How to Set Up a Software KVM to Control Multiple Computers

A software KVM lets one keyboard and mouse operate several computers over your local network. Install the same application on every computer, designate one machine as the server or primary host, connect the other machines as clients, and arrange the on-screen layout to match their physical positions. The pointer then crosses from one desktop to another at a screen edge (or through a shortcut), while typing follows the computer that currently has focus.

This is input sharing, not automatic video switching. If several computers feed one monitor, you still change the monitor’s input yourself unless you add separate display-switching hardware.

What a software KVM does—and what it does not

A traditional KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switches USB input and a display signal between computers. A software KVM leaves each computer’s operating system running and sends keyboard and mouse events across the local network. Most products can also synchronize clipboard text; some provide limited file transfer.

The computers must be able to reach one another on the same wired or Wi-Fi network. The software’s server listens for client connections, and firewall rules, VPNs, guest-network isolation, or changing IP addresses can prevent pairing. Because the applications transmit input between machines, use a trusted network and enable encryption or fingerprint verification when the product offers it.

Software KVM is useful when each computer has its own display, or when you want to keep several desktops visible while using one keyboard and mouse. It is less convenient when you need one monitor to change video sources automatically; that remains a separate display-switching problem.

Choose the right software path

Your operating-system mix and transfer requirements determine the best starting point.

Microsoft’s setup and troubleshooting details are documented at Mouse Without Borders. Input Leap’s platform notes and workflow are in its project README. Synergy’s current prerequisites are listed in its installation guide.

Prepare every computer before pairing

• Install the same product on every participating computer. A server alone is not enough; each client needs its own running application.
• Put all machines on a reachable network. Wired Ethernet is usually the most predictable. On Wi-Fi, avoid guest networks that isolate devices from one another.
• Record computer names and addresses. A hostname is easier to maintain when a router changes DHCP addresses, while an IP address can help diagnose name-resolution failures.
• Have administrator permission available. Synergy lists administrator rights as a prerequisite, and some Windows features need elevation to control the lock screen or elevated applications.
• Plan the physical layout. Note which display is left, right, above, or below the primary screen. You will reproduce those relationships in the software’s layout grid.
• Decide whether a VPN or endpoint firewall is active. These can block the listening port even when ordinary web access works.

Set up Mouse Without Borders on Windows

Mouse Without Borders is the shortest path when every computer runs Windows. The current Microsoft documentation says it controls up to four computers.

1. Install and open PowerToys

1. Install Microsoft PowerToys on every Windows computer you want to control.
2. Open PowerToys Settings, select Mouse Without Borders in the sidebar, and turn the feature on.
3. Keep the settings window available on both machines while pairing.

2. Generate the host key

1. On the computer whose keyboard and mouse you will share, select New Key. The app displays a security key and the computer’s host name.
2. Leave that computer running and reachable on the same network as the others.

3. Connect each additional PC

1. On the second computer, enter the security key generated on the first computer.
2. Enter the first computer’s computer name exactly as shown.
3. Select Connect. Repeat the process for each remaining PC, up to the documented four-computer limit.

4. Arrange and test the screens

1. In Mouse Without Borders, drag the device icons so their relative order matches the desk—for example, place the laptop icon to the left of the desktop icon if the laptop is physically left.
2. Move the pointer beyond the appropriate screen edge. It should appear on the neighboring computer.
3. Type in a text editor on the destination computer to confirm that keyboard focus follows the pointer.

Clipboard and file transfer

Mouse Without Borders shares clipboard content and supports copy/paste or drag-and-drop for a single file. Microsoft documents a 100 MB file-transfer limit; folders and multiple files are not supported by those operations. Use a normal network share or cloud storage for larger batches.

Elevated apps and the lock screen

The application can run as a service under the Windows System account so it can control elevated applications or the lock screen. Microsoft warns that this mode adds security risk. Enable it only when the extra control is necessary, and treat the host as a privileged endpoint.

