To set up a Valve Index from scratch, first confirm that your computer has a supported operating system, at least 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 970- or RX 480-class graphics card, a native DisplayPort 1.2 or newer output, USB, and broadband internet. Clear a room-scale area of at least 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft), position and power one or two SteamVR base stations, connect the headset’s DisplayPort, USB, and power leads, then use SteamVR’s Room Setup. The setup is complete when every device is solid green and the virtual floor and boundaries match the room.

Check compatibility before unpacking

The Index depends on both the computer and the tracking hardware. Check these requirements before mounting anything or troubleshooting a blank display.

Requirement Valve’s stated minimum or guidance Why it matters
Operating system Windows 10, SteamOS, or Linux The listed operating-system baseline for SteamVR and Index setup.
Processor Dual-core CPU with hyper-threading Provides the minimum CPU capability specified for the headset.
Memory 8 GB RAM Less memory can prevent the computer from meeting the stated baseline.
Graphics NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD RX 480 class, minimum Drives the headset display and VR rendering. Valve recommends a stronger GPU for better results.
Video output DisplayPort 1.2 or newer, connected directly to the graphics card The Index does not support HDMI or DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters.
USB USB 2.0 or newer required; USB 3.0 or newer recommended for headset cameras USB carries headset data, while faster USB is recommended for camera pass-through.
Internet Broadband connection Steam, SteamVR, downloads, updates, and account services require network access.

Confirm the graphics connection

Look at the rear of the graphics card, not the motherboard, and identify a native DisplayPort socket. The Index’s DisplayPort lead must connect to that socket. An HDMI adapter is not a supported workaround, so buying or using one will not solve an absent DisplayPort output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the software

  1. Install or update Steam.
  2. Install SteamVR from Steam.
  3. Install operating-system updates and the latest graphics driver for the installed GPU.
  4. Run Valve’s VR compatibility test before beginning the physical installation.

Close demanding applications while installing and updating. A driver update is especially important if SteamVR was installed previously for another headset or if the computer has just received a graphics-card change.

Prepare a safe play area

Room-scale tracking needs a genuinely clear area, not merely enough space for the headset when you stand still. Valve specifies at least 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft) of free space for Room Scale VR. Standing or seated play can use less space, but the boundary you draw in SteamVR must still keep your hands, controllers, and headset away from hazards.

Remove hazards before turning on tracking

  • Move furniture, floor lamps, boxes, and other objects outside the intended boundary.
  • Keep out of reach of walls, windows, stairs, and low ceilings.
  • Remove pets and anything that can move unexpectedly through the area.
  • Check the space with arms extended in every direction, including overhead, because controllers can reach farther than the headset.
  • Keep the route to the computer and power outlets clear so the headset cable cannot snag while you walk.

Do not draw the virtual boundary around an obstacle and assume the software will prevent every collision. The boundary is a warning system; it does not replace physical clearance.

Position and mount the base stations

The Index uses SteamVR tracking stations to establish the play space. One station is the minimum; Valve recommends two for room-scale coverage and more reliable tracking. Use stations from the same generation in one setup: do not mix version 1.0 and version 2.0 stations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Place and aim the stations

  1. Choose positions with a clear view of the entire play area. Mounting high or placing the stations low can work; the important requirement is an unobstructed view of the headset and controllers.
  2. Aim each station toward the center of the intended play area rather than at a nearby wall.
  3. Power each station and wait for it to start.
  4. Remove the protective film from each station’s lenses before use.
  5. Keep shelves, doors, curtains, and other objects from blocking the stations’ view.

With two stations, place them so their coverage overlaps across the area. If you use only one, expect less robust coverage and keep the headset and controllers in its view as much as possible.

Wall-mounting hardware

Valve’s wall-mount instructions call for a Phillips screwdriver and a drill with a 1/4-inch (6 mm) bit. Use anchors when fastening to drywall. Do not use drywall anchors when the screw is going directly into a wall stud. Tighten the mount securely, then aim the station toward the center before finalizing the position.

