To get a Starlink connection working, use the Starlink app to find a location with a clear view of the sky, install and power the dish using the guide for your exact kit, wait for it to level and connect, then join the default STARLINK Wi-Fi network. After you are online, set a private Wi-Fi name and password in Settings → Router. Ethernet, mesh, and third-party-router setups depend on which Starlink router generation you own.

Before you install anything

Starlink hardware is not configured identically across generations. The detailed sequence below follows the Standard Actuated kit, while the Ethernet and third-party-router sections cover differences among Gen 2, Router 3, and Router Mini. Read the label on your dish and router and open the setup guide that matches that equipment before plugging in cables.

What you need

  • The Starlink dish, its matching router, the supplied cables and base or mount.
  • The Starlink app on a phone or tablet.
  • A proposed installation site that can be reached safely and has a broad, unobstructed sky view.
  • Any model-specific accessory required for your goal, such as an Ethernet adapter for a Gen 2 router.

Do not assume that a cable arrangement or accessory shown for one generation applies to another. If an elevated installation cannot be completed safely, stop and use a qualified installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan the network before choosing a permanent spot

The dish and the router do not have to serve the same physical purpose. The dish needs the best possible sky view, while the router needs to be close enough for the supplied cable arrangement and convenient for your devices. Decide whether your immediate goal is ordinary Wi-Fi, one wired TV or computer, more Ethernet ports, wider wireless coverage, or a replacement router. That goal determines whether you need a switch, mesh node, access point, Ethernet adapter, or no extra hardware at all.

Keep the exact dish and router models visible while planning. A mount that fits one dish may not fit another, and a port shown on a newer router may not exist on an older one. Starlink’s official shop lists mounts and accessories, but compatibility depends on the model and installation surface.

1. Check the sky view in the Starlink app

Satellite connectivity depends on the dish seeing the sky as satellites move overhead. Tree branches, poles, roofs, and other objects can block that view and produce interruptions. Starlink describes the requirement plainly: your dish needs a clear view of the sky so it can stay connected as satellites move overhead.

  1. Open the Starlink app.
  2. Choose Check for Obstructions.
  3. Stand at the proposed dish location and follow the app’s scan instructions.
  4. Test every location you are seriously considering, not just the place where the router will sit.
  5. Repeat the check at the final mounting height if you are comparing a ground location with a roof, pole, or wall position.

Install the dish as close to vertical as practical. If the ground-level view is blocked, consider a compatible roof, pole, or wall mount that raises the dish above the obstruction. Confirm that the mount fits your dish model and the surface you plan to use. Never choose a roof or pole location that you cannot access and secure safely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the app finds obstructions

Relocate the dish if possible. If relocation is not enough, clear the obstruction or raise the dish with a compatible mount. After moving it, unplug and reboot the system so it can reassess the new position. Persistent obstruction warnings mean the location still needs attention; they are not fixed by changing the Wi-Fi password or replacing a client device.

Do not treat a location as acceptable simply because the dish can see some sky. The app’s obstruction scan is the practical test for the specific spot, and a change in height or direction can alter the result. If the only clear position requires work you cannot perform safely, arrange professional installation rather than improvising a roof or pole attachment.

2. Install and power the dish

The Standard Actuated dish is designed to orient itself. You do not manually point it at a satellite.

LUCMO Starlink Gen 2 Ethernet Adapter for Actuated Gen 2 ONLY
  • ⚠️ COMPATIBILITY WARNING: Designed EXCLUSIVELY for Starlink Standard Actuated Gen 2. ❌NOT COMPATIBLE with Starlink Gen 3, Flat High-Performance, or any other models. Please verify your dish model before purchase!
  • PLUG & PLAY INSTALLATION: Simply connect the adapter between your Gen 2 Starlink router and the cable. No drivers or complex setup needed. Ensure a firm click on both ends for a stable connection.
  • ENABLE HARDWIRED SPEEDS & STABILITY: Unlock the full potential of your Starlink by connecting gaming consoles, PCs, and smart TVs directly via Ethernet for lower latency and smoother streaming.
  • RELIABLE DATA TRANSFER: Experience lag-free online gaming, 4K video conferencing, and ultra-fast file transfers with a stable, wired internet backbone.
  • TROUBLESHOOTING TIP: If not working, first check both connections are secure and restart your Starlink router.
  1. Place the dish in its supplied base or in a mount approved for that dish model.
  2. Connect the dish and router with the cables specified in your model’s guide.
  3. Connect the router to power.
  4. Leave the dish with a clear view while it starts. The Standard Actuated guide says it automatically levels itself, makes an initial connection after a few minutes, and then tilts to an optimum angle for its hemisphere.

