To use a Wi-Fi extender, first connect it to your router using the model’s WPS button, setup app, or browser instructions. Then move it to a spot between the router and the area with weak Wi-Fi, where it can still receive a usable signal from the router. Finally, connect a phone or computer to the extended network and check that it can reach the internet.
Before you begin: find the setup method for your model
Check the extender’s quick-start guide for its supported setup method, app, administration address, and button sequence. These details differ by model, so do not assume an address or reset procedure from another brand will work.
- WPS: Use this push-button method only if both the router and extender support it and the router’s security configuration is compatible.
- App setup: Some extenders can be configured through a manufacturer app, such as TP-Link Tether on supported models.
- Browser setup: Some models guide you through setup after you connect a phone or computer to the extender’s setup Wi-Fi and open the model-specific page.
NETGEAR documents WPS and browser setup in its setup instructions and quick setup guide. TP-Link documents app and browser methods in its extender setup and troubleshooting guide.
How to connect the extender to your router
Option 1: Use WPS, if both devices support it
- Place the extender near the router for initial pairing and power it on.
- Follow the extender’s instructions to start WPS on the extender, then press the router’s WPS button in the order and time window specified for your models.
- Wait for the extender’s status indicator to show that it has joined the router network. Consult the model manual for the meaning of its lights.
WPS behavior depends on both devices and the router’s security settings. NETGEAR says WPS supports WPA/WPA2 and directs users with legacy WEP security to browser or app setup instead; check your own router and extender documentation before choosing WPS. See the NETGEAR extender FAQ.

Option 2: Use the app or browser setup flow
- Connect your phone or computer to the extender’s temporary setup Wi-Fi if the instructions require it.
- Open the manufacturer’s app or enter the setup address specified in the manual. Follow the prompts to select your home Wi-Fi network.
- Enter the router’s Wi-Fi password—not its administration password—when prompted. Complete setup and wait for the extender to confirm its router connection.
If the setup device cannot discover the extender, confirm that it is connected to the extender’s setup network. For TP-Link Tether, TP-Link also recommends turning off cellular data and rebooting the extender if the app cannot find it.
Where to place the extender after pairing
Move the extender to a location roughly halfway between the router and the weak-coverage area, while keeping it within the router’s usable signal range. TP-Link gives this as manufacturer guidance, not a universal measured distance; ASUS similarly recommends a halfway position between the router and the place where wireless devices are commonly used. See TP-Link’s placement guidance and ASUS support.

If the extender is too far from the router to maintain its connection, it cannot reliably pass that connection on to devices. Use the extender’s signal indicator or location assistant, if available, to assess its link. If setup itself is failing, move it close to the router, retry the connection, and relocate it only after pairing succeeds.

Connect devices and confirm the result
After pairing, connect a phone or computer to the extended Wi-Fi network and test internet access. The network name depends on the setup method and model: TP-Link notes that WPS may retain the router’s name or use a name ending in EXT, while app or web setup may allow a custom name. Some configurations use the same password as the router. Check the extender’s own instructions rather than assuming these naming or password conventions apply to every device.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
The app cannot find the extender
- Check that the phone is connected to the extender’s setup Wi-Fi if required by the app.
- For TP-Link Tether, try turning off cellular data and rebooting the extender.
The extender cannot find the home network
- Rescan for networks and check that another device can see the router’s Wi-Fi.
- Move the extender closer to the router while setting it up. TP-Link recommends within 16 feet for this troubleshooting step; that is TP-Link-specific advice, not a universal placement rule.
- Check that the router password is correct. If the extender supports dual-band Wi-Fi but the router is single-band, TP-Link says to skip the unsupported 5 GHz band.
The password appears correct, but setup fails
Re-enter the router’s actual Wi-Fi password and check the router-to-extender signal. NETGEAR notes that a weak router signal can cause this symptom. Try pairing near the router before moving the extender to its intended location.
WPS pairing fails
Confirm that both devices support WPS and that the router’s security configuration is supported. If WPS is unavailable or incompatible, use the manufacturer’s app or browser setup route instead.

- Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
The extender connects, but there is no internet
Check that the router itself has internet access. Then confirm that the extender is still within router range. If the router’s Wi-Fi name or password changed, update the extender’s connection using its setup instructions.

Connect the phone or computer to the extender’s Wi-Fi and use the address or current IP documented for that model. Some Linksys models have model-specific browser access instructions; see Linksys browser-based setup access. TP-Link suggests Ethernet for models with an Ethernet port and automatic IP configuration on a computer. Do not substitute another brand’s default address, password, or reset timing.

What to check when choosing or configuring an extender
Compatibility and setup convenience depend on the router, extender, and intended layout. Check these points in both devices’ documentation:
- Whether both support a setup method you can use, including WPS where appropriate.
- Which Wi-Fi bands each supports, especially if the router is single-band.
- Whether you can configure and manage the extender through an app, a browser, or both.
- Whether it provides a signal indicator or placement assistant.
- Whether Ethernet or access-point functionality matters for your home layout.
Manufacturer setup guidance explains how to connect and position an extender, but it does not establish a universal speed gain, coverage distance, or best model. Actual results depend on the devices and the wireless conditions in your home.
