The fastest route to reliable Steam Machine performance is to start with one directly connected display, a usable controller or keyboard and mouse, a completed network and Steam sign-in, and all available system, hardware, and controller updates. Leave the system at its 1080p game-resolution default first; then adjust resolution, HDR, and per-game options while checking the titles you actually play.
What you need before turning on the Steam Machine
Prepare the basic connections before starting the first-run wizard. Steam Machine is designed for a single display in Gaming Mode, so choose the TV or monitor you intend to use and connect it directly for the initial test.
- Display: A TV or monitor with HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4. HDMI is the default Gaming Mode output when HDMI is connected; DisplayPort can be used as the sole output.
- Input device: A Steam Controller, another compatible gamepad, or a mouse and keyboard. Valve requires a usable input device during setup.
- Network: Access to Wi-Fi or a router/switch with Ethernet. The machine includes 2×2 Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and Gigabit Ethernet.
- Steam account: Your Steam credentials and any sign-in verification method your account uses.
- Power and a clear troubleshooting path: For first testing, avoid routing the video signal through a dock, AV receiver, soundbar, switch, or adapter.
If you must convert DisplayPort to HDMI, use an active adapter or active cable. Valve lists passive DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters as unsupported.

Connect one display
Attach the Steam Machine directly to the chosen display with HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4, then select the matching input on the TV or monitor. Use only one display while setting up Gaming Mode. Connecting through additional equipment can introduce handshake, resolution, or audio problems that are difficult to diagnose during the first boot.

Connect an input device
For a Steam Controller, use the USB connection during the initial flow, which is the setup route Valve describes. A third-party gamepad can also be connected by USB. After setup, a compatible third-party controller may be paired over Bluetooth. A mouse and keyboard can serve as the input device if that is more practical for your configuration.

Join your network
Follow the on-screen network prompts. Wi-Fi 6E is available where your router and local regulatory conditions support it; otherwise, use a compatible Wi-Fi band or connect the Gigabit Ethernet port to your router or switch. Network choice affects download reliability and remote features, not the machine’s rendering capability.

Sign in to Steam
Complete the Steam sign-in prompts and any account verification. The first-run wizard is intended to guide controller connection, network access, and Steam login in sequence. Do not begin performance tuning until you can reach the Steam interface and launch a game.

Allow the initial setup to finish
Keep the machine connected to power and the network while it completes its first-run tasks. If a controller or display is not detected, stop and correct that connection before adding hubs, switches, receivers, or other peripherals.
Install every relevant update before tuning graphics
Updates can change device compatibility and fix issues that look like poor game performance. Check all three update areas rather than assuming a SteamOS update also updates every accessory.

- Open Settings > System > Software Updates and install available SteamOS updates.
- Open Settings > System > Hardware Updates and install available Machine hardware updates.
- Open Settings > Controller and check updates for the Steam Controller, puck, and wireless adapter when those devices are present.
- Restart the Steam Machine and any affected controller, adapter, or display after updating. Re-test the connection before changing game settings.
If an update appears stuck, leave the machine connected to the network, restart once, and check the same menu again. During troubleshooting, disconnect unnecessary USB devices and wireless receivers so that only the required display, input device, network connection, and power remain.
Use 1080p as the performance baseline
Steam Machine starts games at 1080p. Valve describes 1080p as the default intended to provide a good out-of-the-box gameplay experience, and it is the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing. This is a baseline, not a promise that every game will use identical settings or reach a particular frame rate.
Start a representative game at the default resolution before changing anything. Choose a title that reflects how you normally play: a demanding 3D game, a competitive game where responsiveness matters, or a less demanding independent game. Observe loading, menu behavior, image stability, and gameplay before making a single change. Individual games can apply their own defaults, so performance from one title cannot establish a universal result.
When to raise output resolution
If 1080p looks soft on a high-resolution display and the game has performance headroom, raise resolution globally through Settings > Display or in that game’s video settings. Change one game at a time and check that title after each change. A higher output resolution requires more rendering work and can reduce performance; the effect depends on the game’s engine, its selected quality options, and the display mode.
Valve’s product specifications describe port capabilities of up to 4K at 120 Hz over HDMI 2.0, up to 4K at 240 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz over DisplayPort 1.4. Those are output-interface limits, not a guarantee that demanding games render at those resolutions or refresh rates with a preferred frame rate. Treat the 1080p default as the known starting point and evaluate higher settings empirically in each game.

Choose the right display connection
Use HDMI when the TV is your primary screen or when its supported mode is available only through HDMI. Use DisplayPort when the monitor requires it or when you need a DisplayPort-supported refresh mode. Gaming Mode currently supports only one display at a time, even though the machine has more than one video output.

For a clean diagnostic test, connect the machine straight to the display with a known-good cable. Once the picture is stable, add a receiver, soundbar, switch, dock, or adapter one component at a time. If the image disappears after adding a component, return to the direct connection to identify whether the extra device is responsible.
Display connection symptoms and fixes
- No signal: Confirm the display input, reseat both cable ends, power-cycle the display and Steam Machine, and test a direct connection without intermediary equipment.
- Wrong refresh rate or resolution: Check the display’s supported modes and the selected Steam Machine output. Test the 1080p baseline before selecting a higher mode.
- DisplayPort-to-HDMI failure: Replace a passive adapter with an active adapter or active cable, which is the supported conversion type.
- Intermittent black screen: Remove switches and receivers temporarily, test another cable if available, and reintroduce equipment only after the direct path is reliable.
Configure HDR and picture quality without creating a mismatch
Picture quality is controlled by three layers: Steam Machine display options, the TV or monitor’s input settings, and the game’s own video and HDR controls. There is no single combination that is best for every display.
Steam Machine display options
Steam Machine’s advanced display options include HDR, SDR brightness, color temperature, and RGB output range. Change these only after the basic 1080p picture is working. Record the original values so you can return to them if an adjustment makes the image worse.
Match the RGB range and black level
The machine’s RGB output range and the display’s black-level or HDMI-range setting must agree. A mismatch commonly appears as crushed shadow detail, gray-looking blacks, or clipped highlights. Set the corresponding range on both ends according to the display’s documented naming, then inspect a dark scene and a bright scene in a game. Avoid changing several color controls at once; otherwise you will not know which setting caused the result.

