For the standard Sony setup, run one HDMI cable from the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT (TV eARC/ARC) port. Turn on HDMI control and ARC/eARC in the TV, then set the soundbar’s Control for HDMI to On, TV Audio Input Mode to Auto, and the bar to its TV input. Dolby Atmos will work only when the TV, source device, content, settings, and audio-return route all support the intended format.
The Sony HT-A5000 is the clearest documented example: Sony identifies it as a 5.1.2-channel Dolby Atmos/DTS:X soundbar. Its menus and supported formats are used below, but another Sony soundbar or TV may use different labels and capabilities. Check the manuals for your exact models through Sony’s support page.
What you need before starting
Gather the soundbar, its power cord, the supplied HDMI cable, the TV remote, and the source device you want to use (such as a streaming box, Blu-ray player, set-top box, or game console). The HT-A5000 guide specifies the supplied HDMI cable for the TV connection and says the plugs must be firmly inserted. A separately connected source may need its own HDMI cable.

- A TV with an HDMI input labeled ARC or eARC is the normal requirement for sending TV audio to the bar.
- The HT-A5000 has an HDMI OUT (TV eARC/ARC) port for the TV and an HDMI IN port for a directly connected source.
- Atmos playback also requires a program that contains Dolby Atmos and a source device and TV configured to pass that format.
- Optional rear speakers are not required for the basic connection. Sony lists SA-RS3S and SA-RS5 as compatible expansion speakers for 360 Spatial Sound Mapping when the bar has the required software update.
Because Sony’s TV menus differ by model, the exact television menu path cannot be stated universally. Sony’s Dolby Atmos guidance also advises following the TV and source manuals for their audio-output and passthrough settings: Sony Dolby Atmos playback guidance.

1. Find the correct HDMI ports
Look at the back or side of the TV for an HDMI socket marked ARC or eARC. Only that labeled input can return TV audio to the soundbar through the HDMI connection. A regular HDMI input may display video from a source but will not necessarily send the TV’s own audio back to the bar.
On the HT-A5000, use the socket labeled HDMI OUT (TV eARC/ARC). Do not use the bar’s HDMI IN for the TV-to-soundbar link; HDMI IN is for a source device such as a console or Blu-ray player.
2. Connect the TV to the soundbar
- Turn off the TV and soundbar while making the connection.
- Plug one end of the supplied HDMI cable into the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC.
- Plug the other end into the HT-A5000’s HDMI OUT (TV eARC/ARC) port.
- Push both connectors fully home. A loose plug can produce a black screen, intermittent sound, or no audio-return connection.
- Reconnect power and turn on the TV and soundbar.

Open the TV’s settings and enable its HDMI-CEC function, which Sony may label Control for HDMI, along with the TV’s ARC or eARC function. The wording and location vary by television model, so use that TV’s manual rather than assuming Sony’s menu names appear unchanged.
Both functions matter. ARC/eARC defines the audio-return channel, while HDMI control lets the TV and soundbar discover and control one another. Sony states:

“If the Control for HDMI function on the TV is not enabled, TV sound will not be output from the speaker system.”
After enabling the settings, save them and leave the TV’s audio output directed to the HDMI-ARC/eARC device or external audio system if the TV offers that choice.
4. Set the HT-A5000’s HDMI options
- Using the soundbar remote, open Setup.
- Choose Advanced Settings.
- Open HDMI Settings.
- Set Control for HDMI to On.
- Set TV Audio Input Mode to Auto.
- Press the soundbar’s input control until TV is selected.
If the TV does not support eARC, Sony says to set the bar’s eARC setting to Off. If the TV does support eARC, leave eARC enabled on both devices and verify that the TV’s own eARC option is switched on.
These labels are specific to the HT-A5000 guide. A different Sony model can place equivalent controls elsewhere or omit a setting entirely.
5. Connect a Blu-ray player, console, or set-top box
There are two valid wiring routes. Choose based on the TV’s passthrough capability, the source’s video format, and the audio format you need.

