You can host a Team Fortress 2 dedicated server on Linux by installing SteamCMD, downloading AppID 232250 into a separate directory, configuring the tf game files, launching the Source server with the correct map and port, and then testing access from your LAN or the Internet. The detailed walkthrough below targets Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS Minimal on amd64. Other Linux distributions use different package names, service conventions, and firewall tools.
Decide how players should connect before installing
A server for computers on the same home network is simpler than an Internet server. Write down which case you need because the setting and network path differ.

There is no evidence-based minimum RAM, bandwidth, player capacity, or hardware specification to quote here. Start with a machine you can administer reliably, then watch CPU, memory, disk, and network use while your intended player count is online.
What you need on Ubuntu Server 24.04
- An amd64 installation of Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS Minimal for the commands in this guide.
- Administrative access through
sudoand enough disk space for the server files, logs, and updates. - A separate, unprivileged Linux account for the game server. Do not run the dedicated server as root.
- SteamCMD and its required 32-bit compatibility libraries. Ubuntu package names and dependency requirements are not universal across Linux distributions.
- A fixed private address or DHCP reservation if players on your LAN will bookmark the server.
The modern Linux walkthrough used here enables the i386 architecture before installing SteamCMD and its libraries. On another distribution, follow that distribution’s SteamCMD packaging instructions rather than copying Ubuntu package names.

1. Prepare the Linux host
Enable 32-bit packages on Ubuntu
SteamCMD and older Source components may need 32-bit libraries even on a 64-bit host. Enable the architecture and refresh package metadata:
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt updateInstall the Ubuntu SteamCMD package and the compatibility libraries and utilities required by your current Ubuntu repositories. The exact dependency list changes with distribution and repository configuration, so confirm the package names with Ubuntu 24.04 documentation or apt search steamcmd rather than treating a list from another Linux release as universal.
Create a restricted service account and directories
Keep server files out of your personal home directory and give the process only the permissions it needs. The following creates an account named tf2 with a home directory at /home/tf2:
sudo adduser --disabled-password --gecos "" tf2
sudo -iu tf2
mkdir -p ~/steamcmd ~/tf2-serverIf your distribution already created a SteamCMD command in a system location, you can use it directly. If you installed a standalone SteamCMD archive, place that executable in ~/steamcmd and make sure it is executable. Check which command is available before continuing:
command -v steamcmd || command -v steamcmd.sh2. Install the TF2 dedicated-server files with SteamCMD
Use an explicit install directory so updates and backups cannot accidentally target your Steam client files. The cited installation guides use anonymous login and the Team Fortress 2 dedicated-server AppID 232250.
From the tf2 account, run the interactive sequence (replace the path only if you deliberately chose another directory):

steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/tf2/tf2-server +login anonymous +app_update 232250 validate +quitvalidate is useful after an interrupted download or suspected corruption; it compares local files with the depot and reacquires files that do not match. It can take a while and may rewrite modified files, so keep custom configuration in the TF2 configuration area and back it up separately.
Confirm the installation layout
Do not assume that every package or build places the launcher in exactly the same location. Inspect the directory before writing a start script:
cd /home/tf2/tf2-server
find . -maxdepth 3 -type f ( -name 'srcds_run' -o -name 'srcds.sh' ) -print
ls -la
ls -la tf 2>/dev/nullA conventional Source Dedicated Server install has a tf directory and a launcher such as srcds_run. A build-specific wrapper may use a different name or require a different working directory. Use the launcher actually present in your installation.

3. Put durable settings in the TF2 configuration directory
Create server.cfg
Persistent server variables belong in the installed game’s configuration directory, normally /home/tf2/tf2-server/tf/cfg. Create the directory if necessary and edit the file as the tf2 user:
cd /home/tf2/tf2-server
mkdir -p tf/cfg
nano tf/cfg/server.cfgUse a small, readable starting configuration. Replace the example hostname and password with your own values:

sv_lan 0For a LAN-only game, change sv_lan 0 to sv_lan 1. The Valve Developer Community command reference describes +sv_lan 1 as restricting a server to the local network. Do not leave a password in a script or public documentation that other people can read.
Define the map cycle
Create tf/mapcycle.txt and put one map name on each line. Start with maps you know are installed, for example:

koth_viaductIf a map fails to load, remove it from the cycle or install the matching map files before restarting. A map name in the cycle is not proof that the corresponding BSP file exists.
Check ownership and permissions
When files were created with sudo, correct ownership so the service account can write logs and configuration:
sudo chown -R tf2:tf2 /home/tf2/tf2-serverRun that command from an administrative shell, not from inside the tf2 account. Avoid making the entire installation world-writable.
4. Launch a first server in the foreground
Test interactively before creating an automatic service. Source Dedicated Server references document options including -console, -game, -port, +map, +maxplayers, and +sv_lan. A typical vanilla TF2 launch, after you have confirmed the actual launcher path, is:

./srcds_run -console -game tf -port 27015 +map ctf_2fort +maxplayers 24 +sv_lan 0If your install exposes srcds.sh instead, use that launcher and keep the same game and server arguments unless its documentation says otherwise. The exact path and wrapper are build-dependent.

