Set up two separate layers of notification: X account and post alerts for routine updates, plus an independent outage-monitoring channel for periods when X itself may be unreachable. On a phone, configure global push permissions under Settings and privacy → Notifications → Preferences → Push notifications, then enable alerts on each important account from its profile. On X.com, use Settings → Web notifications and, in supported Chrome or Firefox configurations, turn on browser notifications. These X-controlled alerts are preferences, not guaranteed real-time delivery; if X’s own notification service is impaired, they can be delayed or fail.
Choose the right alert path first
X has separate controls for general activity and for posts from a particular account. General push or web settings decide which categories X may notify you about. The notification control on an account profile decides whether that account’s posts or live video should trigger alerts. You need both settings enabled for dependable coverage of an important source.

For a small number of critical accounts, use per-account alerts and keep broad categories limited. That reduces noise while preserving the updates most likely to matter during a service disruption.
Turn on mobile push notifications
Configure X’s global push preferences
Use the following path in the X mobile app. Labels can move slightly between app versions, but the sequence is the one documented by X:

- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Open Notifications.
- Tap Preferences.
- Open Push notifications.
- Select the notification categories you want.
The available list can include account activity such as mentions, replies, reposts, likes, new followers, and direct messages. X also lists broader categories such as recommendations, news, Spaces, crisis and emergency alerts, and other activity. The exact set can change by platform and over time, so select only the categories that serve your purpose.
These settings are global preferences. Turning on push notifications does not automatically subscribe you to every account’s posts. To receive an alert whenever a particular account publishes, use the separate profile-level control described next.
Subscribe to posts from one account
For each account whose updates you cannot afford to miss:

- Open the account’s profile.
- Tap the notification icon on that profile.
- Choose All posts for alerts about the account’s posts, or Only posts with live video if live broadcasts are the only events you need.
To remove that account’s alerts, return to the same notification control and select None. The app’s Push notifications settings also include a Posts area for reviewing alerts associated with followed accounts.
Use this control selectively. Turning it on for every account you follow can produce more interruptions than you can evaluate during a fast-moving incident. A short list of official, operational, or otherwise authoritative accounts is easier to monitor and less likely to hide a significant post among routine activity.
Check the phone’s permission separately
X cannot display a push alert if the operating system blocks notifications, even when the preference inside X is enabled. In the phone’s system settings, find X in the app list and confirm that notifications are allowed. Also check whether a device-wide focus, do-not-disturb, battery-saving, or notification-summary mode is suppressing or postponing alerts. The exact names and locations differ by operating-system version, so use the notification settings search on the device if necessary.
If alerts still do not appear, revisit both layers: X’s Push notifications page and the phone’s permission screen. X links to iOS-specific troubleshooting from its mobile-notification help, but its published guidance does not promise a delivery time or explain every operating-system cause of a missed alert.

Configure notifications on X.com
On a computer:
- Log in to X.com.
- Open the profile menu.
- Select Settings.
- Open Web notifications.
- Choose the notification categories you want.
- Set the audience, such as accounts you follow or By anyone, according to the level of activity you need.
- Save the changes.
Web notifications appear while you are logged in to X.com. They are useful when you work primarily in a desktop session and want activity collected in the site’s notification interface rather than relying only on your phone.
The audience choice changes the breadth of the feed, not the reliability of delivery. Selecting By anyone can expose you to substantially more activity than limiting notifications to accounts you follow, so use the narrower option unless your role requires a broad view.

Allow browser notifications outside the site
In the same Web notifications area, use Turn on browser notifications if that option is available. Your browser will then ask for permission; allow notifications for X when prompted. X describes this away-from-the-site behavior for supported Chrome or Firefox setups.
There are two permissions to verify: the switch inside X and the browser’s own permission for the X site. If either one is disabled, no desktop pop-up will appear. Browser privacy settings, notification-blocking extensions, operating-system focus modes, and multiple browser profiles can also affect where a permitted alert is shown.

