WordPress does not include a native, centralized activity-log screen. To see who changed a post, installed a plugin, altered a setting, or signed in, install an audit-log plugin, configure its event and privacy settings, choose a retention period, and verify that a harmless test action appears.
This guide walks through the setup from plugin selection to ongoing review. It also explains how to handle personal data, team permissions, multisite installations, exports, and common failures so the log remains useful without becoming an uncontrolled database of sensitive information.

An activity log is a chronological audit trail created by a plugin. Each entry normally identifies an actor, timestamp, event type, and additional detail such as the object changed, the old and new value, or the source of a login. The exact fields depend on the plugin and the event integration.
Typical events
- Post, page, and custom-post-type creation, editing, publishing, deletion, and status changes.
- User creation, role changes, profile edits, password changes, and account deletion.
- Successful and failed logins, logouts, password resets, and other authentication events.
- Plugin and theme installation, activation, deactivation, update, and removal.
- WordPress core updates, configuration changes, and selected settings changes.
- Multisite administration events and activity from supported third-party plugins.
What the log is not
An activity log is not a backup, malware scanner, or a replacement for WordPress revisions. It may tell you that a page changed, but it cannot restore the previous site by itself. Keep independent backups and use revisions or deployment records when you need to recover content.

Choose the plugin before installing it
Do not select an audit plugin solely because it has a familiar name. Compare the functions that matter to your site, the people who will administer it, and the period for which records must be retained.
Selection criteria
- Event coverage: Confirm that it records the content, user, login, settings, plugin, theme, multisite, and third-party events you actually need.
- Search and filtering: A busy site needs filters for actor, event family, date, severity, and object. Without them, an audit trail becomes difficult to investigate.
- Retention and cleanup: Look for an explicit deletion schedule, manual cleanup controls, and a documented storage location.
- Privacy controls: Check IP masking or anonymization, export behavior, erasure support, and suggested privacy-policy language.
- Access control: Verify which roles can read the log or change its settings, especially on a multisite network.
- Reporting and integrations: Agencies and compliance teams may need CSV or HTML reports, email summaries, REST or WP-CLI access, or an external destination.
- Operational fit: Review database design, update cadence, supported WordPress and PHP versions, and the effect of logging on a high-traffic site.

Plugin versions, compatibility, active-install figures, defaults, and premium capabilities change. Confirm the current directory listing and plugin documentation immediately before deployment, particularly on a production site.
Prepare the site and your policy
Logging is easiest to manage when you decide the boundaries before activation.
Pre-install checklist
- Record the WordPress version, PHP version, database engine, and whether the site is single-site or multisite.
- Take a tested backup of the database and files. An audit plugin writes to the database, so a rollback plan matters if it conflicts with another extension.
- Identify the administrators who may read entries and the smaller group allowed to alter logging settings.
- List the event families required for security, editorial accountability, support, or compliance. Avoid enabling every optional integration without a reason.
- Decide how long records should be retained and who approves deletion.
- Review your privacy notice and data-subject request process before collecting IP addresses, names, email addresses, or other identifiers.
- For a critical site, test the plugin on staging first and measure database growth during representative activity.
Install an activity-log plugin from the dashboard
The standard installation path works for directory-listed plugins and does not require shell access.
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Open Plugins > Add New.
- Search for the exact plugin name and inspect its author, compatibility information, changelog, and support activity.
- Select Install, wait for WordPress to finish, and then select Activate.
- Open the plugin’s new menu or settings page. Do not assume logging is configured simply because activation succeeded.
Manual installation
If the dashboard cannot install the package, obtain the plugin ZIP from its legitimate distribution source, upload or extract it so its folder is under wp-content/plugins/, and then open Plugins in the dashboard and select Activate. Check file ownership and permissions if WordPress cannot see the folder. Never upload an untrusted ZIP or overwrite an existing plugin directory without a backup.