The first successful launch should print startup messages, load the selected map, and leave the process running. Stop it with Ctrl+C after testing. If the launcher exits immediately, read the final console lines before changing several variables at once.
Do not copy the Classified-specific wrapper blindly
One current Linux guide demonstrates ./srcds.sh -port 27015 -tf_path ~/tf +map ctf_2fort +sv_password changethis for a Team Fortress 2 Classified server using live TF2 files. That wrapper and -tf_path option are not a universal vanilla TF2 command. For a standard TF2 server, select the launcher and path shown by your own installation, then use the documented Source options.

5. Test local connectivity
From another computer on the same LAN
Find the host’s private address with your distribution’s network tools (for example, ip addr), then start TF2 on another LAN computer. Use the game’s server browser or direct-connect facility with the host’s private address and selected port, such as 192.168.1.20:27015. If sv_lan 1 is enabled, only clients on the same local network should be able to join.
Check the listening socket while the server is running:
ss -luntp | grep 27015A listening socket confirms that a process opened the port on the host; it does not prove that a router or Internet provider will pass traffic to it.
For Internet players
Internet access requires more than setting sv_lan 0. Confirm all of the following:

- The Linux host firewall permits the chosen game traffic.
- The home router forwards the chosen port to the host’s private address, if your network uses a conventional inbound path.
- Your ISP is not placing the connection behind carrier-grade NAT that prevents inbound connections.
- The server is advertising or accepting connections through the networking mode supported by the installed build.
Do not publish your private address. Give friends the public address and port only after testing from a network that is not the same LAN.
Steam Networking and port-forwarding uncertainty
The Valve Developer Community networking reference describes Steam Networking with Steam Datagram Relay as a way for supported games to self-host without traditional port forwarding. It notes support for the Team Fortress 2 branch game family in an update dated February 18, 2025, but the referenced excerpt does not clearly establish that every TF2 dedicated-server configuration uses relay networking automatically. Check the current server’s Steam networking behavior and your host’s requirements before relying on a no-forwarding setup. Conventional hosting still requires the appropriate firewall and forwarding rules where relay networking is not active.

Create an update script
SteamCMD makes updates repeatable. Save a small script as /home/tf2/update-tf2.sh and run it as the tf2 user:

Schedule updates only when you can tolerate a restart; never overwrite a live installation without a recovery plan.
Use a service manager after the foreground test works
For an always-on machine, run the same command through your distribution’s service manager under the tf2 account. The service should set /home/tf2/tf2-server as its working directory, invoke the launcher with -game tf, and restart only after you have reviewed crash logs. Keep the first working command in a text file so a service-unit change cannot silently alter the arguments.
Basic operational safeguards
- Keep the process unprivileged and expose only the game port and any administration interface you intentionally use.
- Use a strong server password for private games and change it if it is shared beyond the intended group.
- Back up configuration and custom maps separately from the SteamCMD installation.
- Monitor free disk space; logs and map downloads can grow even when the game files are unchanged.
- Record the chosen port, private address, launch command, and update date so another administrator can recover the server.
7. Troubleshoot the common failure modes
SteamCMD cannot install or starts with missing-library errors
- Confirm i386 support is enabled on Ubuntu with
dpkg --print-foreign-architectures. - Refresh package metadata and install the SteamCMD compatibility dependencies for your exact distribution release.
- Do not mix package instructions from another distribution or release.
- Run SteamCMD as the unprivileged server account and verify it can write to the chosen install directory.
The server says a file is missing or corrupted
Stop the process and rerun app_update 232250 validate. If the problem persists, check disk space and ownership, then inspect whether a custom file replaced a downloaded file. Keep personal configuration in tf/cfg and restore it after validation rather than modifying depot files.
The launcher command is not found
Use find to locate srcds_run or srcds.sh, then run the command from the directory that contains the launcher. A guide for another TF2 branch may show a different wrapper or path; do not add flags such as -tf_path unless your installed build documents them.
The process starts, then exits while loading a map
- Confirm the map name is spelled correctly and exists in the installation.
- Launch with one known-good map instead of the full map cycle.
- Read the final console error and correct one setting at a time.
- Run the launcher from the server directory so relative paths resolve correctly.
LAN players cannot connect
- Check that the client and server are actually on the same routed LAN or VLAN.
- Use the host’s private address, not its public address.
- Check the host firewall and confirm the process is listening on the selected port.
- Use
sv_lan 1only when LAN-only access is intended; a mismatch can make the server appear in the wrong browser scope.
Internet players cannot connect
- Test from a genuinely external network, not from a device on the same home router.
- Verify the router forwards the same port passed to
-portand that the host’s private address has not changed. - Check for carrier-grade NAT or an upstream firewall.
- Confirm whether the current TF2 build is using Steam Networking relay support or requires conventional inbound access.
- Recheck the Linux firewall after every port change.
Players are kicked for a password they do not know
Inspect tf/cfg/server.cfg for sv_password, check for a command-line override, and restart after changing the value. A password in a configuration file takes effect only when that configuration is loaded; do not assume editing it during a running session changed the active value.
When a managed Linux host is the better choice
Self-hosting is appropriate when you already have an always-on machine, control of the network, and time to handle updates and troubleshooting. A hosted VPS or managed game-server service removes much of the home-network work, but it does not remove the need to understand SteamCMD, configuration, passwords, backups, or updates. Provider documentation can demonstrate an installation flow, but it is not independent evidence of capacity, reliability, pricing, or support quality. Before choosing one, verify current TF2 availability, the permitted player count, CPU and memory limits, geographic region, backup policy, update mechanism, console access, and cancellation terms.
