The correct Victrola setup depends on four things: your exact model’s outputs, whether its phono preamp is enabled, whether your speakers are powered or passive, and whether you want a cable or Bluetooth connection. A Victrola with a suitable line-level output can connect directly to powered speakers by stereo RCA. A turntable without a phono preamp must go through an external phono preamp or a receiver’s PHONO input. Passive speakers always need an amplifier or receiver.
Before buying a cable or speaker, read the manual for the model number printed on your player and inspect the rear-panel labels. Bluetooth input for streaming a phone into the Victrola is not the same as Bluetooth output that sends record audio to an external wireless speaker.
First identify your Victrola’s signal path
Turntables do not all produce the same type of output. The cartridge creates a low-level phono signal. A phono preamp raises and equalizes that signal to line level, which is what ordinary RCA inputs on powered speakers, stereo amplifiers and receivers expect.

Some Victrola models include a built-in phono preamp and expose a line-level output. Others require external amplification. The control may be a PHONO/LINE switch, a labeled output mode, or a model-specific setting; some models do not offer a user switch at all. Do not assume that two Victrola players have identical controls simply because their cases look similar.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What to check on the player
- Find the exact model name and number on the rear panel, underside or rating label.
- Read the model manual for output type, preamp instructions, grounding requirements and playback controls.
- Look for RCA output jacks and labels such as LINE, AUDIO OUT, PHONO or PREAMP.
- Check whether the manual explicitly describes Bluetooth transmit/output. A Bluetooth logo or Bluetooth input alone does not prove that records can be transmitted to another speaker.
- Note any included adapter, RCA lead, speaker wire or other parts before purchasing replacements.
What to check on the speakers
- Powered (active) speakers: amplification is built into one or both cabinets. They can accept a suitable line-level input directly.
- Passive speakers: they contain no power amplifier. They require a receiver or separate amplifier between the turntable and the speaker terminals.
- Confirm the actual input type: stereo RCA, 3.5 mm analog, optical, Bluetooth or another connection. A plug that physically fits is not automatically electrically compatible.
Choose the connection route
Use the route that matches both the signal level and the speaker type. The table below shows what each arrangement needs and what you give up or gain.
| Route | Required equipment | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Victrola to powered speakers by RCA | A suitable line-level or preamped output and speakers with a matching RCA input | Few components and simple wiring, but every output and input must match |
| Victrola through a receiver to passive speakers | A receiver or amplifier, speaker wire, and a phono preamp in the Victrola or receiver | More wiring and settings, but the receiver powers passive speakers |
| Victrola to a wireless speaker by Bluetooth | A Victrola model with Bluetooth transmit capability and a pairable receiving speaker | Less cable routing; supported models and controls vary |
Equipment you already own can change the most practical choice. A powered bookshelf speaker with RCA input is a direct option when the Victrola supplies line-level audio. A phono preamp or receiver with a PHONO input is only necessary when the player’s output has not already been preamplified.
Prepare the turntable and workspace
- Place the player on a straight, level, stable surface away from vibration. Skipping and tracking problems can begin with an unstable or tilted surface.
- Unpack every component and compare it with the model manual. Victrola’s Hawthorne product FAQ gives the basic manufacturer instruction: “Start by unboxing your record player and making sure you have received all the correct pieces.” That is model-general advice, not a substitute for the manual for a different Victrola.
- Remove transport protection, ties or packing pieces only as directed by the manual. Install the platter, belt, counterweight, cartridge guard or other parts only when your model calls for them.
- Keep the volume low or the amplifier switched off while making connections. This prevents loud pops if a plug is inserted or an input is changed.
- Have the correct cable length ready. For analog stereo RCA, the red plug normally carries the right channel and the white plug the left channel.
Set up a Victrola with powered speakers using RCA
This is usually the simplest wired arrangement when the Victrola has a built-in phono preamp or another specified line-level output and the powered speakers have compatible RCA inputs.

- Switch off or mute the Victrola and powered speakers.
- Plug the RCA cable’s red connector into the turntable’s red/right output and the white connector into the white/left output. Match each connector with the corresponding speaker input; do not cross the channels unless you deliberately want left and right reversed.
- Connect the other red and white plugs to the powered speaker’s RCA input. If one cabinet contains the amplifier, connect the second cabinet with the supplied speaker link or cable as its instructions specify.
- Connect both devices to power and turn them on.
- Select the speaker input used for the RCA cable. The control may be labeled RCA, LINE, AUX or another model-specific name.
- Set the Victrola’s output mode exactly as its manual specifies. If it has a PHONO/LINE switch, a line-level powered-speaker connection generally requires the line setting; do not change a switch that your model does not document.
- Place a record on the platter, set the speed and start playback using the turntable’s controls. Raise the speaker volume gradually.
If your speakers have only a 3.5 mm analog input, use an appropriate, correctly wired adapter only when the manufacturer identifies the turntable output as line level. Do not use an adapter to bypass a missing phono preamp.
Set up a Victrola that does not have a built-in phono preamp
A phono-level output is too quiet and has the wrong equalization for a normal line input. You need one of two signal paths:
- External phono preamp: turntable to the preamp’s PHONO input, then the preamp’s LINE/OUTPUT to powered speakers or to a receiver’s ordinary line input.
- Receiver with a PHONO input: turntable to the receiver’s PHONO input, then let the receiver feed powered speakers or drive passive speakers.
Using an external phono preamp with powered speakers
- Turn off the turntable, preamp and speakers.
- Connect the turntable’s left/right output to the preamp’s PHONO input. Follow the manual for any ground wire; not every compact player exposes one.
- Connect the preamp’s line output to the powered speaker’s matching RCA or other analog input.
- Power the preamp and speakers, select the speaker input, and begin playback at low volume.
- Adjust the turntable’s documented output mode if it offers one. A player set to line output must not be sent into a separate PHONO input, because that applies phono gain twice and can produce severe distortion.
Using a receiver with a PHONO input
- Connect the turntable to the receiver’s PHONO left/right inputs.
- Connect powered speakers to a suitable receiver line output only if the receiver and speakers’ manuals support that arrangement.
- Select PHONO on the receiver, start playback, and raise the volume slowly.
Receiver input labels are not interchangeable. A receiver’s AUX, CD or LINE input normally expects line-level audio, while PHONO expects the un-preamped cartridge signal. Confirm the turntable’s output mode and the receiver label before switching on.

