You can pair Ray-Ban Meta glasses and keep the most data-intensive features off. Install the Meta AI app, sign in, pair the glasses, then decide separately about camera-based AI, cloud media processing, voice controls and communication integrations. Leaving those options disabled removes some hands-free features, but it prevents the corresponding data flows described in Meta’s settings and FAQs.
Menu names and data behavior can differ by product, app version and region. Use the current labels shown in your app, and treat the steps below as a privacy-oriented setup pattern rather than a promise that every model behaves identically.
What a privacy-minimal setup changes
Smart glasses combine a camera, microphones, a phone connection and cloud services. Pairing the glasses does not require enabling every capability. For Ray-Ban Meta, you can make four separate decisions:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Camera-based Meta AI: leave it off if you do not want to ask the glasses to identify or describe what the camera sees.
- Cloud media processing: leave it off if you do not want eligible media temporarily stored in the cloud for enhanced processing.
- Voice controls: leave them off if you prefer physical controls and phone-based actions over spoken commands.
- Communication integrations: leave connected phone, Messenger or WhatsApp services disconnected, or disable announcements and readout, if other people might hear your calls and messages.
Every disabled option has a functional cost. You lose the associated hands-free feature, not the entire glasses setup. You can revisit the choices later in the Meta AI app if your needs change.

Check requirements before pairing
For the US version of the Ray-Ban Meta FAQ, pairing requires all of the following:
| Requirement | What the official requirement means |
|---|---|
| Compatible phone | Android 10 or later, or iOS 14.4 or later, according to the US FAQ. |
| Meta AI app | The app is used to complete pairing and manage settings. |
| Meta account | A valid account is required to finish setup. |
| Wireless internet | The phone must have wireless internet access during setup and for cloud-connected features. |
Requirements can change by model, country and app release. Check the current product FAQ and the in-app setup screen if your phone is on an older operating-system version or if the app reports an incompatibility.
Prepare the glasses and case
Remove the protective tab from the glasses. Place them back in the charging case and dock them until the status LED flashes blue. Turn the glasses on, then put them into Bluetooth pairing mode. Keep the phone nearby with wireless internet enabled before opening the Meta AI app.
Recommended Free Tools
Pair the glasses, then stop at each optional feature
- Install and open Meta AI. Sign in with the Meta account you intend to use with the glasses.
- Start the add-device flow. Follow the app’s current instructions to find the glasses and complete Bluetooth pairing.
- Confirm the device name and permissions. Read each permission prompt instead of accepting every option as a bundle. A permission needed for basic pairing is different from an optional service that adds cloud or communication features.
- Pause at camera-AI prompts. If you do not need visual questions, leave camera-based Meta AI disabled. You can still use the glasses for functions that do not require that feature.
- Review voice controls. Keep voice wake and related listening options off if you want to avoid voice commands and the associated voice-activity history. If you enable them, review the follow-up listening preference described below.
- Review communication services. Do not connect phone, Messenger or WhatsApp services unless you need announcements or readout. If you connect one, keep message announcements and automatic readout off unless you have a clear reason to use them.
- Review media processing. Find the cloud media-processing control in the app’s device privacy or media settings and turn it off for the least cloud storage. The exact label and location can move between releases.
- Finish setup and test only the functions you chose. Try a non-sensitive command or a physical control. Do not use a private conversation, another person’s face or confidential paperwork as a first test.
This staged approach prevents an initial setup wizard from turning convenience features into permanent defaults. The available toggles differ by software version and region, so record what your own app actually shows rather than relying on an older screenshot.
Camera AI is a deliberate cloud request
Camera-based Meta AI is optional. It is designed for prompts such as asking what landmark or plant is in view. For Ray-Ban Meta, the FAQ says that asking AI about what you see sends a photo from the glasses to Meta’s cloud for processing.

That statement applies to photos processed with AI; it does not establish that every image captured by the camera is automatically sent for AI analysis. A gallery photo and an AI question are separate actions. If you do not want the documented AI handling, leave camera use for Meta AI disabled and avoid camera-based prompts.
The Ray-Ban Meta FAQ states: All photos processed with AI are stored and used to improve Meta products, and will be used to train Meta’s AI with help from trained reviewers.
This is a vendor description of its policy, not an independent audit. The practical privacy choice is straightforward: visual questions provide hands-free interpretation, while keeping camera AI off avoids that specific cloud-processing request and its stated storage and training use.

What remains possible with camera AI off
Turning off camera-based AI does not by itself disable the camera’s ordinary gallery-capture function. The glasses can still have other camera features exposed by the product and app. Check the camera and capture controls shown on your model, and respect the capture indicator and the people around you whenever you record.
Separate cloud media processing from AI image questions
Cloud media processing is a different control from asking Meta AI to interpret a scene. The official FAQ says that, when cloud media processing is enabled, media is temporarily stored in the cloud for 30 days and then expires automatically. Deleting items from the glasses’ gallery also deletes those items from the cloud.
The 30-day period is a product-policy duration stated by the Ray-Ban Meta FAQ, not a measurement of typical user behavior or an independent statistic. If you want the least cloud retention, turn the feature off in settings. You give up cloud-enhanced media processing, but ordinary local handling that your model supports is not the same as opting into this cloud feature.