Match the setup to your outage-warning goal
Use account alerts for specific sources
Account-level alerts are the most focused option. Enable All posts only for accounts that publish operational updates, incident notices, or other information you genuinely need immediately. Choose Only posts with live video when a live broadcast is the relevant event and ordinary posts would create unnecessary interruptions.
This approach gives you a short, controllable list. It does not make X a general outage detector; it only asks X to notify you about activity from selected accounts.
Use broad categories sparingly
Global mobile and web preferences cover more than posts from one account. Mentions, replies, direct messages, recommendations, news, Spaces, and similar categories can be useful, but enabling everything may bury an important operational post in unrelated activity. Start with the categories that correspond to your actual workflow, then add another category only if a missed event justifies the additional noise.
Separate “must interrupt me” alerts from information you can review later. For example, a small set of account post alerts may be appropriate for immediate incident notices, while recommendations or general news can remain off until you have time to check them. X’s controls let you revise these choices without removing the account from your followed list.
Understand the outage-resilience difference

Do not treat an X post alert as proof that you will learn when X is down. X says it may not notify users every time there is activity related to them or their posts, and an outage can affect the service that generates or delivers the alert.
Add a separate channel for outage detection
X’s help material refers users to its status site for some temporary account-limit changes during periods of heavy usage. That reference does not establish that the status site publishes every outage or offers a subscriber alert service. It is therefore useful as a page to check when you can reach it, but it should not be described as a guaranteed push-alert subscription.

An independent monitoring service can complement your X settings. For example, IsDown describes monitoring X’s official status information and user reports and sending alerts. That is the provider’s description, not an independent guarantee of coverage, speed, or reliability. Before depending on any such service, check:

- Whether detection uses official status information, user reports, automated checks, or a combination.
- Which alert channels are currently supported.
- How it handles false positives, resolved incidents, and maintenance.
- Whether the service itself has an outage or delivery delay.
Use the independent channel as a second path, not as a replacement for account-level alerts. Its value is that it does not rely exclusively on X’s notification pipeline; it still has its own operational limits.
Keep the monitor’s contact details and status-page address somewhere you can reach without opening X. If the monitor offers more than one delivery method, consider enabling a channel that does not share the same device or browser dependency as your X alerts. Confirm the provider’s current options first, because supported channels and coverage can change.
Prepare and verify the configuration before an incident
- List priority accounts. Decide which official or operational accounts matter enough to interrupt you.
- Enable the profile alert. On each priority profile, choose All posts or Only posts with live video.
- Review global push categories. Keep only the mobile categories that support your use case.
- Enable desktop coverage if needed. Configure Web notifications, then turn on browser notifications in a supported browser.
- Confirm device and browser permissions. Make sure the operating system and browser both allow X notifications.
- Set up an independent monitor. Select a provider only after checking its current coverage and channels.
- Record the recovery path. Keep the status-site address and monitoring-provider details somewhere accessible if X is unavailable.
Review this configuration after changing phones, reinstalling the app, switching browsers, or signing into a different browser profile. Those changes can reset permissions even though the choices inside your X account remain unchanged.
Check the setup when you are calm rather than during an incident. Open each relevant settings page, confirm the account-level choice, and verify that the device or browser still grants permission. A configuration review cannot guarantee delivery, but it can catch the common mistake of enabling only one of the two required layers.

Troubleshoot missing alerts
First decide whether the problem is local or widespread
A missing alert alone does not prove an outage. The account may not have posted, X may have decided not to send an alert, or a phone or browser setting may have suppressed it. Check whether X.com loads, whether other notifications work, and whether the problem occurs on more than one device or connection.
Compare the symptoms before changing settings repeatedly. If only one phone is affected, inspect that phone’s permissions first. If the web session works but browser pop-ups do not, inspect the browser permission. If X fails across devices and an independent monitor reports an incident, the problem is more likely widespread, although no single signal is conclusive.
If mobile alerts are absent
- Open the account profile and confirm its notification icon is set to All posts or Only posts with live video, rather than None.
- Return to Settings and privacy → Notifications → Preferences → Push notifications and verify the relevant category.
- In the phone’s system settings, allow notifications for X.
- Check device-wide focus, do-not-disturb, battery, and notification-summary controls.
- Check whether the alert arrived silently or in a notification history area instead of as a banner.
X does not promise exact delivery timing, so a delay is not by itself evidence that the account or the platform is down.
If web or browser alerts are absent
- In X.com, reopen Settings → Web notifications and confirm the categories and audience.
- Confirm that browser notifications were enabled with Turn on browser notifications.
- Open the browser’s site-permission settings and allow notifications for X.
- Check the operating system’s notification and focus settings.
- Verify that you are using the browser profile where the permission was granted and, for X.com notifications, that you are logged in.
If X.com will not load
Do not assume every access problem is a platform-wide outage. X recommends checking the network connection and trying common browser troubleshooting steps:

- Try a private or incognito window.
- Update the browser.
- Clear the browser cache and cookies.
- Disable extensions that could interfere with page loading.
- Retry over another network if one is available.
While X is inaccessible, use the independent monitoring channel or check the status information you have saved. Remember that an X-generated push or browser alert is not an independent path when X’s own systems are impaired.
