A paper-like reading setup comes from several small changes rather than one magic filter: set brightness to match the room, enlarge text until you can read at your normal distance, choose a color temperature and theme you actually find legible, and remove reflections. On an iPad, begin in Settings > Display & Brightness and Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. On a Pixel Tablet, use Quick Settings for brightness and the display and accessibility controls for text, bold type, adaptive brightness, adaptive tone, and Night Light.
Use the steps below in the room where you read most. Comfort is personal and changes with lighting, eyesight, reading distance, app design, and tablet model, so compare settings rather than assuming a particular slider position or color mode is best for everyone.
What “paper-like” reading means on a tablet
Paper does not have a backlight, does not reflect a ceiling lamp in the same way a glossy screen does, and usually presents familiar text at a stable size. A tablet can approximate that experience by making text easy to resolve, matching luminance to the surroundings, and reducing reflections. It cannot turn an LCD or OLED panel into electronic paper, and a warm tint or dark theme is not a treatment for eye disease.
Think of the setup as four targets:
- Legibility: letters are clear at your normal reading distance without leaning forward.
- Visual balance: the screen is neither a bright lamp in a dark room nor too dim to read in daylight.
- Low distraction: reflections, notifications, and unnecessary interface elements do not compete with the page.
- Sustainable habits: your posture, viewing distance, and break pattern remain comfortable during longer sessions.
Change one variable at a time and read a representative page for several minutes. A setting that looks attractive on a menu screen may be tiring when you read dense paragraphs, footnotes, or comics.

Start with a five-minute setup
- Place the tablet where you normally read, not under a different lamp or beside a window you will not use later.
- Adjust brightness until the page looks balanced with the room. Recheck it when you move between a bright room, a dim room, and outdoor shade.
- Increase text size and, if needed, enable bold text. Stop when you can read without moving your head toward the screen.
- Compare neutral color, a warmer mode, and (if your tablet offers it) an ambient-adaptive mode.
- Compare a light page and a dark page in the reading app you use most.
- Tilt or move the tablet to remove reflections before buying an accessory.
- Set a comfortable viewing angle and take regular distance breaks.
1. Set brightness for the room
iPad
Open Settings > Display & Brightness and move the Brightness slider while looking at a normal page of text. Apple also documents automatic brightness under Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. Automatic adjustment can be useful when the surrounding light changes, but check the result: a sensor can choose a level that feels too bright or too dim for your eyes.
Pixel Tablet
Swipe down to open Quick Settings and adjust the brightness slider. Pixel Tablet also offers adaptive brightness in its display settings. Let the automatic setting respond when you change rooms, then make a manual correction if the page is still glaring or difficult to read.
Use a room-based test
There is no correct percentage that works everywhere. In a dim room, a high setting can make the tablet feel like a light source; in daylight, the same setting can leave text washed out. Read a paragraph, look away at a nearby object, and return to the page. If the transition feels harsh, adjust the tablet or the room lighting rather than forcing your eyes to adapt.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Bright room or window nearby: move away from direct reflections and raise brightness only enough to preserve contrast.
- Dim evening room: reduce brightness and add soft, indirect ambient light if the tablet becomes the only bright object.
- Outdoor shade: raise brightness as needed, but keep the screen out of direct sun when possible because reflections can overwhelm contrast.
2. Make text comfortably legible
Change system text controls first
On iPad, use Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size for larger text and related display options. Pixel Tablet provides display-size and text controls, including bold text. Names and availability can vary with the model and software version.
Increase text until a typical line is easy to scan at your normal distance. Do not choose a size by comparing it with someone else’s tablet: eyesight, screen dimensions, viewing distance, and the app’s typography all change the result. If a very large setting causes awkward line breaks or hides controls, step down one level and use the reading app’s own font-size control.
Use the reading app’s page controls
Many book, document, and news apps provide independent controls for font family, size, line spacing, margins, column width, and justification. A simple sans-serif or humanist serif can be easier for you than the default; neither category is universally superior. Increase line spacing if lines run together, and widen margins if the page feels visually crowded. For PDFs, use reflow or a zoom level that keeps a complete line visible instead of repeatedly panning sideways.

Check text against the hardest material
Test a page containing italics, punctuation, small captions, or a long paragraph. If those elements disappear into the background, improve contrast or size rather than relying on a warmer tint. Bold text can help thin strokes stand out, but excessive weight may make letters blur together on some displays.

3. Choose color temperature and display appearance
Warm modes and ambient adaptation
Supported iPads can use True Tone, which adapts display color to ambient lighting. iPad Night Shift can be scheduled or turned on manually to shift the colors in your display to the warmer end of the spectrum at night
. Pixel Tablet offers adaptive tone and Night Light, which applies an amber tint.
These controls alter appearance. Try them with the same page and brightness, then keep the option that leaves text looking natural and easy to focus on. A strong amber cast can make white backgrounds look orange or reduce your ability to judge colors in illustrated books, manuals, and photographs. If you read color-critical material, turn the tint down or off for that session.
Blue-light claims in context
The American Academy of Ophthalmology states: Digital eye discomfort is not caused by blue light.
It does not recommend blue-light-blocking glasses for digital eye strain because evidence that blue light damages the eyes is lacking. Use Night Shift or Night Light as a comfort or bedtime preference, not as a promise to prevent eye harm.
4. Compare light and dark reading themes
iPad supports Dark Mode and scheduling. Many reading apps also offer their own light, dark, sepia, or black-background themes. Enable a theme in the app you actually use, then read several pages in the lighting where you normally sit.
Recommended Free Tools
| Theme | May feel better when | Check for |
|---|---|---|
| Light background | The room is bright and you want a familiar printed-page appearance. | Excessive brightness or reflections in a dim room. |
| Dark or black background | You read in low ambient light and prefer less bright page area. | Gray text, thin type, halos, or reduced readability in a bright room. |
| Sepia or tinted background | You prefer lower perceived contrast than stark white. | Color casts that make diagrams, photos, or colored links hard to interpret. |
There is no universal winner. The best choice is the one that keeps characters distinct at your chosen size and does not make you squint. If an app’s dark mode uses low-contrast gray text, its light mode with lower brightness may be more comfortable.