For the soundbar-input route, connect the source to HDMI IN, select HDMI on the bar, and connect the bar’s HDMI OUT to the TV. For the eARC-TV route, select the TV input that carries the source and leave the bar on TV. Sony’s source-device procedure is in the HT-A5000 source connection guide.
6. Match HDMI signal format to the source
The HT-A5000 includes an HDMI Signal Format choice. Select the format that matches the source’s video output and the capabilities of the TV and HDMI connection. The correct choice depends on the source’s video mode; selecting a mode the TV or cable path cannot handle can cause a blank picture even when the audio wiring is correct.
When a source is connected directly to the soundbar, verify that the TV can display the video signal passed through the bar. When a source is connected to the TV, verify that the TV’s eARC input also accepts that source’s video format. Consult the manuals for the exact TV, source, and soundbar models before selecting a high-bandwidth video mode.
7. Play a known Dolby Atmos program and verify the signal
Start with content explicitly labeled Dolby Atmos in the app, disc, or service you are using. Ordinary stereo or surround content cannot make the system display an Atmos signal simply because the bar is Atmos-capable.
- Confirm the source device’s audio output is set to pass through or bitstream Atmos where that option exists.
- Confirm the TV is not converting the source to stereo or another output format.
- For an eARC route, verify eARC is enabled on the TV and soundbar.
- For a direct source route, select the soundbar’s HDMI input.
- For TV apps or devices connected to the TV, select the soundbar’s TV input.
- Raise the volume, make sure mute is off, and allow the program to begin before judging the result.
Sony’s HT-A5000 supported-audio-format table distinguishes HDMI input, TV eARC, TV ARC, and optical. It lists Dolby Atmos for HDMI input and TV eARC, but not for TV ARC or optical.

What eARC changes—and what it does not
eARC is not a guarantee that every HDMI connection carries every Atmos format. The source device must output a supported format, the program must contain Atmos, the TV must pass it through, and the soundbar must receive it on a route that supports it. With the HT-A5000, Sony specifically lists Atmos over the bar’s HDMI input and over TV eARC; the same table does not list Atmos over TV ARC or optical.
ARC can still be useful for ordinary TV sound and compatible surround formats, but do not choose it when your goal is an Atmos format that the HT-A5000 accepts only through HDMI input or eARC. The exact result depends on the TV model, the source, and their settings.

Once the bar and any optional speakers are in their final positions, run the model’s guided Sound Field Optimization routine. Sony says this process calibrates the system to the listening environment. It is an optional finishing step for the basic TV connection, not a prerequisite for getting the TV audio link working.
The HT-A5000 is already identified by Sony as a 5.1.2-channel soundbar. If you add SA-RS3S or SA-RS5 rear speakers, Sony lists them as compatible with 360 Spatial Sound Mapping when the soundbar has the required software update. Pair and configure those speakers according to their instructions, then repeat the guided optimization.

Troubleshoot “no TV sound” in the right order
The TV shows the soundbar but there is silence
- Check that the HDMI cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC-labeled socket, not an ordinary HDMI input.
- Confirm the other end is in the soundbar’s HDMI OUT (TV eARC/ARC) port.
- Turn on Control for HDMI on both the TV and soundbar.
- Enable ARC or eARC in the TV’s settings.
- On the HT-A5000, verify TV Audio Input Mode is Auto.
- Select the soundbar’s TV input, raise the volume, and cancel mute.
The connection worked previously but stopped
Reseat both HDMI plugs, then power-cycle the TV and soundbar. Turn both devices off, disconnect power briefly, reconnect them, and turn the TV on before testing again. A partially inserted connector or a failed HDMI-control handshake can interrupt audio even when the cable appears connected.
A source connected to the TV is silent through the bar
First confirm the TV is returning audio over ARC/eARC and that the source is configured for a supported output. If the problem persists, connect that source directly to the soundbar’s HDMI IN, select the bar’s HDMI input, and test again. Sony recommends this route as a troubleshooting step for a source device plugged into the TV.
There is picture but no sound after changing video settings
Return the source and soundbar to a mutually supported HDMI Signal Format. A video mode that the TV cannot accept can interrupt the entire HDMI link. Recheck the source’s output mode and the TV input used for the connection.

Atmos is not displayed
- Confirm the title or disc actually carries Dolby Atmos.
- Check whether the source is connected through HDMI IN or TV eARC, the two Atmos routes Sony lists for the HT-A5000.
- If the signal is returning through TV ARC or optical, use HDMI IN or eARC instead; Sony’s table does not list Atmos on those fallback paths.
- Enable eARC where available and ensure the source and TV are passing the format rather than converting it.
- Test with a second known Atmos title to separate a content limitation from a wiring problem.

Model-specific limits to keep in mind
The procedure above is deliberately based on Sony’s HT-A5000 documentation because the title does not identify a particular soundbar or TV. Sony sells multiple soundbar and television models, and their port names, menu paths, supported formats, and firmware behavior can differ. Use the exact manuals for your equipment whenever a setting is missing or named differently.