Connect passive speakers through a receiver or amplifier
Passive speakers cannot play from a turntable’s RCA output alone. RCA carries a low-power audio signal; it does not supply the speaker-driving power that passive cabinets need.

- If the Victrola has no preamp, connect it to the receiver’s PHONO input or insert an external phono preamp before a line input.
- If the Victrola has a built-in preamp and is set to line output, connect it to an appropriate receiver line input such as AUX or LINE, not PHONO.
- With the receiver turned off, connect the left and right passive speakers to the matching receiver speaker terminals using suitable speaker wire. Observe polarity at both ends if the equipment labels positive and negative terminals.
- Turn on the receiver, select the input used, start the record and increase volume gradually.
Do not connect passive speakers directly to powered-speaker outputs, a headphone jack or a turntable RCA jack unless the equipment manual specifically identifies that connection as a speaker output. Amplifier output stages and line outputs are different circuits.
Use Bluetooth when the Victrola can transmit record audio
Bluetooth output is available only on selected Victrola models. Victrola’s wireless guidance gives Wave and Automatic, plus Re-Spin and Eastwood Hybrid, as examples of models with Bluetooth output; that list is not a guarantee for every revision or regional version. Read your own manual for the exact transmit control and pairing behavior.

General Bluetooth pairing sequence
- Turn on the Victrola and enable its Bluetooth transmit or pairing mode using the documented button, selector or menu.
- Put the receiving wireless speaker into Bluetooth pairing mode. It must be able to receive audio; a speaker that only offers a wired Bluetooth transmitter function is not suitable.
- Wait for the Victrola and speaker to link. Follow the model manual if an indicator flashes, a tone sounds or a button must be held for a particular duration.
- Start a record and set the speaker volume. Keep the Victrola and speaker within the range recommended by their manufacturers and away from avoidable wireless interference.
Many record players also have Bluetooth input so a phone can stream music into the player’s own speakers. That is the opposite direction from transmitting the record’s audio to an external Bluetooth speaker. If the manual does not explicitly describe Bluetooth transmit/output, use a wired route instead.
Example: checking a speaker specification
Victrola’s Tempo Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers specification lists RCA and Bluetooth inputs and says an RCA cable is included. That makes the input side clear, but it does not establish universal compatibility with every Victrola turntable. You still must verify that your player supplies the correct line-level signal or place the required phono preamp or receiver in front of the speakers. Check the current specification and included-cable contents for the exact product version before purchasing.
Diagnose common setup problems
No sound from a wired connection
- Confirm the turntable and speakers or receiver are powered on.
- Verify that the speaker or receiver is set to the input where the cable is connected.
- Push each plug fully into the matching left/right jack and inspect the cable for damage.
- Check that the receiver is not muted and that the turntable is actually running with the stylus lowered as directed by its manual.
Very quiet or badly distorted audio
- Check the signal path for the required phono preamp. A phono output sent to a line input will normally be extremely quiet and tonally wrong.
- Check that a line-level output has not been connected to a receiver PHONO input, which can over-amplify it.
- Lower the volume before changing output-mode switches, then set the documented mode and reconnect if necessary.
Passive speakers remain silent
- Confirm that a powered receiver or amplifier is between the turntable and the speakers.
- Check that speaker wire is attached to the receiver’s speaker terminals, not to an RCA line output.
- Select the receiver input connected to the Victrola and verify that the receiver’s speaker output is enabled.
Bluetooth will not pair
- Confirm the Victrola model supports Bluetooth transmit, not merely Bluetooth input.
- Put the external speaker into its own pairing mode and disconnect it from another source if necessary.
- Restart pairing according to both manuals. If transmit is unsupported or unreliable on that model, use RCA, a preamp and powered speakers instead.
The record skips
- Recheck that the player is on a straight, level, stable surface.
- Remove transport materials and complete the model’s platter, belt, counterweight and tracking setup exactly as documented.
- Do not improvise tracking-force or anti-skate settings; consult the model manual for those controls.
Buying or replacing the necessary parts
Stereo RCA cable
Choose a stereo RCA audio cable with the connector type and length that match both devices. Red and white plugs should correspond to the right and left jacks. A longer cable is not automatically better; avoid unnecessary slack that can be pulled by foot traffic or vibration.

Powered bookshelf speakers with RCA input
These can be a straightforward choice for a Victrola with a suitable line-level output. Confirm whether the RCA input is analog line input and whether the package includes the cable or speaker-to-speaker connection required by that model.
Phono preamp or receiver with PHONO input
Buy this component only after checking that the Victrola lacks the required built-in preamp and that your speakers or amplifier cannot provide it. If the receiver already has a PHONO input, a separate preamp may be unnecessary.
