To set up AirPods 4 (ANC) with an iPhone, place both earbuds in their open charging case, hold the case beside the iPhone, tap Connect in the setup animation, follow the prompts, and tap Done. If the animation does not appear, open the case, double-tap its front until the status light flashes white, then choose the AirPods in Settings > Bluetooth.
After pairing, wear the earbuds and open their settings to decide what pressing and holding the left or right stem does. On the ANC version, that gesture can switch listening modes or activate Siri. The same settings also let you use Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, and Adaptive Audio.
Confirm that you have AirPods 4 (ANC)
Apple sells two versions of AirPods 4. The standard AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 (ANC) share the basic stem controls, but the noise-control features in this guide apply only to the ANC model. Look for the ANC designation in the product name shown on the box, receipt, or connected-device settings.

What to prepare before pairing
Start from the iPhone Home Screen. Put both AirPods 4 (ANC) in the charging case and leave the lid open. Keep the open case close to the iPhone while pairing. The earbuds do not need to be in your ears for initial setup.
- Make sure the case and earbuds have enough charge to remain on during setup.
- Keep the AirPods in the case for the automatic setup animation and for manual pairing.
- Use the iPhone on which you want to manage the AirPods. If you are signed in to iCloud, Apple says the AirPods are set up automatically with supported devices using the same Apple Account.
Set up AirPods 4 (ANC) automatically with an iPhone
- Open the case with both AirPods inside. Hold the open case next to the iPhone while the phone is on the Home Screen.
- Wait for the setup animation. When it appears, tap Connect.
- Complete the on-screen prompts. Follow each instruction shown by the iPhone rather than closing the lid or moving the case away.
- Finish setup. Tap Done when the iPhone indicates that setup is complete.
Once this process finishes, the AirPods should be available from the iPhone’s Bluetooth and AirPods settings. When the same Apple Account is used on supported devices, Apple’s automatic setup can make the AirPods available there without repeating the entire pairing process.
Pair manually when the animation does not appear
Manual pairing uses the front of the AirPods 4 case rather than a rear pairing button.
- Leave both AirPods in the case and open the lid.
- Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Wait for the AirPods to appear in the device list, then tap their name.
The white flashing light indicates that the case is ready to be discovered. If the AirPods do not appear, close and reopen the lid, repeat the front double-tap until the white light returns, and look again in the Bluetooth list. Keep the case open and near the iPhone while you select it.
Check the connection before changing controls
Wear the AirPods after pairing and open the AirPods settings from the connected-device view. On current iPhone software, the AirPods name normally appears near the top of the Settings screen when they are connected. If you do not see it, open Settings > Bluetooth and select the connected AirPods entry before looking for their device settings.
The exact heading can vary. Look for a section named Press and Hold AirPods, or an equivalent Controls & Gestures area. The important controls are the separate Left and Right choices; each stem can have its own press-and-hold action.
Learn the basic stem gestures
AirPods 4 stems use distinct press counts. Press the stem itself rather than tapping the outside of the earbud.

| Gesture | Result |
|---|---|
| Press once | Play or pause media; answer an incoming call |
| Press twice | Skip to the next track |
| Press three times | Return to the previous track |

The single, double, and triple presses are separate from the customizable press-and-hold action. Changing the hold action does not change the media and call functions assigned to the other gestures.

Customize what pressing and holding does
- Put both earbuds in your ears and confirm that they are connected to the iPhone.
- Open Settings and tap the AirPods name near the top of the screen.
- Find Press and Hold AirPods. If your software uses a different layout, open Controls & Gestures.
- Tap Left or Right to configure that stem.
- Choose Listening Mode to cycle through noise-control modes, or choose Siri to use the hold gesture for the voice assistant.
- Repeat the process for the other stem if you want different actions on the left and right.
For example, you can assign the left stem to listening-mode changes and the right stem to Siri. You can also assign both stems the same action. If a stem is set to Siri, pressing and holding it will not switch listening modes until you change that assignment back to Listening Mode.
Understand the AirPods 4 (ANC) listening modes
Active Noise Cancellation
Active Noise Cancellation is the mode intended to reduce surrounding sound while you listen. It is one of the three listening modes documented for AirPods 4 (ANC).
Transparency
Transparency allows surrounding sound to be heard while you wear the earbuds. Use it when you need awareness of nearby voices or the environment without removing the AirPods.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Adaptive Audio
Adaptive Audio is the third ANC-model listening mode. It is available in the listening-mode controls alongside Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency.
These three names are specific to the ANC model’s noise-control feature set. A standard AirPods 4 pair should not be expected to show the same listening-mode menu.
Switch listening modes from the stems
First assign Listening Mode to the left or right stem using the steps above. Then press and hold that stem until you hear the confirmation chime. Each hold cycles through the listening modes selected in the AirPods settings.
If you do not hear a mode-change confirmation, check the following:
- The AirPods are connected and being worn.
- You configured the stem under the correct Left or Right setting.
- The press-and-hold action is Listening Mode, not Siri.
- You are using AirPods 4 (ANC), not the standard AirPods 4.
Switch listening modes from iPhone or iPad Control Center
- Open Control Center on the connected iPhone or iPad.
- Touch and hold the volume control.
- Choose the listening mode you want: Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, or Adaptive Audio.
This method does not depend on which stem is assigned to press-and-hold. It is useful when you want to change modes without cycling through them or when both stems are assigned to Siri.

