Yes, you can run a video doorbell without paying for a monthly cloud plan. Choose a model that supports local recording, install its microSD card, built-in memory, or compatible hub, and configure the app to save clips locally. The important limitations are model-specific: battery and wired modes may record different types of video, existing chimes may need to be bypassed, and transformer requirements must match the doorbell. A subscription-free setup can provide event clips—and, on some models, continuous recording—without making every cloud feature free.

What “without a subscription” actually means

A doorbell camera can use three different storage arrangements:

  • Local removable storage: Video is written to a microSD card installed in the doorbell or an associated device. The card’s supported capacity and speed are set by the manufacturer.
  • Built-in storage: Some products include internal memory. Clips remain on the doorbell or its base station until the available space is filled and older footage is overwritten.
  • Hub storage: Certain systems send recordings to a compatible indoor hub. The hub may require its own storage or have a fixed capacity.

These methods are different from cloud backup. A paid plan may still be offered for off-site copies, extended history, person or package detection, or sharing features. Local recording itself can be available at no recurring charge, but do not assume that every app function is included free of charge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are also two distinct recording modes. Event recording saves a clip when motion, a person, or a doorbell press is detected. Continuous recording writes video around the clock and may include pre-recording, which captures the seconds before an event. A doorbell can support local event clips without supporting 24/7 recording.

Choose the power and recording arrangement first

Decide whether you need a battery installation, existing low-voltage wiring, or a wired network connection before selecting a doorbell. Power choice affects installation effort, maintenance, and sometimes the recording features available to you.

Battery installation

Battery operation is useful when there is no usable doorbell cable or when you cannot alter the existing wiring. You mount the unit, charge or insert its battery, connect it to Wi-Fi, and replace or recharge the battery as needed. Battery models commonly favor motion-triggered clips to conserve power. Some disable continuous and pre-event recording entirely while running on battery.

For example, Reolink states that its Battery Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) supports continuous recording and pre-recording only in Wired Power Mode; those features are unavailable in Battery Mode. Treat that as a product-specific rule, not a limitation that applies to every battery doorbell.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wired low-voltage power

Wiring can provide stable power and may unlock continuous recording on models that support it. Hardwiring does not automatically guarantee 24/7 recording: verify the exact model’s power mode, storage requirement, and firmware support. You must also confirm that the existing transformer supplies the voltage and apparent power the doorbell requires.

PoE or other network-powered models

Some doorbells use Power over Ethernet rather than a traditional two-wire doorbell circuit. They can offer a reliable network connection and continuous power, but installation requires suitable Ethernet cabling, a PoE switch or injector, and a mounting location reachable by that cable. Their storage and chime behavior differ from low-voltage Wi-Fi models, so follow the product guide rather than adapting a battery-doorbell procedure.

Confirm local-storage support and capacity

Before mounting anything, read the storage section of the exact model documentation. Look for four details: where recordings are saved, whether a card or hub is required, the maximum supported capacity, and which recording modes use that storage.

Example model or system Local-storage method Published capacity Important qualification
eufy Video Doorbell C31 microSD card Up to 128 GB eufy says local microSD recording does not incur subscription fees; capacity is the product specification accessed in 2026.
Reolink Battery Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) microSD card Up to 512 GB Reolink’s continuous-recording prerequisites include Wired Power Mode and a supported microSD card.
Reolink wired Wi-Fi and PoE doorbell models in its US comparison microSD card Up to 256 GB The figure applies to the cited models in Reolink’s US product comparison, accessed in 2026.
Models with built-in memory or a hub Internal memory or compatible hub Not stated in the available product information Check whether the storage is expandable and how the system handles full storage.

Use a card that meets the manufacturer’s type, speed, endurance, and formatting requirements. A card larger than the published limit may not be recognized, and a card that works for still photos may be unsuitable for repeated video writes. Install it before final mounting when the design makes the slot difficult to reach, then format it through the manufacturer’s app if instructed.

Estimate retention from your own scene rather than a generic number. A busy street, high resolution, frequent motion, and continuous recording consume space much faster than a quiet porch with event clips only. Enable overwrite behavior if available, and export important clips before they are replaced.

