To set up AirPods with an iPhone, turn on Bluetooth, open the charging case with both earbuds inside, hold it next to the iPhone, and follow the onscreen Connect flow. If the animation does not appear, pair them manually from Bluetooth settings. When connection fails, start with charging, Bluetooth, audio-output selection, and a second pairing attempt; reset the AirPods only after those checks.

Before you start: identify the model and the device

The correct pairing and reset gesture depends on the AirPods model. The case control is not interchangeable between generations, and AirPods Max use controls on the headphones rather than a charging-case button. Identify the model before entering pairing or reset mode.

  • Button-equipped charging cases: Older AirPods and AirPods Pro cases commonly use a setup button on the back.
  • Newer cases with front-case controls: Some newer models use taps on the front of the case instead of the traditional rear button.
  • AirPods Max: Pairing and reset are started with a control on the headphones.

Also note which device you are connecting to: an iPhone or iPad, a Mac, or a non-Apple Bluetooth device. Apple’s setup requirements and the available automatic features can vary by model and operating-system version, so install available device updates before troubleshooting.

A quick preparation checklist

  • Keep the AirPods, case, and device close together during setup.
  • Make sure both earbuds are in the case and seated on their charging contacts.
  • Know whether the device is an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android phone, Windows computer, or another Bluetooth host.
  • Check for operating-system updates. A model may require a newer system version for all of its setup features.
  • Have the device unlocked when using the nearby setup prompt, and keep Bluetooth settings available in case manual pairing is needed.

These checks prevent a common mistake: applying instructions for a button-equipped case to a case that uses front taps, or assuming that an Apple-only setup animation must appear on a non-Apple device.

Set up AirPods with an iPhone or iPad

Use the normal setup animation

  1. Open Settings and verify that Bluetooth is on.
  2. Put both AirPods in their charging case and open the lid.
  3. Hold the open case next to the unlocked iPhone or iPad.
  4. When the setup card appears, tap Connect and complete any onscreen instructions.
  5. Leave the AirPods near the device until setup finishes, then play audio to confirm the connection.

The earbuds should remain in the case during the initial prompt. If the device asks for a software update or shows a different instruction for your model, follow that model-specific flow rather than trying a gesture intended for another generation.

Opening the lid by itself is not the same as putting the AirPods into manual pairing mode. The nearby prompt may appear during ordinary setup, while a device that has never been paired may need the case or headphone control used to make the AirPods discoverable. Follow the prompt first; use the model-specific pairing control only when the prompt or Bluetooth list requires it.

If the animation does not appear

You can pair the AirPods manually. Keep the earbuds in the open case, put the case into pairing mode using the control appropriate to your model, and then open Settings > Bluetooth. Select the AirPods when they appear under the list of available devices. For AirPods Max, use the headphone pairing control and select them from the same Bluetooth list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the AirPods do not appear, close the lid, wait briefly, reopen it near the iPhone or iPad, and try pairing mode again. Do not reset them yet; first complete the charging and Bluetooth checks in the troubleshooting ladder below. If an old AirPods entry is visible, do not repeatedly select it while the case is not in pairing mode; that can leave the device trying to use a stale connection record.

What the iPhone or iPad should show

A successful setup normally leaves the AirPods available as an audio destination. Test with a short piece of audio and look at the playback destination controls if sound continues through the phone or tablet speaker. A completed setup does not guarantee that the AirPods are currently selected for every app or that another nearby Apple device has not taken the audio route.

What changes after setup on Apple devices

After AirPods are set up with one Apple device, Apple says they can connect automatically to supported Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. This is an account-based convenience, not a promise that the AirPods will play from every device simultaneously. The device still has to support the AirPods model and have Bluetooth available.

If you use several Apple devices, select the AirPods as the audio destination on the device you actually want to hear. Automatic availability does not prevent another device from currently holding the audio connection. If an iPad or Mac is listed as available but audio comes from the iPhone, choose the AirPods from the active device’s playback destination rather than resetting them.

Automatic account-based availability also should not be used as a diagnostic shortcut for a first pairing. Establish one working Bluetooth connection first. If the model or operating-system requirements are not met on another device, that device may not offer the same automatic behavior even though the AirPods work elsewhere.

Pair AirPods with a Mac

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth and switch Bluetooth on if necessary.
  3. Put the AirPods in pairing mode. Use the rear setup button on models that have one, the front-case control on models that use it, or the headphone control on AirPods Max.
  4. When the AirPods appear in the nearby-device list, select them and choose the command to connect.
  5. Play a sound and, if necessary, choose the AirPods from the Mac’s sound-output menu.