Choose the station layout that fits your use

One station can start a basic setup and is the minimum supported tracking arrangement. It can be useful for a compact standing or seated area, but the headset and controllers need to remain in that station’s view. Two stations are Valve’s recommendation for room-scale play because their overlapping coverage gives the system another view when you turn or reach near an edge.

Do not buy a second station from a different generation simply because it is available. A 1.0 and 2.0 station combination is not a supported setup. Match the generation of every station, power them all, and confirm that each one can see the play space before you begin calibration. If one station is temporarily unavailable, you can test with the other, but restore the recommended two-station arrangement for the most dependable room-scale coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Placement matters more than putting stations at a particular height. A high wall mount, a secure shelf, or another stable position can work when the station is aimed at the center and its view is unobstructed. Windows, mirrors, doors, curtains, and furniture should not interrupt the view between a station and the headset. If tracking fails only in one part of the room, inspect that line of sight before changing software settings.

Connect the Index headset correctly

With the computer off or ready at the desktop, connect the headset’s three required paths. Use the graphics card’s native DisplayPort for video, a computer USB port for data, and the supplied power adapter for power.

  1. Plug the headset DisplayPort lead into a DisplayPort output on the graphics card.
  2. Plug the headset USB lead into a USB port on the computer. USB 2.0 meets the stated minimum; USB 3.0 or newer is recommended when using the headset cameras.
  3. Connect the headset power adapter to the headset cable and to a wall outlet.
  4. Check that each connector is fully seated and that the cable is not under tension at the computer or headset.

Do not connect the video lead through HDMI or a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter. If the graphics card has no native DisplayPort output, resolve that hardware limitation before trying software fixes.

Plan the cable and power route

Before you start walking, identify the shortest safe route from the computer to the play area and keep the cable away from stairs, chair wheels, and doorways. Leave enough slack for head movement without creating a loop that can catch a foot. Keep the power adapter in a stable outlet and avoid placing the adapter where it can be pulled out when the headset cable moves. These are physical precautions rather than SteamVR settings, so handle them before drawing the boundary.

Start SteamVR and complete Room Setup

Launch and check device status

  1. Open Steam and start SteamVR from the VR button in the Steam client. You can also press the System button on a controller once the controller is available.
  2. Open the SteamVR status window and wait for every detected device to turn solid green.
  3. If a device remains gray, red, or otherwise not solid green, stop here and use the troubleshooting section rather than drawing a boundary around an incomplete setup.

Solid green status means SteamVR has recognized the relevant hardware. It does not by itself prove that the floor height or boundary is accurate, so Room Setup is still required.

Run the room procedure

  1. In SteamVR, choose Room Setup.
  2. Select the play mode that matches how you intend to use the Index. Room Scale is for a walkable area; standing or seated modes require less physical space.
  3. Follow the floor-height prompt. Place the controller on the floor as directed so SteamVR can establish the virtual floor.
  4. Set the forward direction and room orientation.
  5. Trace the usable boundary with the controller, keeping the outline inside the genuinely clear area.
  6. Finish the prompts and test the boundary from several positions.

Run Room Setup again whenever the virtual floor is too high or low, the front direction is wrong, or furniture changes the usable area. A fresh setup is also an appropriate first response when tracking appears shifted.

Calibrate in the right order

Do not compensate for a bad floor by moving the boundary, or compensate for a blocked station by repeating calibration. First make the physical area safe and the stations visible, then confirm all devices are green, and only then establish the floor, orientation, and boundary. If you move a station, rearrange furniture, or change from seated to room-scale use, repeat the relevant Room Setup steps instead of relying on the old room profile.

Pair and fit the controllers and headset

Controllers

Index Controllers are the natural match for the headset, but compatible Vive or Vive Pro wands can also be used. Pair or wake the controllers through SteamVR’s on-screen instructions and keep them within the base stations’ view while doing so. If a controller does not appear, treat it as a tracking or power problem after confirming the stations are powered and correctly aimed.

Headset fit

  1. Before putting the headset on, loosen the rear adjustment dial.
  2. Place the headset so the display is centered in front of your eyes.
  3. Turn the lens-distance adjustment until the image is clear and comfortable.
  4. Tighten the rear dial until the headset is snug without pressing painfully.
  5. Pull the top strap so it carries some of the headset’s weight on the top of your head.

