For clearer voices and less overpowering bass, place the soundbar centered beneath the TV with its front unobstructed, connect it through the TV’s labeled HDMI ARC/eARC ports when available, select the external audio system in the TV menu, and tune dialogue, center, bass, and subwoofer levels in small steps while replaying familiar scenes. Use optical audio only when ARC/eARC is unavailable, because some HDMI control and audio-format features may be lost.
The exact menu names and sound controls vary by TV and soundbar. Treat the procedure below as a reliable order of operations, then confirm model-specific limits in both manuals.
What to do first: a five-minute setup checklist
- Center the bar below the screen. Aim it toward the main listening seat and keep the grille and drivers clear.
- Use HDMI ARC or eARC if both devices have compatible labeled ports. Connect the TV port marked ARC/eARC to the soundbar port marked TV OUT, ARC, or eARC.
- Enable the TV’s external-audio output, HDMI-CEC, and ARC/eARC options where the menus provide them.
- Start in Standard, Movie, or Neutral mode rather than immediately choosing a dramatic bass preset.
- Play familiar dialogue, music, and effects scenes. Raise the center or dialogue control slightly if voices recede; lower bass or the subwoofer level if it masks speech.
If the bar is silent, stop tuning and solve the connection first. Equalizer changes cannot correct a wrong input, disabled return-audio channel, or unsupported format.
Place the soundbar so speech reaches you clearly
Center it with the TV
Put the soundbar directly below the television and align its center with the center of the screen. Pointing it toward the main seating position helps the front drivers project voices at the listeners instead of across a wall. A bar mounted far to one side can make dialogue appear to come from the wrong location, especially when the picture places a speaker near the middle.

Leave the soundbar’s front grille, side drivers, and any display unobstructed. Do not hide it behind the TV, a decorative panel, or a cabinet door. Roku’s placement guidance explains that direct sound combines with reflections from nearby surfaces; those reflections can make higher frequencies, including speech detail, less crisp. Read the recommendations in Roku’s Streambar setup instructions.
Keep the bar flush with the furniture edge
If the bar sits on a media console, move it forward so its front edge is close to the furniture’s front edge. Avoid pushing it deep onto a shelf where the shelf above or behind it can reflect sound back toward the listener. Do not enclose the bar in a narrow cubby unless the manufacturer explicitly designed it for that installation.
Preserve space for upward-firing drivers
Some models use upward-firing speakers for height effects. Keep the area above such a bar open and do not place it under a low shelf that blocks the upward path. Follow the clearance diagram in the soundbar manual; a bar that supports height formats cannot create the intended effect if its ceiling path is obstructed.

Mounting considerations
A wall-mounted bar should remain horizontally centered with the screen and should not be tilted sharply toward the floor or ceiling unless the manual specifies an angle. Check the mount’s load rating, stud or anchor requirements, and the clearance needed for power and HDMI cables. A compatible mount is optional; correct alignment and an open front matter more than the mounting method.
Choose the right connection: HDMI ARC/eARC versus optical
| Connection | Use it when | What to check | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | The TV and soundbar each have labeled, compatible ARC or eARC ports. | Correct port labels, HDMI-CEC, ARC/eARC enabled, external-audio output selected, and a suitable high-speed cable. | Uses one HDMI port and may require setup in both devices. Supported formats depend on the TV, bar, cable, and source. |
| Optical audio | ARC/eARC is unavailable but both devices have optical input and output. | Optical output enabled on the TV, optical input selected on the bar, and cable tips fully seated. | Some HDMI-dependent control features, such as power interlock or TV-remote volume control, may not work. Format support is model-specific. |
HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) sends sound from TV apps and devices connected to the TV back to the soundbar over the HDMI cable. eARC is the enhanced version. Dolby’s connection guidance covers the ARC/eARC path and recommends an appropriate high-speed HDMI cable; see Dolby’s HDMI soundbar connection guide.

