them as starting points and watch the server’s behavior after players explore new terrain, because generated chunks and mod activity can change memory use.
| Use case | Published memory guidance |
|---|---|
| One player | 6 GB |
| Two to four friends | 8 GB |
| Five to ten players | 10 GB |
| Public server | 12 GB |
The same page recommends 8 GB for a small group. These figures are vendor guidance attributed to FadeHost and shown on the listing accessed in 2026, not a controlled benchmark. Leave memory for the operating system and other services; assigning every physical gigabyte to Java can make the machine less stable.

Create an isolated server directory
Make a new directory used only by this instance. Keeping the world, configuration, logs and mod files together makes backups and upgrades safer. Do not unpack the server over an unrelated Minecraft installation, and avoid placing it in a directory where your operating system or another game automatically cleans files.
Install Java 8 on Debian or Ubuntu
Fabric’s headless guide lists OpenJDK 8 and curl for a Debian- or Ubuntu-style system. Run the package commands from an account that can use sudo:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install openjdk-8-jre-headless
sudo apt install curl
Check the active runtime before installing the pack:
java -version
The output must identify Java 8. If it reports Java 17, Java 21 or another release, correct the system’s default Java selection or invoke the Java 8 executable explicitly. Installing Java 8 alongside another version is fine, but the launcher must actually use Java 8.

On another operating system, install a supported Java 8 runtime from a reputable distribution and perform the same java -version check. The important requirement is the runtime used by the server process, not merely a Java 8 installer that happens to be present.
Download the correct All of Fabric 3 archive
Select the dedicated server pack
Open the All of Fabric 3 project page on CurseForge and select its separate server-pack download. The project describes each server pack as containing the mod JARs, configuration files and a start script. The newest release identified on that page is All of Fabric 3 version 2.8.8.
Do not rename a client download and do not assume that a launcher-created client folder can be copied to a server. The client ZIP is only a manifest used by a launcher and does not run as a dedicated server. Using it usually leaves you without the required server-side files or places client-only mods in the server directory.
Extract and inspect the files
- Download the server-pack archive into a temporary location.
- Extract its contents into the clean directory you created.
- Keep the supplied start script, configuration folders and mod JARs together.
- Check that the archive was not extracted into an extra nested folder that you will later mistake for the server root.
- Record the pack version shown in the archive or project page. Players must install this exact release.
The project page reports more than 1.1 million downloads for the pack, credited to TeamAOE in 2022. That number indicates adoption, not a guarantee that every release or mod combination will work on your machine.
Install or verify Fabric Server
A server pack may already include everything needed to launch. If it does not, install Fabric in the server directory before the first run. Fabric documents two approaches.
Executable server launcher
Fabric’s executable server launcher is a JAR that downloads missing Fabric Loader and Minecraft files, then starts the game server. This is usually the least error-prone method when you have the launcher JAR supplied by the pack or selected for the correct Minecraft version. Keep the launcher in the server directory so the downloaded files are stored beside the world and configuration.

The generic Fabric form is:
java -Xmx2G -jar <fabric server launcher jar file name> nogui
For All of Fabric 3, replace the example heap with the amount appropriate for your group, commonly -Xmx8G for a small group. Keep nogui on a headless machine or whenever you want the terminal to remain the server console.
Manual installer method
Fabric’s manual method runs the Fabric installer with the server option in the server directory. It creates fabric-server-launch.jar and expects a Minecraft server JAR named server.jar. If either file is missing, the server cannot complete this method. Confirm that the installer selected Minecraft 1.16.5 and that the resulting loader is the one required by the All of Fabric 3 release.

A loader mismatch can look like a missing-mod problem because the process fails before the complete mod list is loaded.
Run the first launch and accept the EULA
- From the server directory, run the supplied start script. If no script works on your system, run the Fabric launcher with the Java command shown above and an appropriate
-Xmxvalue. - Allow the process to run until it stops or reports that the EULA must be accepted. The first launch creates files such as
eula.txt, server properties, logs and the world directory. - Open
eula.txtand change the acceptance line toeula=trueonly after you have read and accepted Minecraft’s EULA. - Save the file and start the same script or command again.
- Leave the console running until it reports that the server is ready. Stop it with the console’s normal stop command before closing the terminal or rebooting the machine.
First boot can take several minutes while the mods register content and the world is generated. A long pause is not automatically a crash. Watch the console and log for new lines; investigate only when output stops with an error or the process exits.
Set the heap deliberately
The -Xmx option sets Java’s maximum heap. For example, -Xmx8G permits Java to use up to 8 GB. You can also set an initial heap with -Xms, but the pack’s published guidance concerns the available RAM allocation, not a mandatory initial value.
- Use about 6 GB for a solo installation if the machine has enough additional memory for the operating system.
- Use about 8 GB for two to four friends, the pack’s stated small-group recommendation.
- Plan for 10 GB at five to ten players and 12 GB for a public server, while treating those values as starting guidance.
- Do not allocate more RAM than the host can provide comfortably. Swapping to disk causes severe pauses even when Java has not reached its limit.
If the supplied script already contains a memory setting, edit that setting rather than creating a second command that players will not use. After changing it, restart the server and confirm the actual Java command in the startup output or script.