Review diagnostics and telemetry
Some plugins ask to send diagnostic or usage information. Read the disclosure, decide whether it is necessary for support, and record the choice in your change log. This is separate from the events stored on your own site.

Set who can view and manage the log
Limit viewing to trusted administrators, security staff, or a narrowly defined custom capability. Separate read access from configuration access when the plugin permits it. Editors may need to know that a change occurred, but they do not automatically need access to users’ IP addresses or authentication history.
Choose event families
Start with content changes, user and role changes, authentication events, plugin and theme changes, core updates, and security-relevant settings. Add third-party integrations only when you can explain the operational value and the data they add. Record the chosen baseline so a later administrator can tell whether an event disappeared because the site changed or because logging was disabled.
Handle IP addresses deliberately
Decide whether IP addresses are essential to an investigation. If they are not, enable masking or anonymization. If they are retained, document the purpose, access restrictions, retention period, and response process for privacy requests. A plugin’s default is not a substitute for your own policy review.

Retention is a trade-off: more history can reveal a slow-moving compromise, while more history also means more personal data and database volume.
Use the plugin’s controls
WP Activity Log documents three months as its listed default retention and allows the period to be changed; its documentation also describes keeping logs indefinitely. Treat those as configuration choices, not universal recommendations. Set the shortest period that still covers your incident-response window, support cycle, contractual obligations, and any required investigation hold.
Document exceptions
Define what happens when an investigation is active, a regulator requests records, or a legal hold applies. Pause automated deletion only for the affected records or period where your process allows it, then return to the normal schedule. Ensure database backups do not silently preserve deleted log data longer than your policy permits.
Watch database growth
High-volume sites can generate entries quickly, particularly when failed logins, API requests, or third-party integrations are enabled. Monitor table size, scheduled cleanup jobs, and backup duration. If growth is excessive, reduce low-value event families, shorten retention, or use an external destination supported by your plugin and governance process.

Verify that events are being recorded
Never assume that activation or a green status message proves the audit trail works. Perform a harmless test and inspect the resulting entry.
- Choose a low-risk action, such as editing a draft, changing a noncritical setting, or signing in and out with a test account.
- Wait for any scheduled processing the plugin documents, then open its log viewer.
- Filter by the current date, your test user, or the relevant event family.
- Open the entry and check that it identifies the actor, time, event type, and useful object or value detail.
- Repeat with a second event family, such as a plugin update in a staging site, if those events are important to your policy.
- Record the verification date, plugin version, and expected result in your operational notes.
Do not describe an event as proven on a production site until you have observed it there. A plugin may support an event class in general while a theme, integration, permission setting, or version difference prevents a particular event from appearing.
Read and investigate entries
Start with the event context
For a suspected change, capture the actor, timestamp and timezone, event identifier, affected object, and detailed before-and-after values where available. Correlate that information with hosting access records, deployment notes, support tickets, and WordPress revisions. Keep the original entry intact while investigating.
Investigate a changed post or page
- Filter to content events in the suspected time range.
- Search for the post title, ID, or author.
- Compare the activity entry with the post’s revisions and editorial workflow.
- Check whether the actor’s role or account changed shortly before the edit.
- Review nearby plugin, theme, and settings events for a related cause.
Investigate a plugin or setting change
Look for activation, deactivation, installation, update, and configuration events around the incident. Identify whether the actor was a human administrator, an automated process, or a service account. If the log lacks the required detail, treat that as a coverage gap and adjust the event configuration after preserving the evidence you do have.

Use alerts, reports, and exports carefully
A log that nobody reviews is only passive storage. Define which events require immediate attention, which are reviewed daily or weekly, and which are retained only for later investigation.
Reports and email summaries
Simple History offers weekly email reports. Schedule summaries to a monitored address, not an abandoned mailbox, and avoid sending sensitive details to a channel with broader access than the log itself.
Exports and external integrations
WP Activity Log’s premium edition documents reporting, export, and external integrations. Simple History provides REST and WP-CLI access. Before exporting, decide who may run the export, where the file is stored, how it is encrypted, and when it is deleted. An export can outlive the retention setting in the WordPress database.