Before buying a cable, inspect the accessories that came with both products. Samsung Canada specifies High Speed HDMI with Ethernet or Premium High Speed HDMI for the setup described in its instructions. Cable requirements and supported formats can differ by model, so verify the exact manual at Samsung Canada’s HDMI ARC instructions.
Connect through HDMI ARC or eARC, step by step
- Power off both devices. This is not always mandatory, but it reduces handshake problems while you change cables.
- Find the TV’s return-audio port. It may be labeled “HDMI ARC,” “HDMI eARC,” or “HDMI (ARC/eARC).” Ordinary HDMI inputs may not send TV audio back to the bar.
- Find the soundbar’s return-audio port. Use the socket marked “TV OUT (ARC),” “HDMI OUT (eARC/ARC),” or an equivalent label. Do not use a port marked only HDMI IN for this connection.
- Connect the two labeled ports with HDMI. Push both ends fully into place. Use the cable type specified by the manuals; a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet or Premium High Speed HDMI cable is the type identified in Samsung’s described setup.
- Turn on HDMI-CEC. CEC is the control channel that lets compatible devices exchange power and volume commands. Manufacturers use different names for it, so search the TV and soundbar menus for HDMI control or CEC.
- Enable ARC or eARC in the TV menu. Some televisions leave ARC disabled until you turn it on. If the TV offers a separate eARC mode, choose it only when the soundbar and source chain support it.
- Select the external audio system. In the TV’s sound or audio-output menu, choose “Soundbar,” “Audio system,” “Receiver,” or the manufacturer’s equivalent instead of the built-in TV speakers.
- Select the matching input on the bar. Choose TV, HDMI ARC, or HDMI eARC using the remote or the bar’s input button.
- Play a TV app or broadcast and test volume. Confirm that sound comes from the bar and that the TV remote changes the bar’s volume. If the television still uses its own speakers, revisit the output and CEC settings.
Menu wording differs by region, software version, and model. Sony’s connection overview shows the equivalent HDMI and optical choices and the TV-output selection process at Sony’s soundbar connection support page.

- Check for matching optical ports. The TV must have an optical or digital-audio output, and the soundbar must have an optical or digital-audio input.
- Remove protective caps if the cable has them. Optical connectors often have small caps that must be removed before insertion.
- Connect TV optical out to soundbar optical in. Do not connect the cable to an optical output on the soundbar.
- Select Optical on the soundbar. Use the input button or the bar’s setup menu.
- Enable optical or digital audio output on the TV. Select the external speaker or optical output option rather than the internal speakers.
- Test speech and volume. If the TV remote does not control volume, use the soundbar remote or program the remote according to the product manual.
Optical is a practical fallback, not a universal substitute for every HDMI feature. Sony notes that an optical-only connection can lose HDMI-dependent functions such as power interlock and TV-remote volume control. Audio-format limits also depend on the specific products: Amazon’s Fire TV Soundbar Plus documentation states that its optical connection does not support Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. Do not generalize that one product’s limitation to every soundbar; check your own manual. The model-specific instructions are at Amazon Devices Help.
Set the TV’s audio output and format deliberately
Choose the external speaker path
After the cable is connected, open the TV’s Sound, Audio, or Speakers menu and select the external audio system. A setting called “TV speakers,” “Internal speakers,” or “Use TV speakers” can override a working HDMI or optical cable. Turn it off or choose the soundbar option.
Match the digital-audio format to the equipment
Many TVs offer Auto, PCM, Pass-Through, Bitstream, or similar choices. The correct choice depends on what the TV, soundbar, and source can decode. If Auto or Pass-Through produces silence, pops, or missing channels, temporarily test PCM to establish a basic stereo path, then consult both manuals before changing back. This is a diagnostic step, not a universal recommendation; exact format behavior is model-specific.

Check the source device
If only one streaming box, game console, disc player, or app sounds wrong, inspect that source’s audio-track and output settings. A source can be configured for a format the TV or bar cannot pass. Compare another app or a broadcast before changing several settings at once so you know which change fixed the problem.
Tune dialogue and bass by listening in small steps
Begin with a neutral baseline
Choose Standard, Neutral, or the least processed mode available. If the soundbar has an automatic room-calibration routine, run it from the usual listening seat exactly as the manual describes, then verify the result with familiar content. Avoid judging a preset from its name alone: “Movie,” “Cinema,” or “Voice” can alter several frequency bands at once.
Use two contrasting test scenes
- Play a scene with ordinary conversation and little background music. Sit in the main listening position and note whether every word is distinct without raising the volume excessively.
- Play a familiar music track or action scene with strong effects. Check whether the voice remains easy to follow when bass and transients are present.
- Return to the dialogue scene after each adjustment. Change one control at a time and use small increments.
Raise the center or dialogue control modestly
Surround soundbars may expose a “Center,” “Center level,” “Voice,” “Dialogue,” or “Speech enhancement” control. Increase it one step, replay both scenes, and stop when speech is clear without sounding thin or detached. Some bars do not provide an independent center channel; in that case, use the available dialogue mode or a mild midrange adjustment only if the manual describes it.
Reduce bass that masks speech
If voices disappear whenever music or effects begin, lower the Bass or Subwoofer level slightly before raising overall volume. Excessive low-frequency energy can make speech seem muddy even when the center channel is loud enough. Recheck music after each reduction so the result does not become unnaturally weak.
Evaluate dialogue modes instead of trusting the label
A dialogue mode can improve intelligibility for one program and sound harsh on another because it changes tonal balance. Compare it with the default mode using your own shows, broadcasts, and music. Keep the setting that works across the content you actually watch rather than the one that sounds most dramatic in a short sample.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Keep surround and height effects proportionate
If rear, side, or height channels dominate, reduce their levels before making the front bar louder. Dialogue should remain anchored to the screen. Exact channel names and ranges vary, so use the smallest change that restores a stable front image.
Place and adjust a separate subwoofer
Start with a practical location
Put the subwoofer on the floor with clearance around its driver and port. Avoid trapping it tightly in a cabinet. Room shape, walls, and furniture can make one corner boomy and another weak, so there is no universal best location.
Try a subwoofer crawl
Bose describes a useful experiment: temporarily place the subwoofer at the main listening position, play familiar bass-heavy material, and walk around the room’s perimeter. Listen for a spot where bass sounds full and tight rather than one-note or boomy, then place the subwoofer there and return to the listening seat. This method is a starting point, not a guarantee for every room or model. See Bose’s home-theater setup guidance.
Blend rather than maximize
Set the subwoofer level low enough that it supports music and effects without calling attention to its location. Recheck dialogue after positioning it; moving a subwoofer can change the bass reaching the seat even when its level setting has not changed.