Check wiring, transformer, and chime compatibility

Inspect the existing doorbell circuit

Press the current doorbell and confirm that it works. Locate the indoor chime and transformer, usually near an electrical panel, utility area, attic, or mechanical room. Photograph the wire labels and transformer rating before disconnecting anything. The rating is normally printed in volts AC (VAC) and volt-amperes (VA).

For the Tapo D235, D225, and TD25 configurations covered by TP-Link, the existing transformer must provide 8–24 V AC and at least 10 VA for hardwiring. Those figures apply to those models and are not a universal doorbell standard. If your transformer is outside the specified range, replace it only with a suitable unit and follow local electrical rules.

Understand chime behavior

A mechanical chime can remain functional in a charging-only wiring arrangement on the covered Tapo models. TP-Link’s Always-On Mode instead requires bypassing the existing chime. Bypassing changes how the circuit is energized, so use the supplied wiring diagram and the correct bypass component; do not guess from wire color alone.

Other manufacturers use different terminals, adapters, and chime settings. A doorbell may support a mechanical chime, an electronic chime, a proprietary plug-in chime, or no existing chime at all. Confirm compatibility before buying rather than assuming a two-wire connection will preserve the sounder.

Work safely

Turn off the relevant circuit breaker before handling doorbell wiring, even though the circuit is low voltage. Verify that the chime is no longer energized, keep bare conductors from touching, and restore power only after all connections are secured. TP-Link advises consulting a licensed electrician when the chime’s markings or wiring do not match its guide. Follow the same principle for any product: stop if the circuit is unfamiliar.

Prepare the hardware and network

  • Fully charge the battery or confirm the wired transformer is within the model’s stated range.
  • Have the supported microSD card available, or identify the required hub and its storage.
  • Use a phone or tablet with the manufacturer’s current app and an account if the setup requires one.
  • Connect the phone to the Wi-Fi network the doorbell will use. Many cameras require a particular band during initial setup; follow the model’s instructions rather than forcing a band it does not support.
  • Choose a mounting position with a clear view, usable Wi-Fi signal, and enough height to see faces and packages without pointing directly at bright sky.
  • Gather the supplied bracket, screws, anchors, angle wedge, security screw, and any chime-bypass or terminal accessories.

Do not permanently mount the unit until pairing succeeds. A temporary position lets you test Wi-Fi strength, field of view, motion zones, and whether the battery or wiring behaves as expected.

Install a battery doorbell

  1. Charge and insert the battery. Use the supplied charger or charging cable, then install the battery exactly as shown. Close the weather seal or battery cover completely.
  2. Install the manufacturer’s app. Sign in or create the required account. Account creation does not necessarily mean a cloud subscription; it may be needed for device management.
  3. Add the device. Choose the doorbell category, scan its QR code or enter its identifier, and follow the pairing prompts. Keep the phone close until setup completes.
  4. Join Wi-Fi. Enter the network credentials in the app. Wait for the device to report a successful connection, then check its signal at the intended mounting position.
  5. Insert and initialize local storage. Install the supported microSD card if the model uses one. In the app, format or initialize it when prompted. A format erases existing content.
  6. Set recording behavior. Select event recording, continuous recording, or pre-recording only when the model and current power mode support it. Battery mode may hide or disable continuous options.
  7. Choose detection settings. Set motion zones to exclude roads or neighboring property, select person or package detection if available, and adjust sensitivity to reduce false alerts.
  8. Mount the bracket. Hold the bracket at the selected height, mark the holes, drill or install anchors appropriate for the surface, and tighten the screws without crushing the housing. An adhesive bracket can be used only when the manufacturer permits it and the surface is clean and suitable.
  9. Secure the doorbell. Slide or click the camera onto the bracket and install the security screw. Confirm that the lens is level and that the weather seal is closed.
  10. Test the view and battery status. Walk through the detection area, press the doorbell, and check the live view from inside the home.