The exact pairing gesture is model-dependent, so a missing rear button is not evidence that the AirPods are defective. Check which control your case or headphones provide and use that control to make the device discoverable.

Mac Bluetooth can show a device as known while the Mac still sends sound to its internal speakers. Treat discovery and audio routing as separate checks: first confirm that AirPods are connected in Bluetooth settings, then open the Mac’s sound-output controls and select them. This distinction often resolves a “connected but silent” report without a reset.

Pair AirPods with Android and other Bluetooth devices

  1. Open the other device’s Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Put the AirPods into pairing mode with the model-specific case or headphone control.
  3. Select the AirPods from the device’s list of available Bluetooth devices.
  4. Confirm the connection, then start playback and adjust the device volume.

AirPods can function as a Bluetooth headset with a non-Apple device. Apple’s user guide states that Siri is unavailable in that arrangement, and Apple-specific account features should not be assumed to work the same way as they do between supported Apple devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The absence of an Apple-style animation on Android, Windows, or another Bluetooth host is expected. Use that device’s Bluetooth list instead. If the AirPods were previously connected to a different host, disconnect or forget the old entry when necessary, then place the AirPods into the correct pairing mode and search again.

After pairing, test both playback and the device volume. A Bluetooth connection can be present while the host is muted, routed to another output, or still showing a previous accessory as the active destination.

Fix AirPods that will not connect: the safest troubleshooting order

Work through these checks in order. Each step is low risk and can identify a simple cause before you remove pairings or reset hardware. Avoid jumping directly to reset instructions just because the setup card is missing.

1. Confirm that both earbuds are charging

  • Place both AirPods firmly in the case and close the lid.
  • Check that each earbud is seated correctly rather than resting above its charging contact.
  • Give the case and earbuds enough charge to complete a connection attempt.
  • If one earbud is not charging, remove it and reseat it, then check again before pairing.

A case that is nearly empty, or an earbud that is not making contact, can make a Bluetooth problem look like a software failure. Resolve charging first. If only one side is charged, a connection attempt may be mistaken for a one-earbud hardware fault when the immediate problem is simply contact in the case.

2. Verify Bluetooth and software

On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth and confirm Bluetooth is enabled. On a Mac, use System Settings > Bluetooth. On Android or another device, use that device’s Bluetooth settings. Keep the AirPods close while testing and install available operating-system updates; Apple’s setup guidance lists model-specific system requirements.

Check Bluetooth on the device you are actually using, not only on a second Apple device. If you switch from an iPhone to a Mac or Android phone, each host must have Bluetooth enabled and must complete its own pairing flow. Updating the host before repeating the test also avoids chasing a compatibility issue that an available system update may address.

3. Select the AirPods as the audio output

Sometimes the AirPods are connected but the device is sending sound to its built-in speaker or another accessory. If the AirPods appear in the available audio destinations, select them and play audio with the device volume raised. On a Mac, use the sound-output controls; on an iPhone or iPad, select the AirPods from the playback destination controls.

Test with a known audio source after selecting them. Do not treat the absence of sound alone as proof that Bluetooth pairing failed: connection status and output selection are separate states. If the AirPods disappear from the destination list, return to Bluetooth settings and repeat the connection attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Try the connection again

Return the AirPods to the case, close the lid, wait briefly, and reopen it near the device. Follow the normal setup prompt if it appears. If it does not, enter pairing mode using the correct model-specific control and select the AirPods from Bluetooth settings.

Retrying after the case has been closed gives the device a clean opportunity to rediscover the earbuds. Keep both earbuds in the case during the pairing attempt and avoid moving out of range while the device is searching. If the list shows several similarly named entries, select the AirPods entry that appears after you intentionally enter pairing mode.

5. Remove the old pairing only when necessary

If the AirPods are listed but refuse to connect, remove or forget that Bluetooth entry on the device, then put the AirPods back into pairing mode and pair them as a new accessory. This discards the device’s saved connection record; it does not replace the model-specific reset procedure.

Forgetting an entry is more disruptive than simply selecting the audio output, so reserve it for a repeated connection failure. Once the entry is removed, do not expect automatic reconnection until you complete pairing again. If the fresh pairing still fails after the charging and Bluetooth checks, move to the matching reset procedure rather than repeating forget-and-pair indefinitely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset AirPods only after the basic checks

A reset clears the AirPods’ pairing state and is more disruptive than toggling Bluetooth or selecting a different audio output. Use the procedure for the exact model. Newer front-control cases and AirPods Max do not use the same sequence as older button-equipped cases.