If the keyboard stops following the pointer

Microsoft notes that a focused full-screen Remote Desktop session, virtual machine, or simulator window can prevent keyboard focus from following the mouse. Turn on Hide mouse at screen edge, change the active window, or exit the full-screen session before testing again.

Set up Input Leap across Windows, macOS, and Linux

Input Leap is designed for mixed desktop operating systems. Its project documentation says it must be installed on every participating machine and describes a server that shares its keyboard and mouse with clients.

1. Install and launch Input Leap everywhere

1. Install the current Input Leap release on the computer with the physical keyboard and mouse and on every client.
2. Open the application on each machine and note the exact screen name displayed by each client, including capitalization.

2. Make the keyboard computer the server

1. On the primary computer, select the Server role.
2. Open Configure server. The configuration window presents a screen-grid layout.

3. Add every client to the screen grid

1. Add one screen tile for each client.
2. Place each tile where its monitor sits relative to the server: left, right, above, or below.
3. Open each tile’s properties and enter the client’s screen name exactly as shown in that client’s Input Leap window. Names are case-sensitive.
4. Save the layout, then start the server.

4. Point clients at the server

1. On each client, enter the server computer’s IP address when prompted.
2. If the application offers Bonjour or automatic discovery and your network supports it, you can use that instead.
3. Start the client and wait for the connection status to indicate that it is linked to the server.

5. Verify edge movement and shortcuts

Move the pointer across a configured edge or use the application’s keypress switch. If the pointer reaches a physical edge but does not cross, the most common cause is a mismatch between the grid and the desk or a client name that does not match exactly.

Platform and Wayland qualification

The README lists Windows 10 and 11, macOS 10.12 and newer, Linux, FreeBSD, and OpenBSD as platforms known to work. It also states that clipboard sharing is not currently supported on Linux/Wayland. Wayland input behavior depends on the desktop and compositor, so test pointer movement, keyboard focus, and clipboard operations on the exact distribution and session you use. The project describes Input Leap as a fork maintained by active Barrier maintainers and considers Barrier unmaintained; check the project’s current release information before standardizing a fleet.

Set up Synergy when you need its paid workflow

Synergy is an optional paid alternative for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its installation guide requires an active license, at least two computers with a monitor each, Ethernet or Wi-Fi on the same network, and administrator permissions. The guide recommends Synergy 3; Synergy 2 is end-of-life.

Synergy 3

1. Install the same Synergy 3 version on every computer. Do not mix major versions.
2. Choose the computer supplying the keyboard and mouse as the server or primary machine.
3. Add each other computer as a client and follow the in-app connection prompts.
4. Approve any security prompt only after confirming that the displayed computer is the one you intended to connect.
5. Arrange the screens in the server layout so adjacent edges touch in the same order as the physical displays.

Synergy 1

1. Install Synergy 1 consistently on every computer in that setup; Synergy 1 and Synergy 3 cannot connect to one another.
2. Designate the keyboard-and-mouse computer as the server and start it.
3. On each client, enter the server’s computer name or IP address. The documentation prefers the computer name because a router can assign a new IP address.
4. If TLS fingerprints appear, compare the fingerprint shown on both machines before trusting the connection.
5. Open the server layout and position each client so its screen edge touches the correct neighboring edge.

Synergy shares clipboard text and images but not files. It supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, not Android, iOS/iPadOS, or ChromeOS. Consult the vendor’s Synergy 1 configuration guide for the legacy interface and its FAQ for platform and clipboard details.

Match the software layout to the desk

The layout is not cosmetic: it defines where the pointer is allowed to leave one desktop. Treat each tile as a monitor and ensure that neighboring edges actually touch in the configuration.

• A monitor directly to the right of the server belongs on the server’s right edge.
• A laptop positioned below a large display belongs beneath the display, not merely somewhere in the same row.
• For a vertical arrangement, align the overlapping portion of the edges; a pointer leaving outside the configured overlap will remain on the current screen.
• Use the same orientation and scaling assumptions that the operating system reports. A display rotated portrait-style still needs to occupy the correct side in the software grid.