Install a wired doorbell and preserve or bypass the chime as required

  1. Turn off the breaker. Label the breaker so nobody restores power while you are working. Confirm that the existing chime is inactive.
  2. Remove the old button. Keep each conductor from falling into the wall. Do not rely on insulation color; use the terminal labels and the manufacturer’s diagram.
  3. Verify the transformer. Confirm the voltage and VA rating against the selected model. For the cited Tapo D235, D225, and TD25 hardwired setups, the requirement is 8–24 V AC and at least 10 VA.
  4. Select the chime mode. Use charging-only wiring when the covered Tapo configuration is intended to retain its existing chime. Use Always-On Mode only when you are prepared to bypass that chime as specified by TP-Link.
  5. Install the bypass or adapter. Attach it at the chime or terminals exactly as shown in the product guide. If the labels differ, stop and obtain qualified electrical help.
  6. Connect the doorbell wires. Loosen the correct terminals, place the conductors securely, and tighten them without leaving exposed copper that could touch another terminal.
  7. Restore power and check startup. The doorbell should boot, show its status indicator, or become discoverable in the app. If it remains dead, switch the breaker off again before inspecting connections.
  8. Pair and configure the app. Add the device, connect it to Wi-Fi, initialize local storage, and select the recording mode available for the chosen wiring arrangement.
  9. Mount and align the camera. Use the supplied wedge if the wall angle requires it. Tighten all hardware and confirm the chime or bypass behaves as intended.

Configure local recording instead of cloud backup

App labels vary, but the relevant controls are usually under a device settings, storage, recording, or security menu. Configure them in this order:

  1. Open the doorbell in the app and confirm that the storage status shows the microSD card, internal memory, or hub as available.
  2. Format or initialize the storage if the app requests it. Recordings already on the card will be erased.
  3. Choose the recording schedule. Select event-only recording for lower storage use, or continuous recording where the model, power mode, and storage support it.
  4. Set video resolution, frame rate, and clip length within the device’s available options. Higher settings use more storage.
  5. Enable overwrite when you want the oldest clips replaced automatically. Disable it only when you have a plan to manage full storage.
  6. Review cloud settings separately. Turn off optional cloud backup if you do not want uploads, while leaving local recording enabled. The exact labels and feature availability differ by vendor.
  7. Set time zone, date, and daylight-saving behavior so exported clips have meaningful timestamps.
  8. Configure notification rules and privacy zones. A local recording can still create an unnecessary phone alert if detection settings are too sensitive.

Keep the account protected with a unique password and multifactor authentication when offered. Restrict shared users to the permissions they need, update the doorbell firmware through the official app, and install updates for the phone that accesses the camera.

Verify that footage is really being saved locally

Do this check immediately after installation and repeat it after changing power or storage settings:

  1. Stand outside the configured motion zone and press the doorbell or create a permitted motion event.
  2. Wait for the notification, then open the event list and play the clip.
  3. Open the storage information page and confirm that the clip is associated with local storage rather than only a cloud trial.
  4. Disconnect the phone from Wi-Fi temporarily while still allowing the doorbell to operate, then check whether an already saved local clip remains available according to the model’s offline behavior.
  5. Export a short clip to the phone and open the exported file to confirm that playback and audio work.
  6. If continuous recording was selected, review a time period with no motion and confirm that a timeline or file exists for that period. Do not infer 24/7 recording merely from an event clip.

This verification is especially important after switching from wired to battery power, installing a new card, changing the chime mode, or updating firmware.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

No recordings appear

  • Check that the card is inserted fully and is listed as healthy in the app.
  • Format the card in the app if the manufacturer requires initialization.
  • Confirm that recording is enabled and that a schedule is active for the current time.
  • Check whether the doorbell is in a power mode that disables continuous recording.
  • Replace a failed or unsupported card with one within the model’s stated capacity and specifications.

Continuous recording is unavailable

Look at the power mode first. Reolink’s Battery Video Doorbell (2nd Gen), for example, makes continuous and pre-recording features available only with wired power. Other products may impose different limits or require a hub. If the model supports the feature, verify that local storage is installed and that the firmware is current.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The existing chime does not sound

Recheck whether the selected configuration is intended to retain the chime or bypass it. On the covered Tapo setup, Always-On Mode requires a bypass, while charging-only wiring can retain the existing chime. Turn power off before changing any connection. A damaged, incompatible, or incorrectly labeled chime circuit needs qualified diagnosis.

The doorbell repeatedly disconnects

  • Test Wi-Fi at the mounting location rather than beside the router.
  • Move the access point or add a suitable network extension without placing it where weather or heat can damage it.
  • Check battery level and temperature; low power can interrupt wireless operation.
  • Confirm that the transformer remains within the model’s required range and that wire connections are tight.
  • Install firmware updates only through the manufacturer’s official app and reboot the doorbell after the update if instructed.