Older models with a setup button on the case

  1. Close the charging-case lid and wait briefly.
  2. On the phone or computer, remove the existing AirPods pairing if it is still listed.
  3. Open the case with the earbuds inside.
  4. Press and hold the case setup button until the status light flashes amber and then white.
  5. Pair the AirPods again from the device’s Bluetooth settings or the iPhone setup prompt.

The amber-then-white light sequence indicates that the case has entered its reset and pairing state. Release the button after the sequence rather than continuing to hold it indefinitely. If the light never reaches the expected sequence, stop and verify that the case actually has a rear setup button and that it has enough charge.

Newer cases with front-case controls

Use the front-case tap sequence specified for your model. Do not substitute the rear-button procedure if your case has no setup button. Put the earbuds in the case, open the lid when instructed by the model’s setup guide, perform the required front taps, and wait for the status light to indicate pairing mode before selecting the AirPods on the device.

Because front-control gestures vary by model, avoid guessing the number or timing of taps. A sequence intended for another generation may do nothing or leave the case in an ordinary charging state. Identify the exact model first and follow the corresponding Apple instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AirPods Max

Use the control on the headphones specified for AirPods Max to enter pairing or reset mode. Keep the headphones close to the phone, tablet, Mac, or other Bluetooth device while the status light changes, then select AirPods Max from the Bluetooth list. A charging-case button procedure does not apply to this model.

Pair again after a reset

Once the model-specific reset is complete, leave the AirPods near the device and repeat the appropriate setup flow. On an iPhone or iPad, use the open-case Connect prompt if it appears; otherwise use Settings > Bluetooth. On a Mac or non-Apple device, select the reset AirPods from the Bluetooth list.

Resetting is not the final pairing step. A reset removes the previous pairing state, so the device must discover and connect to the AirPods again. Test playback after the fresh pairing and select the AirPods as the output if the host continues to use its speaker.

Symptoms and the right next action

Symptom First action If it continues
The setup card never appears on an iPhone or iPad Confirm Bluetooth is on, both earbuds are charging, and the open case is next to the device. Use manual pairing in Bluetooth settings with the model-specific pairing control.
AirPods appear but will not connect Check the charge, select AirPods as the audio output, and retry. Forget the saved pairing, then pair again; reset only if that fails.
Connected but no sound Select AirPods as the audio destination and raise the device volume. Close and reopen the case, then reconnect.
Only one earbud works Reseat both earbuds in the case and verify that both are charging. Retry pairing; if the problem persists, use the correct model reset procedure.
The AirPods are missing from an Android or other Bluetooth list Enable Bluetooth and enter model-specific pairing mode again. Reset with the matching procedure, then search again.
A reset instruction does not match the hardware Identify whether the case has a rear button, a front-case control, or whether the product is AirPods Max. Use the instructions for that exact model rather than forcing a different gesture.

How to interpret the most common combinations

  • Not visible and no status response: Check case charge and earbud seating before assuming a Bluetooth fault.
  • Visible but repeatedly refused: Select the AirPods as output, retry, then forget the saved entry before resetting.
  • Connected on one device but not another: Confirm Bluetooth and software requirements on the second host; automatic Apple Account availability is not universal across every device.
  • One side missing: Check that each earbud is charging in its own slot, then retry pairing so the host can rediscover both.
  • Instructions conflict with the hardware: Stop and identify the model instead of trying every button or tap sequence.

When to stop troubleshooting and request service

If both earbuds are charged, Bluetooth is enabled, the device software is current, the AirPods have been selected as the audio output, pairing has been retried, and the correct model-specific reset still does not solve the problem, use Apple’s support and service options. Do not open the case, replace internal parts, or follow an unverified hardware-repair procedure as a next step. A service provider can determine whether the persistent failure is a hardware issue and explain the available repair or replacement path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When contacting support, have the AirPods model, the device and operating-system version, the steps already tried, and whether both earbuds charge. That information helps separate a pairing-state problem from a charging or hardware fault. Note whether the failure occurs on one host or on every compatible device, and whether the AirPods appear in Bluetooth at all; those observations make the service conversation more precise.