Keep the hardware arrangement appropriate to the exact kit. Other Starlink generations may use different stands, connectors, or router layouts, so do not copy the Standard Actuated cable path by assumption. If your kit’s printed or in-app guide shows a different sequence, follow that model-specific instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What normal startup looks like

The dish first levels, establishes an initial connection, and adjusts its angle. Avoid pushing or manually tilting it during this process. If you have just relocated it, allow it to repeat the startup sequence after the reboot. A dish that is still orienting is not ready for a reliable test of every device in the home.

Keep the router powered while checking the app and Wi-Fi list. If the default network does not appear, recheck the model-specific cable connections and power source before changing other settings. Hardware generations can place connectors in different locations, so compare each connection with the guide rather than relying on a familiar-looking plug arrangement.

3. Connect a phone, computer, TV, or other device over Wi-Fi

Once the router is powered and the dish has begun connecting, use a nearby Wi-Fi device to join the default network.

  1. Open Wi-Fi settings on your phone, laptop, television, streaming player, or other client.
  2. Select STARLINK, the default network name shown in the Standard Actuated setup guide.
  3. Open the Starlink app after joining.
  4. Go to Settings → Router.
  5. Enter the Wi-Fi network name you want to use.
  6. Create a Wi-Fi password and save the change.
  7. Reconnect each device to the new network name and password.

The guide describes the password step as optional, but recommends securing the network. Until you create one, the default Wi-Fi network is not password protected. Choose a name and password that you can recognize without using personal information in the network name. A private password should be set before you use the connection for ordinary household devices.

If a device was connected before you changed the name

Changing the network name creates a new Wi-Fi profile from the device’s perspective. Select the new name, enter the new password, and remove the old saved profile if the device keeps trying to join STARLINK. Update phones, computers, televisions, streaming boxes, and smart-home equipment individually; each client stores its own saved network credentials.

  • High-Speed Stability -- Whether for work, entertainment, or smart home management, this adapter delivers fast, stable, and convenient networking performance. Upgrade your network setup today

If you are still at the initial setup stage, connect one phone first so you can complete the router settings in the app. Once the private name and password are saved, use that network for the remaining devices. This avoids leaving several devices on the temporary, unprotected default network.

Choose the right wired-network option

Ethernet capability is a router-generation question, not a universal Starlink feature. Identify the router before buying an adapter, switch, or replacement router.

Router generation Built-in Ethernet What you need for a wired device
Gen 2 No Ethernet ports Starlink Ethernet adapter
Router 3 Two LAN ports beneath the back cover Connect the device directly; add a network switch if you need more ports
Router Mini One latching LAN port Connect one wired device or add a suitable switch for additional ports

One wired TV or computer

With Router 3 or Router Mini, connect an Ethernet cable to the available LAN port and the device. With Gen 2, install the Starlink Ethernet adapter in the model-specific connection path, then connect the cable to the adapter. Do not order the adapter merely because you have Starlink; it is specifically needed when a Gen 2 router lacks the port required for your wired connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm which end of the cable belongs at the router or adapter and which belongs at the TV, computer, or other client. If a device is close enough for Wi-Fi and you do not need a wired link, no Ethernet accessory is required. The adapter is a physical solution for a missing Gen 2 port, not a general performance upgrade for every customer.

