Connect Hermes Agent to Telegram by creating a bot with @BotFather, collecting your numeric Telegram user ID, and configuring both values in Hermes. The documented route is hermes gateway setup; you can also edit ~/.hermes/.env manually. Test with hermes gateway before installing a background service, and keep the bot restricted with TELEGRAM_ALLOWED_USERS.
What you need before starting
- A working Hermes Agent installation with the
hermescommand available in your shell. - A Telegram account and access to the official @BotFather account.
- Your numeric Telegram user ID. Hermes uses this number for access control, not your changeable
@username. - A terminal on the machine where the Hermes gateway will run.
The setup creates a Telegram bot identity and then authorizes specific human Telegram accounts to use your Hermes gateway. A bot token identifies the bot; it does not identify or trust the person sending a message, so the user allowlist is a separate, required control.

1. Open BotFather
In Telegram, search for @BotFather and open the account with Telegram’s verified bot profile. Start a chat and send:
/newbot
2. Choose a display name
When BotFather asks for a name, enter the human-readable display name you want people to see in Telegram. This name does not have to be globally unique.

3. Choose a unique username
BotFather next requests a username. It must be unique on Telegram and end with bot (for example, a name ending in _bot or Bot). If the username is already taken, choose another one and submit it again.
4. Save the API token securely
BotFather returns an API token containing a number, a colon, and a random string. Copy it exactly and store it as a secret. Anyone who obtains the token can operate the bot through Telegram’s bot API, so do not paste it into a public issue, screen recording, or shared configuration.
You can finish the Telegram-side setup at this point. Hermes needs the token and your numeric user ID before it can accept messages.
Find your numeric Telegram user ID
Use @userinfobot
Search Telegram for @userinfobot, open the bot, and send a message as prompted. It replies with account information that includes your numeric user ID.
Copy the number, not the value beginning with @. Telegram usernames can be changed; the numeric ID is the stable identifier Hermes uses in its allowlist. If you are configuring access for more than one person, obtain each person’s numeric ID and keep the list documented privately.
Configure Hermes with the setup wizard
The recommended Hermes path is the interactive gateway setup wizard. From the terminal on the Hermes host, run:

hermes gateway setup
- Choose Telegram when the wizard asks which channel to configure.
- Paste the BotFather token exactly as issued.
- Enter the numeric Telegram user ID or IDs that should be allowed to use the agent.
- Complete the prompts so the wizard writes the profile configuration.
The wizard creates the required Telegram settings for the active Hermes profile. Because it writes the configuration for you, it is the least error-prone route for a first installation. Treat the terminal session and any generated environment file as sensitive while you are entering the token.
Configure Hermes manually in ~/.hermes/.env
Manual configuration is useful when you manage profiles with scripts or need to edit an existing environment file directly. Add these variables to the Hermes profile environment file:
TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN=your_bot_token
TELEGRAM_ALLOWED_USERS=your_numeric_user_id
Replace the example values with the token from BotFather and the number returned by @userinfobot. Do not include the @ symbol around the user ID.
Allow several users
Separate multiple numeric IDs with commas:
TELEGRAM_ALLOWED_USERS=123456789,987654321
Keep the list limited to people who genuinely need access. A valid bot token authenticates the bot itself; it does not replace this sender allowlist.
Check the profile you are editing
Hermes profiles have separate environment and gateway processes. Make sure ~/.hermes/.env belongs to the profile whose gateway you intend to start. If you operate several profiles, each one needs its own Telegram bot and its own gateway process; do not point two running gateways at the same bot token.

Test the connection in the foreground
Before creating a persistent service, run the gateway interactively:
hermes gateway
- Leave the terminal running.
- Open Telegram and send a message to the bot you created.
- Confirm that the Hermes agent receives and handles the message.
- When the test is complete, return to the terminal and press
Ctrl+Cto stop the foreground gateway.
Foreground testing isolates configuration problems from service-manager problems. If the bot does not respond, keep this terminal visible while you check the token, user ID, profile, and allowlist rather than installing a background service immediately.

Install Hermes as a persistent service
After a successful foreground test, install the gateway so it can run in the background:
hermes gateway install
The default service type depends on the operating system:

Use the system-wide variant only when that operating model matches your deployment and you understand the additional service permissions. The important order is: configure, test in the foreground, then install.

Hermes also provides a QR-based setup in its dashboard and desktop app. That flow creates the Telegram bot, detects your user ID, writes TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN and TELEGRAM_ALLOWED_USERS to the profile’s .env file, and restarts the gateway.

This route is convenient when you prefer a graphical setup instead of terminal prompts. After scanning and completing the flow, send a test message from the authorized Telegram account so you verify that the restarted gateway is using the expected profile.
Optional webhook mode
The standard setup can run without a webhook. If you deliberately use webhook delivery, Hermes expects a webhook URL and a secret:
TELEGRAM_WEBHOOK_URL=...TELEGRAM_WEBHOOK_SECRET=...

TELEGRAM_WEBHOOK_SECRET is required in webhook mode. Keep the secret private and configure the URL so it reaches the Hermes gateway endpoint used by your deployment. The available excerpts do not establish additional reverse-proxy, TLS, or container settings, so follow the current Hermes documentation for those deployment-specific details rather than copying assumptions from a polling setup.
Security practices that matter
Protect and rotate the bot token
Handle the token like a password. Avoid committing it to source control, embedding it in screenshots, or sharing it in chat. If it is exposed, open BotFather and send /revoke to invalidate the compromised token and receive a replacement. Update the Hermes profile with the new value before restarting the gateway.
Keep the allowlist enabled
Do not treat possession of the bot’s chat link as authorization. The allowlist restricts which numeric Telegram accounts Hermes will accept. Enter only the IDs that should control this agent, and review the list whenever a person no longer needs access.

Separate profiles and bots
Each running Hermes profile should have one dedicated Telegram bot token. Create one bot per profile and start one gateway per profile. Reusing a token across simultaneously running gateways can send updates to the wrong process or create competing consumers, so keep the mapping one-to-one.

Troubleshoot a bot that does not respond
The gateway starts but Telegram messages are ignored
- Confirm that the message is being sent to the same bot whose token is in the active profile.
- Check that your numeric user ID is present in
TELEGRAM_ALLOWED_USERS, with no@prefix. - If you changed
.envmanually, stop and restart the gateway so it reads the new values. - Run
hermes gatewayin the foreground and send a new message while watching the terminal output.
BotFather rejects the username
The username must be globally unique and end in bot. Choose a different ending or spelling and submit it again; the display name can remain unchanged.
The token no longer works
Use BotFather’s /revoke command to issue a replacement, then update TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN in the correct profile. Retest in the foreground before reinstalling or restarting the service.
One profile works and another does not
Check the profile-to-bot mapping. Every profile needs its own token, environment values, authorized user IDs, and gateway process. A token copied from one profile into another can make you test the wrong bot or leave one gateway without a valid Telegram identity.
The foreground test succeeds but the installed service fails
Verify that the service was installed for the same user and profile used during the interactive test. Recheck the environment file path and token, then run the foreground command again. On Linux, determine whether you installed the default user service or intentionally selected hermes gateway install --system; those are different service scopes.