A clear image depends on fit as well as software. If text is blurry at one eye or across the entire display, adjust lens distance and strap position before assuming the graphics connection has failed.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Make the fit adjustment while seated or standing in the cleared area, then look toward the edges of the display and read small text. A headset that is too loose can shift during movement and make a correct Room Setup feel inaccurate. Refit it before changing drivers or moving the stations.

Set up audio and the microphone

Headset speakers

  1. Leave SteamVR running.
  2. In Windows, open the sound output device list and select the Index audio device.
  3. In SteamVR, open Settings > Audio and select the Index playback device.
  4. Start a known audio source and adjust the headset volume.

If sound works in Windows but not in VR, check both selections. SteamVR can use a different playback device from the one selected as the general Windows output.

Microphone

For Index microphone input, select Digital Audio Interface (Valve VR Radio & HMD Mic) as the Windows recording device. Test the microphone in the application you intend to use after selecting it; applications can retain an older input choice even after Windows changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify audio before a long session

Play a short test sound and make a brief microphone recording before launching a demanding application. This separates an audio-device selection problem from a game-specific setting. If only one application lacks sound or voice input, check that application’s device choice after confirming the Windows and SteamVR selections.

What to do when setup fails

Use the symptom that matches what you see. Change one thing at a time so you can identify the cause.

A device is not solid green

  • Verify SteamVR’s installed files.
  • Update the graphics driver.
  • Exit and restart SteamVR.
  • Run Room Setup again if the problem is tracking or the play area.
  • Restart Windows if the device remains unavailable.

These steps address software state, driver state, and a stale room profile in that order. If the same device remains unavailable after a Windows restart, continue with the cable and hardware checks below.

The headset is not detected or the display disconnects

  1. Close SteamVR.
  2. Reseat the DisplayPort, USB, and power connections at every accessible junction.
  3. Confirm the DisplayPort lead is connected to the graphics card and not a motherboard video output.
  4. Restart SteamVR.
  5. In SteamVR, choose Devices > Restart headset.
  6. If the display still disconnects, restart Windows and test again.

A native DisplayPort connection is mandatory. Replacing it with HDMI or an adapter is outside the supported configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tracking is lost or the boundary is wrong

  • Confirm each base station is powered.
  • Make sure the stations face the center of the area and have an unobstructed view of the headset.
  • Check that protective film has been removed from the station lenses.
  • Check that the stations are not a mixed 1.0 and 2.0 installation.
  • Run Room Setup again and redraw the boundary from the correct floor level.

If the problem occurs only at one edge of the room, look for an obstruction between that part of the play area and a station. If the entire room is shifted, a fresh floor and orientation calibration is more likely to help than moving the boundary alone.

SteamVR crashes or hangs

Use SteamVR safe mode to prevent some third-party drivers and components from loading. If SteamVR works in safe mode, investigate recently installed utilities or drivers that integrate with SteamVR and remove or update the conflicting component. Return to normal mode only after the conflict is addressed.

Base-station errors

Verify power first, then confirm that all stations belong to the same generation. A 1.0 station and a 2.0 station should not be mixed in the same setup. After correcting power or compatibility, restart SteamVR and run Room Setup again.

When a driver utility is offered

SteamVR and Valve do not require third-party driver-updater software. The supported first step is to obtain the current graphics driver for the installed GPU from its manufacturer and then restart SteamVR or Windows as needed. If you choose an optional utility such as Outbyte Driver Updater, treat it as third-party software, review what it will change, and do not mistake it for a Valve requirement or endorsement.

First successful session checklist

  • Computer meets the listed CPU, RAM, GPU, DisplayPort, USB, operating-system, and internet requirements.
  • Play area contains at least 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft) of clear room-scale space, when using Room Scale.
  • One or two correctly powered stations face the center with a clear line of sight.
  • Index DisplayPort is connected directly to the graphics card; USB and power are connected.
  • SteamVR shows every device as solid green.
  • Room Setup has an accurate floor, front direction, and boundary.
  • Headset lens distance, rear dial, and top strap are comfortable.
  • Index playback and microphone devices are selected in Windows and, for playback, in SteamVR.

