Steam Frame is a standalone SteamOS VR headset that can stream your Steam library from a PC, including SteamVR games. The reliable setup is: power and update the headset, update Steam and SteamVR on the computer, connect Valve’s included wireless adapter to a USB 3 port, pair the headset with the code shown in the headset, and launch games with Stream from the headset library. SteamVR runs on the host computer; you do not install the PC SteamVR runtime as a separate headset app.
What you need before starting
Have these items ready before turning on the headset:
- A Steam Frame headset and its controllers.
- A power adapter rated for at least 27 W. Valve recommends a 45 W adapter for setup and use.
- A Windows or Linux PC with the desktop Steam client and SteamVR installed.
- The included dedicated wireless adapter and an available USB 3 port on the PC. A USB 3 extension cable can help position the adapter where it has a clearer link to the headset.
- A local network connection for the headset’s initial sign-in, updates and downloads.
- The same Steam account signed in on the headset and the host computer.
Steam Frame also supports standalone VR, non-VR experiences, OpenXR, Windows and Linux PC titles, native ARM64 software and Android APKs. Its standalone specification includes 16 GB of RAM, but PC VR performance is determined mainly by the host computer, the game and the wireless connection. The headset therefore does not turn a low-capability PC into a faster VR system; it streams what the computer can run.
Before troubleshooting, decide which connection you intend to test first. Valve’s setup path uses the included dedicated adapter. Home Wi-Fi is an alternative, but it shares the network with other traffic and can be more congested. Starting with the adapter gives you a known connection path and makes it easier to determine whether a problem is caused by the host software or by the household network.

Understand what runs on the headset and what runs on the PC
In a PC VR session, the computer remains the host. The desktop Steam client manages the library, SteamVR provides the PC VR runtime, and the game renders on the computer. Steam Frame receives the wireless stream and sends headset and controller input back to the host.
This is why you do not look for a standalone PC SteamVR installation inside the headset. After pairing, SteamVR starts on the computer when you select the computer from the headset’s VR dashboard. Valve supports launching SteamVR directly from the PC, but describes that route as primarily useful for development; for ordinary play, start a game with Stream in the headset’s Steam library.
Standalone software is a separate use case. Steam Frame can run supported native ARM64 software, Android APKs, and standalone VR or non-VR experiences without streaming from a computer. Those capabilities do not remove the need for the desktop Steam client and SteamVR when you want to play a Windows or Linux PC VR title.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Complete the first boot and headset update
- Connect power. Steam Frame ships in a special mode that requires external power for the first boot. Use a 27 W-or-higher adapter; 45 W is Valve’s recommendation.
- Turn on the headset. Press the power button and follow the in-headset setup screens.
- Install the initial update. Allow the headset to download and install its update. It will reboot when the update is complete; do not interrupt that restart.
- Sign in to Steam. Complete account sign-in in the headset after it returns to the setup flow.
- Join your local network. The first setup needs a local network connection to authenticate the account and download updates. Keep the headset connected until those tasks finish.
If the headset does not start, check the adapter rating and confirm that the power connection is secure. A lower-power adapter may not satisfy the first-boot requirement. If an update appears to pause, leave the headset powered and connected to the network long enough for the reboot stage rather than repeatedly interrupting it.
The local-network step is required even if you intend to use the dedicated adapter for later PC sessions. It is used for sign-in and downloads; the adapter is the later PC-streaming link.
Install every Steam Frame, Steam and SteamVR update
Valve’s current setup guidance recommends the beta branches on all three components so that the headset, desktop client and SteamVR use the latest compatible changes. Beta software can change more frequently than the default branch, so use the same choice consistently when troubleshooting. A version mismatch can make a pairing issue look like a hardware fault.
Update Steam Frame
- Open Steam Settings in the headset.
- Choose System.
- Open System Update Channel.
- Select Beta, then install any offered update and restart if prompted.
Update the desktop Steam client
- Open Steam on the host PC.
- Go to Steam Settings > Interface.
- Under Client Beta Participation, select Steam Beta Update.
- Allow Steam to restart and finish installing the client update.
Update SteamVR
- In the desktop Steam client, open the Library.
- Find SteamVR, open its gear menu and choose Properties.
- Open Betas.
- Select SteamVR Beta Update, then let Steam download the update.
Restarting after updates matters because the wireless driver and SteamVR services may not be loaded until the desktop client or the PC starts again. If you change a beta setting, allow Steam to complete its restart before opening SteamVR or beginning pairing.

