Connect and pair the controller in your operating system first, verify that the host can read its buttons, then launch KytyPS5 and test a game menu. If the controller was added after KytyPS5 started and does not appear, close and restart the emulator as a diagnostic. KytyPS5 uses SDL3 for input, but its current documentation does not publish a controller compatibility list, setup wizard, or user-facing remapping procedure.
What KytyPS5 actually documents about controllers
KytyPS5 identifies SDL3 as one of its underlying libraries. SDL3 supplies the controller-detection layer, while KytyPS5 consumes the devices that SDL reports. The KytyPS5 README does not describe a separate controller setup screen, a supported third-party-controller list, or exact button-remapping steps.
That distinction matters when troubleshooting. SDL3 documentation explains what the library can recognize in general; it does not guarantee that every SDL-compatible device will work in every KytyPS5 build. Likewise, finding a custom SDL mapping on the internet does not prove that KytyPS5 exposes a way to enter or load it.
KytyPS5 lists Windows and Linux as its primary targets and macOS support as experimental. The project also warns that compatibility, stability, and performance can change substantially between versions. Record the exact KytyPS5 build and operating system before treating a behavior as a permanent compatibility result.

Prepare the controller and your test conditions
- Have the controller, its USB cable or Bluetooth connection, and a charged battery if it is wireless.
- Know whether you are testing Windows, Linux, or experimental macOS support.
- Keep the KytyPS5 version number visible or record it before changing settings.
- Choose a game that reaches a responsive menu so you can test directional input, face buttons, a shoulder button, and an analog stick.
- Decide whether the first test will use USB or Bluetooth. Do not change connection methods until you have recorded the result of the first test.
No particular controller model, adapter, cable, or printed guide is required by KytyPS5 documentation. The useful evidence is whether the host operating system detects the device and whether SDL3 presents it to KytyPS5.
Set up the controller step by step
1. Connect or pair it in the host operating system
For a wired test, connect the controller directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub. Wait for the operating system to finish registering the device before opening KytyPS5.
For Bluetooth, put the controller into its pairing mode, open the operating system’s Bluetooth device list, select the controller, and wait until the status changes to connected or paired. If the operating system shows several entries, select the gamepad entry rather than a similarly named audio or keyboard profile.

SDL3 can report gamepads that are present when an application initializes and can also report devices added later through device events, as described in its SDL_GamepadDeviceEvent documentation. KytyPS5’s README does not promise identical hotplug behavior for every platform or build, so a controller connected before launch is the most controlled first test.
2. Confirm that the host can read the buttons
Before blaming the emulator, open the host system’s controller or input test view and press several controls. You should be able to see at least the directional controls, face buttons, a shoulder or trigger control, and movement on an analog stick.

On Windows, a convenient built-in check is the Game Controllers panel: press Win+R, enter joy.cpl, select the device, choose Properties, and use the Test tab. The labels and layout may differ for an unusual device, but the controls should respond consistently.
On Linux, use the controller-testing panel supplied by your desktop environment or another local input tester. Confirm that the device appears and that button and axis values change when you move the controls. This verifies the host connection; it does not by itself prove that KytyPS5 will classify the device as a standardized gamepad.
If the host cannot see the controller, stop here. Re-pair Bluetooth, try a different USB port or cable, remove a stale Bluetooth pairing, and check whether another application has exclusive access. An emulator cannot receive input that the operating system has not exposed.
3. Launch KytyPS5 after the host test succeeds
Start KytyPS5 only after the controller passes the host-level test. Open a game that reaches a menu and try navigation, selection, cancellation, shoulder buttons, and both sticks. Test more than one control because a device can be visible while one axis or button is reported incorrectly.
Do not expect a first-run controller wizard. The reviewed KytyPS5 documentation does not identify one, so the practical confirmation is a responsive game menu rather than a setup dialog.