Make the server reachable
Local testing first
Before changing router settings, connect from the same computer with the local address shown by your operating system or with localhost. This separates a mod or Java failure from a network problem. Test only after the console reports that the server is ready.
Forward TCP 25565
- Give the server computer a stable local address, preferably through a DHCP reservation on the router.
- Create a router port-forward rule for TCP port 25565 to that local address.
- Allow the server’s Java process or TCP 25565 through the computer’s firewall.
- Start the server and wait for world generation and mod registration to finish.
- Give remote players your public address and port only after the local test succeeds.
Port forwarding exposes a service to the internet. Keep the operating system, Java runtime and pack files maintained, and do not run the server with broader permissions than necessary. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, a normal inbound forward may not work; a managed host or a network arrangement that supplies inbound access may be required.
Install the matching client
Each player should install Minecraft Java Edition 1.16.5 and the same All of Fabric 3 release used by the server. A client on a newer pack build can be refused during connection or can lack content that the server expects. Match the release number, not merely the words “All of Fabric 3.”
- Install the modpack through the launcher method recommended on its project page.
- Confirm that the Minecraft version is 1.16.5.
- Do not add or remove mods casually. A mod that is client-only belongs on the client, while a mod required by the server must be present on the server and clients as appropriate.
- Enter the server’s local address on a home network or its public address from outside the network, including a non-default port if you changed it.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over files and costs no recurring hosting subscription beyond the machine and internet connection, but you are responsible for Java, Fabric, memory, networking and backups. A managed Minecraft host can automate installation of the server pack, Fabric loader and Java; the cited hosting page describes that automation and states that it is not affiliated with the pack authors or Mojang. Compare the operational responsibilities before choosing.
| Decision area | Self-hosted server | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Files and mods | Full filesystem and configuration control | Control depends on the host’s panel and file access |
| Setup effort | You install Java, the pack and Fabric yourself | Pack, loader and Java installation may be automated |
| Java and loader maintenance | Your responsibility | Often handled by the provider, subject to its supported versions |
| RAM scaling | Limited by your machine’s physical memory | Changed by selecting a plan or resizing the instance |
| Port and firewall administration | You configure the router and host firewall | The provider normally supplies an exposed game port |
| Backups | You create and test them | Availability and retention depend on the provider |
| Recurring cost | No hosting subscription, but hardware and bandwidth still have costs | Recurring charge determined by the selected service |
Regardless of the option, verify that the service supports the exact All of Fabric 3 release and Minecraft 1.16.5 before moving an existing world. Automation does not remove the need to keep a copy of the world and configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Back up and update safely
- Stop the server cleanly from its console.
- Copy the world directory, configuration files, mod list and server properties to storage outside the live server directory.
- Record the current All of Fabric 3 release and Fabric loader version.
- Install an update in a separate test directory when possible.
- Start the test copy, verify that the world loads and check the first startup errors before replacing the live files.
- Keep the previous copy until players have connected successfully and you have confirmed that inventories, dimensions and mod content are intact.
Never test an unverified modpack update directly on the only copy of a long-running world. A backup is useful only if you know which files to restore and have confirmed that it can be opened.

Troubleshoot a failed startup or connection
Java-version error
Run java -version in the same account and environment that runs the server. If it is not Java 8, correct the default runtime or edit the start script to call the Java 8 executable. Installing another JDK without changing the command does not solve the problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe server exits immediately or says files are missing
Confirm that you downloaded the dedicated server pack and extracted it completely. The client ZIP is a manifest and cannot substitute for the server archive. Check for the Fabric launcher, server.jar when using the manual method, and the supplied start script.
Client-only mod errors
Read the first mod-related error in the console rather than the final cascade of messages. Remove client-only mods from the dedicated server, then restart. Keep the client’s required visual or interface mods on the client if the pack documentation identifies them as client-side.
Loader or Minecraft mismatch
Verify that the loader and Minecraft version selected during Fabric installation are 1.16.5-compatible and that the server and clients use the same pack release. A newer client can be refused or can miss content expected by the server.
Out-of-memory or severe lag
Check the heap value in the start command and compare it with the published planning figures. Increase memory only when the host has enough unused RAM. If the machine is swapping, reduce other workloads or move the server to a larger instance instead of assigning nearly all physical memory to Java.
Players cannot connect from outside
Test locally first. Then verify the server’s listening port, the operating-system firewall rule, the router’s TCP 25565 forward and the address players are using. If local connections work but outside connections fail, the issue is generally network reachability rather than the modpack. Carrier-grade NAT can prevent inbound connections even when the router rule is correct.
What to read first in logs
Capture the first startup error and the lines immediately before it. Later “caused by” messages are often consequences of the original failure. Include the Java version, All of Fabric 3 release, Minecraft version and Fabric loader version when asking for help; those four details narrow the diagnosis considerably.
Quick Recap
Final launch checklist
- Java reports version 8.
- The extracted files came from the dedicated server pack, not the client ZIP.
- Minecraft and Fabric are set to 1.16.5-compatible versions.
- The start script or launcher uses the intended
-Xmxvalue. - You launched once, set
eula=true, and launched again. - The console completed registration and world generation without an unresolved error.
- TCP 25565 is allowed through the firewall and forwarded when remote players need access.
- Every client has the identical All of Fabric 3 release.
- A recoverable copy of the world and configuration exists before inviting players.
