The safest way to use AI memory is to save only stable preferences that repeatedly improve answers, while leaving ordinary conversations temporary. In ChatGPT, review the controls at Settings > Personalization > Memory, explicitly add a few concise preferences, and regularly remove anything outdated or too personal. The labels and availability can differ by plan, region, platform, and workspace.
Memory is not an all-or-nothing record of every conversation. ChatGPT can use separately managed saved memories and, when enabled, useful context from chat history. You can ask what it remembers, correct or delete items, and use Temporary Chat for a one-off conversation that should not create or update personalization memory.
What AI memory actually saves
AI memory is a personalization layer. It can apply a preference or recurring constraint in later chats so you do not have to repeat it. Good examples include a preferred response language, metric units, a dietary requirement relevant to recipe questions, an accessibility need, or a standing constraint on a recurring project.
It is not a complete transcript archive, and it is not a guarantee that a particular sentence, template, or fact will be reproduced exactly. OpenAI states that “Memory does not retain every detail from every conversation.” The system can decide which information is useful, and saved details can change when you correct or remove them.

Because memory may contain personal information that you voluntarily share, treat it as a selective convenience rather than a private diary. Avoid making sensitive information a default memory unless you understand why it is needed and how you will remove it.
A quick test before saving anything
Ask four questions before you turn a detail into a lasting preference:
- Will this still be true and useful several months from now?
- Will it improve many future answers rather than one task?
- Can I express it without a password, identifier, or unnecessary personal history?
- Would I be comfortable seeing it in a memory-management list later?
If the answer to the first two questions is no, keep the information in the current conversation, a project file, or a normal note instead. If the answer to the third or fourth is no, leave it out of memory and consider Temporary Chat for the immediate task.
Saved memories and chat-history reference are different
ChatGPT can draw context from two related but distinct sources. The exact controls shown on your account may differ, but the distinction helps you decide what should persist.
| Source of context | How it works | Best use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saved memories | A separately manageable detail intended to remain useful until you change or delete it. | A stable preference or recurring constraint that should apply across future chats. | It is not an exact storage system for long documents, scripts, or every detail you mention. |
| Reference chat history | When enabled, ChatGPT can use useful information from prior conversations to make a response more relevant. | Broad continuity when you do not need to explicitly save one particular detail. | It does not retain every detail, and the context it uses can change over time. |
| Current conversation only | Instructions and facts remain in the chat you are using without being intentionally made a lasting preference. | A one-project requirement, temporary deadline, or draft-specific instruction. | Starting a new chat may not carry the context forward. |
| Temporary Chat | A separate conversation mode that does not create or update personalization memories. | One-off or sensitive context that should not shape later personalization. | It may still be retained for safety and may use existing context depending on the mode selected. |
If a preference matters every time, state it explicitly as a saved memory rather than assuming chat-history reference will preserve it. If it matters only for one project or one conversation, keep it in that conversation or use a temporary session instead of turning it into a lasting preference.
These sources can overlap. For example, deleting a saved memory does not necessarily remove the same wording from a source chat, and deleting that chat does not necessarily remove the separately saved memory. Think of each source as a separate place to review when you need a detail gone.
What should you let ChatGPT remember?
Useful candidates for saved memory
- Response preferences: “Use concise answers and metric units.”
- Language and accessibility: a preferred language, a need for plain-language explanations, or a formatting preference that helps you read responses.
- Recurring food constraints: a dietary preference that is relevant whenever you request recipes.
- Long-running work constraints: a stable project requirement, such as a programming language or a document’s audience, when you expect to revisit the work regularly.
These are recommendations about the type of information that benefits from persistence; they do not mean every example will be automatically saved. Keep the wording high-level and concise so it remains useful as your circumstances change.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Details to leave out by default
- Passwords, authentication codes, payment information, government identification numbers, or security answers.
- Highly sensitive health, legal, financial, relationship, or workplace details unless you have a clear, continuing reason to use them and are comfortable managing them.
- One-time instructions, temporary deadlines, exact drafts, or large blocks of text that belong in a project file or the current chat.
OpenAI’s Memory FAQ warns that sensitive information can appear in memory if users share it. The practical safeguard is to share less, use a temporary conversation for one-off sensitive context, and inspect the memory controls rather than assuming a detail stayed only in the current chat.
Examples of the right level of detail
A useful memory says, “Use metric units and concise bullet points.” An over-specific version might include an entire style guide, a client’s private contact details, and an old deadline. The first is a durable preference; the second belongs in a controlled project document and should be reviewed whenever the project changes.
For food requests, “I prefer vegetarian recipes” is a reusable rule. A list of everything in your refrigerator today is not. For accessibility, a general formatting need can be useful, while a detailed medical history is usually unnecessary for answering a formatting question. Keeping the statement narrow reduces the chance that unrelated answers will be shaped by context you no longer need.