5. Remove glare before buying a filter
Change position and lighting first
Look for the reflection of a lamp or window on the inactive part of the screen. Move the lamp, turn the tablet a few degrees, or change your seat so the reflected source is not behind the text. Dimming lighting near the screen can also reduce contrast loss. Keep a soft room light on for evening reading rather than placing a bright fixture directly behind or above the tablet.
Optional matte protection
The American Academy of Ophthalmology says: To reduce glare, consider a matte screen filter for your device.
A matte anti-glare screen protector is optional; it is not a treatment for eye strain or a guarantee of eye protection. Matte surfaces can slightly soften fine detail, alter colors, add texture, or change how a stylus feels.
If you compare filters, match the exact tablet model, generation, and screen size. Check whether the listing covers the camera and sensors, how it handles installation, its return terms, and whether the manufacturer describes a change in optical clarity. No filter has a universal fit, so do not assume that two tablets with similar diagonal measurements use the same protector.

Hold the tablet at a sustainable angle
Support the tablet so you are not gripping it tightly or bending your neck for the entire session. Keep the screen at a distance where the chosen text size is clear without leaning in. An adjustable stand can be useful for maintaining an angle, but it is an optional convenience rather than a requirement.
The American Optometric Association identifies lighting and glare control, appropriate viewing distance and posture, and correction of vision problems as relevant to reducing digital eye-strain symptoms. If you normally need reading glasses, use the prescription that lets you focus at the tablet’s distance; changing display settings cannot correct uncorrected vision.
Use regular visual breaks
The American Academy of Ophthalmology describes the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. A timer, a chapter-end habit, or a short stretch can make the break routine easier to maintain. Blinking normally and varying your focus are useful during long sessions; do not wait until your eyes feel sore before looking away.

Persistent pain, headaches, double vision, unusual blur, or symptoms that continue away from screens warrant advice from an eye-care professional. A display mode should not replace an examination.

Books and long-form text
- Choose a font size that keeps paragraphs readable without excessive page turns.
- Adjust line spacing until adjacent lines do not merge visually.
- Use moderate margins; very narrow columns create frequent eye movements, while very wide margins waste space.
- Hide progress bars, toolbars, and animations when the app allows it.
- Download the book for offline reading if connection prompts or pop-ups interrupt concentration.
PDFs and scanned documents
Prefer a reflow or accessibility mode when available. If the document is a fixed scan, zoom until text is clear and rotate to landscape for wide pages. Avoid a zoom level that requires constant horizontal panning: the repeated movement is often more tiring than a slightly smaller but complete line.
Web articles
Use the browser’s reader view when it removes advertisements, sidebars, and moving elements without hiding essential figures. Increase text size in the page or browser settings, and keep link colors distinguishable from body text. If a site’s own dark theme produces poor contrast, use the browser’s light reader view at a lower brightness instead.

“The screen feels painfully bright.”
- Lower brightness while looking at a text page, not a dark settings screen.
- Turn off or soften a strong white theme and compare a warmer or dark page.
- Reduce nearby lamp output and remove direct reflections.
- If the room is very dark, add soft indirect light so the tablet is not the only bright surface.
“Text is blurry or I keep leaning closer.”
- Increase system text size or display size.
- Enable bold text and test a different font in the app.
- Increase line spacing and use reflow for PDFs.
- Check your viewing distance and reading-vision correction.
“Dark Mode is harder to read.”
Return to a light or sepia page, lower its brightness, and compare contrast. Some apps use gray-on-black text that looks subdued but lacks the crisp edges you need. Keep the theme that produces clear characters, regardless of the label.
“A warm tint makes everything look strange.”
Reduce the Night Shift or Night Light intensity, disable it for color-sensitive material, or use neutral color with lower brightness. Warmth is optional; legibility takes priority.

“Glare remains after changing brightness.”
Brightness cannot remove a reflected window. Change the tablet’s angle and the lamp position first. If reflections still interrupt reading, consider a model-specific matte filter and verify its return policy.
How to judge whether your setup is working
After making changes, read for 15 to 20 minutes using ordinary material. Rate four things from your own experience: whether text is legible at your normal distance, whether you prefer warm or neutral color, whether light or dark background works in that room, and how much glare remains before and after moving the tablet. Repeat the comparison on another day or in another room; a setting that works at night may be wrong in daylight.
Keep the configuration that lets you read without squinting, leaning forward, or repeatedly changing the angle. Revisit brightness whenever the environment changes, and revisit text size if you change reading glasses, apps, or devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat these settings can—and cannot—do for your eyes
Brightness, text size, contrast, glare control, posture, and breaks can make reading more comfortable. They do not diagnose or prevent every cause of eye discomfort. The eye-health guidance from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Optometric Association emphasizes practical ergonomics and regular breaks, while the Academy specifically rejects the idea that blue light is the cause of digital eye discomfort.
If discomfort is frequent, severe, or present when you are not using a screen, seek professional eye care. A comfortable tablet setup is a useful part of a reading routine, not a substitute for correcting vision problems or evaluating persistent symptoms.
