Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
To run Valhelsia 3 successfully, install 64-bit Java 8, download the matching Valhelsia 3 Server Pack, allocate at least 4GB of memory, accept Minecraft’s EULA, and configure the resulting Forge server. Every player must install the same Valhelsia 3 release and Minecraft/Forge generation. The latest listed server pack is Valhelsia 3 – 3.5.1 – SERVER, released March 21, 2022.
Check compatibility before installing
Valhelsia 3 is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.16.5. It is not interchangeable with another Valhelsia release, a different Minecraft version, or a different Forge generation. The server pack and every client need to match exactly, including the release number. A player using another release can see missing-mod errors, be rejected during login, or encounter world and registry mismatches.

| Item | Requirement or guidance | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft generation | 1.16.5 | Valhelsia 3’s mods and Forge build target this generation. |
| Server software | Valhelsia 3 Server Pack, not a copied client instance | The server pack includes the Forge server files, libraries, scripts, and server-side configuration. |
| Java | 64-bit Temurin 8 (Java 8) | Valhelsia 3 follows the Java 8 branch for Minecraft 1.16-era packs. 32-bit Java or another major version is a common startup failure. |
| Server memory | At least 4GB allocated; many installations need 4–8GB | Mods, entities, players, and generated chunks require more memory than a vanilla server. |
| Disk space | Leave room for world growth and backups | The official guidance does not specify a minimum disk size, and pre-generated terrain can consume substantial space. |
| Network | Stable connection; wired networking is preferable for a home host | World saves and player traffic are less vulnerable to wireless instability. |
Do not run the server on the same computer used to play the pack if you can avoid it. A separate machine or hosting instance leaves CPU, memory, and disk resources available for the server and makes restarts and maintenance less disruptive.
Choose self-hosting or a managed server
Self-hosting is appropriate when you control the machine and router and are comfortable maintaining Java, firewall rules, backups, and updates. A managed host supplies a pre-provisioned environment and support, but you trade some low-level control for convenience and a recurring fee.

| Consideration | Self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Control and customization | Full access to files, scripts, Java arguments, backups, and configuration. | Access depends on the provider’s panel and plan. |
| Setup effort | You install Java, extract the pack, configure the server, and maintain it. | The environment is usually provisioned for you; you still select the correct pack release and configure gameplay. |
| Network administration | You must configure router port forwarding and the host firewall for outside players. | The provider handles its network; you connect players using the address it supplies. |
| Cost pattern | No hosting bill, but you provide the hardware, electricity, storage, and internet service. | Recurring hosting cost; current prices vary by location, memory, and provider. |
| Backups and recovery | You are responsible for scheduled copies and testing restoration. | Backup tools may be available, but check retention and restoration terms. |
| Support | Your own troubleshooting and community documentation. | Provider support can help with the platform, while modpack problems remain your responsibility. |
| Best fit | Owners who want maximum control or already have an always-on machine. | Groups that want an always-available server without managing a home network. |
The official Valhelsia server guide names BisectHosting as an easy hosting option. Treat that as a convenience recommendation rather than a performance guarantee, and verify current availability, region, pricing, and terms before ordering.
Download the correct Valhelsia 3 server pack
- Open the Valhelsia 3 project’s Files tab on CurseForge.
- Find the Additional Files area and select the Server Pack for the release you intend to play.
- For the latest listed release, choose Valhelsia 3 – 3.5.1 – SERVER (March 21, 2022), unless your group deliberately uses an earlier release.
- Create a dedicated folder for the server and extract the archive there. Give the account that will run the server write permission to this folder.
Do not make a server by copying only the client’s instance directory. Client files are not a substitute for the dedicated server pack and can leave out the server’s Forge launcher, libraries, scripts, or expected configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInstall 64-bit Java 8
Use a 64-bit Temurin 8 installation. Valhelsia’s guide directs Windows and macOS users to Adoptium’s Temurin 8 LTS build. On Linux, use the package command for your distribution:
- Debian or Ubuntu:
sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jre - Fedora, RHEL, or CentOS:
su -c "yum install java-1.8.0-openjdk"
After installation, confirm that the command your start script will use resolves to Java 8 and that the installation is 64-bit. If the server immediately exits, a Java-version mismatch should be one of the first checks. Installing a second Java version does not help unless the Valhelsia script is actually pointed at the Java 8 executable.
Set memory and perform the first launch
The supplied scripts use conservative defaults. Open the server-start script in a text editor and raise its memory values where the machine has capacity. Begin with at least 4GB for the server; the guide describes 4–8GB as the usual range and recommends at least 4GB for a 5–7-player installation using its named hosting option. Do not assign all of the host’s RAM: the operating system, Java overhead, file cache, and any other services also need memory.

