To keep a YouTube channel live continuously, enable livestreaming for an eligible channel, create a broadcast in YouTube Studio, and send it from an encoder with the stream’s server URL and key. The encoder, its video source, power, and internet connection must keep working; YouTube does not guarantee uninterrupted service. Before relying on a 24/7 broadcast, test the full setup and plan how to preserve recordings: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but does not promise automatic archiving for longer streams.
What you need for continuous streaming
A continuous broadcast is more than a YouTube setting. The encoder sends a live feed to YouTube, and something must supply that feed—such as a prepared video playlist. For a do-it-yourself setup, the encoder and source need to stay available, powered, and connected to the internet. A software encoder gives you local control; hardware can provide a dedicated encoding device; a cloud service can handle playback and streaming remotely. Compare the operating effort, cost, recovery approach, and recording options before choosing.
YouTube describes an encoder as a tool that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its encoder guide covers software and hardware options and includes a cloud-based service for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video; that listing is not a guarantee of uptime or an endorsement. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the available workflow.
Check that your channel can go live
- Verify the channel. YouTube requires a verified channel for livestreaming.
- Check restrictions. The channel must not have had a livestream restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- Meet the age requirement. YouTube currently sets the minimum age to livestream at 16.
- Enable livestreaming. If this is your first time, activation can take up to 24 hours. Allow for that delay before scheduling a launch.
Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements and instructions for enabling live streaming for the current account-specific details.

Create a stream and connect an encoder
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live to open the Live Control Room.
- On the Stream tab, create a stream or configure an existing one. Add the title, visibility, and other broadcast details. You can schedule the broadcast if you want a listing in advance.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into the corresponding fields in your encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with people who should not be able to send a feed to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Start the encoder feed and check the Live Control Room preview. Once the feed is arriving correctly, start or manage the broadcast from YouTube Studio as appropriate for your stream setup.
Exact encoder labels vary by software or device. Use the encoder’s YouTube or RTMP streaming option and map YouTube’s server URL and key to the matching fields. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Choose quality and bitrate for your connection
Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on the source and the upload capacity available to the encoder. A higher bitrate can improve detail, but it also consumes more upload bandwidth and leaves less room for network fluctuations. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate. If you send primary and backup streams, include both in the bandwidth calculation.

- Use a bitrate your connection can sustain continuously, not just during a short speed test.
- Test representative motion and audio. A static screen may not expose issues that appear in fast-moving video or music.
- Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than assuming one bitrate suits every stream.
- Watch stream health during testing and adjust the encoder or network if YouTube reports problems.
YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into multiple outputs for viewers. Its current recommendations and stream-health guidance are at YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance and troubleshooting live-stream issues.
Test the complete setup before leaving it unattended
Run a realistic test before treating the channel as continuous. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder well in advance and starting it before the planned event; the same caution is useful for a continuous broadcast.

- Confirm the preview has both picture and sound, and check that the stream is visible from the intended channel or watch page.
- Check playback on a phone as well as the device used for setup.
- Monitor stream health and confirm the selected quality remains stable over time.
- Exercise your recovery plan rather than assuming a backup will work. YouTube specifically suggests testing encoder failover; if you use a wired network, disconnecting Ethernet can be one way to test the fallback path.
- Check the power, network, and video source that will be needed overnight or during other unattended hours.
A wired Ethernet connection can be part of a reliability plan, but by itself it does not prevent interruptions. Continuous operation depends on the encoder, source, power, connection, and YouTube ingestion all remaining functional. YouTube’s guidance provides testing practices, not a universal uptime guarantee or a single configuration that suits every creator. See YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance.
Plan how to record a broadcast longer than 12 hours
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise automatic archiving for streams that exceed 12 hours, so do not assume a 24-hour or longer broadcast will have a complete replay on your channel. If preserving the full program matters, arrange a separate local or other recording workflow, or schedule stream rotations and verify that each resulting archive is available and complete. Include storage, recording reliability, and the transition between streams in that plan.

Troubleshoot common continuous-stream problems
- Livestreaming is not available: verify the channel and check for a restriction in YouTube’s 90-day lookback. If you just enabled live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: confirm that the server URL and stream key are copied into the correct fields, and that the encoder is actually sending. Check for spaces or outdated credentials; reset an exposed or compromised key.
- The preview stutters or stream health is poor: reduce bitrate or quality until the connection can sustain it, and preserve the recommended 20% upload headroom. Count primary and backup feeds together.
- Audio or video is missing: check the encoder’s selected source and audio input, then inspect the YouTube preview before relying on the broadcast.
- The broadcast stops while unattended: check the encoder, source playback, power, and internet path. Test failover in advance; a backup that has not been exercised is not a dependable recovery plan.
- The full replay is missing: if the stream ran longer than 12 hours, YouTube does not promise automatic archiving. Use a separate recording or verified rotation workflow when a complete archive is required.
