Connect the controller to the host first, confirm that the operating system or TV sees it, then let RetroArch autoconfigure it or bind the controls manually. For an NES core such as Mesen, assign a standard joypad and verify D-pad, A, B, Select and Start. On Google TV or Android TV, configure D-pad, confirm and Back before launching a game; for two-player games, assign each physical controller to a separate RetroArch port.

Choose USB or Bluetooth before opening the emulator

The connection method determines what the host must support and how you recover when the controller is not detected. USB is wired and needs a compatible data cable and a working USB port. Bluetooth is wireless and needs a charged controller, pairing mode and a host with a compatible Bluetooth stack.

Consideration USB Bluetooth
What you need A compatible data cable and an available USB port on the PC or TV box. A charged controller, pairing mode and Bluetooth on the PC, Android device or Google TV device.
Initial setup Plug in the cable, then check that the host lists the gamepad. Open the host’s Bluetooth settings, choose pair-new-device and select the controller.
Typical failure point A charge-only cable, damaged cable or unsuitable USB port can prevent detection. An old pairing record, a controller that is not in pairing mode or a low battery can prevent discovery.
RetroArch handling RetroArch can autoconfigure known pads or accept a manual RetroPad mapping. RetroArch can autoconfigure known pads after pairing, or you can create and save a manual mapping.
NES suitability Works when the host exposes the D-pad, A, B, Select and Start inputs. Works when the host exposes those same inputs and maintains a reliable Bluetooth connection.

Official documentation does not establish a universal latency winner between USB and Bluetooth. Choose the method your computer or TV supports reliably, and judge a particular controller by its host compatibility, D-pad feel, available profile and working menu buttons rather than by the connection label alone.

Check compatibility before configuring RetroArch

Use this checklist before opening a game:

  • Host ports or wireless support: Confirm that the PC has a suitable USB port or Bluetooth capability. For a TV setup, check the ports on the TV box or streaming device rather than assuming the television panel accepts every controller.
  • Controller power: Charge a Bluetooth pad. A wired pad still needs a data-capable cable; a cable that only supplies power will not expose controls.
  • NES controls: The controller must provide a directional pad and four functional actions for a standard NES game: A, B, Select and Start.
  • TV navigation inputs: A TV interface also needs D-pad, confirm/OK and Back bindings. A voice remote that has not been configured as a RetroArch input cannot substitute for these controls.
  • Profile availability: RetroArch may already have an autoconfiguration profile for a known controller. If not, plan to bind the controls manually and save a profile.
  • Multiplayer: If you intend to play two-player NES games, have both controllers connected before assigning RetroArch Port 1 and Port 2.

Connect a USB controller on a PC

  1. Use a compatible data cable to connect the controller directly to the computer. If you are using a detachable cable, make sure it is fully seated at both ends.
  2. Wait for the operating system to finish detecting the gamepad. Do not start by changing emulator settings; first establish that the computer itself lists the device.
  3. Open the operating system’s game-controller or input-device list and confirm that the pad appears. The exact screen differs between Windows, macOS and Linux, but the test is the same: the host must recognize the controller before RetroArch can use it.
  4. If the gamepad is absent, move the cable to another USB port and try another known data cable. A different port can also reveal whether the original port is the problem.
  5. Once the host sees the pad, launch RetroArch. Keep the controller connected while RetroArch starts so its joypad driver can enumerate it consistently.

RetroArch’s profile system accounts for differences in how Windows, macOS and Linux enumerate buttons. A controller can therefore have a different underlying button order on each operating system while still being mapped to the same virtual RetroPad.

Pair a Bluetooth controller with Android or Google TV

  1. Charge the controller and put it into its Bluetooth pairing mode. Use the controller’s own pairing procedure; a pad that is merely powered on may not be discoverable.
  2. On the Android or Google TV device, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device.
  3. Wait for the controller’s name to appear in the device list, then select it. Accept the pairing request if one is shown.
  4. Return to Settings > Connected devices and verify that the controller is listed as connected before launching RetroArch.
  5. If it does not appear, charge the controller, remove an old Bluetooth pairing for that pad and repeat pairing mode. If a wired option is available, test the same controller over USB to separate a Bluetooth problem from a controller or host problem.

Android documents both wired and Bluetooth controller connections. Google TV and Android TV add an important requirement: the controller must operate the ten-foot interface, not just the game. Test D-pad movement, a confirm/OK action and Back in the TV menus before assuming the emulator is at fault.

Let RetroArch autoconfigure a known controller

RetroArch maps the physical controls to a virtual controller called a RetroPad. Its joypad autoconfiguration system can recognize a known controller and load a matching profile so it works without a complete manual mapping.

  1. With the controller connected or paired, open RetroArch’s main menu.
  2. Move through the menu with the D-pad and confirm that the controller can select items. On a TV, this test must succeed before you launch a game.
  3. Open the input settings and check which device RetroArch assigned to Port 1. If the expected controller is selected, leave the automatic profile in place and test it in a game.
  4. Press D-pad directions, A, B, Select and Start in an NES game. Check that each physical control performs the intended action.

Autoconfiguration is convenient, but it is not a guarantee for every model or operating-system combination. If the controller is unknown, buttons are missing or the layout is wrong, use the manual binding path instead of repeatedly reconnecting the pad.

Map a controller manually and save the profile

Manual mapping is the reliable fallback when no profile is available or the automatic layout does not match your preferred A/B arrangement.