- On Windows, run
ServerStart.bat. On Linux or macOS, runServerStart.shfrom the extracted server directory. If a Unix system refuses to execute the script, grant it execute permission and run it from that directory. - The first run normally creates files and then stops because no EULA decision has been recorded.
- Open
eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you agree to it. - Run the same start script again. This run creates the main server files, including
server.properties, and begins the Forge startup process.
Keep the server window or terminal available while testing. Startup messages reveal whether Java launched correctly, whether Forge loaded, and whether a mod or configuration file caused a stop.
Configure server.properties before inviting players
Stop the server cleanly before editing configuration. Type /stop in the server console, wait for the save to finish, and then open server.properties in a text editor.
World type and flight handling
- For Quark’s Realistic World Type, the official Valhelsia guide documents
level-type=realistic. - On a modded server, change
allow-flight=falsetoallow-flight=true. The guide recommends this because some mods use flight-like movement and can otherwise trigger anti-flight handling.
World-generation settings are applied when a world is created. If you changed a generation setting after the first launch, stop the server and remove the existing world folder before restarting. This permanently removes that world, so copy it somewhere safe first if it contains anything you want to preserve.
Access control
If you enable the whitelist, add players from the console after the server is running:
/whitelist add YourPlayerName

/op YourPlayerName
Use the exact in-game name. Keep operator access limited because it permits administrative commands that can alter or destroy the world.
Start the server and verify it locally
- Run the appropriate start script again and wait until Forge finishes loading rather than closing the window immediately.
- From the same machine, launch the matching Valhelsia 3 client and connect using the server address appropriate for a local connection.
- Join, move around, place and break a few blocks, and stop the server with
/stopto confirm that saves complete normally. - Restart once more before opening access to friends. This separates installation problems from router or firewall problems.
If the server and client report different mod lists or registry contents, stop and compare the exact Valhelsia release, Minecraft version, and Forge generation before changing files by hand.
Allow friends outside your home network to connect
Players on the same home network may be able to connect using the server computer’s local address. Internet players require the router to forward the Minecraft server port to that computer. The exact menu names differ by router, so follow its documentation and create a rule pointing to the server machine’s local address and the port configured in server.properties.
- Give the server machine a stable local address, either with a reserved DHCP lease or a correctly configured static address.
- Create the router’s port-forwarding rule for the port the server uses, targeting that local address.
- Allow the same server application or port through the host operating system’s firewall. A router rule alone cannot bypass a blocked host firewall.
- Start the server and have a friend test from a different network, such as mobile data. Testing from inside the same LAN can produce misleading results on routers that do not support hairpin connections.
Do not publish your home address or grant router administration access to players. If your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections, ordinary forwarding may not work; a managed host or another network design may be required.
Reduce exploration lag with chunk pre-generation
Large modpacks can pause while generating terrain for the first time. The Valhelsia guide recommends pre-generating chunks before players explore widely. This consumes CPU time, disk space, and potentially a long period of server availability, so choose a radius that matches your storage and play area rather than blindly generating an enormous world.

For Forge packs of this generation, the guide gives this administrative example for the Overworld:
/forge generate 0 0 0 100000 minecraft:overworld
Run the corresponding generation operation for the Nether and End as needed, using the dimension identifiers and syntax documented for your installed Forge/modpack build. Wait for each operation to finish before starting another. Keep a backup before a large generation job and monitor free disk space.