How to turn on and configure memory
1. Open the controls available on your account
- Open ChatGPT and select Settings.
- Open Personalization, then Memory.
- Read the options your account actually shows. Depending on your plan, region, platform, or workspace, you may see Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Manage, Saved memories, or a memory summary.
There is no single menu that appears identically for every user. If an employer-managed workspace hides a control, check the workspace’s policy or ask its administrator; do not assume a missing switch means the feature is malfunctioning. A setting visible on the web may have a different label, or be unavailable, on a mobile app or managed account.

Enable only the source of context you want. A saved-memory control is appropriate when you want an explicit preference to persist. Chat-history reference provides broader continuity but is less predictable for any individual detail. You can keep a preference in the current conversation instead of enabling either option when persistence is unnecessary.
Do not enable a broader setting merely because you want one narrow preference. Start with the least persistent option that solves the problem, then expand only if repeating the preference becomes burdensome.
3. Add a concise preference
Where memory is available, tell ChatGPT plainly what to remember. For example:
Remember that I prefer concise answers with metric units.
Use one preference per statement and describe a durable rule rather than an exact response. Memory is suitable for “prefer bullet points,” not for storing a 2,000-word template that must be reproduced character for character. Even a clearly worded request is not a promise of an identical answer in every future context.
After adding a preference, test it with a normal, low-stakes question. The point of the test is to see whether the preference improves the answer, not to prove that every word was stored. If it does not help, remove it rather than adding more detailed instructions to compensate.
4. Verify what was stored
Ask: What do you remember about me? Review the available summary or saved-memory list. The summary can be incomplete and may not show every detail or its original source, so treat it as a practical review aid rather than a complete audit log. If an item is wrong, tell ChatGPT to correct it, then check the list again.
Use this check after your first setup and whenever the assistant gives an answer that seems influenced by an old preference. A memory summary is not a substitute for reviewing the originating chat, files, or connected services when you are trying to remove information completely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Prune information that no longer helps
Use Manage or Saved memories in the Personalization settings when those options are present. Delete preferences that are stale, too specific, or more personal than you intended. A short review every few months, and whenever a major preference changes, prevents old context from shaping new answers.

When replacing a preference, use clear language such as “My preferred units are now imperial; remove the previous metric-units preference.” Then verify the list. This two-step approach is safer than assuming that mentioning a new preference automatically removes the old one.
How to stop ChatGPT from remembering everything
“Memory off” and “delete what is already stored” are separate actions. Turning off a memory control prevents or limits future personalization according to that control, but it does not automatically erase existing saved memories or past chats.
Use the controls, then remove existing items
- Go to Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Turn off the memory or chat-history option you no longer want, using the labels shown on your account.
- Open the memory-management view and delete saved items that are already present.
- Find the chat where the information was originally shared and delete that chat if you want the source removed as well.
- Check other applicable sources, such as uploaded files or connected apps, because a detail can exist outside the saved-memory list.
OpenAI explains that deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from that chat. Conversely, deleting a saved memory does not remove the original conversation. Complete removal therefore requires reviewing both places, plus any other source that contains the same information.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If you only want to stop future personalization, switching off the relevant control may be enough for that purpose, but it is not a deletion request. If you want the information gone, perform the separate review-and-delete steps instead.
Allow time for deletion to propagate
Deletion is not necessarily instantaneous across every system. OpenAI says logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. That retention statement concerns deletion logs, not a promise that a deleted preference remains available for personalization during the whole period.
A removal checklist
- Remove the item from the saved-memory management view.
- Delete the chat in which you first supplied the information, if appropriate.
- Look for duplicate wording in uploaded files or connected apps.
- Ask what is remembered again after the change.
- Allow time for the deletion update to propagate before treating the process as complete.
Use Temporary Chat for one-off context
Start a Temporary Chat when a conversation should not create or update personalization memories. This is useful for a sensitive question, a disposable brainstorming session, or a task whose details should not influence later chats.
Temporary Chat is a personalization control, not a guarantee of immediate erasure. OpenAI says temporary conversations may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Depending on the setting chosen before the chat begins, a temporary conversation may still use existing memories or custom instructions; where available, choose the unpersonalized mode if you do not want those influences either.
Recommended Free Tools
Before sending the first message, confirm that the temporary-chat indicator is active. If you accidentally use a regular chat, review and delete any saved memory that was created and remove the source conversation as appropriate.
Temporary Chat is best understood as a boundary for personalization. It does not make a sensitive disclosure harmless, and it does not replace careful judgment about what you type. Share the minimum context needed to answer the question and avoid credentials or identifiers.

- Memory: whether ChatGPT can use saved details or prior-chat context to personalize your responses.
- Model training: whether content from an eligible personal account may be used to improve models.
To change the latter, open Settings > Data Controls and review Improve the model for everyone. Turning that setting off does not delete chats or saved memories. If you want both outcomes, change the training setting and separately manage your conversations and memory.