Use Personalized Volume and Conversation Awareness
Personalized Volume
Apple documents Personalized Volume for AirPods 4 (ANC). Its availability is managed from the AirPods settings on supported Apple software. If the option appears in your settings, follow the on-screen instructions there; menu placement can change as operating-system releases evolve.
Conversation Awareness
Conversation Awareness is also documented for AirPods 4 (ANC). When the wearer begins speaking, it lowers media volume and enhances nearby voices. This behavior is different from manually selecting Transparency: Conversation Awareness responds to the wearer beginning a conversation, while the listening-mode menu is a deliberate choice among Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, and Adaptive Audio.
If you do not see either feature, verify the model name and check that the AirPods are connected before opening their settings. Apple’s labels and grouping may differ by software version.
Pair AirPods 4 (ANC) with a non-Apple Bluetooth device
AirPods 4 can pair with Android phones, Windows PCs, and other non-Apple Bluetooth devices. Apple says they can be used to listen and talk in this configuration, but Siri is unavailable.
- Put both AirPods in the case and open the lid.
- Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
- Open the other device’s Bluetooth settings and start a device search.
- Select the AirPods when they appear in the list and complete that device’s pairing prompt.
The case-front double-tap is the AirPods 4 pairing gesture on non-Apple hardware as well. Expect the basic listening and talking functions, but do not look for Apple-only Siri integration on that device.
Troubleshoot the most common setup problems
The setup animation never appears
Do not wait indefinitely for the animation. Keep both earbuds in the open case, double-tap the case front until the light flashes white, and use Settings > Bluetooth to select the AirPods manually.
The case does not enter pairing mode
Check that the lid is open and both AirPods are inside. Double-tap the front again, using two distinct taps, and continue until the status light flashes white. If the light is not flashing white, the iPhone or another Bluetooth device may not detect the pair yet.

The press-and-hold menu is missing
Make sure the AirPods are connected and that you opened their device settings rather than the general Bluetooth list. Look near the top of Settings for the AirPods name, then look for Press and Hold AirPods or Controls & Gestures. If the listening-mode choices are absent, verify that the model is AirPods 4 (ANC).
Press-and-hold opens Siri instead of changing noise control
Open the AirPods settings, select the affected stem under Press and Hold AirPods, and change its action from Siri to Listening Mode. The stem cannot perform both actions from the same press-and-hold assignment.
Siri is unavailable after pairing to another device
This is expected on non-Apple Bluetooth devices. Apple documents listening and talking support for that connection, but not Siri.

Keep the two control paths straight
There are two independent ways to change a listening mode. The stem method requires a press-and-hold assignment and then cycles through the modes selected for that gesture. Control Center lets you choose a mode directly after touching and holding the volume control. If you prefer Siri on both stems, Control Center remains the direct way to select Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, or Adaptive Audio.
Likewise, the regular media gestures do not disappear when you customize the hold gesture. One press still handles play, pause, or call answering; two presses move to the next track; and three presses return to the previous track. Only the press-and-hold action is reassigned.
Choose a mode list that fits your routine
When Listening Mode is selected for a stem, the settings can determine which listening modes that gesture cycles through. Include the modes you regularly use and leave the stem assigned to Siri if voice commands are more important. The exact arrangement of these choices can vary with the iPhone’s software, so use the labels shown on your screen rather than relying on an older menu layout.
For a simple two-stem setup, assign the left stem to Listening Mode and the right stem to Siri. This gives you a physical shortcut for changing noise control while preserving a separate hold gesture for the assistant. Assigning both stems to Listening Mode is also valid if you change modes frequently, and assigning both to Siri is useful when you rarely change noise control from the earbuds.

If you are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account on supported devices, Apple says the AirPods can be set up automatically on those devices after the initial setup. You may still need to select the AirPods as the active audio output on a particular device. If you move to a non-Apple Bluetooth device, use the case-front double-tap pairing process again and expect listening and talking support without Siri.

A practical control layout
There is no single correct assignment, but the following layout keeps the most frequently used actions easy to remember:
| Stem | Press-and-hold assignment | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Left | Listening Mode | Switch quickly between Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, and Adaptive Audio |
| Right | Siri | Invoke Siri without reaching for the iPhone |
Regardless of this layout, one press still plays or pauses media and answers calls, two presses skip forward, and three presses return to the previous track.
Final setup checklist
- The device name identifies the pair as AirPods 4 (ANC).
- Initial pairing completed through the iPhone animation, or manual pairing succeeded through Settings > Bluetooth.
- Both earbuds connect when removed from the case.
- The left and right press-and-hold actions are set intentionally.