Connect and pair the dedicated wireless adapter
The included adapter is Valve’s preferred PC link. It creates a direct wireless connection rather than sharing the traffic conditions of your household Wi-Fi.
- Plug in the adapter. Connect it to a USB 3 port on the host PC. A direct USB 3 connection is preferred; avoid treating a USB 2 port as equivalent.
- Position it sensibly. If the PC’s ports are behind a desk or blocked by other equipment, a USB 3 extension cable can place the included adapter in a more suitable position near the play area. The extension is optional; it does not replace the adapter or the required driver.
- Start SteamVR. Launch SteamVR on the PC after the adapter is connected.
- Install the driver. Accept SteamVR’s prompt to install the wireless-adapter driver. If no prompt appears, use the troubleshooting steps below before trying to pair repeatedly.
- Choose Pair. In the pairing flow, select Pair.
- Enter the headset code. The headset displays a code and provides a virtual keyboard. Enter that code in the desktop pairing prompt and confirm.
- Wait for the connection. Keep SteamVR open while the pairing completes. The headset and PC should then appear as available devices in the VR environment.
Pairing is a one-time association for normal use. If you move the adapter to another USB port, reinstall SteamVR or change the host computer, SteamVR may ask to install its driver or pair again. A USB connection by itself is not enough: the driver prompt must be accepted and the headset code must be entered.
Start a PC VR session and stream a game
Use the recommended headset workflow
- Put on Steam Frame and open the VR dashboard.
- Open the Steam menu.
- Select the name of the paired PC.
- Wait for SteamVR to launch on the host computer.
- Open the Steam library in the headset, select a compatible game and choose Stream.
The game runs on the PC while its video and audio are sent to the headset. The host PC must remain powered on, signed in to the same Steam account and able to launch the game. If the computer name is not shown, the adapter, SteamVR driver or account pairing has not completed successfully.
Use the library entry on the headset as the normal starting point. A title that supports SteamVR or OpenXR can use the PC VR path; a non-VR title can still be streamed as a non-VR experience when Steam presents it as available. In either case, the computer is doing the rendering and the headset is the display and input endpoint.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Directly launching SteamVR from the PC
You can start SteamVR from the desktop Steam client, and Valve supports that path. Valve characterizes direct desktop launching mainly as a development workflow, so the headset’s Steam dashboard followed by Stream is the better choice for routine play. If you do launch from the desktop, keep the headset paired and connected before starting a game so SteamVR can discover the intended device.
Pair the Steam Frame controllers
Controllers normally pair automatically when they are turned on. Use manual pairing only when a controller does not appear or input is missing.
- In the headset, open VR Settings > Controllers > Pair Controllers.
- On one controller, hold the Steam button and the thin top View/Menu button together.
- Keep holding until the controller beeps.
- Select Pair in the headset interface.
- Repeat the procedure for the second controller.
If a controller still does not pair, turn it off and on, restart the headset and host SteamVR, then repeat the documented pairing sequence. Pairing the headset and pairing each controller are separate steps; a successful PC connection does not guarantee that a controller which was powered off will immediately appear.