  1. Open Settings > Input > RetroPad Binds > Port 1 Controls > Set All Controls.
  2. When RetroArch asks for each input, press the corresponding physical control. Complete the D-pad, face buttons, Select, Start and any other prompts you want available to the frontend.
  3. When the sequence finishes, return to the controller-binding screen and choose Save Controller Profile.
  4. Disconnect and reconnect the controller, then confirm that RetroArch loads the saved profile and that the menu remains navigable.

Saving matters because a successful one-time mapping does not automatically make the same pad reliable after a restart or on another host. The saved profile gives RetroArch a reusable description of that controller’s button numbering.

Set the NES controller type in the Mesen core

NES and Famicom cores expose their own device choices. In the Mesen core, select a joypad device for the player:

  1. Open the core’s input or controls menu after loading Mesen.
  2. For the player, choose Auto – Joypad or Standard Controller – Joypad.
  3. Verify the five controls that every standard NES game needs: D-pad, A, B, Select and Start.
  4. Launch a game and test all five controls, including Select and Start. These two buttons are often overlooked because they are used less frequently than movement and A/B.

If the core reports a joypad but a game still does not respond, return to the RetroPad binding and check the physical button assigned to each virtual input. A controller can be visible to the host and to RetroArch while still having an incorrect NES mapping.

Make RetroArch usable on a TV

A PC user can fall back to a keyboard or mouse when a menu action is missing. A TV user generally cannot, so configure navigation before game controls.

Required TV actions

  • D-pad: Moves through RetroArch’s menus and game lists.
  • Confirm/OK: Opens a selected item, accepts a setting or launches a game.
  • Back: Returns to the previous menu or closes a screen.

TV setup sequence

  1. Pair or plug in the controller and verify it under Settings > Connected devices on Android or Google TV.
  2. Open RetroArch and test D-pad movement, confirm and Back before loading a core.
  3. If one of those actions is missing, open Settings > Input > RetroPad Binds > Port 1 Controls > Set All Controls and assign the missing inputs.
  4. Choose Save Controller Profile, then exit and reopen the menu to verify that the TV remains controllable.
  5. Only after menu navigation works should you launch the NES core and test gameplay buttons.

An unconfigured voice remote cannot replace a properly configured RetroArch navigation profile. It may operate the television interface while leaving RetroArch without the D-pad, confirm or Back events it needs.

Set up two controllers for two-player NES games

Two physical pads must be connected and assigned to separate RetroArch ports. Connecting both devices is not enough if RetroArch sends both to Port 1.

  1. Connect the first controller by USB or Bluetooth and complete its profile or manual mapping.
  2. Connect the second controller and wait until the PC or Android/Google TV host lists it as a separate device.
  3. In RetroArch, open Settings > Input > RetroPad Binds.
  4. Open Port 1 Controls and set its Device Index to the first physical controller. Save that controller’s profile if you mapped it manually.
  5. Open Port 2 Controls and set its Device Index to the second physical controller. Save its profile as well.
  6. Launch a two-player NES game and have each player press a direction, A, B, Select and Start where the game uses them. Confirm that actions from one pad do not move the other player’s character.

If both players control the same character, revisit the two Device Index settings. The usual cause is that both RetroPad ports point to the same physical device, not a fault in the game itself.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The host does not list the controller

  • For USB, replace the cable with a known data-capable cable and try another USB port.
  • For Bluetooth, charge the controller, re-enter pairing mode and remove the old pairing before trying again.
  • On Android or Google TV, return to Settings > Connected devices and confirm the device is actually connected, not merely remembered.

The controller works in a game but not in the RetroArch menu

Map the frontend navigation inputs, especially D-pad, confirm/OK and Back. A core can receive gameplay input even when the RetroArch menu lacks a complete navigation profile. Use the manual RetroPad binding path and save the profile.

The menu works but NES buttons are wrong

Recheck the Mesen device selection and the assignments for D-pad, A, B, Select and Start. If A and B feel reversed, change the core’s control remap or the controller binding deliberately. A core remap changes gameplay input without changing the menu’s A/B behavior, so adjust the layer where the problem actually occurs.

One of two controllers is ignored

Open Port 1 Controls and Port 2 Controls and inspect each Device Index. Assign a different physical device to each port, then save both profiles and retest in a two-player game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same controller changes behavior after reconnection

Check whether RetroArch loaded the intended profile. If you mapped the pad manually but did not choose Save Controller Profile, repeat the mapping and save it. Also verify that the host is not presenting a different controller or connection mode under a new device entry.

How to compare controllers for NES use

When choosing between controllers, evaluate the complete setup rather than a single specification:

Comparison axis What to verify Why it matters for NES games
Connection options USB, Bluetooth or both, and whether the required cable is included or compatible. Determines whether the controller can connect to your PC, TV box or Android device.
Host compatibility Support for the computer’s ports and operating system, or the TV device’s Bluetooth and USB implementation. A controller cannot be configured in RetroArch until the host exposes it as an input device.
RetroArch profile Whether RetroArch has an autoconfiguration profile for the model. A known profile reduces setup time; an unknown pad requires manual binding.
D-pad quality Directional precision and a comfortable way to hold diagonal or repeated inputs. NES games rely heavily on directional movement, often more than on analog sticks.
Profile persistence Whether you can save a stable RetroArch controller profile. A saved profile prevents a successful mapping from becoming a one-session fix.
TV navigation Working D-pad, confirm/OK and Back inputs. These controls are required to operate RetroArch on a TV without a keyboard or mouse.

No official source establishes a universal USB-versus-Bluetooth latency winner. Test the controller on the host you actually intend to use and prioritize detection, mapping stability and D-pad behavior.

A repeatable setup recipe

For most installations, this order minimizes wasted troubleshooting:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