OpenAI states that content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. Workspace rules and memory availability can still differ, so follow the policy that applies to your account rather than assuming personal-account controls are identical.
Do not use the training switch as a substitute for a memory review. Conversely, deleting a memory does not answer the separate question of whether an eligible chat was available for model-improvement use under your account’s data controls.
A practical maintenance routine
When you add a preference
- Ask whether it will improve answers repeatedly over the next several months.
- State it at a high level, without credentials or unnecessary personal detail.
- Confirm that it appears in the available memory summary or list.
When a preference changes
- Tell ChatGPT the new preference clearly.
- Open the memory-management view and confirm the old wording is corrected or removed.
- Delete the source chat if it contains information you no longer want retained there.
Before a sensitive conversation
- Open a Temporary Chat.
- Check whether the chosen temporary-chat mode can use existing memories or custom instructions.
- Share only the minimum information needed to receive an answer.
During a periodic review
- Ask,
What do you remember about me? - Compare the summary with your current preferences.
- Remove stale, duplicate, or overly personal items.
- Review relevant chats, files, and connected services if you are trying to remove a detail completely.
When starting a new project
Decide whether a requirement belongs to the project or to you. A recurring preference such as concise formatting may belong in memory. A client’s temporary scope, a draft, or a deadline belongs in the project chat or file. Keeping that boundary makes it easier to archive the project without carrying its details into unrelated work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common memory problems
“I asked it to remember something, but it did not appear.”
Check whether memory is available and enabled under Personalization. The feature may be unavailable or differently named on your plan, platform, region, or managed workspace. Also remember that a request to remember does not guarantee that the system will retain the detail; restate the preference concisely and verify the memory list.
“It keeps using an old preference.”
Ask what is remembered, correct the item, and remove the outdated saved memory. Then inspect the source chat and any file or connected app that repeats the old information. A deleted saved item cannot correct contradictory context that remains elsewhere.
“I deleted the chat, but the detail still appears.”
A separately saved memory may remain after the conversation is deleted. Open the memory-management view and remove the item there, then allow deletion to propagate.
“I turned memory off, but old conversations are still visible.”
Disabling personalization does not delete chat history. Delete conversations separately if that is your goal, and remember that training controls are separate from both chat deletion and memory settings.
“Temporary Chat still feels personalized.”
Check which temporary-chat mode you selected. Existing memories or custom instructions may still be used depending on that choice. Select an unpersonalized mode where the interface offers one, and do not treat Temporary Chat as an immediate-erasure feature.
“The menu in a help article is not on my screen.”
Labels and availability can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace, and administrators can control managed accounts. Use the closest Personalization and Memory options actually displayed. If a control is unavailable in a work account, follow the workspace policy rather than trying to bypass it.

“The summary does not list something I remember sharing.”
A memory summary may not show every detail or its source. Do not infer from its absence that no copy exists. Review the relevant chat, files, and connected services, and use the available management controls to remove information you no longer want retained.
The simplest policy that works
Save only durable preferences that make repeated answers better; keep project details in the project’s chat or files; use Temporary Chat for one-off sensitive context; and review the memory list whenever your circumstances change. That policy gives you the convenience of continuity without turning every conversation into permanent personal context.
For the current controls and account-specific behavior, consult OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT, Memory FAQ, and Data Controls FAQ.

How do I get AI to remember my preferences?
In ChatGPT, open Settings, Personalization, and Memory, if those controls are available. State a durable preference plainly, such as “Remember that I prefer concise answers with metric units,” then ask “What do you remember about me?” and verify the available memory list. A request does not guarantee exact storage, so keep preferences short and high-level.
How do I stop ChatGPT from remembering everything?
Turn off the relevant Memory or chat-history control under Settings > Personalization > Memory, then separately delete saved memories that already exist. Delete source chats and review files or connected apps if you want the detail removed from those places too. Turning a switch off does not itself erase existing data.
What does ChatGPT remember about me?
Ask ChatGPT, “What do you remember about me?” and review the memory summary or saved-memory list under Personalization. The summary can be incomplete and may not identify every source, so inspect relevant chats and other sources when you need a complete removal review.
How do I delete a ChatGPT memory?
Ask ChatGPT to forget or correct the item, then open Settings > Personalization > Memory and use Manage or Saved memories to confirm and delete it. If the detail came from a chat you also want removed, delete that conversation separately. Deletion updates may take time, and OpenAI says logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.
Does Temporary Chat delete everything immediately?
No. Temporary Chat does not create or update personalization memories, but OpenAI says temporary conversations may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Depending on the mode selected, existing memories or custom instructions may still influence the conversation. Use an unpersonalized mode where available and share only what is necessary.
Is memory the same as turning off model training?
No. Memory controls personalization from saved details or prior-chat context. The “Improve the model for everyone” setting in Data Controls concerns model-improvement use. Turning it off does not delete chats or saved memories; manage those separately.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Save a few stable, high-level preferences; keep temporary project details in the project itself; use Temporary Chat for one-off sensitive context; and review both saved memories and source chats when deleting information. Memory, chat history, chat deletion, and model-training controls are separate, and the exact options depend on your account.