Install the client for every player
Each player should install the same Valhelsia 3 release selected for the server. Valhelsia documents launchers including CurseForge, GDLauncher, and ATLauncher; their memory controls and import steps differ, but the required pack version does not.
- Select the exact release number used by the server rather than simply installing “Valhelsia 3” and accepting an automatic update.
- Allocate enough client memory for the pack. CurseForge lists 5–6GB as a normal client recommendation, rising to 6–8GB when using OptiFine, high render distance, higher video settings, HD resource packs, or shaders.
- Use a legally purchased Minecraft account. Launchers that permit play without purchasing Minecraft are unsupported by the installation guidance.
- Enter the server address only after the client reaches the matching Minecraft and Forge version.
Client memory and server memory are separate allocations. Giving a client 8GB does not add RAM to the server, and assigning nearly all host memory to the server can make the operating system unstable.

The script closes immediately
- Confirm that the script is using 64-bit Java 8, not a different Java installation.
- Run the script from a terminal so the error remains visible, then inspect the newest log in the server directory.
- Check that the extracted folder is writable and that the memory values do not exceed available RAM.
The server says the EULA has not been accepted
Stop the process, open the generated eula.txt, and verify that the line is exactly eula=true. Save it in the server directory, not in a similarly named download folder, and start the same script again.

Players cannot join
- Check that the server is fully started and listening on the port shown in
server.properties. - For local players, verify the server machine’s local address. For internet players, verify the router target and host firewall rule.
- Compare the client’s exact pack release, Minecraft version, and Forge generation with the server.
- If the whitelist is enabled, add the player’s correct name with
/whitelist add YourPlayerName.
The server lags during play
First verify that the pack is current and that the server has enough allocated memory. The Valhelsia guide suggests using Minecraft’s debug profiler and the Spark mod to identify tick, CPU, memory, and disk bottlenecks. Pre-generating a reasonable area can prevent repeated terrain-generation spikes, but it will not fix a Java mismatch, an overloaded machine, or a network bottleneck.

A changed world setting has no effect
World-generation options do not rewrite terrain that already exists. Stop the server, back up the world, remove the old world folder, and restart so a new world is generated with the setting. Do this only when you accept losing that world or have a restorable copy.
Update Valhelsia 3 without corrupting the world
Updates can replace mods, Forge, configuration defaults, and scripts. Treat an update as a controlled migration rather than copying a few new files over the old installation.
- Read the new release changelog and confirm that every player will install the same release.
- Tell players the server will be offline and stop it with
/stop. Wait for the save to complete. - Make a complete backup of the server directory, especially the world, configuration, scripts, and any custom files.
- Download the replacement Valhelsia 3 Server Pack for the target release.
- Following the official procedure, remove old
config, defaultconfigs, libraries, openloader, mods, kubejs, andscriptsfolders when they are present. Remove the old Forge jar as well. - Copy the new pack contents into the server directory. Folder names vary by release, so do not delete unrelated files outside the documented server directory.
- Restore deliberate custom changes, such as selected server properties, whitelist data, and carefully reviewed scripts. Do not blindly restore old mod or configuration folders over the new pack.
- Start the server and watch the log for missing dependencies, registry errors, or world-conversion messages before allowing players back in.
- Have every player install the same new release before reconnecting.
Keep the backup until the updated world has been opened, tested, and saved successfully. If the update fails, stop the server, restore the backup, and return clients to the previously working release while you investigate.
Operate the server safely after setup
- Stop with
/stoprather than killing the process so the world and mod data are flushed correctly. - Schedule complete backups and retain at least one copy outside the server machine.
- Do not edit files while the server is running unless the specific mod documents a safe reload procedure.
- Keep operator privileges and router administration limited to trusted people.
- Record the installed Valhelsia release, Java version, memory allocation, and custom properties so a rebuild is reproducible.
- Monitor free disk space, particularly after chunk pre-generation or several world backups.
Once the server survives a local test, an outside-network connection, and a clean stop-and-restart cycle, it is ready for regular play. The most important maintenance rule remains version matching: update the server and every client as one coordinated change.