4. Restart if a device added after launch is missing
If the controller worked in the operating system but KytyPS5 does not react, close the emulator, leave the controller connected or paired, and start KytyPS5 again. This restart is a diagnostic, not proof that hotplug is unsupported. SDL3 has events for devices added while an application is running, but the KytyPS5 README does not establish that every KytyPS5 build handles those events identically.
After restarting, repeat the same game-menu test. If the controller works only when present before launch, record that exact pattern; it is more useful than simply reporting that “the controller does not work.”
How SDL3 mappings affect what you see
SDL3 separates a generic joystick from a standardized gamepad. A joystick can expose arbitrary buttons, axes, and hat switches. A gamepad mapping translates a device into a conventional layout so an application can ask for functions such as a left stick, a face button, or a shoulder button without knowing the device’s original numbering.
SDL3 includes mappings for many popular controllers and allows additional mappings for devices it does not recognize. The capabilities and mapping model are described in the SDL3 gamepad documentation. Built-in coverage means that many devices can work in principle; it is not a KytyPS5 compatibility guarantee.
If KytyPS5 shows an unexpected button order, missing trigger, or unusable axis, first determine whether the host test also shows the same error. A matching error at both levels points to the device, connection, or host-side classification. Correct host input followed by incorrect in-game input points toward SDL classification or KytyPS5’s handling of that device.

The current KytyPS5 README does not document a controller-mapping screen or a supported method for entering custom SDL mappings. Do not assume that an SDL mapping string can be pasted into a KytyPS5 configuration file unless a future KytyPS5 release explicitly documents that workflow.
Troubleshoot by symptom

Linux: understand the documented hotplug dependency
The KytyPS5 README specifically warns that omitting the audio, Wayland, and udev development packages while building on Linux can leave SDL3 without working gamepad hotplug support. These are build-dependency notes. They are relevant when you compile KytyPS5 yourself or maintain a package, but they are not a universal end-user fix for a prebuilt release.
If you use a prebuilt Linux package, first perform the simple controlled test: connect the controller before launching KytyPS5, then compare it with a device added after launch. If only the second case fails, provide the package or build source, KytyPS5 version, desktop session, and connection method when requesting help. Installing development packages into a running system may not change an already compiled binary.
If you build KytyPS5 yourself, review the dependency section of the project README and ensure the listed development components are available before configuring the build. A successful compilation alone does not establish that every runtime hotplug path will work; verify it with the before-launch and after-launch comparison.

The evidence does not establish that USB is universally more compatible than Bluetooth, or the reverse. Use the two methods to isolate where a failure occurs.

Change only one variable at a time. If you switch from Bluetooth to USB, update the test notes rather than treating the result as a continuation of the same experiment.
Platform-specific expectations
Windows
Windows is one of KytyPS5’s primary targets. Use the host controller panel to establish that the device and its controls are visible, then launch KytyPS5 with the device already connected for the first test. If relaunching fixes the problem, preserve that observation in your report instead of concluding that all Windows hotplug is broken.
Linux
Linux is also a primary target, but the project documents a specific build-dependency risk for SDL3 gamepad hotplug. Separate a prebuilt package from a self-built binary when troubleshooting because the documented development-package warning applies to the build environment.

macOS
KytyPS5 describes macOS support as experimental. Treat a successful or failed controller test on macOS as build- and version-specific evidence, not as a guarantee for Windows or Linux. Include the macOS version, KytyPS5 build, connection method, and whether the controller was present before launch.
What to include when asking for help
A precise report lets developers distinguish a host connection problem from an SDL or KytyPS5 issue. Include:
- Exact KytyPS5 version or build identifier.
- Operating system and, for Linux, whether KytyPS5 was self-built or installed as a prebuilt package.
- Controller name as displayed by the operating system.
- USB or Bluetooth connection, including whether it was connected before KytyPS5 launched.
- Whether the host input tester showed every relevant button and axis.
- Whether restarting KytyPS5 changed the result.
- The game and menu used for testing, plus which controls worked, failed, or were mapped incorrectly.
- For Linux, whether the failure affects only devices added after launch and any relevant build-dependency details.
The project asks issue reporters to include the tested version because behavior can change between builds. Avoid reporting only that a controller is “unsupported” when the host-level result, launch timing, and exact version have not been recorded.
What you can and cannot conclude
You can conclude that the host operating system recognizes the controller when its input test shows the device and responding controls. You can conclude that a particular KytyPS5 build accepted that controller in a specific game when the same controls work in the game’s menu. You can also identify a repeatable launch-timing pattern by comparing a controller connected before launch with one added afterward.