Alert design
Alert on high-value signals such as privilege changes, new administrator accounts, repeated failed logins, plugin deactivation, or unexpected configuration changes. Avoid alerting on every ordinary content edit; excessive notifications train recipients to ignore the channel.
Protect personal data and meet governance needs
WordPress privacy guidance treats names, email addresses, and IP addresses as personal data. Activity logs can also contain usernames, object titles, query details, or values copied from settings.
Disclose collection
Add the plugin’s suggested privacy-policy text where appropriate, then edit it so it accurately describes your event types, storage location, recipients, retention period, and contact route. State whether data is shared with an external reporting or alerting service.
Restrict access
Use least privilege for the log viewer and settings pages. Protect administrator accounts with strong authentication and review the list of users who can export or delete entries. On multisite, confirm whether a network administrator can see events from every site and whether individual site administrators can change network-wide settings.
Support access and erasure requests
Test how the plugin locates a person’s records, masks an IP address, exports relevant entries, and removes data when required. Check backups and external integrations separately; deleting a row in WordPress may not delete a copy elsewhere.

Multisite adds another permission boundary. Decide whether the log is managed centrally, per site, or through both views. Verify that an event identifies the site or network context, and test a site-level action and a network-level action in a staging network.
Third-party coverage is never universal. A plugin may record changes made through its own hooks while missing actions performed by a custom integration, direct database query, command-line script, or host-level tool. Document those blind spots and supplement the log with deployment records, server logs, or code-review controls where appropriate.

Troubleshoot a log that does not meet expectations
No entries appear after activation
- Confirm the plugin is active on the correct site and, for multisite, activated in the intended scope.
- Check that the event family is enabled and that your account has permission to view it.
- Repeat a controlled test after clearing date, actor, and event filters.
- Review the plugin’s status, scheduled tasks, database tables, and error log for failed writes.
- Check compatibility with the current WordPress and PHP versions and temporarily test with nonessential plugins disabled on staging.
Entries are too numerous
Identify the event family generating the volume, then disable low-value events, shorten retention, or change the alert policy. Do not delete records during an active investigation without preserving an approved copy.
The log is missing a known change
Determine whether the action occurred through WordPress, WP-CLI, a REST request, a host control panel, or a direct database operation. Confirm that the plugin supports that path and that the relevant integration is enabled. A missing event may indicate a genuine product limitation rather than a filter problem.

Review role capabilities, network-versus-site scope, and any custom role editor. Avoid granting broad administrator access as a quick fix; correct the specific capability and retest.
Database or backup size increases sharply
Measure which event tables are growing, verify cleanup jobs, and compare the configured retention with the policy. Reduce event scope or retention before increasing server resources, and test exports and restores so the log does not make recovery impractical.
Maintain the log over time
- After every plugin or WordPress update, repeat a harmless edit and login test.
- Review event coverage whenever you add a new editor, integration, payment workflow, or deployment method.
- Quarterly, verify retention, privacy text, role permissions, scheduled cleanup, database growth, backups, and export destinations.
- Remove former staff access promptly and review service accounts for unused privileges.
- Keep a short runbook naming the log owner, alert recipients, escalation path, and evidence-preservation procedure.
- Reassess whether IP addresses and detailed values are still necessary for the site’s current risk profile.
A practical baseline for most sites
For a small site, install a directory-listed plugin, enable content, user, login, plugin, theme, core, and security events, restrict viewing to trusted administrators, mask IP addresses unless a documented need requires them, and choose a retention period tied to your incident-response process. Verify a draft edit and a test login immediately.
For an agency, newsroom, membership site, or regulated workflow, add multisite and third-party coverage tests, named reviewers, weekly reporting or a monitored export path, documented erasure handling, and a staging test after updates. Keep external copies only when their access, encryption, retention, and deletion rules are equally clear.