Several wired devices

If your router has a suitable LAN connection but not enough ports, a network switch can expand the number of wired connections. The switch does not replace the Starlink router; it provides additional ports downstream of it. Verify the port location and cable arrangement for your router generation first. Plan where the switch will sit so its cables can reach the TV, computer, or other wired equipment without creating an unsafe installation.

Add a mesh node or another access point

Use a mesh or additional access point when the dish and router work at the installation site but Wi-Fi coverage does not reach part of the home. Select equipment that matches your coverage goal and the ports available on your Starlink router.

Use a third-party router only when you need one

A replacement router is optional. It can be connected behind the Starlink router, with bypass mode enabled in the Starlink app, but Starlink does not guarantee compatibility or performance for third-party routers. Some Starlink app features may not work as expected in that arrangement.

Third-party-router procedure

  1. Identify the Starlink router generation. Gen 2 requires the Ethernet adapter for this path.
  2. Connect the third-party router behind the Starlink router using the appropriate Ethernet connection.
  3. Open the Starlink app and enable bypass mode as described for your hardware.
  4. Configure the new router’s Wi-Fi name, password, and local-network settings using its own instructions.
  5. Reconnect client devices to the new router’s network.

Bypass mode changes which device performs routing and Wi-Fi functions, so use it only when you have a clear reason, such as a specific network design or router feature. The Gen 3 setup guidance notes that exiting bypass mode requires a manual factory reset; plan for that recovery step before enabling it. A reset removes the router’s current configuration, so record any settings you will need to recreate.

If your only objective is to put phones and laptops online, the supplied Starlink router is the simpler path. Consider a third-party router when you have a defined coverage, wired-network, or network-management requirement and are willing to accept the compatibility and app-feature trade-offs.

When to stop and get installation help

If the only usable location is a roof, pole, or wall position that you cannot install safely, do not improvise. Use a professional installer. An uninterrupted sky view is useful only if the dish and mount are secure and the installation can be maintained safely.

Does the Standard Actuated dish need to be pointed manually?

No. The Standard Actuated guide says the dish automatically levels itself, makes an initial connection after a few minutes, and tilts to an optimum angle for its hemisphere. Let it complete that process without pushing or manually tilting it.

How do I connect to Starlink for the first time?

Join the default STARLINK network in your device’s Wi-Fi settings, open the Starlink app, go to Settings → Router, and create your own network name and password. The default network is not password protected until you set one.

Do I need an Ethernet adapter for Starlink?

Only some setups need one. Gen 2 has no built-in Ethernet ports and requires the Starlink Ethernet adapter for a wired device or the documented third-party-router path. Router 3 has two LAN ports, and Router Mini has one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a network switch?

Yes, when your Starlink router provides a suitable LAN connection. A switch adds downstream Ethernet ports for several wired devices; it does not replace the Starlink router. Check your router generation and port arrangement first.

Can I add a mesh system or third-party router?

Yes, but choose based on your coverage or network goal and the ports available on your Starlink router. A third-party router is connected behind the Starlink router with bypass mode enabled. Starlink does not guarantee compatibility or performance, and some app features may not work as expected.

How do I turn off bypass mode?

For the Gen 3 arrangement, Starlink’s setup guidance says leaving bypass mode requires a manual factory reset. Plan for the reset because it removes the router’s current configuration.

What should I do if Starlink reports obstructions?

Run Check for Obstructions again, then relocate the dish, clear the obstruction, or raise the dish with a compatible mount. After relocating it, unplug and reboot so it can reassess the new position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with the app’s obstruction check, install the dish safely using the guide for your exact kit, and let a Standard Actuated dish level and orient itself. Join STARLINK, secure the Wi-Fi in Settings → Router, then identify your router generation before adding Ethernet, a switch, mesh equipment, or a third-party router. Gen 2 needs an Ethernet adapter for wired and third-party-router paths; Router 3 and Router Mini provide built-in LAN ports. Use bypass mode only when its compatibility and factory-reset trade-offs are acceptable.