If a product offers a screen-lock or “stop at edge” option, disable it while testing so an accidental boundary setting does not look like a network failure. Synergy’s troubleshooting guidance specifically says adjacent screen edges must touch, and Input Leap requires exact client names in the grid.

Understand clipboard, file, and video behavior

When one monitor is connected to several computers, change the monitor’s physical input selector yourself. A software KVM does not carry HDMI, DisplayPort, or other video signals, so pointer sharing and video selection are separate tasks.

Troubleshoot a connection that fails or degrades

No computers appear, or a client cannot connect

1. Confirm that every computer is on the same reachable network. Test by pinging the server’s hostname or IP address from a client if your operating system provides a ping utility.
2. Re-enter the Mouse Without Borders security key and host name, or verify the Input Leap/Synergy server address and client name.
3. Allow the application through each computer’s firewall for private or trusted networks. A firewall can block the listening service even when the computers can browse the web.
4. Temporarily disconnect a VPN or inspect endpoint-security logs for a blocked local-network connection. Re-enable protection after identifying the needed rule.
5. Restart the server and client applications after changing firewall or network settings.

Microsoft’s checklist covers same-network status, the security key and host name, and firewall permission at its troubleshooting documentation. Synergy’s basic troubleshooting guide also calls out VPN and firewall interference: Basic troubleshooting steps.

The pointer will not cross an edge

• Compare the software grid with the real desk and make sure the touching edges overlap.
• For Input Leap, check every screen name character and capitalization.
• Check whether Scroll Lock is engaged; Synergy’s troubleshooting notes that it can affect switching.
• Move the pointer through the configured portion of the edge rather than a corner that lies outside the overlap.

It worked, then stopped

• Refresh or restart the affected server and client.
• Check whether the computer changed networks, resumed from sleep, or received a new IP address.
• Inspect VPN and firewall state after an operating-system or security-software update.
• Reconnect the client using the server’s current name or address.

Linux behaves differently under Wayland

Input Leap explicitly lacks clipboard sharing on Linux/Wayland. Synergy’s troubleshooting documentation says Wayland support depends on the desktop. If pointer or keyboard behavior differs from an X11 session, test the same application under the compositor your distribution supports and consult the project’s current compatibility notes.

A full-screen remote or virtual session captures input

On Windows, a focused full-screen Remote Desktop, virtual machine, or simulator can keep Mouse Without Borders from forwarding the keyboard as the pointer moves. Exit full-screen, change window focus, or enable Hide mouse at screen edge as a workaround.

Security and reliability practices

• Use a private, trusted LAN rather than an untrusted public hotspot.
• Keep the software and operating systems patched, especially when the KVM service runs continuously.
• Verify host names, keys, or TLS fingerprints before accepting a client. A mistyped name can connect you to the wrong machine on a shared network.
• Restrict firewall rules to private networks and the required application rather than opening broad inbound access.
• Do not enable a System-account service on Windows unless you need elevated or lock-screen control; Microsoft documents additional risk for that mode.
• Use a stable computer name for Synergy when possible, and reserve a DHCP address or use a local DNS name if your network changes addresses frequently.
• Stop the server when you are finished on a temporary or shared network.

Which setup fits common desk layouts?

Several Windows PCs and no mixed-platform requirement

Start with Mouse Without Borders. Its key-and-host-name pairing is quick, it supports up to four computers, and it includes clipboard and limited single-file transfer. Keep the 100 MB limit and the full-screen remote-session behavior in mind.

A Windows workstation plus Mac and Linux machines

Input Leap provides the cross-platform server/client model. Spend time naming each screen exactly and building the grid before diagnosing pointer movement. If a Linux machine uses Wayland, plan for no clipboard sharing and test compositor-specific input behavior.

You need a supported paid product and clipboard images

Synergy is the relevant option among these choices. Purchase and activate one license, install one major version consistently, and use its layout and fingerprint prompts. It still shares input rather than monitor video and cannot transfer files.

You need one monitor to change computers automatically

None of these software KVM applications switches the monitor’s input. Keep the software KVM for keyboard and mouse sharing only, and evaluate a separate display-switching solution for the video path.