Find and verify the setting
- Open the Meta AI app and select the glasses.
- Open the device privacy, media or data settings area shown in your version of the app.
- Locate the cloud media-processing toggle and switch it off.
- Capture a non-sensitive test image, then check whether the app offers cloud-processing status or a cloud copy. Do not infer that an image was uploaded merely because it appears in the local gallery.
- If you later turn the feature on, remember that the FAQ’s 30-day expiration applies to temporarily stored media, and deleting a gallery item also removes its cloud copy.
If you cannot find the control, update the app only through your normal app store, check that the glasses are connected, and search the current in-app privacy help. Availability and labels can vary by region and release.
Control voice commands, activity history and deletion
Voice controls add hands-free convenience but create an activity trail that you should review. The product FAQ says AI conversations can be viewed in the app’s AI tab and voice activity in the activity log. Meta’s responsible-innovation page says users can delete voice recordings, and that deleted information will not be used for future training.
Use voice controls only when you need them
Leave voice wake controls disabled during initial setup if spoken commands are not essential. You can continue using the glasses’ supported physical controls and phone app functions, but you will not have hands-free voice commands. If you enable voice controls later, check the app’s voice-activity and privacy settings so you know what history is available.
Understand the “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’” option
Ray-Ban’s FAQ says the “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’” preference can leave the microphone active briefly after a request, and that the option can be turned off in app preferences. This describes a short follow-up listening window; it does not establish that the glasses continuously record. Keep the option off if that extra listening period is not worth the convenience.
Review and delete recordings
- Open the Meta AI app and select the AI tab or activity log shown in your version.
- Review the listed AI conversations and voice activity before deleting anything, especially if you need a record for troubleshooting.
- Use the available delete control for individual recordings or the available history-management option.
- Confirm deletion, then return to privacy settings to verify that the recording no longer appears.
Labels and deletion scope can change. The documented policy point is that Meta allows voice-recording deletion and says deleted information will not be used for future training; do not assume that deleting one item also changes unrelated gallery media or messages.

Limit communication exposure
Connected phone, Messenger or WhatsApp services can announce who is calling or messaging and can read messages aloud when those options are enabled. This is a privacy issue even when no cloud media feature is active: people nearby may hear names, message content or other context.
Privacy-minimal communication settings
- Leave communication accounts disconnected if you do not need glasses-based calling or messaging.
- If an account is connected, disable message announcements and automatic readout under the app’s Communication controls.
- Recheck these options after an app update or account reconnection; a communication integration can remain connected even when readout is off.
- Use a private environment for any test call or announcement, and tell nearby people that the glasses may provide audio.
Keeping integrations off means you lose hands-free announcements and readout. It does not prevent ordinary phone use away from the glasses.
Respect the capture LED
The front capture LED signals when content is captured for the gallery. Meta says that covering or disabling the LED automatically disables the camera. Do not obstruct the indicator to make recording less noticeable; doing so disables the camera rather than creating a private recording mode.
Before capturing, consider the setting and the people around you. A visible indicator does not make recording acceptable in every situation, and the LED’s meaning is limited to the capture behavior documented by the vendor. Explain the indicator to anyone who may be recorded, and follow local rules and workplace policies.

Troubleshoot setup without enabling extra data flows
The app cannot find the glasses
- Confirm the phone meets the current Android or iOS requirement and has wireless internet.
- Place the glasses in the case and redock them until the LED flashes blue.
- Turn the glasses on and enter Bluetooth pairing mode again.
- Reopen the Meta AI app and follow its current add-device flow.
Do not solve a pairing problem by enabling every optional permission. First get the basic Bluetooth connection working, then review each feature separately.
A privacy toggle is missing
Settings can differ by product, app version and region. Confirm that the glasses are connected, update the Meta AI app through the normal store channel, and search the current in-app privacy, media, voice-activity or Communication sections. If the feature is unavailable in your region or model, do not assume that a similarly named control has the same effect.
Voice or message audio is still playing
Check both the integration connection and its specific announcement or automatic-readout switch. Disconnect the service if you do not need it, then review the setting again after reconnecting the glasses. A voice-control switch does not necessarily control message readout, so inspect each category independently.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You want to remove a voice recording
Open the app’s AI tab or activity log, locate the voice activity and use the available deletion control. Verify that the item disappears. The vendor says deleted voice information will not be used for future training, but deletion of voice history is separate from deleting gallery media or cloud-processed images.
Maintain the privacy choices over time
- After app updates: scan device privacy, voice activity, media processing and Communication settings because labels and defaults can change.
- Before using camera AI: decide whether the visual answer is worth sending the relevant photo to the cloud under the documented policy.
- Before recording: check the capture LED and the people nearby; never cover the indicator as a workaround.
- Periodically: review AI conversations and voice activity, and delete recordings you no longer want retained.
- When lending or selling the glasses: disconnect communication accounts and review the app’s account and device-removal controls so another person does not inherit your connected services.
- When traveling: recheck regional availability and app behavior; a control present at home may be labeled differently or unavailable elsewhere.
Vendor FAQs and responsible-innovation pages describe intended behavior, not an independent audit. Keep the app current, read the settings presented for your model, and make each optional feature earn its place by providing a benefit you actually need.