Motion alerts are excessive or missing

Reduce the detection zone that covers a sidewalk, road, tree, or moving shadow. Lower sensitivity gradually and test at the distance where a visitor normally stands. If alerts are missing, widen the zone, raise sensitivity, and check whether a privacy mask or schedule is suppressing detection.

The camera view is poor at night

Clean the lens, remove protective film, and check that infrared illumination is not reflecting from a nearby wall, glass pane, or overhanging trim. Adjust the angle so the visitor is not backlit by a porch light. These changes improve image quality without changing storage or subscription settings.

Battery, wired, and storage trade-offs

Requirement Battery setup Wired setup Hub-based or PoE setup
Best when No usable doorbell cable or minimal wiring work is desired Stable power and possible continuous recording are priorities A central recorder or network cabling already exists
Maintenance Recharge or replace the battery Little routine power maintenance once correctly installed Maintain the hub, PoE equipment, or network path
Recording capability Often event-focused; model-specific limits apply May support continuous and pre-recording when documented Depends on the hub, network, and exact doorbell model
Chime behavior Usually uses a wireless or app alert; existing chime compatibility varies May retain or bypass the existing chime depending on wiring mode Often requires a separate chime or integration
Storage microSD, built-in memory, or hub if supported Same options, with greater suitability for sustained writes on supported models May centralize storage, but capacity and retention are system-specific

The practical choice is the one that meets your recording objective without violating the home’s electrical or network constraints. If you only need a record of visitors, event clips on local storage may be sufficient. If you need to review everything that happened between alerts, select a model and power mode that explicitly support continuous recording.

Privacy, access, and evidence management

Local storage reduces dependence on a remote storage plan, but it does not make the camera risk-free. Anyone who can unlock the app, remove the card, or access a shared account may be able to view or delete footage. Use a strong account password, enable multifactor authentication, limit shared accounts, and keep the device’s firmware current.

Point the camera only where necessary. Use privacy zones to mask neighboring doors, windows, and areas that do not concern your security purpose. Check local rules before recording audio or areas beyond your property; requirements can vary by jurisdiction.

When a clip may be needed as evidence, export it promptly, preserve the original file, note the device’s date and time, and keep a second copy in a secure location. Local overwrite can permanently replace an unexported event.

A final pre-installation and post-installation checklist

Before buying or mounting

  • Confirm local recording is supported without a mandatory cloud plan.
  • Identify whether storage is microSD, built-in, or hub-based.
  • Check the exact maximum card capacity and required card type.
  • Choose battery, low-voltage wired, or PoE power based on the property.
  • Compare transformer voltage and VA with the model’s requirements.
  • Verify whether the existing chime is retained, replaced, or bypassed.
  • Confirm Wi-Fi or Ethernet coverage at the mounting location.

After installation

  • Initialize storage and confirm its status in the app.
  • Set event or continuous recording according to the model’s supported power mode.
  • Trigger a test event and play the saved local clip.
  • Check live view, audio, night image, notifications, and chime behavior.
  • Export a test clip and verify that the file opens.
  • Secure the account, review shared users, and enable available security updates.
  • Schedule battery checks or storage reviews so the system does not silently stop recording.

Which setup fits your goal?

Your priority Look for Watch for
No wiring work Battery doorbell with local microSD, built-in, or hub storage Battery mode may limit recording to events
24/7 local video A model that explicitly supports continuous recording in its wired or PoE mode Continuous recording may require a card, hub, and specific power arrangement
Keep the mechanical chime A documented charging-only or compatible-chime configuration Always-On modes may require a bypass
Maximum local retention The highest manufacturer-supported capacity for the exact model Capacity figures are model- and region-specific; larger cards may not work
Simple remote access Reliable Wi-Fi, a supported app, and secure account controls Local storage does not guarantee that every app feature is free or available offline

Once the model’s storage, power, and chime requirements line up with your home, a subscription-free installation is straightforward: install the supported local storage, wire or mount the doorbell safely, select the recording mode allowed by that power arrangement, and verify an actual saved clip before relying on it.