Once these checks pass, start with a stationary application and move around the boundary slowly. This confirms that the virtual floor, tracking coverage, cable routing, and audio are all usable before a demanding room-scale session.

Valve Index setup FAQ

Can I use HDMI instead of DisplayPort?

No. Valve specifies a native DisplayPort 1.2 or newer connection from the graphics card. HDMI and DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters are unsupported, so an adapter is not a reliable fix for a computer without a suitable DisplayPort output.

How much room does room-scale VR require?

Valve specifies at least 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft) of free space. Remove furniture, obstacles, stairs, windows, and pets from the area, and leave additional clearance for outstretched arms and controllers. Standing or seated modes can use less space.

Do I need two base stations?

One station is the minimum. Valve recommends two for room-scale use and more dependable coverage. Whichever number you use, power the stations, aim them at the center, and keep an unobstructed view of the headset and controllers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I mix Base Station 1.0 and 2.0?

No. Use stations from the same generation. A mixed 1.0 and 2.0 installation can produce base-station errors and is not the supported arrangement.

Why is the headset not detected?

Check that DisplayPort is connected to the graphics card, not the motherboard, and reseat DisplayPort, USB, and power at every accessible junction. Restart SteamVR, use Devices > Restart headset, update the graphics driver, and restart Windows if necessary.

Why is tracking correct in one area but lost at the edge?

Inspect the line of sight between that edge and each station. Doors, curtains, shelves, furniture, or another obstruction may block the station. Re-aim the stations toward the center, remove obstructions, and run Room Setup again.

What should I do if SteamVR crashes?

Start SteamVR in safe mode to prevent some third-party drivers and components from loading. If the crash disappears, investigate utilities or drivers that integrate with SteamVR and update or remove the conflicting component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is there no sound or microphone input?

With SteamVR running, select the Index playback device in Windows and under SteamVR Settings > Audio. For the microphone, select Digital Audio Interface (Valve VR Radio & HMD Mic) as the Windows recording device, then check the application’s own input setting.

When should I run Room Setup again?

Repeat it when the virtual floor, front direction, or boundary is wrong; when furniture changes the usable area; after moving a station; or when tracking appears shifted. Correct physical placement and line of sight first, then recalibrate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What PC specs are required for a Valve Index?

Valve lists Windows 10, SteamOS, or Linux; a dual-core CPU with hyper-threading; 8 GB RAM; GTX 970- or RX 480-class graphics; DisplayPort 1.2 or newer; USB 2.0 or newer; and broadband internet. USB 3.0 or newer is recommended for headset cameras.

Can I set up the Index with only one base station?

Yes. One station is the minimum, but Valve recommends two for room-scale coverage and more reliable tracking. Keep the headset and controllers in the station’s unobstructed view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why must every device be solid green before Room Setup?

Solid green indicates that SteamVR has recognized the relevant hardware. If a device is gray or red, fix that connection, driver, power, or tracking issue first; Room Setup cannot correct missing hardware.

Is a larger room required for seated VR?

No. Valve’s 2 m × 1.5 m minimum applies to Room Scale VR. Standing or seated play can use less space, although the boundary and cable route must still be safe.

What tools are needed to wall-mount a base station?

Valve’s wall-mount instructions call for a Phillips screwdriver and a drill with a 1/4-inch (6 mm) bit. Use anchors in drywall, but omit them when fastening directly into a wall stud.

Should I run a third-party driver updater?

No third-party updater is required by Valve. Start with the current graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer. Optional utilities such as Outbyte Driver Updater are not Valve requirements or endorsements.

The Bottom Line

A reliable Valve Index installation is mostly an order-of-operations exercise: verify the PC and native DisplayPort, clear at least 2 m × 1.5 m for room scale, use same-generation powered stations with clear line of sight, connect DisplayPort, USB, and power, wait for solid-green SteamVR status, and complete Room Setup. Recheck cables, drivers, station placement, and calibration before replacing hardware.