No sound at all
- Confirm the soundbar and TV are powered on and not muted.
- Verify the soundbar input matches the connected socket: TV/ARC for HDMI or Optical for an optical cable.
- Check that the HDMI cable is in the two labeled ARC/eARC ports, not ordinary HDMI inputs.
- In the TV menu, select the external audio system and enable ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC where required.
- For optical, confirm optical output is enabled and that both cable ends are fully inserted.
- Test another TV app or source to determine whether the problem is limited to one input.
Roku, Samsung, and Sony all emphasize checking port labels and TV output settings in their connection instructions. If the devices still do not handshake, follow the product-specific restart procedure. Samsung’s troubleshooting sequence includes powering down, disconnecting the devices and link cable, then reconnecting; use the exact order in your model’s manual.

Sound works but the TV remote does not change volume
HDMI-CEC must usually be enabled for integrated power and volume control. Recheck that setting on both devices and confirm the bar is connected through ARC/eARC. Optical connections may not support these HDMI-dependent controls, so use the soundbar remote or a separately programmed universal remote when necessary.
Dialogue is still muddy
- Remove objects in front of the bar and move it forward so it is not recessed on a reflective shelf.
- Confirm the bar is centered and aimed toward the listening seat.
- Lower bass or subwoofer level slightly.
- Raise the center or dialogue control one step if the model provides it.
- Compare a second program. If only one source sounds wrong, inspect that source’s audio track and the TV’s output format rather than continually changing the bar’s equalizer.
Audio cuts out or sounds distorted
Reseat the cable, try the cable type specified by the manufacturer, and verify that the selected format is supported by every device in the chain. With HDMI, test ARC and eARC settings separately if the TV offers both. With optical, test PCM as a temporary diagnostic and then consult the manuals for surround-format support. Do not assume that a cable or format works simply because the connector fits.
Only surround or height effects are missing
Check whether the source is providing a compatible multichannel track and whether the TV is passing it through. Confirm that the soundbar is not in a two-channel or night mode that downmixes effects. The available formats depend on the exact TV, bar, connection, and source; use the model manuals for the definitive list.
A repeatable final calibration routine
- Reset your reference. Select the neutral sound mode and sit in the usual seat.
- Check physical alignment. Center the bar, clear the grille, and verify that furniture is not blocking or enclosing it.
- Confirm the signal path. Identify the active input and verify TV output, ARC/eARC or optical settings, and CEC where applicable.
- Play quiet dialogue. Adjust center or dialogue level only if words are not distinct.
- Play bass-heavy material. Lower bass or subwoofer level if it masks voices or sounds one-note.
- Replay the dialogue scene. Keep the smallest changes that improve both scenes.
- Test the TV remote and another source. This catches control and format problems before you assume the tuning is complete.
Write down the final settings or photograph the soundbar’s display if you may need to restore them after a firmware update or reset. If a particular program remains difficult to understand while other content is clear, the mix itself or that source’s track may be the limiting factor; no universal soundbar preset can correct every recording.
When to rely on the manual
- Port names: Confirm which HDMI socket supports ARC/eARC and which soundbar socket is the TV return port.
- Cable requirements: Check whether the manufacturer specifies High Speed HDMI with Ethernet, Premium High Speed HDMI, or another class.
- Format support: Verify Dolby, DTS, PCM, Atmos, and other formats for the exact connection and product combination.
- Menu labels: TV brands and regions use different names for external speakers, CEC, ARC, and digital output.
- Calibration: Follow the model’s microphone placement, room-measurement, and reset instructions if automatic setup is included.
- Mounting and ventilation: Use the stated clearances and hardware rather than relying on a generic bracket or shelf.
Once the bar is centered, the signal path is correct, and bass is controlled, dialogue clarity usually comes from modest, repeatable adjustments rather than from maximum volume or an extreme effect preset.
