To set up Alexa on a compatible Amazon Fire tablet, use the main profile, then open Settings > Alexa and turn on Alexa and Hands-Free Mode. Show Mode is a separate, model-specific option. You can also turn off wake-word access, review or delete Alexa activity, and adjust Fire tablet data and advertising settings independently.

Check your Fire tablet and profile first

“Amazon Alexa tablet” usually means an Amazon Fire tablet with Alexa features. Alexa features require the tablet’s main profile; secondary profiles, including child profiles, cannot use them. Show Mode has its own compatibility requirements, so do not assume that a newer Fire tablet supports it.

Amazon’s current Show Mode help page lists the following supported and unsupported combinations. These are Amazon’s compatibility details; verify the tablet’s exact generation and software version before relying on Show Mode.

Turn on Alexa and hands-free access

  1. Switch to the tablet’s main profile.
  2. Open Settings > Alexa.
  3. Turn on Alexa and Hands-Free Mode.
  4. Check how the tablet handles hands-free availability. Depending on the model, Amazon says it may be ready only while the screen is on, while connected to power, or while in Show Mode.

With Hands-Free Mode enabled, you can use the wake word to make a request. To invoke Alexa manually outside Show Mode, hold the Home button; manual access remains available even when hands-free access is disabled. Amazon’s Fire tablet Alexa help describes the settings and access options.

Use Show Mode if the tablet supports it

Show Mode provides a full-screen Alexa experience. To turn it on, swipe down from the home screen to open Quick Actions and tap the Show Mode control, or say “Alexa, switch to Show Mode.” To leave Show Mode, use its Quick Actions control or say “Alexa, exit Show Mode.” See Amazon’s Show Mode instructions and compatibility list.

Show Mode may wake the screen after the tablet detects the wake word or motion in view of its camera, as well as after screen or button interaction. Consider that behavior before using it in a shared room. For a passcode-locked tablet, some Alexa features remain accessible while others require the passcode. Amazon documents Settings > Alexa > Trusted Networks as a way to reduce passcode prompts on a trusted Wi-Fi network; a passcode may still be needed to exit Show Mode.

Choose how Alexa can listen and manage recordings

What wake-word detection and streaming mean

Amazon says Fire tablet Alexa uses on-device keyword spotting to detect the wake word. When it detects the wake word, it streams audio to Amazon’s cloud for processing, including a fraction of a second of audio from before the wake word. Amazon says a blue line appears while audio is streaming; its help material also describes a short tone at the beginning and end of the stream. This describes wake-word detection followed by streaming of a detected request, not continuous transmission of all room audio.

Amazon says Fire tablet Alexa interactions are encrypted in transit and that a blue light bar appears while Alexa is recording and sending a request. The indicator shows when a request is being sent; it does not change the distinction between on-device wake-word spotting and subsequent streaming.

Turn off hands-free wake-word access

To stop the tablet responding to the wake word, use any of these controls:

  • Open Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode and switch it off.
  • Use the Alexa control in Quick Actions.
  • Hold both volume buttons for three seconds.

A red bar or icon in Show Mode, or a status icon outside Show Mode, indicates that hands-free access is off. Outside Show Mode, you can still open Alexa manually by holding the Home button.

Review or delete Alexa activity

Amazon’s broader Alexa guidance says you can review and delete recordings, text transcripts, and typed requests associated with your account in the Alexa app under More > Alexa Privacy, or through Amazon’s Alexa privacy settings. App labels can change. Amazon also says you can ask Alexa to delete the last utterance or everything said that day.

Deleting recordings can limit personalization or stop some features from working. For example, Amazon says Voice ID will not work if recordings are not saved. For Fire tablet recording and privacy details, see Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs, “Alexa on Fire Tablets FAQs”.

Adjust Fire tablet data, advertising, and location settings

These Fire tablet controls are separate from Alexa hands-free access and recording history. Amazon says the settings are configurable by profile and device, so check each tablet and each applicable profile. The menu labels below are Amazon’s documented paths; they may vary with software updates.

Setting and path What switching it off or changing it does What it does not do
Device Usage Data
Settings > Security & Privacy > Device Usage Data
Stops processing this device usage data for customized marketing offers and product improvement purposes. It does not stop processing needed for tablet functions, syncing, or backup; remove offers already associated with some devices; disable other interest-based advertising data; or cover data relating to Amazon services such as Prime Video.
Collect App Usage Data
Settings > Apps & Games > Collect App Usage Data
Controls Amazon’s collection of data about opening, closing, and duration of use of third-party apps. It is not a control for Alexa wake-word access or Alexa recordings.
Interest-Based Ads
Settings > Apps & Games > Advertising ID > Interest-Based Ads
Lets you instruct apps not to use the resettable Advertising ID to build advertising profiles or show interest-based ads on the device. It is not a universal opt-out from all advertising or data processing.
Location-Based Services
Settings > Wireless > Location-Based Services
Turns off location access for the device or for individual apps. It does not change the Alexa recording or hands-free controls.

Amazon says some device privacy settings may also be managed from the account’s Manage Your Content and Devices area under Privacy Settings > Amazon Devices Privacy. For the settings’ scope, see Amazon’s Privacy Settings FAQs for Fire TV Products, Fire Tablets and Kindle E-readers.