Choose between the dedicated adapter and home Wi-Fi
Steam Frame can stream over your existing home Wi-Fi, but Valve says that route is generally more congested and less reliable than the direct connection provided by the included adapter.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Connection method | Reliability and congestion | Setup complexity | Normal launch workflow | Host-system considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Included dedicated wireless adapter | Direct connection; generally more reliable and less congested than home Wi-Fi. | Requires a USB 3 port, SteamVR driver installation and code-based pairing. | Select the PC from the headset’s Steam dashboard, then choose Stream on a game. | Valve’s preferred setup path for PC streaming. |
| Home Wi-Fi | Uses the household network; can be more congested and less reliable. | Avoids the adapter pairing step but depends on the existing network. | Use the same headset library and Stream workflow after the PC is available. | Performance and compatibility can vary with the network and host OS. |
Use Wi-Fi as an alternative when the adapter cannot be positioned or connected, not as an assumption that both methods will behave identically. Congestion can show up as latency, interrupted streaming or an unavailable host. Testing the adapter first provides a useful baseline; if the direct link works and Wi-Fi does not, focus on the network path rather than reinstalling the game.
Windows and Linux host support
Steam Frame is designed to work with Windows and Linux PC titles, but Linux streaming has current limitations. Steam Support says streaming is not fully supported on Steam Machine and desktop Linux and may have performance or compatibility problems.
For shipped wireless-dongle use on Linux, Steam Support specifies SteamOS 3.9 or later, or a Linux kernel version 7.2 or later. Check the host’s actual SteamOS or kernel version before diagnosing pairing failures as a headset problem. A Windows host follows the standard desktop Steam, SteamVR and adapter-driver flow described above.
Linux users should also keep the desktop Steam client and SteamVR current, use the recommended beta branches when following Valve’s setup guidance, and expect that a game or driver can behave differently from the Windows path even when the headset is paired. Meeting the version requirement enables the documented dongle path; it does not guarantee identical game compatibility or performance for every title.

Troubleshoot pairing and streaming problems
The pairing prompt never appears
- Confirm that the desktop Steam client is on Steam Beta Update.
- Reboot the PC so SteamVR can install or load the wireless-adapter driver.
- Restart Steam Frame and launch SteamVR again.
- Verify that the headset and PC use the same Steam account.
- Install all available headset, desktop Steam and SteamVR updates before trying again.
Do not repeatedly enter a code while an update or driver installation is still pending. Finish the Steam restart, reopen SteamVR and begin the pairing flow again so the prompt is generated by the current software.
The adapter is connected but SteamVR does not detect it
- Move the adapter to a confirmed USB 3 port on the PC.
- Close and reopen SteamVR.
- Restart the PC so the driver-installation prompt can run again.
- Accept the driver prompt if it reappears, then use Pair and enter the code shown by the headset.
A USB connection alone does not complete setup; SteamVR’s driver and the headset’s code pairing are both required. If an extension cable is in use, test the included adapter directly in a USB 3 port first to rule out the cable or port arrangement.

The PC does not appear in the headset dashboard
- Check that Steam is running and signed in on the host PC.
- Confirm that SteamVR is open or can be launched by selecting the PC name from the headset’s Steam menu.
- Check that the adapter pairing completed with the current headset and account.
- Restart the headset, controllers and host SteamVR, as Steam Support recommends before deeper troubleshooting.
The code is rejected or pairing stops
Make sure the code is entered from the current headset prompt, not an earlier attempt. Confirm that the desktop client and headset are using the same Steam account, then restart both sides and repeat the driver and pairing sequence. Changing host computers or reinstalling SteamVR can require a fresh driver installation and pairing.
Streaming is unstable over Wi-Fi
Home Wi-Fi can be congested and less reliable than the dedicated adapter. If you are using Wi-Fi, first test with the included adapter on a USB 3 port. If the direct link is stable while Wi-Fi is not, the difference is the connection path rather than the game launch procedure.
Controllers are missing after the headset connects
Turn both controllers on and wait for automatic pairing. If either remains unavailable, use VR Settings > Controllers > Pair Controllers, hold the Steam and thin top View/Menu buttons until the beep, select Pair, and repeat for the other controller.
A game starts but does not behave like PC VR
Confirm that you selected the PC name in the headset dashboard and then used Stream on the library entry. Steam Frame’s standalone and PC-streaming modes are distinct. A PC game requires the desktop Steam client, SteamVR where applicable, and a host that can run that title; standalone support for Android APKs or native ARM64 software does not install the PC version on the headset.