Practical checklist

  • Identify the AirPods model and the device you are pairing.
  • Update the phone, tablet, Mac, or other Bluetooth device when an update is available.
  • Charge the case and confirm that both earbuds are seated and charging.
  • Turn on Bluetooth and keep the AirPods close during setup.
  • On an iPhone or iPad, open the case near the device and follow Connect when prompted.
  • If no prompt appears, pair manually from Bluetooth settings.
  • Select AirPods as the audio output before diagnosing a no-sound problem.
  • Forget the old pairing only when a normal reconnect fails.
  • Reset only with the gesture for your case or AirPods Max control.
  • Use Apple service options if a correct reset and fresh pairing still fail.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my AirPods not show the iPhone setup animation?

First confirm that Bluetooth is enabled, both earbuds are charging in the case, and the open case is next to the iPhone or iPad. Close and reopen the lid, then try the model-specific pairing control. If the card still does not appear, pair manually through Settings > Bluetooth.

Can I set up AirPods without an iPhone?

Yes. AirPods can pair with a Mac, Android phone, Windows computer, or another Bluetooth device. Turn on Bluetooth on that device, put the AirPods into the correct pairing mode, and select them from the available-device list. The Apple-style nearby animation is not required.

Will Siri work when AirPods are paired with Android?

No. Apple’s user guide says Siri is unavailable when AirPods are used as a Bluetooth headset with a non-Apple device. Basic Bluetooth listening and headset functions can still work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why are my AirPods connected but playing no sound?

The host may still be using its built-in speaker or another accessory. Open the playback or sound-output controls, select the AirPods, and raise the device volume. If they are not listed as an output, close and reopen the case and retry the Bluetooth connection.

Should I forget the AirPods before resetting them?

For older button-equipped models, Apple’s reset sequence includes removing the existing pairing when it is still listed, then opening the case and holding the setup button until the light flashes amber and white. For other models, follow the exact instructions for that hardware. Forgetting a device entry alone is not a reset.

How do I know which reset instructions apply?

Look at the hardware. A rear setup button indicates an older button-equipped case; a newer case may use front-case taps; AirPods Max use a control on the headphones. Do not force a rear-button sequence onto a case that has no such button.

Can AirPods automatically connect to all my Apple devices at once?

After setup, Apple says AirPods can connect automatically to supported devices signed in to the same Apple Account. That does not mean they play audio from every device simultaneously. Select the AirPods as the output on the device you want to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if only one AirPod works?

Put both earbuds in the case, reseat them, and verify that each one is charging. Retry the connection and select the AirPods as the audio output. If one side remains unavailable, use the correct model-specific reset procedure, then pair again.

When should I contact Apple instead of trying another reset?

Contact Apple support or service after you have confirmed charging, Bluetooth, software updates, output selection, a fresh pairing attempt, and the correct reset for the model. Persistent failure after those steps may require service rather than another unverified hardware procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my AirPods not show the iPhone setup animation?

Confirm Bluetooth is on, both earbuds are charging, and the open case is beside the iPhone or iPad. Reopen the lid and try the correct pairing control; otherwise pair manually in Settings > Bluetooth.

Can I use AirPods with Android or Windows?

Yes. Enable Bluetooth, enter model-specific pairing mode, and select the AirPods from the device list. Siri is unavailable with non-Apple devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why are AirPods connected but silent?

Select AirPods as the active audio output and raise the host device’s volume. If they are missing from the output list, close and reopen the case and reconnect.

Should I forget AirPods before resetting them?

For older button-equipped models, remove the existing pairing when listed, then use the reset sequence. For newer cases or AirPods Max, follow the exact model instructions; forgetting alone is not a reset.

How do I identify the right reset procedure?

A rear setup button indicates an older case; newer cases may use front taps, while AirPods Max use a headphone control. Match the procedure to the hardware.

Can AirPods automatically connect to every Apple device at once?

They can connect automatically to supported Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account, but they do not play from every device simultaneously. Choose the desired audio output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if only one AirPod works?

Reseat both earbuds in the case and verify both charge, then retry pairing. If the problem remains, use the matching model reset and pair again.

When should I request service?

After charging, Bluetooth, software, output selection, retry, and a correct model-specific reset all fail, contact Apple support or service instead of opening the hardware.

The Bottom Line

Identify the model first, charge both earbuds, enable Bluetooth, and select AirPods as the audio output. Retry pairing before forgetting the device; reset only with the control sequence for that exact case or AirPods Max. If a fresh pairing still fails after those checks, use Apple support and service options.