Use the game’s HDR calibration
When a game provides HDR calibration, use it after enabling HDR on the machine and display. The game’s calibration screen is the appropriate place to set paper white, peak brightness, or black-level targets when those controls are offered. If HDR looks worse than SDR, compare both modes in the same scene and return to SDR while you verify the display’s HDMI format, color depth, range, and image-processing settings.
Disable unwanted display processing
Televisions may apply motion smoothing, noise reduction, dynamic contrast, or other processing to an HDMI input. These controls vary by model and are not universal Steam Machine settings. Use the display’s game-oriented picture mode if it is available, but confirm the resulting image and input behavior rather than assuming its label guarantees a particular result.
Set up networking for dependable downloads and play
Steam Machine includes Gigabit Ethernet and 2×2 Wi-Fi 6E. Choose the connection that is stable in your room and practical for your router. Ethernet is useful when wireless signal quality is poor, when large game downloads are interrupted, or when you want a fixed connection to the router or switch.
A wired cable does not upgrade the graphics processor and does not promise higher rendering frame rates. Its benefits are network consistency, potentially steadier downloads, and fewer wireless interference problems. If Wi-Fi is unreliable, first move the machine or access point, reduce obstructions, select an appropriate band, or connect Ethernet where practical.

Network troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm that other devices can reach the internet through the same router.
- Restart the router and Steam Machine if the connection repeatedly drops.
- Check the Steam Machine’s network status and reconnect to the intended wireless network if necessary.
- Test Ethernet directly to the router or switch when Wi-Fi remains unstable.
- After the connection is stable, retry the download or online game before changing display settings.
Valve maintains network troubleshooting guidance for cases that persist after these basic checks. A network fault should be treated separately from a rendering or frame-rate problem.

Optimize individual games methodically
Because performance varies by game and its defaults, use a repeatable process instead of applying one global preset to every title.
- Establish the baseline: Run the game at 1080p with its current defaults and note whether the problem is low frame rate, stutter, input delay, image quality, or network behavior.
- Change one variable: Adjust resolution or one major graphics option, then repeat the same scene or activity.
- Prioritize the visible bottleneck: If the image is too soft, test a higher resolution. If motion is uneven, return to the prior resolution and reduce the game’s most demanding quality options.
- Check menus and gameplay: Some games behave well in menus but become demanding during combat or large outdoor scenes. Judge the setting where you actually play.
- Keep a working profile: Once a title is satisfactory, stop changing settings unless a game update, SteamOS update, or display change alters the result.
Do not infer a universal frame-rate target from the machine’s specifications or from the phrase “over six times the horsepower of Steam Deck” on the product page. That marketing comparison is not an independent benchmark and does not establish a predicted frame rate for a particular game.
Understand the hardware when choosing settings

The game is slow immediately after setup
- Verify that SteamOS, hardware, and controller updates are installed.
- Return the game to the 1080p baseline.
- Check whether the issue occurs in one title or several. A single-title problem belongs primarily in that game’s settings; a system-wide issue warrants connection and update checks.
- Remove unnecessary peripherals and restart before testing again.
The picture is washed out, too dark, or missing highlights
- Check HDR state on the machine and display.
- Match RGB output range with the display’s HDMI range or black-level setting.
- Use the game’s HDR calibration if available.
- Temporarily compare SDR and HDR in the same scene to isolate the source.
The controller does not respond
- Reconnect the Steam Controller by USB during initial setup.
- For a third-party gamepad, test USB first, then pair Bluetooth after setup.
- Open Settings > Controller and install any controller, puck, or wireless-adapter update.
- Restart the controller and Steam Machine, then test with unnecessary receivers disconnected.
Downloads fail or online play disconnects
- Confirm the network works on another device.
- Restart the router and Steam Machine.
- Try Gigabit Ethernet directly to the router or switch if Wi-Fi remains unreliable.
- Do not treat the network symptom as evidence of a graphics-performance limit.
A practical best-performance checklist
- One TV or monitor connected directly by HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4.
- Active DisplayPort-to-HDMI conversion if conversion is unavoidable.
- Controller connected by USB for the initial flow, or mouse and keyboard ready.
- Network connected and Steam sign-in completed.
- SteamOS, hardware, and accessory updates installed from their respective menus.
- 1080p retained as the first game-resolution test.
- Resolution and graphics changes made per game, one variable at a time.
- HDR, RGB range, black level, and display processing checked as a matched system.
- Ethernet used for stability when Wi-Fi is unreliable, not as a frame-rate upgrade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Steam Machine run every game at 4K?
No universal 4K performance guarantee is established. HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 list high output capabilities, but demanding games may require lower resolution or different per-game settings. Start at 1080p and evaluate each title.
Does an Ethernet cable increase FPS?
No. Ethernet can improve network consistency and download reliability, but it does not increase the machine’s rendering performance.
Can I use two monitors in Gaming Mode?
